To run a Windows 11 game with elevated permissions once, find its actual .exe file, right-click it, choose Run as administrator, and approve the User Account Control prompt. To make elevation permanent, open the executable’s Properties, select Compatibility, enable Run this program as an administrator, and apply the change.
Administrator mode may help when a trusted game, launcher, mod manager, or updater cannot access protected files. It does not increase FPS or automatically fix corrupted files, drivers, anti-cheat, network, or compatibility problems.
What “Run as administrator” does
Windows normally starts applications with a standard user permission token. User Account Control (UAC) asks you to approve an elevated administrator token when an application needs broader access to protected files, folders, registry locations, or system resources.
The prompt is normal, but it is not a safety guarantee. Before selecting Yes, verify that the executable belongs to the game publisher or a reputable platform. A standard Windows account may need an administrator’s username and password instead of simply approving the prompt.

Elevation changes permissions, not game performance. It does not make a game run faster, improve graphics quality, increase frame rate, or bypass every error. Microsoft generally recommends that modern games avoid requiring administrator rights because elevation can create security, compatibility, and per-user-data problems.
Before running the game as administrator
Use administrator mode as a targeted troubleshooting test rather than the first solution for every launch failure. Before changing permissions:
- Update the game and its launcher.
- Check the publisher’s support instructions for that specific error.
- Verify or repair the game files through Steam, Epic Games Store, Xbox, or the relevant launcher.
- Install pending Windows updates and graphics-driver updates.
- If the game is old, run Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Program Compatibility Troubleshooter. Microsoft’s compatibility guidance explains why older software can fail after Windows changes.
- Identify the process that is actually failing: the game, launcher, updater, anti-cheat bootstrapper, or mod tool.
Run a game as administrator once
This is the safest way to test whether permissions are causing the problem because the setting ends when the game closes.
- Close the game and, if necessary, its launcher.
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the folder where the game is installed.
- Find the relevant
.exefile. It may be the game executable, a game-specific launcher, or an anti-cheat bootstrapper. - Right-click the file and select Run as administrator. If the compact Windows 11 menu does not show it, select Show more options.
- Select Yes in the UAC prompt, or enter authorized administrator credentials if Windows requests them.
The elevated permission applies to that running instance only. Closing the game ends that elevation; it does not permanently alter the executable.

How to find the correct executable
Do not elevate every file in the installation folder. Use the executable named in the publisher’s official support instructions whenever possible. A desktop shortcut may point to a launcher rather than the game itself, and a launcher may start a separate game process. If the problem occurs after the launcher hands control to the game, test the game executable separately.
Run a game as administrator from Start
- Open Start and search for the game.
- Right-click the result.
- Select Run as administrator. Depending on the Windows 11 build and the type of app, you may need to select More first.
If the option is unavailable, choose Open file location, locate the shortcut or its target, and use the executable’s context menu. Start-menu behavior differs between traditional desktop programs, shortcuts, Microsoft Store apps, and launcher entries.
Always run a game as administrator
Only use permanent elevation if the game consistently works after the one-time test or the publisher specifically requires it.
- Locate the actual game
.exe. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Under Settings, enable Run this program as an administrator.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch the game normally. Windows should request elevation each time it starts.
Administrator mode and compatibility mode are separate settings. The administrator option changes privileges; compatibility settings alter how older software behaves. Do not enable unrelated compatibility options unless the game’s support instructions call for them.

