Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitcheshpmproduct.dll is most likely an older HP printer-software file, not a Windows component, and the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the HP package that installed it. The clearest public association is the HP LaserJet M1120 MFP software, but the filename alone does not prove which HP product owns your copy.
What this file actually does
Windows does not provide hpmproduct.dll as part of Windows 10 or Windows 11. It is an application DLL loaded by the program that installed it.
The strongest traceable association is older HP LaserJet M1120 MFP software. HP documents that package as including host-based print drivers, scanner drivers, scan software, and an installer or uninstaller. Public file-location evidence also places HPMProduct.dll inside an HP LaserJet M1120 MFP installation directory.
That does not establish that every copy belongs to the M1120. The file has no reliable public description, function list, complete product list, or confirmed modern Windows package. Identify the parent application from the error dialog and file path before changing anything.

A message such as “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency required by hpmproduct.dll is missing. The named DLL may exist while another library prevents it from loading.
Match the symptom to the likely cause
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| Error appears during printing, scanning, or HP setup | Damaged or incomplete HP installation | Reinstall the exact HP printer package |
| Error appears immediately after signing in | Leftover startup item or scheduled task | Identify and remove the obsolete HP entry |
| File disappeared after a security scan | Antivirus quarantine | Check Windows Security Protection history |
| HP software works on one computer but not another | Wrong architecture or unsupported legacy package | Confirm the application and Windows compatibility |
| Several Windows components also fail | Broader Windows corruption | Run Windows Update, DISM, then SFC |
| Error began after removing the printer | Orphaned HP software reference | Uninstall remaining HP software and disable its startup entry |
| The file is outside an HP installation folder | Untrusted or unrelated copy | Do not replace it manually; scan and reinstall from HP |
Fix 1: Identify the program requesting hpmproduct.dll
Do this before downloading or replacing any file.
Read the complete error
Write down:
- The exact error text
- The dialog title
- The executable name, if shown
- When the message appears
- The printer model
- Any path shown for
hpmproduct.dll
Common reported variants include “hpmproduct.dll is missing,” “The code execution cannot proceed,” and “There was a problem starting hpmproduct.dll.” These are generic Windows-style messages, so the wording alone does not identify the owner.
Check the file path
If the file still exists:
- Press Windows key + S.
- Search for
hpmproduct.dll. - Right-click the result and select Open file location.
- Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Check the General tab for its location.
- Open Digital Signatures, if that tab exists.
A path inside an HP printer-software directory is consistent with the expected cause. A copy in a temporary download folder, a user profile folder, or an unrelated application directory needs more scrutiny.
Do not assume that a file is safe merely because its name contains HP. Check its location, signature, and how it arrived on the computer.
Identify the launcher
If the error appears at sign-in:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for HP entries or an entry whose status points to the affected program.
- Right-click a suspicious entry and select Open file location.
- Record the executable name and folder before disabling anything.
For scheduled tasks:
- Press Windows key + S.
- Search for Task Scheduler and open it.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks with HP-related names.
- Open a task’s Actions tab to see which executable it launches.
- Disable only a task that clearly belongs to removed or broken HP software.
This distinguishes a missing application file from an obsolete startup reference.
Fix 2: Reinstall the exact HP printer package
This is the primary repair when the error occurs during printing, scanning, setup, or an HP utility.

Use HP’s official product support and Software and Drivers pages. Search for the exact printer model, not just “HP printer.” For the strongest known association, look for the HP LaserJet M1120 MFP support page.
Remove the damaged installation
- Disconnect or turn off the printer.
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for the HP printer model, HP driver package, HP scan software, or HP imaging software.
- Select the entry and choose Uninstall.
- Follow the removal wizard.
- Restart Windows.
If the program is not listed in Settings:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the relevant HP software.
- Choose Uninstall.
Remove only software clearly associated with the affected printer. Do not remove unrelated HP business or security software solely because the name begins with HP.
Install the replacement package
- Open HP’s official support site in your browser.
- Search for the exact printer model.
- Open Software and Drivers.
- Select the installed Windows release and system architecture when prompted.
- Choose the complete printer or multifunction package rather than an unrelated universal package, where HP provides a model-specific option.
- Download the installer.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the connection instructions.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Test printing and scanning separately.
HP’s M1120 pages primarily expose legacy operating systems. If your current Windows release is not listed, treat that as a compatibility warning rather than forcing an older package into the system.
Confirm success
The repair worked if:
- The error no longer appears at sign-in or when launching HP software.
- The printer appears under Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- A test page prints.
- The scan application opens and completes a test scan.
- The HP installer or utility no longer reports a missing component.
If the installer completes but the error remains, record the executable that launches it. The remaining problem may be an orphaned shortcut, scheduled task, or missing dependency.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may have removed or quarantined an application file. Restore it only when the file belongs to a legitimate HP installation and its origin is clear.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open an item related to
hpmproduct.dllor the HP installer. - Check the reported path and threat details.
- If the file is clearly from the official HP installation and you have verified its legitimacy, use the available restore or allow action.
- Reinstall the HP package afterward if the installation is incomplete.
- Run a scan if the path or provenance is suspicious.
Do not restore a copy obtained from an untrusted DLL download sites site. If the file is in a temporary folder or has no credible HP installation history, remove it and reinstall the complete package from HP.

