Which fix applies to you
Use the matching path below before copying files or running repair commands:
- The error says
comctl.dlland names one older application: repair or reinstall that application. The DLL normally belongs beside the program that installed it. - The error says
comctl32.dll: treat it as a Windows component and use Windows Update, DISM, and System File Checker. - The file was removed after antivirus detected it: inspect quarantine and verify the application’s installer before restoring anything.
- The error says “not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error”: suspect corruption, incompatibility, or the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit binary.
- The message appears during startup without naming an application: inspect Startup Apps, Task Scheduler, and remnants of uninstalled software.
- Only one old program fails: focus on that program’s installation. Do not replace a Windows system file.
- Several Windows applications fail with
comctl32.dll: investigate Windows component corruption instead of reinstalling unrelated applications.
The exact filename changes the repair path. Comctl32.dll is Microsoft’s Windows Common Controls library, used for controls such as list views, toolbars, tabs, and progress bars. comctl.dll is a separate, ambiguous application DLL and is not the normal Windows Common Controls file. Microsoft’s Common Controls documentation describes the Windows component as Comctl32.dll.
First, identify what is asking for comctl.dll
Do not start by downloading a replacement. Capture the complete error and identify the executable that produced it.

Check the error and application path
- Write down the full message, including the program name if shown.
- If the dialog has an OK button only, open the program again and note what appears immediately before the error.
- Right-click the application’s shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, read the Target path.
- Open that folder in File Explorer.
- Look for
comctl.dllbeside the application’s executable or in one of its subfolders. - In Settings, open Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for the application named in the error.
A copy located inside an application’s installation directory is more likely to be an application dependency than a Windows component. Location alone does not prove that a file is safe, so inspect its properties and scan it before using it.
Inspect the file’s details and signature
If you find the file:
- Right-click
comctl.dlland select Properties. - Open the Details tab.
- Record the File description, Company, Product name, and File version if they are present.
- Open Digital Signatures.
- Select a signature, click Details, and check whether Windows reports that the signature is valid.
- Scan the file with Microsoft Defender or your organization’s security software.
The file’s publisher, version, size, and architecture cannot be generalized for comctl.dll. Different applications can ship files with the same filename.
You can also locate copies from an elevated PowerShell window without changing anything:
Get-ChildItem -Path C: -Filter comctl.dll -File -Recurse -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
This can take a long time on a large drive. It is a locating command, not a substitute for a security scan.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the application that needs it
For an exact comctl.dll error, this is the safest and most likely fix.
Use the application’s repair option
- Close the affected program.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair and wait for Windows to finish.
- Start the application again.
On Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Apps & features, select the application, and choose Advanced options when available.
If there is no repair option:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify, depending on what the installer provides.
- Accept the repair and restart Windows if requested.
A successful repair normally lets the application start without the missing-file message. If the same error remains, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and reinstall it using its original installer or the application’s official vendor source. Do not preserve a damaged installation folder unless the vendor specifically requires it.
For a game, use its launcher instead of manually replacing the file. Look for Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of game files, then allow the launcher to restore the files it expects.

Check whether the application is 32-bit
Many older Windows applications are 32-bit even when Windows is 64-bit. A 32-bit program may require a 32-bit copy of its private dependency. Installing a different architecture can produce a bad-image or entry-point error rather than fixing the missing file.
Use the application’s matching installer and keep its DLL in the directory intended by that application. Do not copy a 64-bit DLL into a 32-bit program folder, or the reverse.
If the program is old, install only the prerequisites documented by its vendor and try Windows compatibility settings as a secondary measure:
- Right-click the application’s executable or shortcut.
- Select Properties > Compatibility.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose the Windows version recommended by the application’s documentation.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Test the program.
Compatibility mode does not supply a missing DLL. It only helps when the program’s behavior is incompatible with the current Windows version.

Known application associations
The filename does not identify one universal developer. Public software inventory data associates one copy with VB Decompiler Pro, where it is described as a Windows CommonControls objects server and attributed to “Hell.” That attribution should not be treated as proof that every comctl.dll belongs to that product.
FAST ComTec documentation also describes COMCTL.DLL as part of optional MCDLAN software used for remote control of measurement systems. If the error comes from FAST ComTec or MCDWIN software, reinstall the matching MCDLAN or MCDWIN package rather than taking a DLL from another program.
For either product:
- Confirm the program name from the error path or installed-program list.
- Locate the original installer or approved installation media.
- Run its repair option, if available.
- If repair is unavailable, reinstall the matching product.
- Confirm that the program’s own folder contains the required file afterward.
- Contact the vendor if the installer does not restore it.
The application association is useful for choosing the installer, but it is not a reason to substitute a file from an unrelated copy.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything
Security software may remove or quarantine an application DLL after an update or scan.

