Fix 1: Reinstall the correct Canon printer package
This is the most likely solution because the file is associated with Canon printer-driver software.
Before removing anything, note the printer’s name, connection type, port, and any custom print settings. If you have multiple Canon printers, identify the one recently installed, updated, removed, or used when the error began.
Identify the printer and Windows edition
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Review the installed Canon printers and record the exact model name.
- Return to Settings and select System > About.
- Under Windows specifications, note whether you are running Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- Under Device specifications, check System type for 64-bit or 32-bit Windows.
Use the exact model and operating system on Canon’s official support portal. Canon’s driver downloads are selected by product and operating system, so do not choose a package merely because it mentions a similar printer.
Remove the damaged Canon installation
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for Canon.
- Uninstall the Canon printer utility, driver package, or setup program associated with the affected printer.
- Follow Canon’s uninstall prompts if they appear.
- Restart Windows.
If the printer remains listed after uninstalling the application:

- Select the Canon printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Confirm the removal and restart again.
Do not manually delete random DLLs or copy files into System32. A printer driver includes registration data, services, configuration files, dependencies, and sometimes separate 32-bit and 64-bit components.
Install the replacement package
- Open Canon’s official support page in a browser.
- Search for the exact printer model.
- Select your Windows version and architecture when Canon asks for them.
- Download the current driver or complete software package.
- Right-click the downloaded installer and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup instructions.
- Connect or power on the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Print a Windows test page.
To print a test page, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, select the Canon printer, choose Printer properties, open the General tab, and select Print Test Page. On Windows 10, the same controls are under Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
The repair worked if setup completes without the DLL message, the printer appears with the correct model name, and the test page prints. If the installer fails, disconnect the printer, restart Windows, temporarily close other printer utilities, and run the Canon installer again. If the same error appears before setup starts, continue with the caller and quarantine checks below.

Manually finding the right driver among multiple model revisions and Windows packages can be time-consuming, especially when several old drivers are installed. Fix 2: Find a leftover Canon caller
If the printer was removed but the error appears at startup, Windows may still be launching a Canon utility, scheduled task, or service.
First capture the full message. Look for an executable name, folder path, or application title. The filename cnb_0312.dll by itself cannot identify the requesting program.
Check startup applications
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for Canon entries or programs pointing to a missing installation directory.
- Right-click a clearly obsolete Canon entry and select Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Disabling a startup item is safer than deleting it immediately. If the message disappears, uninstall the related Canon application from Settings > Apps.
Check scheduled tasks
- Press the Windows key and type Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks whose name or action refers to Canon.
- Double-click a task and inspect the Actions tab.
- If it points to a removed Canon installation, right-click the task and select Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Do not disable an entry solely because its name is unfamiliar. Confirm its path and relationship to the old Canon installation first.
Check installed printers and drivers
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
printui /s /t2. - Press Enter.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Select an obsolete Canon driver only if no working printer uses it.
- Select Remove.
- Choose Remove driver and driver package when available.
- Restart Windows.
Printer-driver cleanup can remove working printers that share the same package. If you are uncertain, leave the driver installed and reinstall the correct Canon package instead.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Windows Security may have quarantined the DLL. This does not prove that the file was malicious, and it does not prove that restoring it is safe.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for a detection matching the time the error began.
- Expand the entry and inspect the detected path and file details.
- Check whether the file was inside a trusted Canon installation directory.
- Prefer reinstalling the Canon package rather than restoring the individual file.
Restore or allow the file only when its origin, path, and digital signature are verified and the detection is demonstrably false. If the path is temporary, unfamiliar, or unsigned, leave it quarantined and run a full security scan.

Fix 4: Check for a 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch
Public catalogues describe at least one 32-bit build of this Canon component, but those third-party records are not an official Canon compatibility matrix. A 32-bit DLL is loaded by a 32-bit application, even when that application runs on 64-bit Windows.

On 64-bit Windows, Windows uses file-system redirection for many 32-bit applications, including separate handling of System32 and SysWOW64. Placing a file in the wrong location can hide the real installation problem or cause a new architecture error.
Instead:
- Confirm your Windows architecture under Settings > System > About.
- Return to the exact Canon printer support page.
- Select the matching Windows edition and architecture.
- Install the complete driver package.
- Restart and test printing again.
If the message says that the procedure entry point cannot be found, suspect an incompatible or mixed set of Canon files rather than a simple missing-file problem. Remove the damaged package and reinstall it as a complete unit.
Fix 5: Repair a Canon application
Some Canon applications expose a Windows repair option.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the Canon application named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows and test the application or printer.
If Repair is unavailable or does not help, select Reset only if you are prepared to lose that application’s stored settings. Otherwise uninstall the Canon software, restart, and install the current package for the printer.

Use Windows repair commands when unrelated applications also fail, protected Windows files are reporting errors, or the problem began with broader system instability. They are not the primary repair for a missing Canon driver component.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft documents this order because DISM repairs the component source that SFC uses. Restart Windows after both commands complete.

Success means DISM completes without an unrepaired error and SFC reports that it repaired corrupted files or found no integrity violations. If SFC reports that it could not fix some files, restart and run the commands once more. If only Canon printing is broken while Windows otherwise works, return to the Canon driver repair rather than repeatedly running SFC.
Repeatedly researching command output and running SFC/DISM without knowing which component changed can make troubleshooting slow. System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after a driver installation or update and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the Canon change.
- Select Next > Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore changes system files, registry settings, and installed programs, but it does not remove personal documents. Afterward, avoid reinstalling the same incompatible driver package. Download the correct model-specific package instead.
Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. There is no verified evidence that manual registration is required for cnb_0312.dll.
Running this command:
regsvr32 cnb_0312.dll
will not restore a missing Canon driver package. It may produce an error stating that DllRegisterServer was not found, or it may fail because the DLL is not in the current folder. Use regsvr32 only when Canon’s installer documentation specifically requires it for the exact component.
Do not download the DLL separately
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, an unsigned file, the wrong build, the wrong architecture, or a DLL without its required dependencies. Even a genuine copy may fail because Windows still lacks the Canon driver registration and companion files.
Use the Canon support portal and select the exact printer model and Windows version. If the file was quarantined, verify its provenance before considering restoration. Reinstalling the complete package is safer than copying a loose file into System32, SysWOW64, or an application directory.
