“ This application failed to start because timebandit.dll was not found.” You may also see “Error loading timebandit.dll,” “The file timebandit.dll is missing or corrupted,” or “Failed to load timebandit.dll.”
The 60-second answer
timebandit.dll is not a Windows system file, Microsoft runtime, driver, or DirectX component. It is an application DLL associated with older Steinberg audio software, especially Cubase VST and some Nuendo-era installations.
The safest fix is to identify the program named in the error, check its quarantine history, and repair or reinstall that exact legacy Steinberg application from its original installer or Steinberg’s unsupported-product archive. Do not download an isolated copy and place it in System32.
This file is generally expected by an old 32-bit audio host. A 64-bit replacement is not interchangeable with a 32-bit DLL, and registering the file with regsvr32 usually does not repair this type of plug-in.

What is timebandit.dll?
timebandit.dll is a third-party application component used by older Steinberg audio software. Public historical discussions associate TimeBandit with audio time-stretching, but there is no current Steinberg technical specification that documents every function or product containing the file.
The clearest associations are:
- Cubase VST installations
- Older Cubase VST/32 variants
- Some legacy Nuendo installations
- Other historical Steinberg audio packages that included related processing technology
The exact build can vary by product and installer. File catalogues commonly report a 32-bit DLL and identify one build with version 1.0.5.0, a size of roughly 172 KB, and a copyright year, but those details are not a universal specification. Use them only as clues when comparing files from the same legitimate installer.
The application that installed the DLL is the authority. If the error names Cubase, repair Cubase. If it names Nuendo, repair Nuendo. If no program is named, inspect old audio software installed on the computer rather than searching Windows folders first.
Why the file goes missing
The most likely causes are:
- An incomplete or damaged Cubase or Nuendo installation
- A partial copy of an old program from another computer or backup
- Antivirus quarantine or deletion
- An incompatible product variant or architecture
- A damaged installer, ISO, or extracted archive
- A modified, unofficial, or incomplete software package
- A later compatibility or licensing failure that appears after the missing-file error
- General Windows corruption, which is less likely
A missing timebandit.dll message does not mean Windows itself lost a required system file. It normally means the legacy audio application cannot find one of its own files.

Fix 1: Identify the parent application
Before changing files, identify which program is requesting the DLL.
Check the error window
Read the title bar and the text around the error. Note whether it mentions Cubase, Nuendo, a project file, or a particular executable.
Check the shortcut
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read the Target field.
- Select Open File Location if available.
- Note the folder containing the program executable.
Do not start by browsing to C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. An application DLL normally belongs beside the legacy program or in one of its original plug-in directories.
Check installed applications
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Cubase, Nuendo, Steinberg, or the program named in the error.
On Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Search for the affected audio application.
If the program is no longer listed, look for its original installer, backup, disc, or ISO. Do not assume that a similarly named current product can replace an old Cubase VST installation.

Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove an old application DLL because legacy software may be uncommon, packed unusually, or modified by an installer.
Windows Security
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions for
timebandit.dllor the Cubase/Nuendo installation. - Open an entry only if you recognize the affected program and obtained it from a legitimate source.
- Restore the file only when its provenance is clear.
- Run a full scan of the complete application folder.
Do not create a blanket exclusion for the application directory. If the file is repeatedly quarantined, stop and verify the installer and its digital trust rather than disabling protection.
If the original file cannot be restored safely, reinstall the complete application from original media. Restoring a single file is less reliable than rebuilding the installation that supplied it.
Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the matching Steinberg application
This is the most likely permanent fix.
Steinberg’s unsupported-product archive includes historical Cubase VST Windows installers and updates, including separate product variants and a full Windows installer image. Choose the product that matches the application named in the error. Preserve project files, presets, licences, and backups before removing anything.

- Locate the original installer.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Choose Repair, Modify, or the equivalent option.
- Keep the original installation directory unless you have a documented reason to change it.
- Allow the installer to restore all program files.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the original application directly, not an old project shortcut.
If repair is unavailable
- Back up project folders, custom presets, and licence information.
- Close the audio application and any related background processes.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the affected Steinberg application.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the matching original installer as administrator.
- Install the same product family and architecture as before.
- Restart again.
- Open the application before opening a project.
If the installer is an ISO, mount it in Windows and run the installer from the mounted drive. Do not extract an individual DLL and copy it into a Windows folder.
A successful repair usually means the program starts without the missing-file message. If the error changes to “entry point not found,” “bad image,” or another missing dependency, the file may now exist but be the wrong build, damaged, or dependent on additional legacy components.
Fix 4: Confirm 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Older Cubase VST and related applications are generally 32-bit. Windows 11 and Windows 10 can run many 32-bit applications through WOW64, but a 32-bit process cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit process cannot use a 32-bit DLL as a substitute.
Microsoft explains this behavior in its 32-bit applications and WOW64 documentation.

