Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing files, record:
- The exact error text, such as “cnbp_311.dll was not found” or “The code execution cannot proceed.”
- When it appears: during startup, printer installation, printing, or when opening another program.
- The exact Canon printer model shown on the label or in Windows.
- Your Windows edition and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- The file path named in the error, if Windows displays one.
- Whether the printer still appears under Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners on Windows 11, or Settings → Devices → Printers & scanners on Windows 10.

No authoritative Canon file manifest identifies every printer model that uses it, so the filename alone is not enough to choose a replacement driver.

Treat those details as historical metadata, not as a specification for every copy. A 32-bit component required by an older printer package cannot be replaced casually with a 64-bit file, and copying either file into a guessed Windows folder is not a valid repair.
The file is not known as a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, game library, or ordinary Windows application DLL. If a game or unrelated application reports it, check whether an old Canon printer utility or driver was installed on that computer before assuming the application owns the file.

Fix 1: Reinstall the complete Canon printer package
This is the most likely fix when the error began after removing a printer, updating Windows, uninstalling Canon software, cleaning the disk, or installing a printer driver incompletely.
1. Identify the printer
Find the model on the printer label, its original paperwork, or the existing Windows printer entry. Do not rely on cnbp_311.dll to identify the model because the same legacy component may appear in more than one Canon package.
2. Download the correct package
Open Canon’s official Software and Drivers support portal. Select the exact printer model, your installed Windows version, and the matching architecture.
Prefer the complete model-specific driver and software package when Canon provides one. A complete package restores the DLL together with its INF file, dependencies, registry configuration, and print-spooler integration. Do not download the DLL by itself.

If Canon does not offer a Windows 10 or Windows 11 package for the printer, check whether Windows offers a supported inbox or IPP driver. If no compatible driver exists, the practical solution may be replacing the obsolete printer rather than forcing an old package into a newer Windows installation.
3. Remove the broken printer entry
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose the Canon printer.
- Select Remove and confirm.
On Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose the Canon printer.
- Select Remove device.
If the printer is no longer listed, continue with the driver installation. Do not manually delete random files from C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or the DriverStore.
4. Restart and install
Restart Windows. Run the Canon installer as administrator by right-clicking it and selecting Run as administrator. Connect or power on the printer only when the installer requests it.

If Windows asks whether to replace an existing driver, select the option that installs the current Canon package. When installation finishes, open Printers & scanners, select the printer, open its management options, and print a test page.
A successful repair means the printer installs without the DLL error and can print a test page. If the same message returns, remove the printer again and continue to the stale-driver and spooler steps below rather than copying a replacement DLL.
When several device drivers are outdated, identifying the correct package manually can mean comparing models, architectures, and old vendor downloads. Fix 2: Remove a stale driver and restart Print Spooler
An incomplete uninstall can leave a startup reference, printer queue, or spooler configuration pointing to cnbp_311.dll.
First, open Settings → Printers & scanners and remove every unused copy of the affected Canon printer. Restart the computer.

- Double-click the service and confirm Startup type is set to Automatic.
Reinstall the correct Canon package after restarting the service.
For an advanced cleanup, open Print server properties:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
printui.exe /s /t2. - Press Enter.
- On the Drivers tab, select an old Canon driver that clearly belongs to the removed printer.
- Select Remove.
- Choose Remove driver and driver package when Windows offers that option.
Do not remove a driver unless you can identify it. Do not delete files directly from the driver store. If Windows says the driver is in use, restart the spooler and computer, then retry or use the Canon installer’s repair or removal option.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine a driver component after a scan or cleanup operation.

