Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallchxem.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows IME component, not a game DLL or a normal Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime file. If Windows says it is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, restore the Windows component through servicing and language-feature repair instead of downloading a replacement.
What this file actually does
ChxEM.dll is associated with Microsoft’s built-in Input Method Editor system. Windows IMEs provide the input components needed for complex-language text entry, including Chinese, Japanese, and Korean input.
A public analysis identifies the file in this location:
C:WindowsSystem32InputMethodSHAREDChxEM.dll
The analyzed file is identified as a Microsoft Corporation component belonging to Microsoft Windows Operating System and signed by Microsoft. The exact path, architecture, version, and contents can vary with the Windows release, servicing level, and installed language features.

The filename may appear when an application starts because Windows is loading an IME-related component in the background. That does not prove the application itself installed the file or that a particular game is responsible. Public error listings do not reliably identify one specific game or program as the cause.
Causes matched to symptoms
| Symptom | Most likely cause | Best first repair |
|---|---|---|
| “chxem.dll is missing” | Deleted or corrupted Windows component | Windows Update, DISM, then SFC |
| “The specified module could not be found” | The DLL or one of its dependencies cannot load | Repair Windows components and the language feature |
| “Not designed to run on Windows” | Wrong architecture, damaged file, or mismatched manual replacement | Remove the replacement and repair Windows |
| Error began after removing Chinese input | Missing or incomplete language/IME feature | Reinstall the relevant language and keyboard |
| Error appeared after an update | Failed servicing or damaged component store | Update troubleshooting, DISM, SFC, or System Restore |
| Antivirus detected the file | Quarantine or false positive | Check Protection history and verify the genuine file |
| Error returns after repairs | Storage, malware, or recurring servicing corruption | Scan Windows, inspect disk health, or use recovery options |
“Specified module could not be found” is especially misleading. Windows may be unable to find chxem.dll, or it may find that file but fail to load a dependency required by it.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Windows Update is the safest first repair because it can restore system components using files that match your Windows build and architecture.
Windows 11
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
Windows 10
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Open Update & Security.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates and restart.
Try the application again after restarting. If the error remains, continue with component repair rather than copying a DLL into the application folder.
Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. The update menus still apply to existing installations, but moving to a supported Windows version may be necessary when servicing itself is no longer able to repair the installation.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then uses that repaired store to check and replace protected system files. Run DISM first.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until SFC reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the application again.
A successful result may say that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and repaired them. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, restart and run the DISM command again before repeating SFC.

The manual process can involve several long scans and gives you limited visibility into which related components are still inconsistent. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying Windows repair issues and show what needs attention, while its repair functions require the full version; it is optional, and DISM plus SFC remain the built-in repair path.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix 3: Reinstall the relevant language and IME feature
This is the most relevant repair if the problem started after removing Chinese input, changing keyboard layouts, or upgrading Windows.
Add or repair a language in Windows 11
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Choose Time & language.
- Select Language & region.
- Select Add a language.
- Search for the required language, such as Chinese Simplified or Chinese Traditional.
- Select the language and choose Next.
- Leave the required language features selected.
- Select Install.
- Restart Windows and test the affected application.
If the language is already installed, note your current keyboard and display-language settings before removing it. Then:
- Open Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
- Expand the language entry.
- Select Remove.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Add a language.
- Install the language and its keyboard features again.
- Restart once more.
Do not remove a language if you are unsure which keyboard or display language your account uses. Reinstalling the wrong feature can change the available input layouts without fixing the underlying component.
After reinstalling the language feature, run DISM and SFC again if the error continues.

Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a system file after a detection or an interrupted update. Do not restore a quarantined file solely because its name matches the error.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review entries involving
ChxEM.dllor the InputMethod folder. - Check the file location, detection details, and action taken.
Restore the file only when you can confirm that it is the genuine Microsoft-signed component in the expected Windows directory. If there is any doubt, leave it quarantined and run Windows Update, DISM, and SFC so Windows can restore a trusted copy.
Run a full scan from Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Full scan if the file appeared in an unexpected folder or the problem keeps returning.

