The Forest supports dedicated-server hosting through a server tool distributed via Steam and SteamCMD. You can either rent a managed game server or install the server on an always-on Windows machine. For most small groups, managed hosting is simpler; self-hosting offers more control and avoids a recurring hosting fee if you already have suitable hardware, network access, and the time to maintain it.
This guide covers both options, then walks through a Windows SteamCMD installation, configuration, networking, security, backups, updates, and the most common connection failures.
Dedicated hosting versus ordinary multiplayer
Peer-to-peer multiplayer usually depends on a player launching the game and remaining available as the host. A dedicated server runs separately from the game client, so friends can join the world even when the owner is not playing.
Dedicated hosting is worthwhile when your group plays at different times, wants a persistent save, or needs predictable administration. It may be unnecessary if the same few people only play together occasionally.

| Option | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Home self-hosting | No hosting bill, full file access, complete configuration control | You manage hardware, power, updates, backups, firewall rules, and port forwarding |
| Managed game hosting | Fast deployment, control panel, provider networking, and often automated backups and restarts | Recurring cost, provider restrictions, and possible slot minimums |
| Generic VPS | Flexible operating system and administrative control | You install and maintain everything, and compatibility may be unclear |
What you need before starting
For a home server
- An always-on machine with sufficient CPU, memory, storage, and upload bandwidth. Available setup documentation does not establish a current official hardware minimum, so test your intended player count rather than relying on an invented specification.
- Direct access to the server files and command line.
- A stable private LAN address, preferably assigned through a DHCP reservation.
- Router access for port forwarding and operating-system firewall access.
- A backup location outside the live server directory.
Hosting from home may not work if your ISP uses carrier-grade NAT, or if your connection has double NAT or restrictive inbound-firewall policies.
For rented hosting
Confirm that the provider specifically supports The Forest dedicated server. A generic “Steam game server” product does not automatically support this game. Check for:
- File-manager or FTP access
server.cfgediting- Save backups and restoration
- Scheduled restarts
- DDoS protection
- A location near most players
- Custom ports and Steam server-token support
- Clear cancellation, refund, and save-export policies
Provider features, supported builds, slot minimums, and prices change. Do not treat old provider-directory prices as current; the historical directory contains entries updated as early as 2018–2023.
Install the dedicated server with SteamCMD on Windows
The clearest self-hosting path is Windows-based. Download SteamCMD from Valve’s SteamCMD reference rather than using an unofficial mirror.

Configure server.cfg
A commonly documented Windows path is:
C:Users<USERNAME>AppDataLocalLowSKSTheForestDedicatedServerdsserver.cfg
Some Linux-style deployments instead use a path resembling ~/.config/unity3d/SKS/TheForestDedicatedServer/ds. Use the configuration generated by your installation rather than assuming every provider uses the same location.
A minimal example is:
serverIP 192.168.1.50
serverSteamPort 8766
serverGamePort 27015
serverQueryPort 27016
serverName My Forest Server
serverPlayers 8
serverPassword ChangeThisPassword
serverPasswordAdmin UseASeparateAdminPassword
enableVAC on
serverAutoSaveInterval 15
Do not blindly replace the entire generated file with an old internet example. Preserve newer entries and check the syntax supported by your installed build.
Important settings
serverIP- Use the server machine’s private LAN address, such as
192.168.1.50, when the machine is behind a home router. Do not normally enter the public internet address here. Reserve this LAN address in the router so it does not change after a reboot. serverSteamPort8766is a common example for Steam communication.serverGamePort27015is a common example for game traffic.serverQueryPort27016is a common example for querying and listing.serverName- The name players use to identify the server.
serverPlayers- Older examples commonly use eight players, but do not assume that is a universal current maximum. Confirm what your installed build accepts.
serverPassword- Use a private player password to reduce unwanted access.
serverPasswordAdmin- Use a separate administrator password. Never reuse the player password.
enableVAConenables Valve Anti-Cheat where supported. VAC is not a replacement for passwords, moderation, backups, or firewall security.serverAutoSaveInterval- The interval is expressed in minutes in documented examples. A value of
15is commonly shown, but independent backups are still essential.
Other documented settings can control difficulty, the initial game type, save slot, tree regrowth, building destruction, enemy behavior, cheats, logging, and custom save locations. Their behavior and availability may vary by server build, so change one setting at a time and restart the server to test it.

AppIDs and Steam server tokens
Do not mix up these identifiers:
- Game AppID:
242760 - Dedicated-server installation AppID:
556450
If the deployment requires a Steam server token, create one through Steam Game Server Account Management. Steam discussions identify 242760 as the game AppID for token management, while SteamCMD installation commonly uses 556450.
Depending on the deployment, the token may be placed in server.cfg:
serverSteamAccount <token>
or supplied at launch:
-serversteamaccount <token>
Never publish a token in a screenshot, repository, or support request. If it is exposed, revoke it and create a replacement.
Authentication behavior has varied across historical builds and launch methods. Anonymous SteamCMD installation and -nosteamclient are commonly documented, but ownership, token, and version-mismatch reports also exist. If authentication fails, follow the current instructions supplied by the server build or host and test the correct token and launch method rather than assuming anonymous login always works.
Forward ports and allow the firewall
Using the example configuration above, a typical port-forwarding table is:
| Purpose | Example port |
|---|---|
| Steam communication | UDP 8766 |
| Game communication | UDP 27015 |
| Query communication | UDP 27016 |
These are common examples, not immutable requirements. Some guides use alternative game and query ports, especially when multiple servers run on the same network. Forward the values actually configured in your server, and verify the protocol with your host or deployment instructions because community documentation is not completely consistent about every protocol combination.

