Step 1: Record the printer model
Check the label on the printer, its control panel, Windows printer settings, or the existing Canon utility. Do not choose a similar model from Canon’s selector. Printer packages can be model-specific even when the names look nearly identical.

Run the downloaded installer as administrator:
- Open File Explorer.
- Go to Downloads.
- Right-click the Canon installer.
- Select Run as administrator.

Fix 3: Check the Windows architecture and driver match
A 32-bit historical copy of this file has been reported by third-party inventories, but those records do not establish the architecture of every Canon release. Do not select a DLL based on a filename match.
To check Windows architecture:

If the error names a path inside a particular application, repair or reinstall that application too. It may be carrying an outdated Canon component rather than using the current printer installation.

Windows may report that the best driver is already installed even when Canon’s complete package is damaged. If that happens, use Canon’s installer instead.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these tools when the computer has broader symptoms, such as several Windows files failing, update errors, crashes, or damaged system components. They do not replace a missing third-party Canon driver.
First install pending updates:

If SFC reports that it could not repair everything, restart and run it again after DISM completes. If the cnbbr297.dll message remains but Windows itself is otherwise healthy, return to the Canon driver reinstall rather than repeating system repairs indefinitely.

Fix 6: Use System Restore after a known change
If the error began immediately after a driver update, cleanup utility, or software installation, System Restore may undo the change.

- Choose Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can revert system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs without removing personal documents. Programs affected by the rollback may need to be installed again.
Do not use System Restore as a substitute for identifying the Canon printer package. If the restore does not help, install the correct Canon driver afterward.
Why you should not use regsvr32
regsvr32 is intended for registering certain OLE controls and ActiveX DLLs. It is not a general missing-DLL repair command.
There is no verified evidence that cnbbr297.dll exposes the DllRegisterServer entry point required for normal registration. Running a command such as this can therefore produce an “entry point not found” error without repairing the printer:
