Microsoft describes Windows Photo Gallery as a Vista feature for browsing and viewing photos and videos. The exact path, version, size, and architecture of PhotoLibraryMain.dll can vary by Windows build. There is no verified current Microsoft standalone download for this DLL.
First, identify the product and Windows version
Before replacing anything, record the exact error and the operating system.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
winver. - Press Enter.
- Note whether the computer runs Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 10, or Windows 11.
- Check the error again and copy the filename exactly.
Some third-party error messages say that PhotoLibraryMain.dll is missing, corrupted, cannot be located, or could not be loaded. These are examples rather than an official Microsoft error catalogue.

If the error says:
Windows Live Photo Gallery encountered an error loading WLXPhotoLibraryMain.dll and can’t start.
then you are troubleshooting Windows Live Photo Gallery, not the Vista file. Microsoft records this error with code 0x800736b1.
Also identify the program that displays the error. It may be:
- Windows Photo Gallery
- Windows Live Photo Gallery
- Windows Movie Maker
- Another old application that bundled or called a Photo Gallery component
A Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation does not normally include the Vista Photo Gallery component. If an old application displays this error on a newer system, the application’s own installation, compatibility, or dependencies are more likely to be involved.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the parent application
A DLL is usually only one part of an application. Copying a replacement file rarely repairs the installation that loads it.
Windows Vista Photo Gallery
If the computer is running Vista and the file belonged to the built-in Photo Gallery:

- Back up your photos and other personal files.
- Disconnect unnecessary external devices.
- Install applicable updates that are available for that legacy system.
- Run System File Checker as described in the next section.
- If SFC cannot repair the component, use the original Vista installation media for an in-place repair installation.
- Restart the computer and test Photo Gallery.
Do not copy PhotoLibraryMain.dll manually into System32. Vista component files may be protected and serviced through Windows component storage.
Windows Live Photo Gallery
If the filename includes the WLX prefix and the program was installed separately:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Find Windows Essentials or the related Photo Gallery entry.
- Select it and choose Uninstall/Change.
- Select the repair option if one is offered.
- Restart Windows.
- If repair is unavailable, reinstall the matching Windows Essentials package from trusted installation media.
Windows Essentials is discontinued and unsupported. Do not obtain its installer or an individual DLL from an unverified download page. If no trusted installer remains, replacing the application with a supported photo program is safer than rebuilding an unsupported stack.
An old third-party application
If another program names the DLL:
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair, then test the program.
- If there is no repair option, uninstall the application.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from the developer’s official installer.
- Right-click its shortcut and select Run as administrator once for testing.
The complete application installer is the correct source for an application DLL. Reinstalling the parent program remains the definitive fix when the file belongs to that program.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine an old DLL, especially when the file is part of discontinued software.
Windows Security
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries created when the Photo Gallery error began.
- Expand a detection to view its original path and action.
- Restore the file only if you have confirmed the original application, location, and digital signature.
Microsoft warns that restoring a detected file can expose the computer if the detection was genuine. If the file was located in an unrelated folder, a temporary directory, or a random download location, do not restore it. Remove the application that created it and run a full scan instead.

After restoring a legitimate quarantined file, repair or reinstall the parent application. That replaces the component from a known installation rather than relying on a possibly incomplete restored copy.
Fix 3: Repair Windows system files
Use the following procedure on supported Windows versions such as Windows 10 and Windows 11. Open the commands from an administrator Command Prompt.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store where supported, and SFC checks protected system files against that store.
On Vista, DISM /RestoreHealth is not necessarily available in this form. Use the SFC procedure appropriate to that release and the original installation media or servicing packages when required. Do not assume a Windows 10 or Windows 11 command works unchanged on Vista.

- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
- Test Photo Gallery or the affected application.
System Restore does not restore personal documents. It can reverse selected software, registry, driver, and system-file changes. If no suitable restore point exists, return to repairing or reinstalling the parent application.

Fix 5: Check whether a dependency is missing
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that PhotoLibraryMain.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found that file but failed to load one of its dependencies.
Check the file and application location:
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Select Open File Location.
- Look for the application’s own Photo Gallery directory.
- Do not assume that a copy in
System32is correct.
A legacy application can also fail because of a missing side-by-side assembly, incompatible runtime, damaged component store, or wrong architecture.
To check Windows logs:
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error created at the time of the failed launch.
- Also check Windows Logs > System.
- Note references to side-by-side errors, dependent DLLs, application crashes, or “bad image” messages.
If Event Viewer identifies another missing module, repair that dependency instead of repeatedly replacing PhotoLibraryMain.dll. Do not install Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, or graphics drivers unless the actual error identifies one of those components.
Fix 6: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit Photo Gallery application on 64-bit Windows needs its matching 32-bit dependencies. Installing an x64 DLL into a 32-bit application directory, or copying a 32-bit file into a 64-bit system directory, can cause:

The correct repair is to reinstall the complete application or Windows component for the appropriate architecture. Do not manually move files between System32, SysWOW64, and an application folder. Those directories are not interchangeable repair locations.

If you are updating related hardware or software drivers while diagnosing a broader application problem, install them only from the hardware manufacturer or Windows Update. Does regsvr32 fix photolibrarymain.dll?
Usually, no.

Is Photo Gallery still supported?
