“imgcmn.dll was not found,” “imgcmn.dll could not be loaded,” or “The file is not designed to run on Windows” are all signs that an old imaging application is incomplete, incompatible, or missing one of its dependencies.
imgcmn.dll is a legacy component of Kodak/Eastman Software’s Imaging for Windows, historically also called Wang Imaging. It is not a modern Windows runtime, DirectX file, or Visual C++ Redistributable component.
The safest repair is to identify the old program that needs it and repair or reinstall that complete application. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website and place it in System32 or SysWOW64.

- The error appears when opening an old scanner, fax, document-management, Kodak Imaging, or Wang Imaging program: repair or reinstall that parent application first.
- The message mentions
MFC42.DLL,MFC42U.DLL,MSVCRT, or “missing export”: a dependency may be wrong or damaged. Reinstall the complete imaging application instead of replacing the named DLL manually. - The problem started after installing a camera, scanner, printer, or imaging driver: undo or repair that recent installation, then check the driver in Device Manager.
- Windows Security shows that
imgcmn.dllwas quarantined: verify the file’s location and publisher before restoring anything. - The application was copied from another PC: install it properly from its original media. Copying an executable and a few DLLs usually misses controls, registry entries, licensing information, and dependencies.
- Several Windows components are also failing: use DISM and SFC, but remember that these repair protected Windows files, not a missing third-party Imaging for Windows installation.
- The error began after upgrading Windows: the old application may no longer be supported in the current environment. Reinstall it in a compatible environment or use a virtual machine containing the older Windows installation.
What imgcmn.dll belongs to
The file’s internal description is Image-standaardonderdelen, roughly meaning image standard components. It is associated with Imaging voor Windows, a document-imaging product developed through the Wang, Kodak, Eastman Software, Global 360, and later OpenText product lineage.
Imaging for Windows handled tasks such as:
- Viewing document images
- Scanning and printing
- Editing image documents
- OCR-related workflows
- Fax and document-management integrations
Related installations may also contain imaging controls such as imgedit.ocx, imgscan.ocx, and imgthumb.ocx. That is why copying only imgcmn.dll rarely solves the real problem.
Imaging was included with Windows through Windows 2000, but it was not included with Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7 as a standard Windows component. Later releases were distributed separately. On Windows 10 and Windows 11, the file should normally be present only because an older application or separately installed Imaging for Windows package placed it there.
There is no single correct modern location for the file. It may be in the application’s installation directory or in an old Windows component directory. A file in an unexpected folder is not automatically genuine.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPublic file inventories show examples of different historical versions and sizes, but those records do not prove that every copy is interchangeable. Treat the original installer and the file’s publisher information as more useful evidence than a version number found on a download page.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the Imaging application
This is the most likely fix for a straightforward “imgcmn.dll was not found” message.
Identify the program that displays the error
- Close the error message.
- Note the name of the executable in the title bar or message.
- Right-click the shortcut you normally use.
- Select Properties.
- Check the Target field and Start in folder.
- Write down the application name and installation path.
Look for names connected with Kodak Imaging, Wang Imaging, Imaging for Windows, scanning, faxing, document capture, or document management. If a scanner vendor bundled the program, the parent application may use the vendor’s name instead.
Try Windows’ repair option
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for Imaging for Windows, Kodak Imaging, Wang Imaging, or the application named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the program.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Older desktop programs may not offer an Advanced options page. In that case:
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the imaging application.
- Choose Repair or Change if the installer provides it.
- Follow the setup wizard and restart Windows when prompted.
If the error disappears, the missing component was restored as part of the application installation. If the error remains, uninstalling and reinstalling the complete program is usually more effective than repeating the repair.

