What storagewmi.dll does
The file is described as WMI Provider for Storage Management. It supports the Windows Storage Management API, allowing WMI and PowerShell to work with disks, partitions, volumes, storage pools, virtual disks, and related resources.
Microsoft introduced this storage-management API with Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012. The provider is associated with the WMI namespace RootMicrosoftWindowsStorage and the Storagewmi.mof management definition.
The process showing the error may be:
- A Windows storage component
- PowerShell or a WMI-based management task
- A disk, backup, partition, or storage utility
- An installer or maintenance program
- An application that triggered a Windows storage operation
That application may only be the process that exposed the problem. It does not necessarily own or ship storagewmi.dll.

Location and version identification
On 64-bit Windows, the normal locations are:

Windows also keeps protected copies in its component store and servicing directories. Therefore, the absence of a visible file in one folder does not tell you whether Windows has a usable repair copy.
Historical Microsoft records show both 32-bit and 64-bit builds across Windows branches. The exact current version depends on your Windows edition, architecture, cumulative updates, and servicing state. Do not select a DLL from a public file catalogue based on its version number.
To inspect a file that is already present:
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to
C:WindowsSystem32orC:WindowsSysWOW64. - Right-click
storagewmi.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open Details to review the description and file version.
- Open Digital Signatures and check that the signer is Microsoft.
Do not treat a matching filename as proof of authenticity. A copy in a Downloads folder, temporary folder, or unexpected application directory deserves additional scrutiny.
First, record the complete error
Before changing anything, note:
- The exact error wording
- The executable or application named in the message
- The path shown for
storagewmi.dll, if any - Your Windows edition and build
- Whether the problem began after an update, cleanup, shutdown, or antivirus action
- Whether the file exists in
System32orSysWOW64 - Whether its digital signature is valid
Common messages include:
- “The program can’t start because storagewmi.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because storagewmi.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading storagewmi.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “storagewmi.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that storagewmi.dll itself is absent. A dependency may be missing, incompatible, or blocked.
Fix 1: Complete Windows Update
A failed or incomplete Windows servicing operation is a common reason for protected system components to become mismatched.
Windows 11
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart when asked.
- Return to Windows Update and check again until no further updates are offered.
- Retry the program that displayed the error.
Windows 10
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Open Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install available updates and restart.
- Test the affected program again.
If the error started immediately after a particular update, open the update history. On supported systems, you can remove a recent update through Settings → Windows Update → Update history → Uninstall updates. Remove an update only when the timing clearly connects it to the failure, and restart afterward.
On Windows 11, you may also see Fix problems using Windows Update under Settings → System → Recovery. Select Reinstall now if it is available. This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving personal files, installed applications, and settings, subject to Microsoft’s availability requirements.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the most important repair sequence for a missing or damaged storagewmi.dll.

- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. It can remain at one percentage for several minutes.
- When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application or Windows operation again.
DISM repairs the Windows component source that SFC uses, which is why DISM should come first.
If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, restart and test again. If it reports that it could not repair some files, repeat the sequence once after confirming that Windows Update is working.
If DISM says that source files could not be found, Microsoft documents using a matching installation source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace the example path with a genuine Windows repair source matching your installed edition, language, and architecture. Do not use a random downloaded DLL as the source.

If DISM and SFC repeatedly fail, continue to the recovery steps below instead of copying a DLL into a system folder.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a protected file after a false positive or after removing malware.
- Open Start.
- Type
Windows Security. - Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Review recent actions for
storagewmi.dllor a related Windows component. - Open an entry to review its location, detection name, and action.
Restore a quarantined file only when all of the following are trustworthy:
- The file was in a normal Windows location
- Its digital signature identifies Microsoft
- The detection appears to be a false positive
- A current Defender scan does not indicate an active infection
Microsoft warns that restoring an item can cause Defender to detect it again unless it is explicitly allowed. If the file was in an unexpected directory, the system has other malware symptoms, or the signature is invalid, do not restore it. Update Defender and run a full scan. If necessary, use an offline scan or Windows recovery media.

