“The program can’t start because wlansvcpal.dll is missing from your computer.” The wlansvcpal.dll error usually points to damaged Windows networking components, not a missing game runtime.
wlansvcpal.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system file named Windows WLAN AutoConfig Service PAL DLL. It belongs to the WLAN AutoConfig component, which discovers, connects to, and disconnects from wireless networks. The safest repair is to restore Windows component files with DISM and SFC rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
Which fix applies to you
Use the description that matches what you see:
- The file is absent from
C:WindowsSystem32: run Windows Update, DISM, and SFC. - The file exists, but Wi-Fi will not connect: check the WLAN AutoConfig service and wireless driver.
- Only one old application reports the error: repair or reinstall that application, then inspect its dependencies.
- The file was quarantined: review Microsoft Defender Protection history before restoring anything.
- The error began after an update or cleanup operation: install pending updates, use System Restore, or perform a Windows repair reinstall.
- The message says “specified module could not be found”: the named DLL may exist while a dependent DLL is missing or incompatible.
- The file is outside the Windows component directories or has no valid Microsoft signature: treat it as suspicious and scan the system.
What wlansvcpal.dll does
The normal path is:
C:WindowsSystem32wlansvcpal.dll
On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native 64-bit system files. SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files used through Windows-on-Windows 64-bit redirection. Do not copy a file from one directory to the other merely because the filename matches. Architecture and servicing build must match.
The file is associated with the Windows WLAN AutoConfig service, whose service name is wlansvc. Microsoft documents WLAN AutoConfig as a Windows service rather than as a separately installed runtime. It is part of Windows 10, Windows 11, and applicable Windows Server installations, although server installations may require the Wireless LAN feature.

Reported messages include:
The program can't start because wlansvcpal.dll is missing from your computer.
The code execution cannot proceed because wlansvcpal.dll was not found.
Error loading wlansvcpal.dll. The specified module could not be found.
Failed to load wlansvcpal.dll.
wlansvcpal.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
The procedure entry point ... could not be located in the dynamic link library wlansvcpal.dll.
The exact wording depends on Windows and the application displaying the error.
Check the file before replacing anything
Confirm the path
- Press Windows key + E.
- Select This PC.
- Open your Windows drive, usually
C:. - Open
Windows, thenSystem32. - Look for
wlansvcpal.dll.
You can also check directly from Command Prompt:
where /r "%windir%System32" wlansvcpal.dll
A result under the Windows component directories is more credible than a copy in a game folder, temporary directory, Downloads folder, or user profile. A file outside those locations is not automatically malware, but investigate its signer, path, creation time, and antivirus history.
Check the digital signature
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Open Digital Signatures.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature associated with Microsoft.
For administrators with the Windows SDK installed, Microsoft’s SignTool can check the file and its catalog signature:
signtool verify /a "%windir%System32wlansvcpal.dll"
Do not trust the filename by itself. Malware can use a familiar Windows filename, while a legitimate file can be flagged incorrectly by security software. The path, signature, and scan result must agree.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates, then repair Windows files
This is the best first repair when the file is missing, corrupt, or present but Windows cannot load it.
Install pending updates
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Test Wi-Fi and the application again.
If Windows Update fails, restart once more and run the Windows Update troubleshooter from Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance. An interrupted update can leave the component store or protected system files incomplete.
Run DISM and SFC
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, which SFC uses as its repair source. That is why the order matters.

If SFC says it repaired corrupted files, restart and test again. If it reports no integrity violations, the issue may involve WLAN AutoConfig, a dependency, a driver, or an application-specific copy. If it cannot repair some files, run DISM again, review the CBS log, and do not repeatedly overwrite the DLL manually.
If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, Microsoft supports using a matching Windows installation source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace the example source only with a real, trustworthy Windows source matching your installed edition and build. Do not use a random ISO or an arbitrary folder.
Running repeated repair commands manually can make it difficult to tell what changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the damaged Windows components and show what needs attention; its repair functions require the full version, and it is not required for this fix.
Fix 2: Start WLAN AutoConfig
A valid DLL does not guarantee that its service is running.
Start the service from Services
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find WLAN AutoConfig.
- Double-click it.
- Set Startup type to Automatic.
- Select Start if the service is stopped.
- Choose Apply, then OK.
- Restart the computer and test a wireless connection.
You can also start it from an elevated Command Prompt:
net start wlansvc
Or from an elevated PowerShell window:
Start-Service -Name wlansvc
If the service refuses to start, record the exact error. A service failure can indicate damaged dependencies, a disabled service configuration, a missing Windows feature on Server, or a wireless driver problem. It does not prove that wlansvcpal.dll alone is defective.
Run the built-in network troubleshooter from Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, then select the relevant network troubleshooter. On older Windows 10 builds, use Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.

