keyiso.dll Missing: Repair the Windows Key Isolation Component

Length9 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

keyiso.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system DLL used by the CNG Key Isolation service. If keyiso.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, repair Windows first rather than downloading a replacement.

Item Verified identification
File keyiso.dll
Windows service CNG Key Isolation, service name KeyIso
Component Windows CNG cryptography infrastructure
Normal location %SystemRoot%System32keyiso.dll
Service host LSA process, lsass.exe
Publisher Microsoft Windows
Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET file No
Standalone redistributable No verified Microsoft installer

What keyiso.dll does

CNG, or Cryptography API: Next Generation, provides Windows cryptographic services. The KeyIso service isolates private keys and cryptographic operations inside the LSA process instead of leaving long-lived private keys exposed to ordinary applications. Microsoft documents the service as a Windows-installed component hosted by LSA. Microsoft’s CNG service guidance

The normal service configuration points to:

%SystemRoot%System32keyiso.dll

CNG has been part of Windows since Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. It is not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX component, .NET assembly, graphics driver, or game runtime. Microsoft’s CNG overview

What the error means

You may see messages such as:

The program can't start because keyiso.dll is missing from your computer.
The code execution cannot proceed because keyiso.dll was not found.
There was a problem starting keyiso.dll.
The specified module could not be found.
keyiso.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.

These are generic Windows loader messages. They do not prove that keyiso.dll itself is the damaged file. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency could not load. Windows may also load an incorrect application-local DLL before checking the normal system location, depending on the DLL search rules. Microsoft’s DLL search order documentation

Fix 1: Install updates, then run DISM and SFC

This is the correct first repair for a missing or damaged Windows copy.

1. Install pending Windows updates

On Windows 11:

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Click Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart the PC, even if Windows does not immediately require it.

On Windows 10:

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Update & Security.
  3. Open Windows Update.
  4. Click Check for updates.
  5. Install the updates and restart.

If Windows Update reports an error, run the built-in troubleshooter before continuing. On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, find Windows Update, and select Run. Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter

2. Repair the component store with DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
  4. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window while it is running.

A successful result normally reports that the restore operation completed successfully. Restart Windows if DISM requests it.

3. Repair protected files with SFC

In the same elevated Command Prompt, run:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then interpret the result:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows did not find damaged protected files. Continue with the diagnostic checks below if the error remains.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test the application or Windows function again.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, restart, and run SFC a second time.
  • SFC cannot perform the requested operation: Restart into Safe Mode and repeat the scan, or use Windows recovery options.

Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC because DISM repairs the component store that SFC uses as a source. Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions

Repeating SFC without knowing whether the component store is healthy can turn troubleshooting into guesswork. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying Windows repair issues and show what needs attention; its repair functions require the full version, but it is not required, and DISM followed by SFC remains the Microsoft-supported path.

Fix 2: Check whether security software quarantined the file

Antivirus cleanup, malware removal, or an aggressive security product can remove or quarantine a Windows component.

In Windows Security:

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Privacy & security on Windows 11, or Update & Security on Windows 10.
  3. Open Windows Security.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Click Protection history.
  6. Review recent detections for keyiso.dll or a related system-file event.

Do not click Restore automatically. First confirm that:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • the reported path is the expected Windows system location;
  • the file is identified as a Microsoft Windows component;
  • the detection is a known false positive;
  • the computer has been scanned for malware.

If the detection was genuine, restoring the file can expose the system again. Run an up-to-date Microsoft Defender scan, then repair Windows with DISM and SFC instead. Microsoft explains the risks of restoring quarantined items in its Protection History guidance.

If a suspicious copy exists outside the Windows system directory, do not replace the system copy with it. Record its path and investigate it as a possible unauthorized or malicious file.

Fix 3: Repair the application that shows the message

If the error appears only when starting one program, the application may be calling Windows cryptography incorrectly, using an application-local copy, or reporting a missing dependency as keyiso.dll.

Use this sequence:

  1. Close the affected program.
  2. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
  3. Select the application.
  4. Choose Advanced options if available.
  5. Select Repair.
  6. Restart the application and test it.

If there is no repair option:

  1. Download a current installer from the application developer’s official source.
  2. Uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Install the current version.
  5. Test it before adding optional plug-ins or modifications.

If the program has a launcher with Verify, Repair, or Scan files, run that function. Do not assume that the application installer should supply keyiso.dll; it is a Windows component.

  • MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE

If the error started immediately after installing or removing an application, undo that change first. A broken installer can leave behind an incorrect application-local DLL or a damaged application dependency.

