If Windows reports that rasauto.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, the problem usually involves a damaged Windows component rather than Visual C++. The safest repair is to restore Windows system files with DISM and SFC, then repair the individual application if only one program is affected.
Common messages include:
- “The program can’t start because rasauto.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because rasauto.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting rasauto.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading rasauto.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “rasauto.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These are commonly reported variants, not a separate official Microsoft error classification. The wording can indicate that the file is missing, damaged, the wrong architecture, or that another dependency failed to load.
The 60-second answer
rasauto.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows system DLL. Its description is commonly shown as Remote Access AutoDial Manager, and it is associated with the Windows Remote Access Auto Connection Manager service, whose service name is RasAuto.
Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website. Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:

sfc /scannow
Restart Windows when both commands finish.
On 64-bit Windows, the normal 64-bit copy is:
%WinDir%System32rasauto.dll
A 32-bit application can use the 32-bit Windows system directory through WOW64 redirection, commonly represented as:
%WinDir%SysWOW64rasauto.dll
The correct location depends on Windows architecture and the process loading the file. Do not manually copy the System32 version into SysWOW64, or vice versa.
What rasauto.dll does
rasauto.dll is part of Microsoft Windows, not a normal Visual C++ Redistributable file and not a driver supplied by a game publisher.
The associated RasAuto service creates a remote-network connection when software references a remote DNS or NetBIOS name or address. This behavior is part of Windows remote-access and autodial functionality. A VPN, dial-up feature, legacy business application, or older networking component may expose the error, but the file itself belongs to Windows.

Check its signature and location before treating it as genuine.
Where the file should be
On 64-bit Windows, check:
C:WindowsSystem32rasauto.dll
The %WinDir% variable may point to a different Windows folder, so using %WinDir% is safer than assuming the drive and directory name.
To check the file:
- Press Windows key + E.
- Enter
%WinDir%System32in the address bar. - Look for
rasauto.dll. - If the affected program is 32-bit, also inspect
%WinDir%SysWOW64. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Inspect the signer and use View Certificate to confirm that the signature is associated with Microsoft.
A third-party inventory may show historical Windows build versions, but those values are not universal current versions. Windows system DLLs vary by Windows release, servicing level, architecture, and cumulative updates. The copy installed and serviced by your Windows build is the one you want.
Microsoft explains the distinction between the 64-bit System32 directory and the 32-bit directory used through WOW64 in its File System Redirector documentation.
Why the error may have started
The timing often identifies the repair path.
After Windows Update or an interrupted restart
An incomplete update can leave protected files or the Windows component store inconsistent. This is especially likely if other Windows features began failing at the same time.
Use DISM followed by SFC, then install pending updates and restart.
After installing or removing a program
A failed installer or uninstaller may have left an application with broken dependencies. If Windows works normally and only one program reports rasauto.dll, repair that program before changing Windows networking components.
After antivirus quarantine
Security software may have quarantined a damaged or replaced copy. Check the protection history, but do not restore a file blindly. The safer approach is usually to let Windows servicing restore the protected copy.
After a crash, disk problem, or abrupt shutdown
File-system corruption can remove or damage system files. If DISM and SFC repeatedly find new corruption, check the disk and back up important files before deeper recovery.
After malware removal
Malware cleanup can expose missing or altered system files. Run Microsoft Defender scans and use Windows repair rather than restoring an unknown DLL.
After cloning or restoring Windows
A cloned installation or incomplete image restore can leave files and component metadata mismatched. Do not replace rasauto.dll with a copy taken from another Windows computer.

Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the primary fix when the file is missing from the Windows directory, several applications fail, or the problem began after servicing, a crash, disk corruption, or malware cleanup.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter and wait for the operation to complete.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC uses that store as the source for replacing damaged protected files, which is why Microsoft recommends running DISM first.
Run SFC
In the same administrator Command Prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and allow the scan to reach 100 percent. Then restart Windows.
A successful result may say that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. If the result says no integrity violations were found, the problem may involve an application, a dependency, or an architecture mismatch rather than a damaged system copy.

- Restart Windows.
- Run the DISM command again.
- Run

- If repair still fails, continue to the recovery steps below.
Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work of hunting through repeated repair attempts by showing what it identifies as damaged; its free scan shows the findings, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and DISM and SFC remain the appropriate Windows servicing tools.
Microsoft’s procedure is documented in its System File Checker and DISM guidance.
Fix 2: Install pending Windows updates
A pending cumulative update or incomplete restart may be the cause.
Windows 11
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Run DISM and SFC again if the error remains.
Windows 10
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates and restart.
- Repeat the DISM and SFC repair order if necessary.
Do not select a DLL based on a version number found online. Windows should supply the version appropriate for the installed release and servicing level.

Fix 3: Use Windows 11’s repair reinstall
Supported Windows 11 installations may offer a repair option that reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving applications, files, and settings.
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts and keep the computer connected to power.
This is useful when DISM and SFC cannot repair protected files or the component store remains inconsistent. The option may not appear on every installation.
See Microsoft’s instructions for reinstalling the current Windows version to repair system files and components.
Fix 4: Repair the affected application
If Windows starts normally and only one application or game reports rasauto.dll, the program may have a damaged installation or an incorrect dependency reference.
Use the program’s launcher
Open the application’s official launcher and look for an option named:
- Verify
- Verify integrity of files
- Repair
- Scan and repair
Allow the process to finish, then restart the application. If the launcher replaces application files, test the program before making other system changes.
Use Windows application repair
For applications that support the feature:
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
Not every desktop application provides Repair or Reset. If Repair does not help, uninstall the program and reinstall it from its official publisher or launcher. Reinstalling the application is the definitive fix when its own installation is damaged.

