Which fix applies to you
Use the description that best matches your situation:
- The error started after an Office update, repair, uninstall, or cleanup: run Microsoft 365 or Office Online Repair.
- You migrated from Groove, SharePoint Workspace, or SkyDrive Pro to modern OneDrive: determine whether the legacy component is still required before removing it.
- The file is present but Windows reports “module was not found”: check dependencies, architecture, and mixed Office installations.
- Windows Security recently detected or removed the file: inspect Protection history before restoring anything.
- The problem affects several Windows components, not just Office: run DISM followed by System File Checker.
- The error appears in File Explorer or an Adobe file picker: an old Office shell extension may be loading the file.
- Your organization uses older SharePoint Server: do not remove Groove until your administrator confirms it is no longer needed.
Do not begin by downloading grooveex.dll from a DLL archive. The correct repair depends on the Office or legacy sync installation that owns the file.
What is grooveex.dll?
grooveex.dll is a legitimate Microsoft DLL associated with the former Microsoft Office Groove and SharePoint Workspace software and the older OneDrive for Business sync client. Microsoft describes it as an application extension for OneDrive for Business, used with Groove.exe, not the current OneDrive.exe client. It is not a normal Windows system DLL. It normally belongs inside an Office installation directory rather than C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Documented Office copies are Microsoft-signed, but any individual copy should be checked by its path, signature, and installation source.
The file may appear under descriptions associated with:
- Microsoft OneDrive for Business Extensions
- Microsoft SharePoint Workspace Extensions
- Microsoft SkyDrive Pro Extensions
The names refer to different generations of Microsoft’s synchronization software. Groove and SharePoint Workspace are legacy products. Modern OneDrive uses OneDrive.exe and does not normally require grooveex.dll.
Both 32-bit and 64-bit copies exist. The correct choice follows the architecture of the Office application or legacy sync executable, not simply whether Windows is 64-bit. Historical Office updates included separate x86 and x64 files, and versions, sizes, paths, and languages vary by Office generation and update level.

Before changing files, record three details:
- The complete error text, such as “GROOVEEX.DLL was not found,” “cannot be loaded,” or “the application was unable to start correctly.”
- The program displaying the error.
- The full path of the executable or DLL, if Windows provides it.
A “module was not found” message does not always mean grooveex.dll itself is absent. The file may be present while a dependent Office component is missing, the wrong architecture is installed, or a mixed Office installation is confusing the loader.
Also consider what changed immediately before the failure:
- Office was updated, removed, or repaired.
- A disk-cleanup utility removed an Office folder.
- Antivirus software quarantined the file.
- Groove or SharePoint Workspace was replaced with OneDrive.
- Two Office versions or architectures were installed together.
- The problem occurs only in Explorer or an application’s Open dialog.
Fix 1: Repair Microsoft Office online
This is the safest first repair when the error involves Office, Microsoft 365, OneDrive for Business, SharePoint Workspace, or an Office-related shell extension.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find Microsoft 365, Microsoft Office, or the Office installation named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Modify.
- Approve the administrator prompt.
- Select Online Repair.
- Select Repair and allow the process to finish.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft states that Online Repair replaces and repairs the complete Office installation. Quick Repair is faster but less comprehensive, so use it only when Online Repair is unavailable or you want a preliminary repair. Test the same program that originally displayed the error. If it starts normally and the error does not return after a restart, the repair restored the missing component.
If repair fails, check whether more than one Office version is installed. Remove obsolete or conflicting Office installations through Settings > Apps > Installed apps, then repair the Office version that your organization actually uses. Do not remove a business-managed installation without confirming the approved deployment source.
Fix 2: Decide whether legacy Groove is still needed
Microsoft ended support for Groove synchronization in Microsoft 365, but some older SharePoint Server environments can still require the legacy client. This is especially important on business computers that connect to older SharePoint Server installations.
Ask your administrator or check the sync configuration:

- Is
Groove.exestill present and used? - Does the organization still deploy SharePoint Workspace or the previous OneDrive for Business sync client?
- Has the computer already migrated to modern
OneDrive.exe?
If legacy Groove is still required, repair or reinstall the matching Office or approved SharePoint component from your organization’s official deployment source. Do not substitute a loose DLL.
If the organization has fully migrated to modern OneDrive, remove the obsolete component through the approved Office deployment process rather than trying to preserve grooveex.dll. Microsoft’s Office Deployment Tool recognizes this exclusion:
<ExcludeApp ID="Groove" />
The Groove identifier refers to the older OneDrive component. Review Microsoft’s Office Deployment Tool configuration options before changing a managed deployment.
Microsoft’s legacy sync transition guidance explains the migration considerations. For older SharePoint Server environments, review the guidance on installing the previous sync app before removing Groove.