- 14" diagonal, 1366x768 resolution, HD BrightView LED, Glossy NON-TOUCH Display
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the affected application or
comctl.dll. - Expand the event and review the detected file path.
- If the file came from the legitimate application’s original installation, verify the installer and vendor before choosing Restore.
- If you cannot confirm its provenance, leave it quarantined and reinstall the application from clean, official media.
- Run a full scan after reinstalling.
Do not permanently disable antivirus protection to make an old application start. A missing file can indicate unwanted software as easily as an incomplete installation.
If the file is in an unusual temporary folder, a user profile download folder, or a location unrelated to the affected program, quarantine it and run Microsoft Defender Offline or another trusted offline scan.
Fix 3: Repair Windows only when the name is comctl32.dll
If the error actually says comctl32.dll, use Windows repair tools. Microsoft documents Comctl32.dll as an operating-system component, with side-by-side versions selected by application manifests. Microsoft’s Common Control Versions documentation explains that behavior.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start and type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component source, while SFC checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies. Microsoft’s SFC and DISM instructions
If Windows Update cannot provide the repair source, an administrator can use a matching Windows repair source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace the example path only with a legitimate source matching the installed Windows edition and build.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow and confusing. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan finds, while repair features are handled by the full version; it is optional, and an application-owned comctl.dll still requires reinstalling the parent program.
If DISM and SFC cannot repair Windows, use Windows recovery options or an in-place repair installation. If Windows will not boot normally, Microsoft’s Startup Repair guidance provides the appropriate recovery path.
Fix 4: Update a related driver only when the application depends on hardware
A driver is not the default cause of an exact comctl.dll missing error. Consider this path only when the failing application controls measurement, capture, printing, or another device and its vendor identifies a driver dependency.

- Select Update Driver > Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
- If the device has a warning icon, uninstall the device from Device Manager, restart, and install the matching driver supplied by the hardware vendor.
Do not remove an unknown device or install a random driver merely because comctl.dll is missing.
Manually checking several device categories and matching each driver to the hardware can be tedious. Outbyte Driver Updater can use its free scan to show stale drivers, while driver installation is handled by the full version; the application’s official reinstall remains the definitive fix for an application-owned DLL.

regsvr32 registers a DLL that exposes a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer; it is not a general missing-DLL repair command. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation describes its registration purpose and syntax.
Recommended Free Tools
Running this against an ordinary helper or runtime DLL may produce:
DllRegisterServer was not found
Do not run:
regsvr32 comctl.dll
unless the application’s vendor specifically says that this particular DLL is self-registering and provides the correct 32-bit or 64-bit command. Registration cannot restore a deleted file, repair a corrupt binary, or supply its dependencies.
Do not download a generic comctl.dll
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong version, or the wrong architecture. Copying an arbitrary file into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder can create version conflicts and conceal the real installation problem.
System32 contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. That distinction does not make an arbitrary comctl.dll a Windows file or justify placing it in either directory.

If the error appears at startup
When no visible program is named:
- Open Settings > Apps > Startup and disable the entry associated with the removed or failing application.
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. - Select Startup apps and inspect suspicious entries.
- Open Task Scheduler and review tasks left by recently removed software.
- Check installed applications for incomplete uninstallations.
- Scan the machine if the DLL is outside a known application folder.
- Reinstall the parent application only after identifying it.
If the error continues after the application is removed, the startup entry or scheduled task may be calling an obsolete executable.

FAQ
Is comctl.dll a Windows system file?
No. Windows includes Comctl32.dll, not the generic lowercase filename comctl.dll as its normal Common Controls library. An exact comctl.dll error usually points to a third-party or legacy application.
Is “Hell” the developer of every comctl.dll?
No. That name appears in public inventory data for one VB Decompiler Pro file. It does not identify every copy or establish a universal developer.
Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET?
There is no evidence that one of those packages is the default fix for the exact filename comctl.dll. Install prerequisites only when the affected application’s documentation requires them.
Can I copy comctl.dll from another computer?
No. The other file may belong to a different product, version, architecture, or security context. Repair the application that requested it.
What if the message says “not designed to run on Windows”?
Treat that as a likely corrupt, incompatible, or wrong-architecture binary. Reinstall the matching application version and check antivirus quarantine rather than registering the DLL.
What should I do if only one old program fails?
Identify the program, check its installation folder, and repair or reinstall it from its official installer. That pattern points to the application’s files rather than Windows corruption.
What if every program reports comctl32.dll?
Run Windows Update, then DISM followed by SFC. If those tools cannot repair the component store, use Windows recovery or an in-place repair installation.