Fix 4: Remove an orphaned HP startup entry
If you no longer use the printer, replacing hpmproduct.dll may be unnecessary. Remove the broken HP software reference instead.
Remove the application
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Uninstall the obsolete HP printer or scanning software.
- Restart Windows.
Disable a startup entry
- Open Settings → Apps → Startup.
- Turn off an HP entry that belongs to the removed printer software.
- Restart and check whether the message has disappeared.
You can also use Task Manager → Startup apps. Do not delete registry values or files at random. If the entry has no clear owner, inspect its file location first.
Fix 5: Check architecture and driver compatibility
A legacy 32-bit HP application can require a 32-bit DLL even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Do not replace it with a similarly named 64-bit file.
To check Windows architecture:
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select System → About.
- Read System type.
- Choose the matching architecture on HP’s driver page when that choice is available.
To update the printer through Device Manager:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, or Imaging devices.
- Right-click the affected HP device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
Device Manager may not provide the complete legacy HP software stack. If it cannot find a suitable driver, use the model-specific HP package instead.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when other Windows features fail
DISM and System File Checker repair protected Windows components. They normally will not restore an HP application DLL, but they are appropriate if Windows Update, built-in tools, or several system components are also malfunctioning.
First install pending updates:
- Open Settings → Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Then run DISM:
- Open Start and search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to complete.
- Restart Windows.
Run SFC from an elevated Command Prompt:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart and test the affected program.

Microsoft’s repair sequence is useful when Windows itself is damaged, but it is not a substitute for reinstalling the HP application that owns hpmproduct.dll.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing whether Windows found corruption can make troubleshooting circular. Outbyte PC Repair can scan and report system problems before its full-version repair features are used; it is optional, and the model-specific HP reinstall remains the correct repair when only this application is affected.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 7: Investigate dependencies, malware, or disk problems
If reinstalling the HP package does not help, the named DLL may be present but unable to load a dependency.
Check these items:
- Open the HP installation folder.
- Confirm that
hpmproduct.dllexists. - Check whether the error names another DLL.
- Review Event Viewer by pressing Windows key + X, selecting Event Viewer, and checking Windows Logs → Application.
- Run a Microsoft Defender scan from Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Scan options.
- If multiple files are disappearing or becoming corrupt, back up important data and check the disk for broader problems.
Do not copy a replacement into C:WindowsSystem32. The correct location is normally the application’s own installation directory, and copying files between directories can create version and architecture conflicts.
Should you run regsvr32?
Usually, no.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. There is no verified evidence that hpmproduct.dll is a self-registering component.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Running this command blindly:
regsvr32 hpmproduct.dll
may produce an error stating that the entry point is missing. That does not mean Windows needs a different copy of the file. Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor specifically instructs you to register this exact DLL and provides the correct path.
Should you use System Restore?
Use System Restore only when the error began after a known software change and an appropriate restore point exists.

FAQ
Is hpmproduct.dll part of Windows?
No evidence supports that. Treat it as a third-party application DLL, most plausibly from older HP printer software.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallDoes every copy belong to the HP LaserJet M1120 MFP?
No. The M1120 is the clearest public association, not a complete identification of every copy.
Can I download hpmproduct.dll by itself?
Do not do that. An isolated DLL can contain malware, have the wrong architecture, or fail because the real problem is a missing dependency. Reinstall the parent HP package from HP’s official support page.
Should I put the file in System32?
No. The application’s installation directory is normally the correct location. System32 is not a general DLL repair folder.
What if the error appears after uninstalling the printer?
Look for an HP startup item, scheduled task, shortcut, or remaining application. If you no longer use the printer, remove the orphaned software reference instead of replacing the DLL.
Recommended Free Tools
What if the file exists but Windows still says it is missing?
“The specified module could not be found” may refer to a dependency. Reinstall the complete HP package, check the application event log, and verify that the package supports your Windows release.
Is the file safe?
The filename alone cannot establish that. Check the path, digital signature, installer provenance, and antivirus history. A file inside a legitimate HP installation is more credible than one found in a temporary or unrelated folder.