Fix 3: Check 32-bit and 64-bit Office architecture
A 32-bit application cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit application cannot load a 32-bit DLL. A 64-bit version of Windows does not mean every Office application is 64-bit.
To check Office architecture:
- Open Word, Excel, or another Office application.
- Select File > Account.
- Select About Word, About Excel, or the equivalent entry.
- Read the architecture shown in the dialog, such as 32-bit or 64-bit.
Repair the Office installation with the matching architecture. Do not copy a 32-bit file into a 64-bit Office directory, or the reverse.
Also check for remnants of Office 2010, Office 2013, and Microsoft 365 installed together. Mixed versions can leave old paths, shell extensions, and registry entries that cause a loader failure even when grooveex.dll exists.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine a legitimate file after an update or a change in file reputation.

- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
grooveex.dll, Office, Groove, or OneDrive for Business. - Expand the entry and review its original path and detection details.
Restore the file only when all of these are true:
- It was located inside the expected Office installation directory.
- The file came from an official Office installation.
- Its digital signature identifies Microsoft.
- Your security administrator confirms the detection is a false positive.
If the path is unusual, the signature is missing, or the file came from an unofficial source, leave it quarantined and run a full scan. Microsoft documents Protection History in its guide to Windows Security detections.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and System File Checker are secondary steps for this problem. They repair Windows components and protected Windows files; they do not specifically reinstall an Office-owned grooveex.dll.
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the affected application again. If it reports that it found no integrity violations, return to Office repair rather than repeatedly running SFC.
Repeating these commands without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting circular. Fix 6: Reset modern OneDrive only when OneDrive is the failing component
The modern OneDrive reset command can repair synchronization settings, but it does not necessarily restore the legacy Groove component.

Press Windows + R, enter the following command, and select OK:
%localappdata%MicrosoftOneDriveonedrive.exe /reset
If Windows cannot find it, try:
C:Program FilesMicrosoft OneDriveonedrive.exe /reset
or:
C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OneDriveonedrive.exe /reset
Start OneDrive again from the Start menu. Use this step when modern OneDrive is not syncing or will not start. If an older Office program specifically reports grooveex.dll, repair the Office or legacy sync installation instead. Microsoft documents these commands in its OneDrive reset instructions.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent change
If the error began immediately after a major update, software installation, or removal, System Restore may return the related configuration to an earlier state.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Select OK.
- Choose a restore point dated before the failure.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore and restart Windows.
System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can remove applications or updates installed after the selected restore point. Use Microsoft’s System Restore procedure if you need the Control Panel route.

A display-driver reinstall is not a primary fix for grooveex.dll. Consider it only if Event Viewer identifies a driver-related crash or the problem began with broader graphics or shell instability.
To inspect drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the event, such as Display adapters.
- Right-click the device and choose Properties.
- Review the General and Driver tabs.
- Use Update driver or uninstall the device only when the event evidence points there.
- Restart Windows and install the driver from the device manufacturer or Windows Update.
Do not disable random devices because a DLL error appeared. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify the stale versions, while driver installation through the full version is optional; it cannot replace the Office component that owns grooveex.dll.
Why copying or registering the DLL usually fails
Do not copy grooveex.dll into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- A random application folder
The file may require matching Office binaries and dependencies. A copied file can also have the wrong architecture, version, language, or signature.

Some cataloged builds expose registration functions, so registration can be technically applicable in a controlled Office repair scenario. However, it cannot recreate missing dependencies or repair an incomplete installation. Registering the wrong file can create additional path and version conflicts.
If an administrator specifically instructs you to register the verified file, use the regsvr32 command that matches the file and calling architecture. Otherwise, repair Office instead. Microsoft documents the command’s behavior in its regsvr32 reference.

If Office repair still does not restore the file
Collect these details before escalating:
- The exact error text.
- The failing executable.
- The full path where Windows expects
grooveex.dll. - Office version and 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- Whether Groove, SharePoint Workspace, or legacy OneDrive is still required.
- Windows Security Protection History results.
- Any recent Office uninstall, migration, or update.
Then check Event Viewer:
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an error at the time of the failure.
- Record the application name, faulting module, and exception details.
If repair repeatedly fails, remove conflicting Office versions and reinstall the same Office product from the organization’s Microsoft 365 portal or approved deployment source. For managed computers, the administrator may need to rebuild the Office deployment rather than restore one file.
FAQ
Is grooveex.dll malware?
No. It is a legitimate Microsoft Office-related DLL associated with Groove, SharePoint Workspace, and legacy OneDrive for Business. Still, verify the path, Microsoft digital signature, and provenance of the particular copy on your computer.
Is grooveex.dll part of Windows?
No. It is not a standard Windows system DLL. It is normally installed with a compatible Office or legacy synchronization component.
Do I need Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
There is no evidence that installing those runtimes is the general fix for this Office-owned file. Repair the Microsoft product that installed it first.
Can I remove Groove?
Only after confirming that no older SharePoint Server environment or business workflow still requires Groove.exe. Modern OneDrive does not use grooveex.dll, but older SharePoint deployments may still depend on the legacy client.
Why does the error appear in File Explorer?
