heidi6.dll is an Autodesk application file associated with the Heidi Graphics System. If Windows says heidi6.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair the Autodesk installation that owns the file rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing anything, record:
- The exact Autodesk program that fails: AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, Civil 3D, or another Autodesk application
- The complete error text, including any code such as
0xc000007b - The file path shown in the message, if there is one
- Whether the failure affects startup, a particular drawing, or a graphics mode
- Whether the problem began after an update, failed installation, cleanup, antivirus action, or disk problem
- Whether the affected Autodesk product is 32-bit or 64-bit
This distinction matters because heidi6.dll belongs to an Autodesk application, not to Windows. A file from one Autodesk release may not work with another release, even when both use the same filename.
The safest first fix: repair Autodesk
A repair restores missing application files without asking you to identify individual DLLs. It is the best first step when the message says that heidi6.dll is missing or cannot be found.
Use Repair or Reinstall in Control Panel
This path applies to Autodesk products that use the classic Windows installer:

- Close the Autodesk application.
- Press
Windowsand type Control Panel. - Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs, then Programs and Features.
- Find the affected Autodesk product.
- Right-click it and select Uninstall/Change.
- Choose Repair.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Start the same Autodesk program before restoring plug-ins, custom profiles, or third-party add-ons.
Autodesk’s repair option restores missing product files. Its Reinstall option goes further by restoring files and repairing registry entries. If Repair completes but the error remains, repeat the process and choose Reinstall instead.
Reinstall newer Autodesk products
Some Autodesk products, including products using newer installation procedures, may not offer a Repair option in Control Panel. In that case:
- Open the Autodesk application list or Autodesk Account.
- Locate the exact product and release that fails.
- Uninstall that product using its supported uninstall procedure.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from Autodesk Account or use the original official installation media.
- Install the same product release again.
- Launch it before adding plug-ins or importing custom settings.
Do not install a different Autodesk product merely because its name is similar. AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, Civil 3D, and other Autodesk applications can have separate files and dependencies.
If a clean uninstall is necessary, preserve templates, profiles, licenses, plot styles, and customizations first. Autodesk uninstall procedures can remove shared components or settings.

Repair succeeded if:
- The application starts without the
heidi6.dllmessage - The file is restored inside the Autodesk installation directory
- The program opens a blank drawing or its normal start screen
- The same failure does not return after a restart
If the file disappears again after repair, do not keep repeating the repair. Check antivirus history and storage health next.
Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine an application file after an update or after a scan. A missing file that was present previously may have been removed rather than lost during installation.
Check Protection History
- Press
Windowsand type Windows Security. - Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the Autodesk application stopped starting.
- Open any entry that identifies the Autodesk installation folder or
heidi6.dll.
Use Restore or Allow on device only if you have verified all of the following:
- The file came from the installed Autodesk product
- The path belongs to the correct Autodesk installation
- The file has a valid Autodesk signature or was restored by the official installer
- The detection is not associated with suspicious software in the same folder

After restoring a trusted file, run Autodesk Repair anyway. A quarantined file may be only one symptom of an incomplete or mismatched installation. If the file is quarantined again, leave it removed and investigate the detection rather than repeatedly allowing it.

Match the error to the likely cause
Different messages point to different problems.
“The code execution cannot proceed because heidi6.dll was not found”
This normally means the file is absent from the location where the Autodesk program expects it. It does not prove that the DLL itself was the original cause. The installation may be incomplete, the file may have been quarantined, or a failed update may have left files from different releases.
Use Autodesk Repair or Reinstall first. Do not copy a DLL from another computer unless it came from the exact same Autodesk product build and trusted installation media.
“Entry point not found”
An entry-point error usually indicates that Windows found a DLL but the application requested a function that the loaded file does not provide. Common causes include:

- A mismatched Autodesk component
- A damaged or incompatible dependency
Repair or reinstall the complete Autodesk product. Replacing only heidi6.dll can leave the rest of the installation mismatched.
Error 0xc000007b
This code commonly points to an architecture or dependency mismatch. A 32-bit application needs compatible 32-bit components, while a 64-bit application needs compatible 64-bit components. Installing only an x64 runtime does not repair a 32-bit application.
Do not treat 0xc000007b as proof that one particular DLL is defective. Rebuild the complete Autodesk installation first, then check runtimes.
Check the Visual C++ runtime
A cataloged build of heidi6.dll references older Microsoft C runtime files. That means a missing or damaged runtime can contribute to startup failure, but heidi6.dll itself is not a Visual C++ Redistributable file.

- Use the x64 package for a 64-bit Autodesk application
- Install both when separate applications on the same computer require different architectures
Older Autodesk products may require a legacy runtime that is not replaced by the newest package. If the Autodesk installer includes prerequisites, prefer those prerequisites for that product release.
To repair an installed runtime:
- Press
Windowsand type Installed apps. - Open Installed apps.
- Search for Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable.
- Select the package matching the affected application.
- Choose Modify.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows and test Autodesk.
If Repair does not help, return to the official Microsoft download page and install the matching package. Do not download individual runtime DLLs.

