The best gaming-PC setup is not the one with the most apps. For most Windows 10 and Windows 11 players, start with Steam, the correct software for your GPU, 7-Zip, and—if you play socially—Discord. Add OBS Studio, monitoring overlays, fan-control tools, or extra launchers only when you have a specific reason.
This guide is focused on software that was relevant to a 2025 gaming-PC setup, with availability and project status checked against the supplied August 2026 research. Features can vary by Windows version, hardware, driver, game, and anti-cheat system.

Install these first
Steam: the broadest PC-gaming starting point
Steam handles game installation, updates, cloud saves where supported, controller configuration, Big Picture mode, community guides, Workshop content, and built-in file verification. It is the most broadly useful launcher, but it is not a requirement for every PC game.
Use Steam’s file-verification feature when a game crashes or appears to have missing or corrupted files. Cloud saves are convenient, but they are not a substitute for independent backups. Workshop support and mod behavior also vary by game.

Steam has a substantial background ecosystem and update footprint. Disable its automatic startup if you want a leaner desktop, and remember that some games start a separate publisher launcher anyway.
Install only the GPU software that matches your hardware
Do not install every GPU utility. Choose the branch that matches your graphics card.
- GeForce: NVIDIA App provides driver delivery, GPU settings, game and application profiles, capture, and access to NVIDIA features. Its recommendations are starting points, not guaranteed best settings. Laptop owners may need drivers from the laptop maker when OEM validation matters.
- Radeon: AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition combines drivers, game management, metrics, capture, profiles, and tuning. Options such as FSR or frame-generation features depend on the Radeon generation, driver, and game. A laptop may work better with the manufacturer’s driver package.
- Intel Arc: Arc owners should use Intel’s current software and driver downloads from the Intel Download Center. The application name and available features have changed over time, so use Intel’s current hardware-specific page.
Windows Update is appropriate for ordinary system updates, but GPU drivers should normally come from the GPU manufacturer or your computer maker. Avoid generic “all drivers in one click” programs. If a new driver makes one game worse, roll back to the previous known-good driver rather than adding another updater.
Discord: useful, but not mandatory
Discord remains a practical choice for voice chat, group text, communities, and coordinating multiplayer sessions. Basic voice and text features do not require Nitro.
Give Discord only the microphone and notification permissions you want. If a game crashes, loses focus, develops input problems, or shows unusual frame pacing, disable Discord’s overlay first. Hardware acceleration can also be worth testing if the client behaves poorly.
7-Zip: the utility you will eventually need
7-Zip opens ZIP, 7z, and other common archives used for mods, patches, drivers, and downloaded tools. Download it from the official project site.

Archive software does not make the contents trustworthy. Treat an executable extracted from an unknown mod or mirror as potentially unsafe, and obtain mods from their official project page or an established repository.
HWiNFO: detailed information when something seems wrong
HWiNFO is best for identifying your CPU, GPU, memory configuration, SSD health information, temperatures, power readings, and possible throttling. It is more useful for diagnosis than for casual “optimization.”

Use the readings to compare behavior under a known workload and consult the component or laptop maker’s specifications when available.
Best free software for recording and streaming
OBS Studio
OBS Studio is the strongest general-purpose free option for recording and streaming. It supports scenes, game capture, multiple audio sources, webcams, platform-independent workflows, and hardware encoders where supported. Download it from the official site or its official releases.
OBS offers more control than Windows Game Bar or GPU capture, but it also has a steeper learning curve. Begin with the automatic configuration wizard and choose Optimize for recording or Optimize for streaming according to your main use.
- Add a Game Capture source for a supported game.
- Add Audio Input Capture for your microphone.
- Confirm that the audio mixer responds to both game and microphone input.
- Record 30–60 seconds locally before attempting a livestream.
- Play the file back and check image quality, frame pacing, game audio, and microphone volume.
Do not assume that OBS will automatically deliver a good 4K stream. The practical result depends on your upload connection, platform limits, resolution, frame rate, hardware encoder, and GPU headroom.

