msgr3fr.dll Is Missing: Repair French Proofing Without Downloads

Length11 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team

Start with this three-minute check

Before replacing anything, write down:

  • Which program shows the error: Word, Excel, Outlook, another Office program, or a third-party installer.
  • When it appears: during startup, while checking spelling, after an Office update, or after removing a language pack.
  • Which Office architecture is installed: 32-bit or 64-bit.
  • Whether the problem affects one Office program or the whole suite.
  • Whether Windows Security recently quarantined an Office file.

msgr3fr.dll is the Microsoft French Grammar Checker, a Microsoft Office language-proofing component historically distributed with Natural Language Components. It is not an ordinary Windows system DLL, so downloading a replacement and copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 is usually the wrong repair.

The safest path is to repair the Office installation that originally supplied the file. If French proofing was removed or never installed, add the matching Office language or proofing package afterward.

What msgr3fr.dll does

msgr3fr.dll is associated with French grammar checking and other Office natural-language features. Historical Office proofing records list it alongside the French language lexicon file Msgr3fr.lex.

Public file inventories describe historical 32-bit versions including 5.1.5512.2 and 3.1.0.2303. Those records do not establish that either version belongs in every current Microsoft 365 installation, and they do not prove a universal file path or compatibility result.

This distinction matters:

  • It belongs to an Office language-proofing component, not to the core Windows installation.
  • It may have been installed by an older Office proofing-tools package, a language accessory pack, or an Office suite.
  • A current French proofing package may not contain the same legacy binary as an Office 2003 or Office 2007 installation.
  • The filename alone cannot identify the program currently requesting it.

If the message appears when Word, Excel, or Outlook starts, repair Office first. If it appears while a third-party installer runs, find out which Office component that installer is invoking before changing any DLL.

Fix 1: Repair Office from Installed apps

This is the quickest and most likely fix for a current Office or Microsoft 365 installation.

Quick Repair

  1. Close Word, Excel, Outlook, and every other Office program.
  2. Right-click Start.
  3. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps and features on Windows 10.
  4. Find Microsoft 365, Microsoft Office, or the specific Office installation.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  6. Choose Modify.
  7. Approve the administrator prompt if Windows displays one.
  8. Select Quick Repair.
  9. Click Repair and wait for the process to finish.
  10. Restart Windows.
  11. Open the program that produced the error.

Quick Repair replaces or repairs enough of the local Office installation to correct many incomplete language-component files. Test Word’s spelling and grammar features as well as normal startup.

Online Repair

Use Online Repair if Quick Repair does not restore the file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Close all Office programs.
  2. Return to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Open the menu beside Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365.
  4. Select Modify.
  5. Choose Online Repair.
  6. Select Repair.
  7. Keep the computer connected to the internet until the process ends.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Test the affected Office program again.

Online Repair replaces more of the Office installation than Quick Repair. It can also reset parts of the installation, so save open documents and note any custom Office settings before starting.

If the repair wizard cannot find the installation source, the Office installation may be incomplete or may use older installation media. In that case, use Microsoft’s supported Office recovery or reinstall process rather than copying msgr3fr.dll from another computer.

Fix 2: Reinstall French proofing tools

Repairing Office will not help if French proofing was removed, never installed, or belongs to a different Office generation.

Check the proofing status in Office

  1. Open Word.
  2. Select File > Options.
  3. Select Language.
  4. Look under Office authoring and proofing languages.
  5. Find French in the language list.
  6. If the status says Proofing installed, the component is present and the error may involve a damaged file or dependency.
  7. If the status says Proofing available, select the installation link and follow the prompts.
  8. Restart Word after installation.

Microsoft 365 language accessory packs provide French proofing tools and separate 32-bit and 64-bit downloads. Use the package intended for the Office generation installed on the computer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Match the Office architecture

Do not choose based only on whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit. A 64-bit version of Windows can run 32-bit Office, and a 32-bit Office process needs the 32-bit proofing component.

To check the Office architecture:

  1. Open Word or another Office program.
  2. Select File > Account.
  3. Select About Word, About Excel, or the equivalent link.
  4. Read the information in the About dialog. It identifies whether Office is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  5. Close the dialog without changing anything.

