pthreadgc2.dll is a third-party application runtime, not a Windows system file. When Windows reports that pthreadgc2.dll is missing, the safest fix is usually to repair or reinstall the particular program that requested it.
Quick identification
| Item | What is known |
|---|---|
| File | pthreadgc2.dll |
| Runtime | GNU C/MinGW build of Pthreads-w32 |
| Role | POSIX-threading runtime for Windows applications |
| Windows component | No |
| Typical owner | The application, game, media tool, or portable program that included it |
| Architectures | x86 and x64 builds exist |
| Correct location | Usually beside the program’s executable |
Pthreads-w32 is an open-source implementation of POSIX threads for Win32. In the project’s naming scheme, G identifies the GNU C build, C identifies its cleanup model, and 2 identifies the ABI generation.
It is not part of Windows, DirectX, the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, .NET, or a graphics driver. There is no single application associated with every copy of this filename.
What the error means
You may see messages such as:
- “This application has failed to start because pthreadGC2.dll was not found.”
- “The program can’t start because pthreadGC2.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Re-installing the application may fix this problem.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “The application was unable to start correctly.”
The first two messages usually mean the named file is absent from the application’s search path. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency required by pthreadGC2.dll is missing.

The requesting program matters more than the filename. Note the application named in the dialog, its shortcut, launcher, executable path, and any program installed or updated immediately before the error appeared.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the application
This is the most likely solution because the application should normally ship with its matching copy of pthreadgc2.dll.
If the program has a repair or verification feature
- Open the program’s launcher.
- Open its settings, library, or game-management screen.
- Look for Verify files, Repair, Scan and repair, or Verify integrity.
- Start the operation and allow it to replace missing files.
- Restart Windows if the launcher requests it.
- Start the affected program again.
A successful repair restores the DLL beside the correct executable and also replaces related files that may have been damaged.
If no repair feature exists
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the software developer or publisher’s official source.
- Install the program again.
- Launch it from its normal shortcut.
Do not uninstall first if the program contains important profiles, saves, recordings, or custom plugins unless those files are backed up.
If reinstalling does not help, the installer may be restoring an incomplete package, or antivirus software may be removing the DLL again. Continue with the checks below.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a legitimate runtime when it is bundled inside an old application or portable program.
Windows Security
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
pthreadgc2.dllor the affected program. - Expand the event and inspect the file path.
- Restore or allow the file only if it came from the application’s official installation and the program itself is trusted.
- Reinstall or repair the application afterward if necessary.
Do not restore a file simply because its name matches the error. If the path points to a temporary folder, an unknown download, or an unofficial DLL archive, remove it and reinstall the application from its legitimate source.
If the file is repeatedly quarantined, update the application first. Older applications may contain outdated or customized runtime builds that trigger security detections.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix 3: Match the application’s architecture
A 64-bit Windows installation can still require the x86 version of pthreadgc2.dll. That happens when the affected application is 32-bit.
Windows architecture and application architecture are separate:
- A 32-bit application requires the x86 DLL.
- A 64-bit application requires the x64 DLL.
- An x64 DLL is not a replacement for an x86 DLL.
To check a running application:
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading and select Select columns.
- Enable Platform, if available.
- Check the application’s entry.
You can also inspect the program’s documentation or installation folder. If you built the software yourself, check the compiler target and the libraries linked into the executable.
If you own or maintain the application, obtain Pthreads-w32 from its official project archive or from the application’s official release package. Select the build matching the executable and place it beside that executable, not in a Windows system directory. The official project provides x86 and x64 packages and publishes checksum information for its archive.
Older applications may require a compatible older build or ABI generation. In that situation, the application’s own release package is safer than substituting the newest standalone file.

Fix 4: Restore the complete application bundle
A DLL can be present while the application still fails because another required file is missing.
This is especially relevant when the message says:
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located.”
- “The application was unable to start.”
- “The file is not designed to run on Windows.”
Check the application folder for recently removed or renamed files. Do not copy random DLLs into it one at a time. Use the launcher’s verification function or reinstall the complete application so that all sibling libraries are restored together.
Portable applications deserve special attention. Re-extract the entire archive into a new folder instead of copying only pthreadgc2.dll from another installation.