How to stop permanent elevation
- Right-click the same executable and select Properties.
- Open Compatibility.
- Clear Run this program as an administrator.
- Select Apply and OK.
If the prompt continues, check whether elevation was also enabled for the launcher, a shortcut’s Advanced settings, or a compatibility layer created by another tool.
Should you run the launcher or the game as administrator?
They are not interchangeable in every setup:
- Launcher problem: If Steam, Epic, or another launcher cannot install, update, or modify protected files, the launcher may be the relevant target.
- Game problem: If the launcher works but the game fails after handoff, test the game executable itself.
- Child processes: Some launchers start separate processes with different privilege levels, so elevating one component may not elevate the component that is failing.
Elevating an entire launcher gives it broader access than elevating only the game. Do not make Steam or another launcher permanently elevated by default. Use it when the game’s official support instructions specifically recommend that procedure. For example, Epic’s Steam troubleshooting guidance describes an administrator launch for a particular Rocket League issue; it is not a universal Windows requirement.
If “Run as administrator” is missing
Check these possibilities:
- You right-clicked a web shortcut, Store entry, shortcut, or non-executable file.
- The game is managed by a launcher and its executable is in a separate library folder.
- You need to select Show more options in the Windows 11 context menu.
- Your account does not have administrator rights.
- The game came from Microsoft Store or Xbox and uses a packaged app model rather than a conventional, user-accessible executable.
- A work, school, family-safety, or group-policy restriction blocks elevation.
Microsoft Store and Xbox games do not all expose the traditional executable-and-Properties workflow. Use the platform’s update, repair, or reset tools and follow the publisher’s instructions instead. Microsoft’s app-permissions guidance also distinguishes Store app permissions from ordinary desktop application behavior.
If the UAC prompt has no Yes button
A missing Yes button commonly means that you are signed in with a standard account and no administrator credentials are available, or that UAC policy prevents the elevation. The computer may also be managed by an employer or school.

Use an authorized administrator account or contact the device administrator. Do not disable UAC, use a “UAC bypass” utility, or make unverified registry changes. When administrator mode can help
Elevation may help when:
- An older game tries to write settings or files inside a protected installation folder such as
C:Program Files. - A launcher or updater cannot modify files it owns.
- A mod manager or configuration tool needs access to a protected location.
- The publisher’s support procedure explicitly requires elevation.
A game installed under Program Files may be encountering an old design assumption rather than a genuine need for permanent administrator rights. A game installed in a user library may not need elevation at all. Permanent elevation can also affect per-user save and configuration locations, overlays, controller utilities, capture tools, parental controls, and mod managers. Microsoft discusses these game-development compatibility concerns in its UAC guidance for game developers.
When administrator mode will not help
If the game still fails after an elevated test, stop treating permissions as the likely root cause. Investigate:
- Missing or corrupted files: verify or repair the installation.
- Outdated GPU drivers, Windows updates, DirectX components, or Visual C++ runtimes.
- Network failures or a game-server outage.
- Graphics settings or hardware below the game’s requirements.
- Broken launcher services.
- Anti-cheat incompatibility.
- Mods, overlays, DLL loaders, or capture tools running at incompatible privilege levels.
Anti-cheat systems may require a specific launch arrangement and can reject unusual methods. Follow the game’s official instructions rather than assuming that administrator mode bypasses anti-cheat.

Security advice
An elevated game can access more protected files, registry locations, and system resources. If the game, launcher, mod, injected component, trainer, cracked executable, or DLL loader is compromised, the potential impact is greater.
- Elevate only software from the official publisher or a reputable platform.
- Do not permanently elevate unknown cracked executables, trainers, patches, or mod tools.
- Revert permanent elevation after troubleshooting if it is no longer required.
- Keep UAC enabled. It exists to limit unauthorized administrator-level changes.
For most games, the best workflow is to test the actual failing executable once, apply permanent elevation only when the evidence or publisher requires it, and remove the setting when the permissions problem is resolved.

It can be reasonable for a trusted executable when troubleshooting, but elevation increases the program’s access. Avoid it for unknown, cracked, or untrusted software.
Can administrator mode bypass anti-cheat?
No. Anti-cheat systems may require particular privilege and launch arrangements, and administrator mode can still fail or even conflict with them.
Can Microsoft Store games be run as administrator?
Not always through the traditional executable method. Store and Xbox apps use different packaging and permission models, so use their repair, update, and publisher-support options.
