“The program can’t start because libgthread-2.0-0.dll is missing from your computer.”
If Windows says libgthread-2.0-0.dll was not found, cannot be loaded, or is not designed to run on Windows, repair the application that installed it rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The 60-second answer
libgthread-2.0-0.dll is a Windows library from GThread, part of the open-source GLib runtime. It is commonly bundled with GTK-based desktop applications and games.

It is not a normal Windows system file. The correct copy should usually be inside the affected program’s installation folder or its private runtime folder. There is no single universal copy that works for every application because programs can require different GLib builds, architectures, and companion libraries.
Use this order:
- Identify the application named in the error.
- Repair, verify, or reinstall that application from its official source.
- Check whether Windows Security quarantined the file.
- Confirm that the program and its runtime use the same 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- Investigate Visual C++ or wider Windows corruption only if the application’s own repair does not work.
Do not copy the DLL into System32, SysWOW64, or a global PATH folder.

What causes the error
The filename alone cannot identify the program that needs it. The most common causes are:
- An incomplete or damaged application installation
- An update that replaced only part of the application
- Antivirus software quarantining or deleting the file
- Moving the application folder manually
- A cleanup utility removing runtime files
- A 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch
- Another missing GLib, GTK, compiler-runtime, or system dependency
- A counterfeit or damaged application package
The wording “specified module could not be found” does not always mean that libgthread-2.0-0.dll itself is absent. Windows may find the named DLL but fail to load one of its dependencies.
1. Identify the parent application
Before replacing anything, determine which program is failing.
Check these locations:
- Read the title bar of the error window.
- Look at the desktop shortcut or Start menu entry used to launch the program.
- Right-click the shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, read the path in Target.
- Open that folder in File Explorer.
- Search the folder for
libgthread-2.0-0.dll.
If the file is present, do not assume it is the correct file. The error may be caused by a missing dependency, a damaged installation, or an incompatible architecture.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf the program came from Steam, Epic, or another launcher, note the exact game or application name. The launcher’s verification process is generally safer than replacing one library manually.
2. Repair the affected application
Start with Windows’ built-in repair option.
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Repair normally preserves the application and its user data. If the error remains, return to the same screen and choose Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings or locally stored data.
Traditional desktop programs
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Repair, Change, or Modify, if offered.
- Complete the installer’s repair process.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If no repair option exists, download the installer from the application publisher or use the official launcher. Uninstall the program only after preserving important documents, saved games, profiles, and settings.
After uninstalling:
- Restart Windows.
- Install the application again using the correct installer.
- Avoid copying files from an older installation into the new folder.
- Launch the program once installation finishes.
The goal is to restore the complete matching set of GLib and GTK files, not just libgthread-2.0-0.dll.

For a game or launcher-managed application, use its built-in repair function.
Typical steps are:
- Open the launcher.
- Open your library.
- Select the affected game or application.
- Open its settings or management menu.
- Choose Verify, Verify integrity, Repair, or similar.
- Allow the launcher to replace missing or damaged files.
- Start the program again.
Do not add a random DLL to the game directory after verification. If the launcher restores the file and it disappears again, investigate antivirus quarantine before repeating the repair.
4. Check Windows Security quarantine
Windows Security or another antivirus product may have removed the DLL.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand an entry related to the affected application.
- Confirm that the path belongs to the program you intentionally installed.
- Restore the file only if the application came from a trustworthy official source and the detection is understood.
Microsoft warns that restoring a genuine threat can put the computer at risk. Do not restore a suspicious file merely because its filename is familiar.
Recommended Free Tools
If the file was quarantined, repairing or reinstalling the complete application is usually preferable to restoring one file. Add an exclusion only according to the application vendor’s documented guidance, and never use an exclusion to make an untrusted program run.
5. Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit application needs a compatible 32-bit runtime. A 64-bit application needs a compatible 64-bit runtime. The same filename can exist in both architectures.
To inspect the application:
- Open the application’s installation folder.
- Right-click the main executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab and review available information.
- Check the application’s official requirements or installer architecture.
Windows does not make every executable’s architecture obvious through this dialog. If the details are unclear, use the application vendor’s documentation or reinstall using the installer intended for that program.
Do not replace a 32-bit DLL with a 64-bit copy, or the reverse. Do not mix files from different application versions. A correct repair must restore compatible versions of related libraries, which may include GLib, GTK, GObject, GIO, Pango, Cairo, and compiler runtime files.
6. Install Visual C++ only when the application requires it
Some applications that bundle GTK or GLib also require a Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable package. That package does not directly install libgthread-2.0-0.dll.
Check the application’s installer, readme, or official prerequisite list. If it specifically requires a Visual C++ package:
- Use Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
- Choose the architecture requested by the application.
- Install the package.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
Installing every available runtime is not a reliable repair. If the application’s own installer includes prerequisites, run that installer instead.
7. Do not use regsvr32 for this DLL
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide the self-registration entry point used by COM or ActiveX components. A GLib runtime library is normally loaded as an application dependency, not registered globally.