Choose the proofing package with the same architecture as Office. For supported Office releases, Microsoft’s French packages include separate x86 and x64 installers. Office 2013 packages use names such as proofingtools_fr-fr-x86.exe and proofingtools_fr-fr-x64.exe. Office 2016 packages use names such as proofingtools2016_fr-fr-x86.exe and proofingtools2016_fr-fr-x64.exe.

Use Microsoft’s Office 2013 French proofing tools, Office 2016 French proofing tools, or the Microsoft 365 language accessory pack, depending on the installed Office product.

After installation:

  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Open Word.
  3. Go to File > Options > Language.
  4. Confirm that French shows Proofing installed.
  5. Open a document and test French spelling or grammar checking.
  6. Launch the Office program that originally displayed the error.

If the package installs successfully but the same message remains, check for a mixed Office installation. For example, an older MSI-based Office installation and a Click-to-Run installation can interfere with one another. Remove the unneeded Office product through Settings > Apps, then repair or reinstall the remaining supported installation.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software can remove or quarantine an Office file after an update, repair, or scan. Do not restore the file blindly.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Windows Security and open it.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Review recent entries for an Office installation or msgr3fr.dll.
  6. Expand an entry to view its location and action.
  7. Restore or allow the file only if you can confirm that it came from the genuine Office installation.
  8. Run a full scan if the security event is unclear.
  9. Repair Office after resolving the quarantine event.

Microsoft warns that restoring a real threat can expose the device. If Windows Security repeatedly quarantines the file, do not keep restoring it. Scan the complete Office installation and obtain the component through Microsoft’s Office installer or repair process.

A file can also be present but still fail to load if a companion file, dependency, or language lexicon is missing. That is another reason an Office repair is safer than restoring one DLL.

Fix 4: Repair Windows components when broader corruption is suspected

msgr3fr.dll is normally an Office file, not a Windows-protected system file. Use DISM and SFC when other Windows components are also failing, Windows updates are damaged, or several unrelated applications report corrupted system files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run DISM first

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
  3. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  4. Enter this command:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait until the command completes.
  3. Leave the elevated window open.

DISM repairs the Windows component store used by System File Checker. It may take time and can appear to pause.

Run SFC second

In the same administrator window, enter:

sfc /scannow

Press Enter and wait for verification to reach 100 percent.

Restart Windows afterward and retry Office. If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the affected application. If it reports that it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. These commands do not replace reinstalling an Office proofing component.

Running DISM and SFC repeatedly without identifying what changed usually wastes time. If the error is isolated to Word or another Office program, return to Office Repair and language-component installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If manually running DISM and SFC leaves you hunting through logs without showing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying issues; its free scan identifies problems, while repair features require the full version. It is optional, and Office repair remains the definitive fix when the missing component belongs to Office.

Fix 5: Investigate an Office update, cleanup, or incomplete uninstall

The timing of the error often identifies the cause.

After an Office update

Run Quick Repair, then Online Repair if needed. Check File > Options > Language afterward to confirm that French proofing is still installed.

After removing a language pack

Reinstall French proofing for the same Office generation and architecture. Do not install a random older package simply because its filename resembles the missing file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After disk cleanup

Check the Office installation with Modify rather than restoring files from a backup or another computer. Cleanup may have removed an incomplete installation artifact, but the correct repair must restore the complete component set and its dependencies.

After an incomplete uninstall

Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and look for multiple Microsoft Office entries. Remove obsolete or incomplete installations, restart Windows, and repair the Office product you actually use.

If repair cannot complete, uninstall and reinstall Office through Microsoft’s supported process. A clean Windows reinstall is not justified for an isolated Office proofing-DLL error.

Fix 6: Do not register msgr3fr.dll with regsvr32

regsvr32 is not a general-purpose DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly ActiveX or COM components.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no established evidence that msgr3fr.dll is a self-registering COM DLL. Running a command such as this is therefore not a routine repair:

regsvr32 msgr3fr.dll

It may produce an error about a missing entry point, or it may distract from the actual problem: a damaged Office installation, missing language component, wrong architecture, or missing dependency.

Use Modify > Quick Repair, Online Repair, or the correct official proofing installer instead.

Fix 7: Consider a legacy Office installation

An old Office installation may be the reason a current language package does not restore the file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Historical Office proofing-tool records list Msgr3fr.dll and Msgr3fr.lex, including a record associated with Office 2003 Proofing Tools. Office 2003 Proofing Tools reached the end of extended support on January 14, 2014.