- Reserve the server’s private LAN address in your router.
- Forward the configured ports to that private address.
- Allow
TheForestDedicatedServer.exethrough the operating-system firewall. - Do not forward unrelated ports.
- Check for double NAT and carrier-grade NAT if outside players cannot connect.
The server configuration generally uses the private address, while players outside your network use the public address or server listing.
Start and test the server
Use:
cd /d "C:ServersTheForest"
TheForestDedicatedServer.exe -batchmode -nographics -nosteamclient
If supported by your installed build, -showlogs can help during troubleshooting:
TheForestDedicatedServer.exe -batchmode -nographics -nosteamclient -showlogs
Wait for initialization and inspect the console or logs for errors. Then:
- Search for the name in The Forest’s dedicated-server browser.
- If necessary, open Steam and choose View → Game Servers → Favorites → Add a Server.
- Enter the public address and the relevant configured port according to the server’s listing behavior.
- Test with another player.
- Test from a genuinely external network, such as a mobile hotspot. A client on the same home network may not reveal forwarding or NAT problems.
Server discovery has historically been inconsistent: a server may appear on the LAN but not in the internet list. Treat successful external joining as the meaningful test.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Checks to make |
|---|---|
| Server does not appear | Confirm the process is running, serverIP is the private address, forwarding targets that same address, the firewall allows the executable, ports are unused, the query port matches, and the token is valid if required. |
| Works on LAN but not over the internet | Check forwarding, the destination IP, Windows Firewall, double NAT, carrier-grade NAT, and whether the public IP has changed. |
| “Version mismatch” | Update with SteamCMD, confirm you used server AppID 556450, restart, and investigate authentication or ownership errors. |
| Server closes immediately | Check the working directory, file permissions, installation completeness, malformed configuration lines, and port conflicts. Try -showlogs if supported. |
| Configuration changes do nothing | Confirm you edited the active server.cfg, restarted the process, and checked whether a command-line argument or provider control panel overrides the file. |
| Save disappears or rolls back | Confirm the active save directory, stop the process cleanly, and restore a dated backup. Do not casually use /restart; community documentation warns that its behavior can be destructive depending on context. |
Fixing a version mismatch
Stop the server and run:
steamcmd.exe +login anonymous +force_install_dir "C:ServersTheForest" +app_update 556450 validate +quit
Restart and test again. If the error continues, back up server.cfg and the saves, reinstall the server files, and first test with a clean configuration. Historical reports associate version errors with stale files, the wrong AppID, and Steam authentication or ownership handling.
Backups, updates, and administration
Protect the save
- Stop the server cleanly before copying files.
- Back up the entire save directory, not only
server.cfg. - Store dated copies outside the live installation directory.
- Keep more than one restore point.
- Test restoration on a separate copy when possible.
Documented commands include /save, /shutdown, /kick, and /ban. Use administrative controls carefully, and treat /restart as potentially destructive rather than as a routine maintenance command.

- Run the SteamCMD validation command.
- Restart and inspect logs.
- Test joining before inviting the whole group.
Run multiple servers
Every instance needs its own installation or correctly separated working files, save arrangement, and unique port set. For example, a second instance might use ports such as 8768, 27018, and 27019. Forward each set to the correct machine and verify that no process already occupies the ports.
Is paid hosting worth it?
Choose managed hosting when you want the least maintenance, do not want to expose your home network, or need provider-managed restarts, backups, and connectivity. It is especially suitable for groups without a technically confident administrator.
Self-hosting is the better value when you already have an always-on Windows machine, a stable connection with usable upload capacity, router access, and the willingness to handle updates and recovery. A generic VPS is appropriate mainly for experienced administrators who specifically verify operating-system compatibility, CPU and storage performance, firewall requirements, Windows licensing where applicable, and backup arrangements.
When comparing providers, prioritize verified The Forest support, actual slot minimums, server location, backup restoration, file access, scheduled restarts, DDoS protection, support quality, refund terms, and the ability to export your saves. Current availability and pricing should be checked on the provider’s live site. Examples of providers readers may encounter include DustBowl.Games, The Hosting, Nitrado, and GTXGaming; do not assume that any listed provider currently offers the required build, region, or configuration without checking.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFinal recommendation
For a technically confident player with suitable home hardware, the reliable starting path is SteamCMD AppID 556450, a generated Windows configuration, a reserved private IP, carefully forwarded ports, and scheduled save backups. For everyone else, a managed provider removes most of the networking and maintenance work—but only if it explicitly supports The Forest dedicated servers and provides access to the files and saves you need.