Reinstall from the original source
Use, in this order:
- The original Imaging for Windows installer
- The scanner, camera, fax, or document-management application’s installer
- OEM recovery media supplied with the equipment
- A supported installation package from the current product owner
Back up documents and application settings before uninstalling. Then:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the relevant imaging application.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer as administrator.
- Restart again before opening the application.
Do not install a DLL by itself. The program may also need imaging controls, legacy Microsoft libraries, registry entries, configuration files, and licensing data.
Repair Imaging for Windows 4.0 with its MSI
OpenText’s Imaging for Windows 4.0 documentation identifies the installer as Imaging for Windows 4.0.msi and documents this repair command:
msiexec /fa "Imaging for Windows 4.0.msi" /passive /promptrestart
To use it:
- Place the MSI in an easily accessible folder.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Change to the folder containing the MSI, if necessary, with
cd. - Run the command exactly as shown.
- Allow the repair to complete.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Test the original application.
This repairs the installed package rather than replacing a single file. If you do not have the matching installer, do not guess at a different MSI or copy files from an older Windows computer.
Fix 2: Handle the MFC42.DLL missing-export error
A particularly important historical error reads:
Error starting program, the IMGCMN.DLL file is linked to missing export MFC42.DLL:6453.
This does not mean that imgcmn.dll is simply absent. It means the application found a version of MFC42.DLL that does not provide the function it expects.
A documented Kodak Imaging case occurred after a Kodak DC120 camera installer replaced MFC42.DLL with an older incompatible version. The correct response was to remove and reinstall Kodak Imaging through the supported Windows setup process.
If your error names MFC42.DLL, MFC42U.DLL, or another missing export:
- Do not download that DLL from a search result.
- Do not rename or overwrite the copy in
System32. - Note which application reports the error.
- Uninstall and reinstall that application from its original source.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the program again.
A shared legacy runtime can be used by several old programs. Replacing it manually may fix one application while breaking another. If the original installer is unavailable, preserve the old system or application environment in a compatible virtual machine rather than mixing DLLs from unrelated releases.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine safely
Security software can remove a legacy file because its age, behavior, packaging, or signature triggers a detection. That does not prove the file is safe, and restoring it without verification is risky.

Check Windows Security
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the application.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
imgcmn.dllor the parent imaging application. - Expand the event and record the detected path, publisher, and action.
Before restoring anything, compare the path with the application’s known installation directory. A file found in a temporary folder, a browser download folder, or an unrelated program directory deserves extra caution.
If the file came from the original installer and the detection is confirmed to be a false positive:
- Scan the complete installer.
- Scan the installed application folder.
- Restore the quarantined file only after verifying its source.
- Reinstall the complete application rather than allowing an isolated DLL permanently.
- Run a full Windows Security scan.
If the file’s source or publisher cannot be verified, leave it quarantined and obtain a clean installer.
Fix 4: Check 32-bit application compatibility and dependencies
Most applications associated with this component belong to the 32-bit software era. A 32-bit program can run on 64-bit Windows through Windows’ compatibility layer, but it still requires the correct 32-bit dependencies and application registration.
Do not choose a DLL merely because a website labels it “32-bit” or “64-bit.” The correct architecture depends on the application and the installer that supplied it.
Check these points:
- Is the application installed in its own program directory?
- Is
imgcmn.dllbeside the executable that reports the error? - Does the error name an OCX control or another DLL?
- Was the application copied instead of installed?
- Did the failure begin after moving it to a newer computer?
- Does the installer complete without errors?
- Does the program require an older Windows version?
A “not designed to run on Windows” message can indicate a corrupted binary, incompatible architecture, or a damaged dependency. It is not proof that placing the file in System32 will help.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do not use regsvr32 as a general repair
regsvr32 works only with DLLs or controls that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal command for missing DLL errors.
Do not run:
regsvr32 imgcmn.dll
unless the application vendor specifically documents that this particular file is a self-registering component. The related Imaging for Windows ActiveX controls may require registration in a supported installation, but that does not establish that imgcmn.dll should be registered separately.
If an installer says a control failed to register, use the installer’s repair process first. Registering random files manually can create additional architecture and permission errors.