Fix 5: Remove an unsafe manual replacement
Do not download chxem.dll from a random DLL download site. A downloaded file may contain malware, belong to a different Windows build, use the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture, have incompatible dependencies, or lack a valid Microsoft signature. It may also hide the real component-store problem without repairing it.
Do not copy the file into:
- A game directory
- The application’s installation folder
C:WindowsSystem32without verificationC:WindowsSysWOW64without understanding the architecture involved
On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system components, while SysWOW64 contains many 32-bit system components. The folder names are confusing, and placing a file in the wrong location can create more loader errors. The correct copy must match the Windows build, architecture, language configuration, signature, and dependency set.
If you already copied a replacement manually, remove that unauthorised copy only if you can identify it as the replacement and it is outside the protected Windows component location. Then use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, and language-feature repair.
The safe sources are Windows Update, Windows language settings, Windows recovery tools, and Microsoft’s own installation or repair media.
Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 as the first repair
regsvr32 registers a DLL by calling its DllRegisterServer entry point. It does not recreate a missing file, repair the Windows component store, or restore a missing language feature.
One public analysis reports that a particular ChxEM.dll sample exports DllRegisterServer, so it would be inaccurate to say the command can never load this file. However, Microsoft does not provide a general repair procedure that tells users to manually register ChxEM.dll.
Use regsvr32 only when Microsoft, the computer manufacturer, or a qualified administrator specifically directs you to register an existing, genuine file with the matching architecture. If the file is absent, registration cannot help.

Fix 7: Check the application, drivers, and hardware path
Although no specific game or application can be reliably tied to chxem.dll, an application may expose the error while Windows is loading shared input components.
First update the affected application from its official publisher, then test it again. Do not place a downloaded DLL beside its executable.
Recommended Free Tools
You can also check Device Manager for related system problems:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards and Human Interface Devices.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click a device with a warning and choose Properties.
- Read the status on the General tab.
- Use Update driver only when Windows or the hardware manufacturer provides a matching driver.
- Restart after any driver installation.
A keyboard driver is not normally the source of ChxEM.dll, so Device Manager is a secondary check, not the main repair. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for stale driver versions and reduce the manual work of identifying them, but its driver installation requires the full version and updating a driver is not a substitute for repairing Windows IME components.
Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent change
If the error began immediately after an update, cleanup utility, language-pack change, or driver installation, System Restore may return system files and configuration to an earlier state.
- Press Win + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Next, review the affected programs, and choose Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally preserves personal files, but it can roll back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs. If no suitable restore point exists, continue with Windows recovery instead.
Fix 9: Perform a Windows repair reinstall
If DISM, SFC, language repair, and System Restore fail, Windows itself may need a repair reinstall.
On Windows 11, check whether this option is available:
Best Value
- A plug-and-play USB connection with Low-profile keys give you a quiet, comfortable typing experience
- Simple Wired USB Connection,You will enjoy a comfortable and quiet typing experience
- The keyboard for business and office working is the budget-friendly keyboard that is built for longer use
- Low profile keys for a more comfortable and quiet keystroke, desktop-centric design, splash resistant
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings when the option is supported on the installation.
Back up important data before any major recovery operation. If the repair option is unavailable or fails, use Microsoft installation media for an in-place repair, or consult a technician if the system also shows disk errors, repeated corruption, or malware symptoms.

Is chxem.dll a genuine Windows file?
Yes. It is associated with Microsoft’s Windows IME components and is identified in public file analysis as Microsoft-signed Windows software.
Do I need Chinese input installed?
Not always. The component is part of shared IME functionality, but reinstalling the relevant Chinese language and keyboard feature is appropriate if the feature was removed, damaged, or interrupted during installation.
Is chxem.dll part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
There is no verified evidence that those redistributables supply this file. Installing them is not the normal repair.
Should I download the DLL manually?
No. Restore it through Windows Update, language-feature installation, DISM, SFC, or Windows recovery.
What if the message names a game?
The game may simply be the program running when Windows tries to load the component. There is no reliable evidence that one particular game is the general cause of this filename error.
Can regsvr32 fix the problem?
Not as a general missing-file repair. It only registers an existing DLL when that DLL supports registration and the correct architecture and guidance are available.
What is the correct final test?
Restart Windows after the repair, open the application that produced the message, and test the affected keyboard or language input. If the error returns, inspect Protection history, repeat component repair, and consider System Restore or a Windows repair reinstall rather than trying another downloaded DLL.
