exchndl.dll is an application DLL from ExcHndl, an embeddable crash-reporting library associated with the Dr. MinGW project. If Windows says exchndl.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, repair or reinstall the program named in the error rather than downloading this file into a Windows folder.
The correct fix for exchndl.dll is usually to restore the owning application’s complete folder, including any companion debugging files it needs.

What this file actually does
ExcHndl is an exception-handler library. Programs can bundle it to collect crash information and generate diagnostic reports when they fail. It is not a normal Windows component and is not a general-purpose runtime like a Microsoft Visual C++ library.
The DLL normally sits beside the executable that uses it. Code::Blocks is a well-known example: its Windows build includes the ExcHndl crash handler. Other MinGW-built tools, games, older Windows applications, and software based on Dr. MinGW may include their own copy. Krita has also used an application-local exchndl.dll when built with Dr. MinGW.

There is no single authoritative version or file size for every copy. The file can vary with the application and the bundled Dr. MinGW release. A displayed value such as 32-bit 0.0.0.0 and 0.41 MB should not be treated as a universal specification.
Windows searches an unpackaged application’s directory before the system directory when resolving ordinary DLL loads. That is why copying exchndl.dll to C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 is the wrong approach.

The exact wording varies between Windows versions and applications. A visible exchndl.dll does not prove that the DLL is the only missing component.
Fix 1: Identify and repair the owning application
Start with the full path in the error dialog. If the path includes a game, development tool, or program folder, that folder identifies the likely owner.
For example, a path containing CodeBlocks, a game installation directory, or an application’s bin folder points to the program that must be repaired. Do not start by searching Windows folders for a replacement DLL.
Use Windows repair
- Close the affected application.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the application named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Repair is successful when the program opens without the exchndl.dll message. If Windows has no Repair option, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, right-click the program, and choose Repair or Change.
Some desktop applications do not provide either option. In that case, uninstall the program, restart Windows, and install it again from the publisher’s official installer. For a portable ZIP application, download the matching official archive and extract the entire package again. Do not replace only exchndl.dll.
For games, use the launcher’s Verify, Verify integrity, Repair, or Scan and repair function before reinstalling the whole game. This restores missing files while preserving the rest of the installation where supported.

Security software can remove or quarantine an application DLL. This may be a false positive, but it can also indicate that the original installation has been modified.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the affected application or
exchndl.dll. - Read the detection details and file path.
- If the file came from a trusted official installer and the detection is clearly a mistake, use the available restore or allow action.
- If the detection identifies genuine malware or the source is uncertain, do not restore it.
- Reinstall the application from its official source instead.
After restoring a verified file, launch the application again. If Defender immediately removes it again, stop restoring it and investigate the detection. A clean reinstall is safer than repeatedly allowing a suspicious binary.
Fix 3: Restore the complete DLL bundle
ExcHndl may be deployed with companion files such as:
mgwhelp.dlldbghelp.dlldbgcore.dllsymsrv.dll
The exact bundle depends on the application. If the message says “the specified module could not be found” while exchndl.dll is visibly present, one of these dependencies, or another required API-set component, may be missing.

- Close the program.
- Open File Explorer and locate the application’s installation directory.
- Confirm that
exchndl.dllis beside the application executable or in its expectedbinfolder. - Do not mix files from different applications or releases.
- Run the application installer’s repair function.
- If repair is unavailable, reinstall the complete application package.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
This restores matching files built and tested as one application bundle.
Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit process cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit process cannot load a 32-bit DLL. A 32-bit application can run normally on 64-bit Windows, but it still requires 32-bit application DLLs.
The important match is:
- the application executable
exchndl.dll- its companion files
- the application’s installer or archive
It is not enough for the DLL to match the bitness of Windows.

If the error appeared after manually replacing the file, remove that replacement and reinstall the application’s matching build. Do not assume that a 64-bit Windows installation needs a 64-bit copy of every DLL.

Code::Blocks, for instance, provides Windows packages for different architectures. Install the package that matches the Code::Blocks build you are using, rather than combining a DLL from one package with an executable from another.
Fix 5: Install only a runtime named by the error
exchndl.dll itself does not automatically require Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET to be installed as a general fix. Installing unrelated runtimes will not repair a missing application-local DLL.
Read the complete error message:
- If it names
vcruntime140.dllormsvcp140.dll, install or repair the official Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable that the application requires. - If it names
mgwhelp.dll,dbghelp.dll,dbgcore.dll,symsrv.dll, or an API-set DLL, restore the application’s complete official bundle. - If it names a DirectX or .NET component, follow the application publisher’s requirements for that specific component.
Do not install a runtime merely because the error contains the word “DLL.”

Fix 6: Repair Windows components when other programs are also failing
SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They do not normally recreate an exchndl.dll bundled by a third-party application, so use them when multiple unrelated programs show corruption or Windows itself behaves abnormally.
First install pending updates:
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the computer.
Then run DISM followed by SFC:
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows when both commands finish.
- Test the affected application.
Success means DISM and SFC complete without an unrepaired corruption message, and other Windows components work normally. If exchndl.dll is still missing, repair or reinstall the owning application because SFC does not supply third-party application files.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting tedious. Fix 7: Update drivers only when the evidence points there
A graphics or device driver is not the normal cause of a missing exchndl.dll. Update drivers when the failure began after a hardware change, Windows update, or game launch problem and the error also identifies a driver or device component.

- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters.
- Right-click the device.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If Windows finds nothing, download the driver from the hardware manufacturer’s official support page. Do not replace exchndl.dll as a substitute for a graphics or chipset driver.

Do not run:
regsvr32 exchndl.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. ExcHndl is loaded by an application as a library, not registered as a Windows COM component. Registration will not rebuild a damaged application installation and may produce another error.
Also avoid:
- copying random DLLs into
System32 - copying random DLLs into
SysWOW64 - mixing
exchndl.dllwith debugging DLLs from another release - using DLL download sites
- disabling antivirus protection to force a file into place
Random downloads can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, or fail because the real problem is a missing companion file. The safe sources are the affected application’s official installer, launcher, repair function, or official package archive.
If the error still remains
Work through this checklist:
- Read the full path in the error dialog.
- Identify the executable that failed.
- Confirm whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Repair or reinstall that exact application.
- Check Windows Security Protection history.
- Restore the complete application directory, not one DLL.
- Look for a missing companion DLL named in the error.
- Confirm the application is not loading an unexpected copy from another directory.
- Check whether the installed release supports your Windows version.
- Run DISM and SFC only if there are signs of broader Windows corruption.
If the problem began immediately after an application installation or update, open Start > Settings > System > Recovery and use System Restore if a suitable restore point is available. Treat this as a last resort, not the first repair for an application-local DLL.

Is exchndl.dll a Windows system file?
No. It belongs to the ExcHndl library and is normally bundled with the application that uses it.
Which program installed exchndl.dll?
There is no universal owner. Code::Blocks is a known example, but other MinGW-built applications, games, and tools may include their own copy. The path in the error identifies the owner.
Do I need Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