Fix 5: Repair scanner or camera drivers
If the error started immediately after installing a scanner, camera, printer, or imaging driver, the driver package may have damaged or replaced part of the old application environment.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Inspect Device Manager
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Cameras, Imaging devices, Printers, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for a yellow warning icon or the device connected with the problem.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Select the Driver tab and record the provider and date.
- If the problem began after an update, select Roll Back Driver when available.
- If rollback is unavailable, choose Uninstall Device.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the driver supplied by the equipment manufacturer.
- Reinstall the imaging application afterward.
Do not remove a working device driver solely because imgcmn.dll is missing. Use this path when the timing and Device Manager evidence point to a driver change.
When identifying stale drivers across several devices manually, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies the issues, while driver installation through the full version is optional. The original scanner or camera manufacturer’s driver remains the appropriate source for hardware-specific compatibility.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these tools when Windows itself appears damaged, several protected components fail, or an old Imaging component was genuinely part of the Windows installation. They will not recreate a missing third-party Imaging for Windows directory.
Run DISM first
- Save your work.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows if requested.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and test the application.
Possible results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected Windows files appear intact. Repair the imaging application instead.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. If the result is unchanged, focus on the parent application or obtain Windows repair help.
The manual process means comparing command output and determining whether another component changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention, while repair through the full version is optional. For an app-specific imgcmn.dll failure, reinstalling Imaging for Windows remains the definitive fix.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is appropriate when the failure began after installing a driver, camera utility, scanner package, or other software and a restore point exists from before that change.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the applications and drivers that will be affected.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore changes system files, installed programs, drivers, and registry settings but is not a substitute for backing up personal files. After restoration, reinstall the imaging application from its original source if its files remain incomplete.
What not to do
Avoid these common dead ends:
- Downloading
imgcmn.dllfrom a generic DLL site - Copying the file into
System32 - Copying a 32-bit file into
SysWOW64based only on the name - Replacing
MFC42.DLLmanually - Running
regsvr32against every DLL in the application folder - Copying an Imaging installation from Windows 2000 to Windows 11
- Disabling antivirus permanently
- Installing a modern Visual C++ package without an error that identifies it
- Installing DirectX to fix an Imaging for Windows component
- Repairing Windows repeatedly when only one third-party application is broken
The Microsoft Visual C++ documentation advises following the application vendor’s instructions when repairing an application. There is no evidence that a modern Visual C++ Redistributable supplies imgcmn.dll.
If the program still will not start
Collect the information below before trying another repair:
- The complete error text
- The executable name
- The application’s installation path
- Your Windows edition and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The date the problem began
- Recent camera, scanner, printer, antivirus, or Windows changes
- Any named dependency such as
MFC42.DLL,MSVCRT, or an OCX file - The file’s path, publisher, and digital-signature status
- Whether the original installer or OEM recovery media is available
If the application is no longer supported, the practical solution may be a compatible older Windows environment or a virtual machine containing the original installation. Do not treat files copied from another computer as a supported migration.

FAQ
Is imgcmn.dll a Windows system file?
It is a legacy Imaging for Windows component. It was associated with older Windows-era imaging software, but it is not a normal component of current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installations.
Should I download imgcmn.dll?
No. A downloaded replacement may contain malware, belong to a different release, use the wrong architecture, or fail because the real problem is a missing dependency. Repair the parent Imaging for Windows application from its original installer.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Does the file belong in System32 or SysWOW64?
There is no universal correct location. Use the path created by the supported application installer. Do not choose a folder based only on whether the application is old or 32-bit.
Can SFC restore it?
Only if the affected copy is part of protected Windows files. SFC does not normally reinstall a separately distributed Imaging for Windows package.
Do I need the latest Visual C++ Redistributable?
Not based on imgcmn.dll alone. Install a runtime only when the complete error and the application’s documentation identify that runtime as required.
Why does the error mention MFC42.DLL?
That usually indicates an incompatible or damaged legacy Microsoft Foundation Class dependency. Reinstall the complete imaging application rather than downloading or replacing MFC42.DLL.
Recommended Free Tools
Will regsvr32 imgcmn.dll fix the problem?
Usually not. regsvr32 applies only to self-registering components. Use the vendor’s installer or repair process unless the vendor explicitly instructs you to register this file.
What is the safest fix on Windows 11?
Identify the application that needs the file, obtain its original supported installer, and reinstall the complete package. If it cannot run on current Windows, preserve the original environment in a compatible virtual machine rather than mixing old DLLs into Windows folders.
