You may see “This application failed to start because emablt32.dll was not found.” Other common messages include “The program can’t start because emablt32.dll is missing from your computer” and “emablt32.dll could not be loaded.”

The 60-second answer

emablt32.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Outlook component called Outlook LDAP Address Book Provider. It supports Outlook’s MAPI address-book functionality and is associated with Office installations, not with Windows itself.

The safest fix is to repair Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365:

  1. Close Outlook and all Office programs.
  2. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  3. Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
  4. Select the three-dot menu beside it, then choose Modify.
  5. Select Quick Repair → Repair.
  6. Restart Windows and test Outlook.
  7. If the error remains, repeat the process and choose Online Repair → Repair.

Online Repair is more thorough and can replace missing or damaged Office files. It may require sign-in or Office reactivation.

Do not download a standalone copy of emablt32.dll and place it in System32. A downloaded file can have the wrong Office version, architecture, or malicious contents, while leaving the damaged installation untouched.

What emablt32.dll does

The file is an Outlook MAPI address-book provider. In practical terms, it helps Outlook communicate with LDAP directory services through its address-book system. Microsoft describes address-book provider DLLs as components that expose directory information to Outlook through MAPI, with ABProviderInit serving as an initialization entry point for these providers.

Microsoft records identify EMABLT32.DLL directly in Outlook security bulletins and update packages, including Microsoft Security Bulletin MS06-012 and Outlook 2016 updates.

It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, or .NET file. No verified Microsoft source identifies it as a Windows-protected system DLL.

A legitimate copy normally belongs within an Office installation or shared MAPI directory. The exact path varies by Office generation, installation technology, language, update level, and architecture. Do not assume that every installation uses the same folder.

Is emablt32.dll safe?

A genuine copy should have Microsoft as its digital-signature publisher and should be located inside an Office or Outlook-related directory.

To inspect the copy on your computer:

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select the Details tab.
  3. Right-click the failing Outlook or Office process and choose Open file location, if available.
  4. Search that installation and shared MAPI folders for EMABLT32.DLL.
  5. Right-click the file and choose Properties.
  6. Open Digital Signatures.
  7. Select the signature, choose Details, and confirm that Windows reports it as valid and identifies Microsoft as the signer.

The filename alone proves nothing. Treat the file as suspicious if it is in an unrelated application folder, directly in C:WindowsSystem32, or signed by an unexpected publisher. Do not replace it manually. Scan the computer and repair Office from Microsoft.

Which Office versions use it?

Historical Outlook and Office releases include Outlook 2000, XP, 2007, 2010, 2013, and 2016, along with later Microsoft 365 and Office builds. Availability depends on the installed Office generation, update level, language, installation type, and architecture.

Known Microsoft package records show architecture-specific Outlook 2016 copies, including versions such as 16.0.5134.1000 and 16.0.5176.1000. Older records include 32-bit versions such as 11.0.5510.0 and 12.0.4518.1014.

Do not select a replacement based on the 32 in the filename. Office x86 and x64 installations can use different component layouts, and Microsoft update packages can contain separate 32-bit and 64-bit copies. The correct file is the one delivered by the installed Office branch.

Why the error appears

The most likely causes are:

Cause What usually resolves it
Damaged or incomplete Office installation Quick Repair, then Online Repair
Mixed or incorrect Office architectures Remove conflicting installations and reinstall the matching branch
Failed Office update or rollback Install pending updates, restart, then repair Office
Antivirus quarantine Review Protection History and repair Office
Windows component corruption Run DISM and SFC, then repair Office
Legacy connector or MAPI software Repair or reinstall the product that reports the error
Tampering or malware Scan the system and reinstall Office from Microsoft

The error does not always originate in Outlook itself. A legacy MAPI client, connector, or specialist application may attempt to load the provider.

Fix 1: Run Office Quick Repair, then Online Repair

Quick Repair is the least disruptive repair and should be attempted first.

  1. Close Outlook.
  2. Close Word, Excel, Teams, and other Office applications.
  3. Open Settings.
  4. Select Apps → Installed apps.
  5. Search for Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
  6. Select the three-dot menu.
  7. Choose Modify.
  8. Approve the administrator prompt.
  9. Select Quick Repair.
  10. Choose Repair and wait for completion.
  11. Restart Windows.
  12. Open Outlook and repeat the action that produced the DLL error.

You should consider the repair successful when Outlook starts without the missing-file message and the affected address-book or directory operation works normally.

If the same message returns, run Online Repair:

  1. Return to Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  2. Select Modify for Office again.
  3. Choose Online Repair.
  4. Select Repair.
  5. Follow the sign-in or activation prompts.
  6. Restart Windows when the process finishes.

Online Repair downloads or reconstructs a fuller Office installation. It can take longer and may reset some Office configuration, but it is the preferred Microsoft fix for missing or damaged Office files.

Fix 2: Reinstall the correct Office installation

Use this when Online Repair fails, Office has mixed remnants, or the file disappeared during an incomplete uninstall.

First check what is installed:

  1. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  2. Search for “Office.”
  3. Look for more than one Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365 entry.
  4. Note whether the installation is managed by an organization.
  5. Remove obsolete or conflicting Office installations only when you know they are no longer required.
  6. Restart Windows.

Download Office again through Microsoft’s official Office installation instructions or your organization’s approved Microsoft deployment source.