Open your antivirus application and inspect Quarantine, History, or Protection history for the exact filename. Restore the file only when all of the following are true:
- The file came from the official Canon installer.
- The detection is clearly identified as a false positive.
- The package is still appropriate for the exact printer and Windows architecture.
The safer process is to reinstall the official Canon package, then run a full security scan. Do not disable antivirus protection merely to install a DLL downloaded from an unrelated site.
If quarantine keeps removing the component, stop reinstalling it and investigate the detection. A missing printer DLL alone does not prove malware, but repeated detections should not be ignored.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use Windows repair commands when other protected files are also failing, Windows Update is reporting corruption, or the error appeared after broader system damage. These commands may not restore a third-party Canon driver package.
Install pending Windows updates first:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for DISM to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart when both commands are complete and test the printer again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component source, while SFC checks protected Windows files and replaces damaged cached copies. SFC is not guaranteed to reconstruct a missing Canon package.

It is optional, and a model-specific Canon reinstall is still required when the missing file belongs only to the printer package.
Fix 5: Check whether the error is only a startup leftover
If printing works but the message appears when Windows starts, the problem may be a stale Canon utility rather than an active driver failure.
Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc and select Startup apps. Look for an old Canon entry. Disable it temporarily, restart, and check whether the message disappears.
Also review:
- Settings → Apps → Installed apps on Windows 11.
- Settings → Apps → Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Event Viewer → Windows Logs → Application for the full error and referenced path.
Do not disable an entry permanently until you know what it controls. If the printer is no longer used, uninstall its remaining Canon software through Windows and remove its printer entry. If the printer is still needed, reinstall its current supported package instead.
Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 cnbp_311.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by certain COM or ActiveX components. Printer-driver modules are normally installed through the printer driver package and loaded by the print subsystem.
Running the command may produce an error saying that the entry point was not found. It does not restore missing dependencies, rebuild the printer configuration, or repair a damaged spooler. Use it only when official documentation for the specific component explicitly instructs you to register that DLL.
Why downloading the DLL alone is unsafe
Do not download cnbp_311.dll from a random DLL website and copy it into System32, SysWOW64, an application folder, or the printer directory.
An isolated file can be:
- The wrong printer-package revision.
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- Missing required dependencies.
- Untrusted or modified.
- Unregistered with the printer subsystem.
- Incompatible with the installed Windows build.
The correct source is the official Canon driver package selected for the exact printer model and Windows architecture. Use Windows Update and Microsoft repair tools for Windows components, not an arbitrary replacement DLL.

If the error persists
Collect this information before repeating the installation:
- Exact Canon printer model.
- Windows version, edition, and architecture.
- Full error text.
- File path shown in the message.
- Whether the error occurs at startup, during installation, or while printing.
- The relevant Event Viewer entry.
- Whether the printer appears under Printers & scanners.
- Whether antivirus quarantined the file.
- The result of DISM and SFC.
If reinstalling the correct Canon package still fails, the remaining cause may be an incompatible legacy driver, a damaged printer queue, a missing dependency, or a Windows installation problem. A Windows 7-era package may not work correctly on Windows 11 even if its installer runs. In that case, use a supported Windows driver or inbox printer driver where available rather than forcing an old DLL into the operating system.
FAQ
Is cnbp_311.dll a Windows system file?
It is better treated as a Canon printer-driver component distributed through a Windows driver package, not as a normal Windows core DLL. Historical databases may list it alongside Windows versions, but that does not make it a universal system file.
Which Canon printer needs this file?
No authoritative public Canon file list identifies one definitive printer model. Identify the printer from its label or Windows settings, then choose its driver from Canon’s support portal.
Should I copy it to System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Those folders serve different architecture roles, and copying the wrong file can create additional loader errors. Reinstall the complete driver package instead.
Can SFC restore it?
Only if the missing file is part of a protected Windows installation. SFC may not restore a third-party Canon driver file. Reinstall Canon’s package first when the error is limited to printing.

The message can mean that a dependency of cnbp_311.dll is missing, not necessarily that the named file itself is absent. This is another reason to reinstall the complete driver package rather than replacing one DLL.
What if I no longer own the printer?
Uninstall the remaining Canon software, remove the printer, and disable any leftover Canon startup entry. If another application still requests the file, use Event Viewer to identify that application before removing anything else.