Check the following:
- Use the original 32-bit Cubase VST, VST/32, or matching Nuendo package.
- Keep the original program files together.
- Do not replace the file with one taken from a newer 64-bit installation.
- Do not copy a DLL from another computer unless it came from the same original installer and matching product build.
- Avoid moving old plug-ins into arbitrary modern VST folders.
A compatibility mode setting can help an old host launch, but it cannot convert a 64-bit component into a 32-bit one. If the application is essential for one old project, use a separate compatible Windows environment and keep the project backed up.
Fix 5: Check the installer or backup for the original file
If the application was copied from another disk, the copy may have omitted plug-ins or shared program files.
- Locate the original installation media or backup.
- Search within that media for
timebandit.dll. - Compare the file’s location with the original application directory.
- Copy it only from the same legitimate installer into the matching application folder.
- Scan the complete restored installation.
- Start the host application again.
Do not use a file from a random DLL catalogue, an unrelated machine, or a system directory. A replacement can have the wrong architecture, a different build, altered contents, or malware. It may also hide the real problem, such as a broken installation or missing dependency.
There is no confirmed universal checksum or standalone official download for this file. The safe source is the original Steinberg installer, a verified backup, or a file restored from legitimate antivirus quarantine.
Fix 6: Do not register this DLL with regsvr32
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft documents the command in its regsvr32 reference.
There is no evidence that timebandit.dll is a COM or ActiveX component requiring registration. Running a command such as this is therefore usually irrelevant:
regsvr32 timebandit.dll
A successful registration message would not prove that Cubase or Nuendo can load the correct audio component. If the DLL is a plug-in or private application library, it normally needs to be in the location expected by its host, not registered globally.
Fix 7: Do not install unrelated runtimes first
Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, .NET, and Windows optional features do not normally reinstall timebandit.dll.

You can check optional Windows components, but do not expect them to restore this application file:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review the enabled features.
- Leave features unchanged unless the Steinberg documentation for your exact version requires one.
If the error concerns only timebandit.dll, repair the parent application first. Install a legacy runtime only when the installer or a later dependency error specifically identifies it.
Fix 8: Repair Windows components only when Windows has broader problems
Use Windows repair commands when other Windows components are also failing, system files are corrupted, or Windows features are behaving abnormally. These commands normally do not recreate a third-party Cubase plug-in.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish, then run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. Detailed instructions are available in Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance.

Restart Windows and test the audio application. If the DLL is still missing, return to the Steinberg installer; Windows repair is not a substitute for reinstalling a third-party program.
Manually hunting through component versions and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed is time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it finds; its repair functions require the full version, and reinstalling the affected Steinberg application remains the definitive fix for this DLL.
Fix 9: Ignore drivers unless there is a separate audio-device problem
A missing timebandit.dll is not normally a sound-card driver error. Update drivers only if Device Manager also shows a warning or the application reports a separate audio hardware problem.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the affected audio device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Do not uninstall a working audio interface driver merely because this DLL is missing. Driver changes will not recreate an application plug-in.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Finding the correct driver manually can mean checking hardware identifiers, vendor packages, and several outdated versions. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for stale drivers and show the detected issues; the full version performs the driver installation, but it is not a replacement for repairing the Steinberg host.
What if only one old project needs Cubase?
Install the matching legacy application in an isolated, compatible environment rather than changing a modern production computer.

Current Cubase versions are not guaranteed to open very old Cubase VST projects or load 32-bit plug-ins directly. If the project opens successfully in the old host, export tracks or stems to a modern format and migrate gradually.
If the software is unofficial, cracked, or modified, obtain a legitimate installer. Missing files can be caused by an altered or incomplete package, and adding an isolated DLL will not make that installation trustworthy.
FAQ
Is timebandit.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with older third-party Steinberg audio software and should not normally be placed in System32 or SysWOW64.
Is timebandit.dll malware?
The filename alone does not establish that. Check its location, installer provenance, signature, and antivirus results. A file restored from a legitimate Steinberg installer is more trustworthy than one downloaded separately.
Should I download timebandit.dll from a DLL website?
No. The file may be malicious, corrupted, the wrong architecture, or the wrong build. Reinstall the original Cubase or Nuendo application instead.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not as the first response. There is no evidence that these Microsoft packages normally install timebandit.dll. Install a dependency only when the exact application or a later error identifies it.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why does regsvr32 fail?
The DLL may not expose a registration entry point because it is an application plug-in rather than a COM component. Put the correct file in the application’s original directory and repair the host instead.
Can a 64-bit DLL replace it?
No. Match the architecture required by the host. Old Cubase VST and related applications generally require their original 32-bit components.
What if reinstalling does not work?
Check quarantine again, verify that the installer matches the original product variant, and look for a new error such as a bad image, missing entry point, licensing failure, or another dependency. At that point, use an isolated compatible environment or migrate the project from the legacy host.