Do not mix an Office 2007 or 2010 DLL with Office 2016 or Microsoft 365. Reinstall the same x86 or x64 Office branch that your license and other add-ins require. If an older connector depends on 32-bit MAPI, changing to 64-bit Office can require replacing or removing that connector as well.

After installation, restart Windows and test Outlook before reinstalling third-party add-ins.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software may quarantine a legitimate Office file after an update or repair.

In Windows Security:

  1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Look for an event involving EMABLT32.DLL or Outlook.
  5. Expand the event and inspect its path and publisher.
  6. Restore the file only if it came from a genuine, signed Office installation.
  7. If the path or publisher is unexpected, leave it quarantined.
  8. Run Office Online Repair instead.

Microsoft documents these quarantine and restore actions in its Protection History guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If quarantine happens again after repair, update Windows Security, run a full scan, and contact your security software vendor. Do not repeatedly restore an unsigned copy.

Fix 4: Check Office architecture and mixed installations

The filename does not guarantee that the required installation is 32-bit. Microsoft distributes architecture-specific Outlook packages, and an x86 Office installation cannot safely be repaired with an arbitrary x64 component.

Check for mixed installations:

  1. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  2. Search for Office, Outlook, and older Microsoft 365 entries.
  3. Remove obsolete Office versions after confirming that they are not needed.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Run Office repair again.
  6. If repair still fails, reinstall Office using the required x86 or x64 deployment.

Also check the application that displays the error. If it is a third-party connector, repair that connector rather than copying EMABLT32.DLL into its folder.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

Use these commands when Windows itself appears corrupted, applications show several unrelated system-file errors, or Office repair cannot complete. They are not a guaranteed repair for an Office-installed DLL.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
  4. Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Run Office Quick Repair or Online Repair again.

DISM repairs the Windows component source. SFC checks protected Windows files. Because emablt32.dll belongs to Outlook or Office rather than the Windows-protected file set, SFC may report no problem while the Outlook file is still missing.

Repeatedly hunting through Windows folders and rerunning DISM without knowing what changed is inefficient. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what needs attention; its full repair requires the full version, and it is not a substitute for reinstalling Office when Office owns the missing file.

Fix 6: Update related software or drivers only when applicable

Drivers are not the normal cause of an Outlook LDAP provider error. Do not install random drivers just because a DLL error appeared.

If the failing program is a specialized MAPI connector or depends on a device supplied by another vendor:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings → Windows Update.
  2. Select Advanced options → Optional updates.
  3. Expand Driver updates, if present.
  4. Install only updates that match the affected hardware.
  5. For a specific device, right-click Start and choose Device Manager.
  6. Expand the relevant category.
  7. Right-click the device and choose Update driver.
  8. Select Search automatically for drivers.
  9. Restart Windows and test the application.

When several devices are involved, manually identifying the correct versions can mean checking each vendor and hardware ID. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify stale drivers; installation through its full version is optional, and drivers will not replace the definitive Office repair.

Why regsvr32 usually does not help

regsvr32 registers a DLL that provides the COM self-registration entry point DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose missing-file repair command.

Do not run:

regsvr32 emablt32.dll

unless the software vendor specifically instructs you to do so and confirms that this DLL is intended to self-register. A missing or damaged Outlook MAPI provider is normally restored by Office repair or by repairing the application that installed it.

Likewise, do not copy the file into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Those folders are not universal DLL storage locations, and placing an incompatible Office component there can create loader conflicts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If another application reports the error

If Outlook itself is not the failing program:

  1. Note the executable named in the error.
  2. Right-click its shortcut and choose Open file location.
  3. Check whether it is an old connector, MAPI client, launcher, or specialist application.
  4. Use that program’s Repair, Verify files, or reinstall function.
  5. Install the application from its official vendor source.
  6. Repair Office afterward if the program integrates with Outlook.

An archived installer record has reported the file while checking the Microsoft LDAP Directory MAPI provider. That supports the possibility of a connector or integration exposing the problem, but it does not make manually downloading the DLL safe.

Final escalation checklist

Before contacting Microsoft or the application vendor, confirm:

  • Office and Outlook are fully closed.
  • Quick Repair and Online Repair were attempted.
  • The installed Office architecture is known.
  • Duplicate Office installations were removed or accounted for.
  • Protection History was checked.
  • The file’s path and Microsoft signature were inspected.
  • DISM and SFC were run only as secondary diagnostics.
  • The exact executable producing the message was identified.
  • No standalone DLL was copied into a Windows folder.
  • A clean Microsoft Office reinstall was attempted if repair failed.

FAQ

Is emablt32.dll a Windows system file?

No verified Microsoft source identifies it as a Windows component. Microsoft records place it in Outlook and Office update packages.

Should I download emablt32.dll separately?

No. Restore it through Office Repair or reinstall the application that owns it. A standalone copy can be malicious, mismatched, or the wrong architecture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the file always 32-bit?

No. Historical records include 32-bit copies, while Microsoft Outlook packages also document architecture-specific x86 and x64 copies. Match the installed Office branch.

Can SFC restore it?

Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while emablt32.dll is an Office or Outlook component. Run Office Repair after Windows diagnostics.

Do I need Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

Not based on this filename. emablt32.dll is an Outlook LDAP address-book provider, not an identified runtime component.

What if the error returns after Online Repair?

Check antivirus quarantine, remove conflicting Office installations, identify the executable that loads the file, and perform a clean Microsoft Office reinstall. If a connector is responsible, repair or reinstall that connector too.