If an old Office 2003 or Office 2007 application is required:

  1. Identify the exact Office product and edition in Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
  2. Check whether the original licensed installation media or approved installer is available.
  3. Remove incomplete duplicate Office installations only after confirming which product must remain.
  4. Reinstall the original proofing tools for that Office generation.
  5. Restart Windows and test the legacy application.

A current Microsoft 365 French language package may not contain the same legacy msgr3fr.dll binary. If the old program is optional, migrating to a supported Office release is safer than trying to reconstruct an obsolete installation with isolated files.

Fix 8: Update drivers only when the error belongs to an installer or device package

msgr3fr.dll is not a device driver. Driver updates are not a primary fix when Word, Excel, or Outlook reports the error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Investigate drivers only if the message appears inside a device vendor’s installer, the installer launches an Office-related document component, or Device Manager also reports a problem.

To check Device Manager:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the device category related to the installer.
  4. Look for a warning icon.
  5. Right-click the device and select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
  8. Retry the original installer.

Do not remove an unrelated driver merely because the DLL error appeared at the same time. First identify the calling application and repair that application.

If checking every device manually is leaving you guessing which of dozens of drivers is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation requires the full version. It is optional, and it will not replace the Office proofing component when Office is the actual owner.

What each error message usually means

The wording narrows the investigation but does not prove that msgr3fr.dll itself is the only damaged item.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Message What it usually indicates Best first action
“msgr3fr.dll was not found” The calling program cannot find the expected Office component Repair Office
“msgr3fr.dll is missing” The file or its expected installation component is unavailable Check Office language settings and repair
“Could not be loaded” The file may be present, but a dependency, companion file, or architecture may be wrong Verify the path and repair the matching Office installation
“Entry point not found” The calling program and DLL may be from incompatible versions Remove mixed installations and reinstall the matching package
“Not designed to run on Windows” The file may be damaged, incompatible, or not the expected architecture Do not download another copy; run Online Repair
“Missing or corrupted” Windows or Office detected an unreadable or incompatible component Check Protection History, then repair Office

The phrase “specified module could not be found” can mean that msgr3fr.dll is present but one of its dependencies is missing. Do not assume that copying the named file will resolve it.

Why random DLL downloads make the problem worse

Avoid individual DLL download sites sites and files copied from another PC. A replacement may have:

  • The wrong Office generation.
  • The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
  • A different version from the one expected by the calling program.
  • Missing companion files or dependencies.
  • An altered or malicious payload.
  • No valid Microsoft installation context.

Do not copy msgr3fr.dll into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or a random application folder. There is no evidence that this file belongs in either Windows system directory.

The safe sources are Microsoft’s Office repair process, Microsoft’s language accessory pack, and the official Microsoft Download Center package that matches the installed Office generation and architecture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should you use System Restore

Use System Restore only when all of these are true:

  • The file worked previously.
  • A recent software or system change clearly preceded the failure.
  • A restore point predates that change.
  • Office repair did not resolve the problem.

To open it:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Enter rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select Next.
  5. Choose a restore point from before the failure.
  6. Select Next, review the affected drives, and confirm.
  7. Let Windows restart and complete the restore.
  8. Test Office.

System Restore returns system state to an earlier point. It is not a replacement for reinstalling Office proofing tools, and it may not restore a missing language component.

Final escalation checklist

If the error remains, collect these details before making another change:

  1. The exact program showing the message.
  2. Whether it appears during startup, document editing, spell-checking, or installation.
  3. The Office product and version.
  4. Whether Office is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  5. The actual path of any existing msgr3fr.dll.
  6. The file’s digital signature and publisher information.
  7. The result of Office Quick Repair and Online Repair.
  8. The status of French under File > Options > Language.
  9. Any Windows Security Protection History event.
  10. Whether multiple Office installations appear in Installed apps.
  11. Whether the application is Office 2003/2007-era software or a supported current release.

If Word, Excel, or Outlook is the caller, the practical endpoint is usually an Office repair followed by installation of the matching French proofing tools. If an old licensed Office program is the caller, restore that exact Office generation or replace it with a supported release. Do not treat msgr3fr.dll as a standalone Windows system file.