For additional information, open an elevated Command Prompt and run:

netsh wlan show drivers
netsh wlan show interfaces
netsh wlan reportissues
These commands show detected wireless hardware, driver details, connection state, and a generated wireless diagnostic report.
Fix 3: Update or reinstall the wireless driver
Use this step when WLAN AutoConfig starts but Wi-Fi is unavailable, the adapter has a warning icon, or the problem began after a driver change.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the wireless adapter.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
If the adapter remains broken:
- Open Device Manager again.
- Right-click the wireless adapter.
- Choose Uninstall device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver package only when you have a known-good replacement or wired/network access.
- Restart.
- Install the current driver from the computer manufacturer or wireless adapter manufacturer’s official support page.
A driver reinstall normally does not recreate a missing protected Windows DLL. Use DISM and SFC for that part.

Antivirus software or a malware-removal tool may have quarantined a genuine system file, or malware may have replaced it.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Choose Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries involving
wlansvcpal.dll. - Check the path and detection details.
Restore a quarantined file only when the path is the expected Windows location, the file has a valid Microsoft signature, and you have confirmed the detection is a false positive. Do not add a broad exclusion merely because the filename looks familiar. Microsoft Defender can detect the file again unless it is explicitly allowed, and allowing a malicious replacement would make the problem worse.
Run Scan options > Full scan. If you suspect unauthorized changes, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan when offered, then repeat the signature and path checks after Windows restarts.

Fix 5: Repair the application that reports the error
If WLAN AutoConfig works and only one old application displays the message, the application may be loading an incorrect private copy or reporting a missing dependency.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data.
- Otherwise uninstall the application.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from the developer’s official installer.
Do not assume that the application truly needs a separately downloadable wlansvcpal.dll. This is a Windows networking component, not a normal Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or game-runtime redistributable.
Fix 6: Use System Restore or a repair reinstall
Use System Restore when the problem began immediately after a driver, update, cleanup utility, or security change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can roll back applications, settings, drivers, and system state changed after the selected point. It does not replace personal documents, but review the affected items before proceeding.

- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the same Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. The option may not appear on every edition, configuration, or recovery state.

regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. wlansvcpal.dll is a Windows WLAN service component, not a routine self-registering COM library.

Running this command:
regsvr32 wlansvcpal.dll
is therefore not a standard repair. It can produce an entry-point error and distract from the actual issue. Use Windows servicing commands, service checks, and driver diagnostics instead.
Why downloading the DLL is unsafe
Do not download wlansvcpal.dll from a random DLL repository and place it in System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder. The file may be:

There is no verified standalone Microsoft wlansvcpal.dll redistributable. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, a Microsoft repair reinstall, or an official application installer where appropriate.
FAQ
Is wlansvcpal.dll malware?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows component. A file with that name is not automatically safe. Verify that it is in the expected Windows location, has a valid Microsoft signature, and is not listed as a threat by Defender.
Does the file belong to Windows 10 or Windows 11?
It is associated with Windows WLAN AutoConfig and can be present in supported Windows client and Server installations. File versions, hashes, sizes, and architectures vary by Windows release and servicing build.
What if the file exists but Windows still says it is missing?
“Specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency is missing or incompatible. Run DISM and SFC, check the WLAN AutoConfig service, inspect the full application or Event Viewer error, and verify that the calling application is not loading a private copy.

Not as a normal fix. A replacement must match the Windows build, edition, architecture, permissions, and servicing state. Windows repair mechanisms are safer.
Does reinstalling the Wi-Fi driver fix it?
Only when the driver or adapter is the actual problem. A driver reinstall does not normally restore a missing protected Windows DLL.
What information should I collect before asking for help?
Record the exact error text, Windows edition and architecture, file path, signature result, DISM result, SFC result, WLAN AutoConfig status, and output from netsh wlan show drivers. This separates a damaged Windows component from a service, driver, dependency, or application problem.
Prevent the error from returning
Keep Windows updates installed, use security software with current definitions, avoid registry and “DLL fixer” utilities, and install wireless drivers only from the computer or adapter manufacturer. If a cleanup or security program quarantines a Windows component, review the path and signature before restoring it. Most importantly, repair the Windows component or service that is actually broken instead of maintaining an untrusted DLL copy.