Autodesk’s Heidi graphics system also uses .hdi display-driver modules. These are different from heidi6.dll.
If the error names a file such as gdi8.hdi, acaddm16.hdi, or another file in an Autodesk Drv directory, follow the graphics-driver path rather than treating it as a generic missing DLL.
Check the graphics path
- Start the Autodesk program if it opens far enough to show settings.
- Open its graphics or display settings.
- Temporarily disable hardware acceleration, if that option is available.
- Restart the application.
- If the application now starts, update or reinstall the graphics driver from the GPU or computer manufacturer.
- Re-enable hardware acceleration after testing, if the updated driver resolves the issue.
If the application cannot start, use Windows instead:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers, or install the correct package obtained from the computer or GPU manufacturer.
- Restart Windows.

Autodesk remains the definitive source for repairing the application and its Heidi files.
If updating the driver does not help, return the display settings to their previous state and repair the Autodesk installation. A .hdi error may be caused by a damaged Autodesk graphics module rather than the display driver itself.
Use Windows repair commands only for Windows corruption
heidi6.dll is normally an Autodesk application file, so Windows component repair commands will not normally recreate it. They are appropriate when other Windows applications also fail, system files are damaged, or the problem began after broader operating-system corruption.
Run the commands in this order:
- Press
Windows. - Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Autodesk application.
DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses. SFC checks protected Windows files. Neither command is a substitute for reinstalling an Autodesk application file.

If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, review the result, restart, and run the commands again only when Windows corruption is a credible part of the evidence. Do not keep running them as a replacement for Autodesk Repair.

Do not register or copy the DLL blindly
Do not use regsvr32 for this problem
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It does not restore missing application files and does not repair an ordinary runtime library.
Running:
regsvr32 heidi6.dll
is generally inappropriate for heidi6.dll. It can produce an error that adds confusion without addressing the installation problem. Use Autodesk Repair or Reinstall instead.
Do not copy it into Windows folders
Do not place heidi6.dll in:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- Another Autodesk product’s directory
- The application directory of a different release
Those locations can create version conflicts and may cause Windows to load the wrong file.

Avoid random DLL download sites
A generic download may contain malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible build, or a file altered from its original state. A DLL that makes the first message disappear can still leave the Autodesk installation broken.
The safe sources are:
- Autodesk’s official installer
- Autodesk Account
- Original Autodesk installation media
- Microsoft’s official runtime packages when a dependency requires them
A third-party file catalog may report a description, architecture, version, or dependency list, but that metadata is not a universal Autodesk specification. Autodesk products can ship different builds of the file.

Architecture errors are especially relevant when the message includes 0xc000007b or appears after manually replacing a file.
Check the installation path shown by the error. Then compare it with the product you actually launch. For example, a file under one AutoCAD release should not be replaced with a file copied from another release.
Also check whether:
- The Autodesk executable is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The installed Visual C++ runtime matches that architecture
- A plug-in installed files from another Autodesk release
- A cleanup utility removed shared components
- The application was updated while it was still running
If you cannot establish the correct architecture, do not guess by downloading both versions of heidi6.dll. Reinstall the complete Autodesk product so its installer selects the correct files.
Try a clean user-profile test
A damaged Autodesk profile or plug-in can make a valid installation appear broken.

To test this:
- Open Settings.
- Select Accounts.
- Select Other users.
- Choose Add account.
- Create a temporary local Windows account.
- Sign in to that account.
- Launch the Autodesk program.
If it works in the temporary profile, the original profile, Autodesk settings, or a plug-in is likely involved. Reset Autodesk settings using the product’s supported reset option, then add customizations back one at a time.
If the same heidi6.dll error appears in the new profile, focus on the product installation, dependencies, quarantine history, and graphics components.
When repair still does not work
Collect this information before contacting Autodesk support or performing another uninstall:
- Autodesk product name and release
- Windows version
- Exact error text and error code
- Full path shown for
heidi6.dllor an.hdifile - Application architecture
- Date the problem began
- Whether it followed an update, antivirus event, cleanup, or disk failure
- Protection History entries
- Autodesk installer or setup logs
- Results of Repair, Reinstall, Visual C++ repair, and graphics-driver testing
- Whether the program works under a new Windows profile
If a repaired file disappears again, inspect antivirus logs, ransomware-protection events, disk errors, and available storage. If the failure began immediately after a known system change and no current installer is available, System Restore may be a fallback. Back up important files first.
FAQ
Is heidi6.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with Autodesk’s Heidi Graphics System and should normally be restored through the Autodesk product that uses it.
Which Autodesk program installed it?
The filename alone cannot identify whether the owner is AutoCAD, Civil 3D, AutoCAD LT, or another Autodesk application. Use the path in the error and the installed-product list to identify the owner.

Do not download it from a random DLL site. Restore it with the exact Autodesk installer or official installation media for the affected product.
Should I run regsvr32 heidi6.dll?

Do not assume that. Catalog information may describe one particular build, while Autodesk products can ship different builds. Match the file and dependencies to the installed product.
Why does the message mention an .hdi file instead?
