There is no single version or file size that applies to every Windows installation. Windows services MSXML components through updates, so the correct version depends on the Windows release, architecture, language, and update level.

Match the symptom to the likely cause

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the affected application

If only one application reports msxml3r.dll, this is the safest and most likely fix. The application may have lost a private dependency, manifest, language resource, or expected MSXML component even though Windows itself is healthy.

Use Windows app repair

6. Check the file path, detection name, publisher, and action taken.

If the error is 0xc000007b or says the file is not designed to run on Windows, suspect corruption or an architecture mismatch rather than simple absence. Repair the application first, then run DISM and SFC. Remove any DLL that was manually copied from another computer or download site before testing again.

Fix 6: Reinstall the application’s required MSXML version

The application name matters. An older program may require MSXML 3.0, MSXML 4.0, or another dependency. MSXML 4.0 is a separate legacy version and is not automatically replaced by installing MSXML 6.0.

Check the application’s official documentation or support installer for its required runtime. If it specifically requires an older MSXML version, use only the publisher’s supported installer or a Microsoft package documented for that application and Windows release. Do not install several unrelated XML packages at random.

For an application that was designed for MSXML 4.0, installing MSXML 6.0 may not satisfy a hard-coded dependency. Reinstalling or updating the application may be the correct long-term solution.

Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent system change

System Restore can help when the error started immediately after a driver installation, cleanup utility, update, or other system change and a suitable restore point exists.

2. Enter:
