mcx2filter.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows Media Center component, not a normal game DLL or Visual C++ runtime. If Windows says it is missing or cannot be loaded, repair the Windows component or identify the obsolete program requesting it instead of downloading a replacement from a random DLL website.
What this file actually does
Mcx2Filter.dll is known as the Media Center Extender Encryption Filter, a DirectShow filter used by Windows Media Center. Public DirectShow inventories associate it with:
C:WindowsehomeMcx2Filter.dll
The ehome folder contains Windows Media Center files. This component was primarily associated with Windows 7 and Windows 8-era systems that included Media Center.
It is not:
- A graphics or audio driver
- A DirectX redistributable
- A Visual C++ runtime
- A general-purpose Windows 10 or Windows 11 application dependency
- A file that should normally be copied into
System32,SysWOW64, or a game folder
Windows 7 editions that included Media Center could contain this file. Windows 7 N and KN editions excluded Windows Media Center and related media technologies unless the applicable Windows Media Feature Pack was installed.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 do not provide a supported standalone mcx2filter.dll package. Their Media Feature Pack, where applicable to N editions, restores modern Windows media technologies and should not be treated as a guaranteed source for this legacy Media Center file.
Causes by symptom
| Symptom | Most likely explanation | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| The error appears when Media Center starts | Media Center is disabled, damaged, or incomplete | Re-enable Media Center, then run DISM and SFC |
The file is absent from C:Windowsehome |
A protected Windows file was deleted or could not be serviced | Run DISM followed by SFC |
| The message appears after an upgrade to Windows 10 or 11 | An old startup item or application still requests Media Center | Identify and remove or update that obsolete requester |
| Antivirus reports the file | The file may have been quarantined, or the detection may involve a suspicious copy | Check quarantine, verify the path and Microsoft signature, then repair Windows |
| The error appears only in one old application | That application may be reporting a legacy dependency failure | Update, repair, or remove the application after checking Windows health |
| SFC cannot repair the file | The component store or repair source is also damaged | Run DISM again, use matching installation media if necessary, then retry SFC |
| A downloaded copy fails to load | The copy may have the wrong build, architecture, or dependencies | Remove it and use Windows servicing or recovery |
Reported wording can vary. Users may see messages such as “Mcx2Filter.dll is missing,” “was not found,” or “cannot be loaded.” The exact wording does not identify the cause by itself.
Fix 1: Restart Windows and check Windows Update
A pending servicing operation can leave a Windows component unavailable until the computer restarts.
- Save your work.
- Select Start → Power → Restart.
- After signing in, open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install applicable updates and restart again if Windows requests it.
On Windows 7, open Control Panel → System and Security → Windows Update, select Check for updates, install applicable updates, and restart.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Microsoft recommends running Deployment Image Servicing and Management before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component source that SFC uses to restore protected files.

- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the command to finish. Do not close the window while it is running.
- Restart Windows.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt again.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart when the scan completes.
- Try the program or Windows feature that produced the error.
Microsoft’s repair guidance is available in the System File Checker and DISM instructions.
A successful repair may report that corrupted files were found and repaired. If the error disappears and the file returns to the expected ehome location, the repair worked.

If DISM reports that source files could not be found, connect to Windows Update and run the command again. On older Windows 7 systems, use matching installation media as the repair source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:X:sourcesinstall.wim /LimitAccess
Replace X: with the actual installation-media drive letter and use the image index matching the installed edition. Do not use installation media from a different Windows release or edition.
If SFC says it found corrupted files but could not repair some of them, run DISM again, restart, and repeat sfc /scannow. For additional detail, inspect:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
Do not replace a protected Windows file manually while the component store remains damaged.

Repeating DISM and SFC while comparing long logs can be tedious, particularly when the underlying problem is broader Windows corruption. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it identifies; repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and Windows servicing remains the appropriate repair path for this Microsoft component.
Fix 3: Re-enable Media Center on eligible Windows 7 editions
If the computer still runs an edition of Windows 7 that includes Media Center, the feature may have been disabled.
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Choose Turn Windows features on or off.
- Expand Media Features.
- Select Windows Media Center.
- Select OK.
- Restart the computer.
- Run DISM and SFC if the file is still missing.
If Windows Media Center is not listed, check the Windows edition under Control Panel → System and Security → System. Windows 7 N and KN editions omitted Media Center and related media technologies. Microsoft documents the applicable Windows Media Feature Pack behavior for Windows 7 N and KN.
Install only the Media Feature Pack intended for the exact Windows 7 edition and architecture. Do not use a modern Windows 10 or Windows 11 Media Feature Pack as a substitute for the old Media Center component.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine a legitimate file, or it may detect a suspicious copy placed outside the normal Windows path.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
Mcx2Filter.dll. - Note the file path and detection name.
- If the file was found in a game or application directory, do not restore it automatically.
- If it was found at
C:WindowsehomeMcx2Filter.dll, verify the file’s Microsoft signature before considering restoration. - Run a full scan if the detection remains active.
- Repair the component with DISM and SFC instead of overriding an active detection.
If antivirus repeatedly removes the file, investigate the detection rather than adding a broad exclusion. A trusted Windows repair source is safer than forcing an unknown copy back into the system.
Fix 5: Identify an obsolete startup item on Windows 10 or 11
If the error began after upgrading from Windows 7 or Windows 8, Windows itself may not be the program displaying the message. An old Media Center utility, scheduled task, or startup entry may still request the file.

- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable an entry that clearly belongs to an old Media Center utility or discontinued application.
- Restart Windows.
- If the message disappears, update or uninstall that application from Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
Also check Settings → Apps → Startup for startup entries managed outside Task Manager. If the requester is unclear, record the exact error text and the program name before disabling anything.
Reinstalling modern Windows Media Player will not necessarily restore Windows Media Center or mcx2filter.dll. If Media Center is not used, a warning caused by an obsolete startup entry can usually be resolved by removing that requester rather than restoring a legacy file.
Fix 6: Update a related driver only when the symptoms point to hardware
A sound, display, or capture-device problem can make an old multimedia application fail, but a driver update does not normally restore a missing Media Center DLL. Use Device Manager only when the error is accompanied by hardware symptoms such as missing audio, a disabled tuner, or a device warning.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Sound, video and game controllers or Display adapters.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- If the device is still faulty, visit the hardware manufacturer’s official support page for a driver matching the Windows edition and system architecture.
Driver hunting can mean checking many hardware versions and determining which package is actually stale. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; driver installation is performed by the full version. It is optional, and it will not replace the need to repair Windows or reinstall the program that requests mcx2filter.dll.
Fix 7: Use System Restore or an in-place repair
Use System Restore when the file worked recently and the problem began after a driver, cleanup utility, software installation, or servicing change.
- Open Control Panel.
- Search for Recovery.
- Select Open System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Confirm the restore and restart Windows.
If no suitable restore point exists, DISM cannot repair the component, and matching installation media is available, consider an in-place Windows repair. Back up important files first and use installation media matching the installed edition and architecture. A repair installation is preferable to manually copying an unverified DLL.
Why regsvr32 usually does not fix this
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general command for repairing every missing or damaged DLL.
Best Value
- Important notice: Microsoft Media Center Remote Controller can not work under Windows XP
- Compatible with Windows Vista Home Premium, Windows Vista Ultimate, Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Ultimate PC
- Include all of the buttons and functions necessary for Microsoft certification, including official Green Button.
- Small USB dongle style receiver
- Use standard Microsoft drivers, no software to install.
Do not make this the default repair:
regsvr32 Mcx2Filter.dll
A registration error, including a message that DllRegisterServer was not found, does not necessarily mean the file is corrupt. A missing Windows Media Center component should be restored through Windows Features, DISM, SFC, installation media, or recovery.
Do not copy the file into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder. A file from the wrong Windows build or architecture can fail to load and can hide the underlying component-store problem.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

No. Random DLL download sites cannot reliably establish the file’s Microsoft signature, Windows build, architecture, or compatibility with the installed Media Center components. A downloaded file may contain malware, may be incomplete, or may simply produce a different error.
Use Windows Update, Windows Features, Microsoft repair commands, matching installation media, System Restore, or an in-place repair. If a third-party program is the requester, use that program’s official installer or repair option instead.
FAQ
Is mcx2filter.dll malware?
The legitimate file is a Microsoft Windows Media Center component. A copy outside the expected Windows location, a failed signature check, or a security alert deserves investigation. The filename alone does not prove that every copy is safe.
Is it required for ordinary games?
No. It is associated with legacy Windows Media Center functionality. A game or application may nevertheless report the file if it has an obsolete media dependency or is incorrectly identifying the failed component.
Recommended Free Tools
Does Windows 11 include it?
Windows 11 does not provide a supported standalone Media Center installation path for this legacy file. If an old program requests it, identify that program rather than assuming the file must be restored.
What if Media Center is unused?
On an old Windows 7 system, a missing file may not affect normal use if Media Center is never opened. Still run DISM and SFC if Windows reports broader corruption, repeated file errors, or unexplained startup failures.
What should I include in a support request?
Provide the Windows edition and build, exact error text, full path shown in the message, whether Media Center is enabled, whether the system is N or KN, and the final DISM and SFC results. Also state whether the issue began after an upgrade, cleanup, antivirus event, or application installation.