Do not assume that reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET will restore rasauto.dll. Those packages may be relevant to a separate error, but rasauto.dll is a Windows RAS component rather than a normal Visual C++ runtime DLL.
Fix 5: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
If the file disappeared after a security scan:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent quarantined items.
- Check whether the item’s path was a normal Windows directory.
- Confirm the file’s signature and run DISM and SFC before restoring anything.
Do not restore a quarantined item solely because its name is rasauto.dll. A malicious file can use a legitimate filename, and a copied file can be damaged or incompatible. Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined item places it back on the device and may cause Defender to detect it again.
The safer sequence is to scan the system, repair Windows with DISM and SFC, and restore only an item you have verified as genuine. Microsoft’s Protection History guidance explains the available actions.
Fix 6: Check the application architecture
A 32-bit program and a 64-bit program do not necessarily load the same system-file path.
On 64-bit Windows:
- 64-bit system components normally reside in
%WinDir%System32. - 32-bit applications are redirected to the 32-bit system directory through WOW64.
- A missing file in
SysWOW64does not mean you should copy theSystem32file there.
A “not designed to run on Windows” message can result from a copied file from another Windows release, a damaged file, or an architecture mismatch. Restore the Windows-managed version with DISM and SFC rather than trying several downloaded builds.

Fix 7: Check the network component and drivers
Driver reinstallation is not a direct repair for rasauto.dll, but it can help if the error appeared alongside a broken VPN, network adapter, or remote-access connection.
Check the Device Manager status
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected adapter.
- Select Properties.
- Read the status on the General tab.
- Open the Driver tab to review available actions.
Use Update driver only with a driver supplied through Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer. If a VPN has its own virtual adapter, use the VPN publisher’s official repair or reinstall procedure.
Outbyte Driver Updater can show which installed drivers it identifies as stale, avoiding the manual process of checking many adapter and virtual-network driver versions; its free scan reports findings, while installation is handled by the full version. It is optional and does not replace DISM or SFC for repairing rasauto.dll.

Why regsvr32 rasauto.dll usually does not help
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose the DllRegisterServer entry point used for registry registration, typically COM or ActiveX components.
rasauto.dll is not normally a self-registering COM/ActiveX DLL. Running:
regsvr32 rasauto.dll
may produce an error stating that the module was loaded but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. It may also report a loading problem if the command is run from the wrong location.

Avoid downloading rasauto.dll from a DLL index, file-sharing page, forum attachment, or search result. A loose DLL can:
- Contain malware.
- Have the wrong Windows build.
- Use the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- Be missing a valid Microsoft signature.
- Cause a loader error because its dependencies do not match.
- Hide the underlying component-store or disk problem.
- Be overwritten by Windows servicing later.
The safe sources are Windows Update, the installed Windows component store, compatible Microsoft installation media, and the official installer for the application reporting the error.

After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Then restart and test again.
Use System Restore or Windows recovery
Use System Restore when the error began after a recent application, driver, update, or system configuration change and a restore point exists.
- Open Start.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs and complete the wizard.
System Restore does not replace personal files, but it can remove recently installed software or drivers.

Frequently asked questions
Is rasauto.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. Genuine rasauto.dll is part of the Microsoft Windows Operating System and is associated with the RasAuto service. Verify the path and Microsoft digital signature because any file with the same name in another directory must be investigated separately.
Is rasauto.dll part of Visual C++ 2015?
No. The available evidence identifies it as a Windows Remote Access Auto Connection Manager component, not a standard Visual C++ Redistributable file. Installing Visual C++ is not the logical first repair.
Should I copy rasauto.dll into System32?
No. Do not copy a downloaded or separately extracted DLL into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder. Use DISM and SFC to restore the Windows-managed file.
What if the file exists but Windows still says it is missing?
“The specified module could not be found” can mean that rasauto.dll exists but one of its dependencies cannot load. It can also indicate the wrong architecture or a damaged file. Run DISM and SFC, then repair the affected application.
Do I need to reinstall my network driver?
Usually not for this DLL alone. Check Device Manager and repair a VPN or network adapter only when there is a separate driver problem. Driver reinstallation does not replace Windows component servicing.
Should I enable a Windows Feature?
Not as a first step. rasauto.dll is restored through Windows servicing, not by randomly enabling optional features. Changing features is appropriate only when a specific Windows function requires it and Microsoft’s documentation directs you to do so.
Does Windows 10 use the same repair process?
The main repair path is the same: install pending updates, run DISM, run SFC, restart, and repair the affected application. Menu names differ slightly between Windows 10 and Windows 11.
When is reinstalling the application the right answer?
Reinstall the application when Windows works normally and only that program fails, especially after its files were changed or its installer was interrupted. Use its official launcher or publisher rather than adding a loose DLL manually.