If the file exists but the error remains, confirm that Windows is loading the copy beside the intended executable rather than a different copy found through PATH. A dependency-analysis utility from a trusted development environment can identify missing imports, architecture mismatches, and unresolved entry points.
Fix 5: Install only runtimes the application actually requests
Installing unrelated runtime packages will not normally provide pthreadgc2.dll.
- DirectX does not generally install this file.
- The Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable does not provide it.
- .NET does not provide it.
- A graphics driver does not provide it.
If the same application separately reports a missing VCRUNTIME or MSVCP file, install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable package required by that application. Use the x86 package for a 32-bit program and x64 for a 64-bit program when applicable.

- Select Apps.
- Select Optional features.
- Choose More Windows features.
- Enable only the feature named by the application’s documentation.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
Do not enable Windows features as a substitute for restoring pthreadgc2.dll.
Fix 6: Update or reinstall a related driver only when evidence points there
A driver is not the normal owner of pthreadgc2.dll, but a recent driver or system change can expose an application-specific problem. Update drivers only when the affected program’s documentation or error history identifies a graphics, audio, capture, or other device dependency.
Using Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters or Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application.
For a clean reinstall, right-click the device, select Uninstall device, restart Windows, and then install the driver supplied by the hardware manufacturer. Do not remove a device unless you know which driver it uses and have a recovery path.
Manually hunting through hardware models and driver releases can be tedious, especially when several devices appear stale. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when that application owns pthreadgc2.dll.

Because pthreadgc2.dll is not a Windows system DLL, SFC and DISM should not be your first fix. Use them when Windows has several unrelated corruption symptoms, system tools fail, or built-in applications are also damaged.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows files. Neither command downloads a third-party Pthreads runtime.
Repeatedly running system scans while guessing which application file is missing is inefficient. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies problems, while repair is performed by the full version. For a pthreadgc2.dll error, repairing or reinstalling the owning application remains the definitive fix.
Fix 8: Use System Restore for a clearly timed system change
If the error began immediately after a driver installation, application installation, or major configuration change, System Restore may reverse that change.

What not to do
Do not download the DLL from random websites
Untrusted DLL download pages can provide malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible build, or a tampered file. Even a genuine file may not fix the missing dependency that caused the error.
Use the affected application’s official installer first. For software you compile or maintain, use the official Pthreads-w32 archive or the project’s supplied dependency package, then verify published checksums where available.
Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
Windows normally searches the application directory early in its DLL search process. Copying an application runtime into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 can create version conflicts and cause unrelated programs to load the wrong library.
Keep the matching DLL with the executable that requires it.
Do not run regsvr32 on it
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM or ActiveX components. pthreadgc2.dll is a runtime library, not a registration-based component.
Running this command is therefore not a general repair:
regsvr32 pthreadgc2.dll
If a separate COM component explicitly requires registration, follow that component’s vendor instructions and use the correct 32-bit or 64-bit regsvr32 tool. That does not apply to pthreadgc2.dll.
FAQ
Is pthreadgc2.dll a Windows file?
No. It belongs to the Pthreads-w32 runtime used by particular third-party applications.
Why does a 64-bit PC need an x86 DLL?
The program may be 32-bit even though Windows is 64-bit. Match the DLL to the application, not merely to Windows.
Can DirectX or Visual C++ install it?
Normally, no. Those are different runtimes. Repair the program that reports the error.
The file exists. Why does the error continue?
It may be the wrong architecture, corrupted, incompatible with the application’s build, or dependent on another missing DLL. Restore the complete application bundle and check its dependencies.
Recommended Free Tools
Is manual replacement ever appropriate?
Yes, for a developer, confirmed portable application, or known application bundle using the exact trusted build and architecture. Place it beside the correct executable.
What information should I collect if nothing works?
Record the exact error wording, executable path, application version, Windows architecture, antivirus history, recent updates, and whether the file exists beside the executable. That information identifies the real owning program and distinguishes a missing file from a dependency or architecture problem.
