Start with this diagnostic checklist
cuesdk_2015.dll is a legacy Corsair CUE SDK library used by games and applications that control Corsair device lighting. cuesdk_2015.dll is not a Windows system file, so the safest fix is normally to repair the game or application that requested it.
Before changing anything, record:
- The program named in the error: Check the dialog title, the game launcher, or the executable path.
- When the error appears: Note whether it occurs at startup, after an update, or only when a mod, overlay, or RGB feature loads.
- The application architecture: A 32-bit program needs
CUESDK_2015.dll; a 64-bit program may needCUESDK.x64_2015.dll. - The full file path: Event Viewer or the application folder can show which executable is calling the library.
- Any recent antivirus action: A quarantine event often explains why a previously working game suddenly fails.
Do not download the DLL from a random file repository or copy it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. That can introduce malware, the wrong SDK version, or the wrong architecture, and it usually leaves the damaged application installation unfixed.
1. Repair the application that owns the file
The missing file normally belongs beside the executable that uses it. A game may include it for optional Corsair keyboard or lighting effects, while another application may keep it in its own SDK folder.
First, open the installation folder:
- Right-click the application’s shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Select Open File Location.
- Look for
CUESDK_2015.dllorCUESDK.x64_2015.dllbeside the program files.
Do not rename the x64 file to the 32-bit filename. The filename and architecture are part of the program’s expected interface. A mismatch can produce a “not designed to run on Windows” message, an entry-point error, or an immediate crash.

For a Steam game
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish and then start the game again.
Steam will compare the installation with its depot and restore missing or damaged files. If the error disappears, no separate DLL installation is needed.
If verification completes but the error remains, close Steam completely and repeat the process after restarting Windows. Also remove recently installed mods or overlays temporarily, because a third-party component may be requesting an older SDK independently of the main game.
For another launcher
Open the launcher and look for the game’s menu, settings, or installation options. Use Repair, Verify, Scan and Repair, or Restore files, depending on the launcher. Let the operation complete before launching the program again.
For a standalone application
Download the installer only from the application’s publisher or the official account page. Uninstall the damaged program, restart Windows, and install it again. If the installer offers a repair option, try that before removing the application.
Installing Corsair iCUE alone is not guaranteed to restore this exact legacy file. Many games and applications ship the SDK library themselves, and an older program may require the version included in its original package.
2. Check Windows Security quarantine
Windows Security or another antivirus product may have removed the bundled DLL.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Review recent detections for the affected game’s or application’s folder.
- Expand a detection to view its path and action.
Do not restore the file merely because its name matches the error. Restore it only when the original application was installed from a trusted official source and the detected file belongs to that installation. Microsoft notes that restored files are scanned again.
The safer sequence is:
- Leave the quarantined copy alone.
- Verify or reinstall the parent application from its official source.
- Update the antivirus definitions.
- Start the application.
- If the newly restored file is quarantined again, submit it to the antivirus vendor as a possible false positive rather than permanently disabling protection.
If the file repeatedly disappears after verification, check antivirus history, the application’s folder permissions, available disk space, and the disk itself.

A missing cuesdk_2015.dll is not automatically a Visual C++ problem. Repair the runtime when the DLL is present but Windows reports a dependency such as:
MSVCP140.dllVCRUNTIME140.dll- A Universal CRT component
- An error saying the application could not start correctly
Use Microsoft’s current supported Visual C++ v14 redistributables:
- Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable downloads
- Download the x86 installer
- Download the x64 installer
On 64-bit Windows, install or repair both packages because many systems run a mixture of 32-bit and 64-bit applications. The application’s architecture, not just the architecture of Windows, determines which runtime it needs.

For each installer:
- Download it from Microsoft.
- Run the installer.
- Accept the license terms.
- Choose Repair if offered.
- If repair is unavailable, complete the installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the affected application.
If the file itself is missing, the Visual C++ installer will not replace it. Return to application verification or reinstallation.