Common OBS problems
- Black Game Capture: Try Window Capture or Display Capture, run OBS and the game at compatible privilege levels, and check whether the game or anti-cheat system blocks capture.
- Stuttering recordings: Lower the resolution or frame rate, try hardware encoding, and check whether the GPU is already saturated.
- Poor microphone audio: Adjust gain and use filters rather than simply raising system volume.
- Audio desynchronization: Check device sample rates and make another short test recording.
- Laptop capture trouble: Confirm that OBS is assigned to the GPU associated with the game when hybrid graphics are in use.
For occasional clips, Windows Game Bar or NVIDIA/AMD capture may be simpler. Those tools are tied more closely to the relevant Windows or GPU ecosystem, while OBS is the better choice when you need scenes, multiple sources, or repeatable recording workflows.
Best performance-monitoring tools
MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner Statistics Server
MSI Afterburner can display FPS, frametime, temperatures, clocks, and utilization in games, and it also offers optional fan control and GPU tuning. Its on-screen display normally relies on the bundled RivaTuner Statistics Server.
MSI warns users to download Afterburner from MSI or Guru3D; fraudulent sites have distributed modified installers. Start with monitoring only. Record baseline behavior, change one setting at a time, and revert the profile if you see crashes, visual corruption, or driver resets.
For a custom fan curve, MSI documents this path: Settings → Fan → Enable user-defined software automatic fan control, then adjust the curve nodes and select Apply. On laptops, fan behavior may be locked by firmware, so the option can install successfully while providing little or no control.
Overclocking is optional, not a guaranteed FPS upgrade, and can reduce stability or increase heat. Do not use it as the first response to poor game performance.
Fan Control
Fan Control is an enthusiast tool for compatible desktop systems. It supports sensor-based curves, multiple temperature sources, profiles, and mixed sensors. The project documents Windows 10 and Windows 11 support, but laptop compatibility is generally poor because many laptops do not expose their fan interfaces to third-party software.

As of the supplied 2026 research, the project recommends version 238 or later after changes to its hardware-access approach following Windows Defender detection of the older WinRing0 component. Release history is active, so check the project’s current release notes before installing.
Do not run multiple programs that control the same fans. Keep BIOS or motherboard fan control as a recovery baseline, and remember that legitimate low-level monitoring tools can still interact badly with security software, anti-cheat systems, or motherboard utilities.

winget install Rem0o.FanControlIf no fans or sensors appear, the hardware may simply be unsupported. Use the laptop or motherboard manufacturer’s control software instead of forcing an unsupported configuration.
Useful screenshot and Windows utilities
ShareX
ShareX is an optional upgrade over Windows’ Snipping Tool and Game Bar. It supports screenshots, screen recording, GIFs, annotations, OCR, and automated sharing, making it particularly useful for documenting bugs or creating guides.
Microsoft PowerToys
Microsoft PowerToys is not a gaming-performance booster, but it can improve a gaming PC used for ordinary work. PowerToys Run launches applications quickly, Always On Top keeps a reference window visible, Text Extractor copies text from screenshots, FancyZones manages multi-monitor layouts, and Keyboard Manager supports remapping.

- Epic Games Store: Install it for Epic purchases and games that require it. Promotions and free-game availability are time-sensitive.
- GOG Galaxy: Useful for GOG’s library and optional multi-platform integration. Many GOG games can be installed through standalone installers without relying on Galaxy.
- Xbox app for PC: Install it for PC Game Pass and Microsoft’s PC gaming ecosystem. The app is free; access to subscription catalogues is a separate paid service.
Disable automatic startup for launchers you use occasionally. Too many clients running in the background can lengthen startup and create more overlay conflicts.
Overlays, anti-cheat, and laptop limitations
A modern gaming PC may have overlays from Steam, Discord, NVIDIA App, AMD Adrenalin, Xbox Game Bar, MSI Afterburner/RTSS, and a game-specific launcher. When a game crashes, loses focus, shows a black screen, or develops unusual frame pacing, disable overlays one at a time rather than uninstalling everything.
Hardware monitors and fan tools may use low-level drivers or interfaces. Some anti-cheat systems can react to those components even when the software is legitimate. Check the current guidance for the specific game or anti-cheat provider, and do not assume universal compatibility.
Laptops are especially different from desktops. Firmware often controls fan curves, GPU power limits, hybrid-graphics routing, performance modes, keyboard lighting, and other functions. The laptop maker’s control center is frequently a better choice than a desktop-oriented utility.

- Generic driver-updater suites: Use GPU-maker, PC-maker, and Windows Update channels instead.
- Registry cleaners and RAM boosters: They do not provide a reliable gaming benefit and can create new problems.
- Vague “game optimizers”: Avoid software that promises automatic FPS gains without explaining exactly what it changes.
- Fake Afterburner downloads: Use MSI or Guru3D only.
- Unverified mod executables: Obtain mods from the project’s official page or a well-established repository.
- Overlapping tuning tools: Multiple fan controllers, overlays, or GPU-tuning programs increase conflict risk.
Windows’ built-in Storage settings and each launcher’s uninstall or file-verification tools should be your default cleanup path. Deleting shader caches, saves, or mod folders indiscriminately can create more problems than it solves.
A safe installation order
- Install Windows updates.
- Install the correct GPU driver from the GPU manufacturer or computer maker.
- Install Steam or the launcher required by your first game.
- Install 7-Zip.
- Add Discord if you need external voice chat.
- Add HWiNFO if you need hardware or temperature diagnostics.
- Install OBS, Afterburner/RTSS, ShareX, or Fan Control only when their specific use justifies them.
- Disable unnecessary startup entries and test one game before enabling several utilities at boot.
For drivers, fan curves, voltage changes, or GPU profiles, preserve existing profiles and consider creating a restore point first. Restart when a driver installer requests it.