Fix 4: Check architecture and the real missing dependency

A 32-bit application running on 64-bit Windows uses a different application and system search context from a native 64-bit program. That does not mean you should download a second copy of keyiso.dll or promise that a particular SysWOW64 copy is correct.

Check the application architecture from its official documentation or installer. Then:

  1. Confirm whether the message occurs in only the 32-bit or 64-bit version of the program.
  2. Remove any suspicious keyiso.dll located in the program’s installation directory only after confirming that it is not an application-owned file required by the vendor.
  3. Run DISM and SFC again.
  4. Repair or reinstall the affected application.

A file can exist at the expected path while the loader still reports “module not found” because another dependency is absent or incompatible. A diagnostic tool capable of showing the application’s dependency chain can help, but do not replace files based only on a filename.

If the message says the file is “not designed to run on Windows,” the likely causes include corruption, a wrong-architecture replacement, or a damaged dependency. It is not a reason to run regsvr32.

Fix 5: Update drivers only when the application points to a driver problem

keyiso.dll is not a graphics or hardware driver. Device Manager is relevant only if the affected program also reports a device, smart-card, certificate-token, storage, or security-driver failure.

To check drivers:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category related to the reported device.
  4. Right-click the device and choose Properties.
  5. Open the Driver tab.
  6. Note the provider and driver date.
  7. Use Update Driver > Search automatically for drivers, or obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer.

Do not uninstall a working device merely because a keyiso.dll message appears. Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the work of hunting through many driver versions by showing outdated drivers; its driver installation requires the full version, and it is optional because the hardware manufacturer and Windows Update remain the preferred sources.

Fix 6: Recover from an update or failed upgrade

If the problem began immediately after a Windows update, upgrade, rollback, or system cleanup:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter.
  2. Install any newer pending update.
  3. Restart and test again.
  4. If the timing clearly matches a recent update, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history.
  5. Select Uninstall updates.
  6. Remove only the recent update associated with the failure.
  7. Restart and test.

Do not remove multiple updates at once, because that makes the cause harder to identify. Microsoft’s update-removal instructions

On supported Windows 11 installations, you may also have this repair option:

  1. Open Settings > System > Recovery.
  2. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
  3. Select Reinstall now.
  4. Follow the prompts.

This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. Availability depends on the Windows edition, installed updates, and management policies. Microsoft’s repair-reinstall guidance

Fix 7: Use System Restore or reinstall Windows

Use System Restore when:

  • DISM and SFC cannot repair the component;
  • the failure began after a known system change;
  • a suitable restore point exists;
  • the problem affects Windows or several applications.

Open Start, search for Create a restore point, open it, select System Restore, and choose a restore point from before the failure.

What not to do

Do not download keyiso.dll from a random DLL site

An unofficial download can contain malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible build, or a modified file. It may also hide the actual cause, such as a damaged component store or missing dependency.

There is no verified official standalone Microsoft keyiso.dll installer or redistributable. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Windows recovery, or the official installer for the affected application.

Do not copy the file into the application folder

An application-local copy can be loaded before the Windows copy and may be malicious or incompatible. Copying a DLL from another PC is also unsafe unless the Windows edition and build match and the replacement is part of a controlled, advanced repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not register it with regsvr32

regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. keyiso.dll is a Windows service module, not a conventional COM or ActiveX component. Running:

regsvr32 keyiso.dll

is not a general repair and may produce an entry-point error. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation

FAQ

Is keyiso.dll safe?

The Windows copy in %SystemRoot%System32 is a genuine Microsoft system component. Verify its path and digital signature rather than trusting a filename alone.

Is keyiso.dll part of Visual C++ or DirectX?

No. It belongs to Windows CNG and the KeyIso service. Installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not the normal fix.

Why does the error name keyiso.dll when the file exists?

The loader may be unable to load a dependency, or an application-local DLL may be interfering. The message does not prove that the named file is missing.

Should I restore it from antivirus quarantine?

Not automatically. Validate the path, signature, detection, and system health first. Scan for malware and prefer DISM and SFC when the Windows copy is missing.

Will reinstalling the affected application fix it?

It can fix an application-specific dependency or incorrect application-local file, but it will not repair a damaged Windows component. Repair Windows first when multiple programs or Windows features show the error.

Does Windows need a separate 32-bit keyiso.dll?

Do not assume that. Architecture affects diagnosis, but the correct repair depends on the Windows build, application architecture, and dependency chain. Do not download or copy an unverified second DLL.