The common legacy names are different:
| Application type | Expected library |
|---|---|
| 32-bit application | CUESDK_2015.dll |
| 64-bit application | CUESDK.x64_2015.dll |
A 64-bit operating system can run 32-bit programs, so do not assume that every application needs the x64 library. To inspect an executable:
- Right-click its shortcut and select Open File Location.
- Right-click the executable and choose Properties.
- Open Details and note the available product information.
- If the program has its own launcher settings, check whether it offers 32-bit and 64-bit modes.
The definitive correction is to restore the matching file from that application’s own installer. Do not download a newer Corsair SDK and substitute it for the bundled file. A game may depend on an older SDK interface, and changing the version can create procedure-entry-point errors.
5. Address a “bad image” or entry-point error
Messages such as “not designed to run on Windows,” “bad image,” or “the procedure entry point could not be located” usually mean the problem is not a simple missing file.
Work through these checks:
- Run the application’s repair or file verification again.
- Confirm that the DLL is in the application’s directory.
- Confirm that the filename matches the application’s architecture.
- Remove any manually copied replacement.
- Check whether antivirus altered the file.
- Repair the matching Visual C++ redistributable.
- Reinstall the application from its official installer.
If the error names a particular entry point, the application may be loading an incompatible SDK version. Restore the complete application package instead of replacing only the DLL.

6. Do not use regsvr32 for this runtime DLL
regsvr32 is intended for registering components that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. A runtime library loaded by a game or application does not become usable because it was registered.
If you run:
regsvr32 CUESDK_2015.dll
and Windows reports that DllRegisterServer was not found, that result is expected for an ordinary SDK runtime. It does not diagnose or repair the missing-file problem.
The correct location is normally the host application’s directory, not a Windows system folder. Copying the file into System32 or SysWOW64 can create search-order conflicts, architecture confusion, and version collisions with unrelated software.
7. Repair Windows components only when multiple programs fail
Because this is normally an application-bundled file, DISM and SFC are not the first fix. Use them when several unrelated applications or Windows components are also failing.

- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run DISM first:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish, then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete and test the application again. A clean SFC result does not prove that the application’s Corsair DLL is present, because this file is not normally protected Windows system content.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed makes diagnosis difficult. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows what it identifies; repairs are completed by the full version, but reinstalling the affected game or application remains the definitive fix for its bundled DLL.

A display, motherboard, USB, or Corsair-device driver is not the usual cause of a missing SDK file. Consider driver work when the error began after a hardware change, when the program crashes while accessing a device, or when Device Manager reports a problem.

- Expand categories such as Keyboards, Universal Serial Bus controllers, Human Interface Devices, and Display adapters.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a vendor driver, use the hardware manufacturer’s official support page. Do not remove a working device driver just because cuesdk_2015.dll is missing.
Manually checking dozens of devices and versions can be time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan that identifies its findings; driver installation is completed by the full version, and it is not a substitute for repairing the application that owns this DLL.
9. Use System Restore only as a later fallback
If the problem began immediately after a failed application update or major system change, System Restore may help, but it is not the normal solution.
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Review the affected programs and changes.
- Confirm the restore.
System Restore can remove applications, settings, and changes made after the selected point. Try application repair and reinstallation first.
When the problem indicates something broader
Treat the issue as more than a single missing SDK file when:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Several unrelated programs report missing DLLs.
- Windows itself is unstable or cannot update.
- The restored file disappears repeatedly.
- Disk errors, permission errors, or unexpected security alerts appear.
- The error remains after a clean reinstall from the official application source.
In those cases, check Windows Update, review antivirus detections, inspect disk health, and run DISM and SFC. If malware is suspected, use Windows Security’s scan options and avoid restoring unknown quarantined files.
FAQ
Is cuesdk_2015.dll a Windows file?
No. It is a legacy Corsair CUE SDK library used by applications that integrate Corsair device lighting. It should normally remain with the program that uses it.
Is this file exclusive to Terraria?
No. Terraria is one example of a game whose Windows files can include it, but the same reusable SDK component can be included by other games and applications.
Will installing iCUE fix the error?
Not necessarily. The affected application may require the exact legacy SDK file that its own installer shipped. Repair or reinstall the parent application first.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Should I download the DLL separately?
No. Random DLL repositories can provide malware, an incorrect version, or the wrong architecture. Restore the file through Steam verification, the application’s repair function, or its official installer.
Why does regsvr32 say that registration failed?
This library is generally loaded by an application rather than registered as a COM component. A missing DllRegisterServer message does not mean you need another copy of the file.
What if the file exists but the error continues?
Check whether the application needs the x64 filename, whether the DLL is corrupted, whether antivirus modified it, and whether Visual C++ dependencies are missing. Then restore the complete application package rather than copying another DLL over it.