Running this command is not a repair:
regsvr32 libgthread-2.0-0.dll
It will commonly produce an entry-point error or accomplish nothing. It can also create confusion by suggesting that the DLL was installed incorrectly. The appropriate action is to repair the application that loads the library.
8. Avoid DLL download sites and system-folder copying
Do not download libgthread-2.0-0.dll from a random DLL website, file-sharing page, forum attachment, or another computer.
That approach can introduce:
- Malware or a tampered file
- The wrong GLib build
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- Missing companion libraries
- Version or ABI incompatibility
- A file that fails again after the next application update
Do not copy it into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- A global
PATHdirectory
Application-local deployment allows Windows to resolve the dependency alongside the executable and helps prevent conflicts between unrelated programs. The Windows DLL search order explains why the application directory is normally important.
The safe sources are the affected program’s official installer, its official launcher, or a package manager specifically documented by the software vendor. Developers using GTK should follow the current GTK and MSYS2 packaging documentation rather than copying runtime files between applications.

SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They generally will not recreate a third-party GTK or GLib DLL that belongs in an application folder.
Use them when other Windows features or system files are also failing:
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application.
If these commands report that Windows repaired files but the same application still shows the DLL error, repair or reinstall the application. SFC and DISM are not substitutes for restoring its private runtime.
If you prefer help identifying which Windows components need attention rather than repeatedly guessing through SFC and DISM, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair requires the full version. Reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to that program.
10. Update drivers only when there are wider symptoms
A graphics or chipset driver is not the usual cause of a missing libgthread-2.0-0.dll. Consider driver work only if the application also crashes with display errors, hardware detection problems, or other graphics-related failures.
To check manually:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Review the provider and date.
- Use Update Driver only with a driver supplied through Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Do not remove a working driver merely because this DLL error appears. If several devices have outdated drivers and you want to avoid hunting through multiple manufacturer pages, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show its findings; driver installation requires the full version, and it is not a substitute for reinstalling the application that owns this DLL.
11. When Windows Features are not the answer
Turning Windows Features on or off will not normally install GThread. Do not enable random legacy components to resolve this error.
You can check the feature list if the application’s documentation specifically requires a Windows component:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review only the feature named by the application vendor.
- Select OK and restart if Windows requests it.
Do not install legacy .NET, SMB, or compatibility features solely because libgthread-2.0-0.dll is missing.
FAQ
Is libgthread-2.0-0.dll part of Windows?
No evidence supports treating it as a Windows system DLL. It belongs to GThread, part of GLib, and is normally supplied with the third-party application that uses it.
Which application needs this file?
The filename alone does not identify the application. Use the error window, shortcut target, launcher library, and application folder to determine which program is failing.
Can I download a replacement DLL?
Do not use an arbitrary standalone download. The correct file depends on the application’s bundled runtime, architecture, version, and dependencies. Repair or reinstall the parent application instead.
Why does Windows say the specified module was not found when the file is present?
Another dependency may be missing, or the DLL may be incompatible with the application. Reinstall the complete runtime rather than replacing only the named file.
Should I copy it into System32?
No. Keep application DLLs with the application unless the vendor explicitly documents another deployment method.
Will Visual C++ Redistributable fix it?
Only if the application separately requires that runtime. Visual C++ Redistributable does not directly provide libgthread-2.0-0.dll.
What if reinstalling does not help?
Check Protection History, confirm that the launcher repaired the correct installation, remove mixed files from manually copied folders, verify the application architecture, and read the complete error text for another missing dependency. If the failure began after a known system change and no installer or backup is available, System Restore is a last resort, not a targeted DLL repair.