Fix 4: Repair the application that exposes the error
If one backup utility, storage manager, installer, or game reports the message while Windows itself works normally, repair that program after completing DISM and SFC.
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options, Modify, or Repair if available.
- Restart Windows and test it.
For a game or launcher, use its built-in Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity function. If no repair option exists:
- Uninstall the affected program.
- Restart Windows.
- Download its installer only from the developer or publisher’s official source.
- Install it again.
- Run its first launch with the normal user account unless its documentation specifically requires elevation.
Reinstalling the application is appropriate when its own files are damaged. It is not a reason to copy storagewmi.dll into the application folder. Windows should service this provider through its own protected component packages.
Fix 5: Check architecture and dependencies
A 32-bit application running on 64-bit Windows may use the compatibility copy under SysWOW64, while a 64-bit process normally uses System32. These names are counterintuitive, but the folders serve different process architectures.
A message about storagewmi.dll can result from:
- A 32-bit process attempting to load an incompatible 64-bit copy
- A 64-bit process being given a 32-bit copy
- A DLL copied from another Windows release
- A missing dependency
- A damaged Windows component registration or provider definition
Do not automatically install Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET. No evidence in this error identifies those packages as the source of storagewmi.dll.
If a particular storage utility or hardware-management program is involved, check its current official update. If the problem began after a storage driver change, continue with Device Manager.
Fix 6: Update a related storage driver
A driver problem can expose storage-management errors even when the DLL itself is intact.

- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Disk drives, Storage controllers, and System devices.
- Right-click the device related to the failure.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and record the provider and date.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
For storage hardware, obtain drivers from the computer, motherboard, or storage-device manufacturer. Do not use a driver intended for a different model or architecture.

Manually checking several hardware categories and matching driver packages can be slow and easy to get wrong. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs updating; driver installation through its full version is optional and is not a substitute for the manufacturer’s official package.
If the issue began after a driver update, open the device’s Properties → Driver tab and use Roll Back Driver when that button is available.

Create a restore point. - Open the matching result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Confirm the restore and restart Windows.
System Restore rolls back system files and settings but does not normally remove personal files.
If System Restore is unavailable or ineffective, use the Windows 11 Reinstall now recovery option described above. An in-place repair from matching Windows installation media is another option when normal component repair cannot restore the provider. Back up important files first and choose the option that preserves applications and personal data when offered.
What not to do
Do not download storagewmi.dll from random DLL sites
A downloaded copy can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, belong to another Windows build, or fail because a dependency is the real problem. It can also create DLL search-order and servicing conflicts.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, Windows recovery, or the official installer for the affected application instead.
Do not copy it into System32, SysWOW64, or an app folder
Manually replacing a protected Windows file can produce version mismatches and make later servicing harder. A file that works in one application folder may still be wrong for the Windows component that needs it.
Do not run regsvr32 as a generic repair
regsvr32 is used to register DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general command for restoring missing or corrupted Windows files. Running:

regsvr32 storagewmi.dll
will not repair component-store damage and may simply produce another error.
Do not change Windows Features at random
Storage management is integrated with Windows and WMI. Turning unrelated Windows Features on and off is unlikely to restore this provider and can introduce new configuration problems.

FAQ
Is storagewmi.dll malware?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows component. Malware can use the same filename, so verify its Windows location and Microsoft digital signature rather than trusting the name alone.
Is storagewmi.dll part of Storage Spaces?
It supports the Windows Storage Management API used to manage storage resources, including storage pools and virtual disks. A Storage Spaces operation may therefore expose a problem with the provider, but the file is still a Windows component.
Why does a game or installer mention it?
The program may be the process that triggered a Windows storage or WMI operation. That does not prove the game or installer should contain its own copy.
Should I install Visual C++ or .NET?
Not automatically. Those packages are not established as the source of this Windows provider. Repair Windows first, then investigate a specific application’s documented dependencies.

Do not copy it there. Repair the application and Windows, then check whether the application is incorrectly expecting a private DLL.
What information should I provide when asking for help?
Include the full error text, executable name and path, Windows edition and build, reported DLL path, signature status, and the final DISM and SFC results. Also mention whether the issue followed an update, antivirus action, cleanup program, shutdown, or driver change.
