windows.globalization.fontgroups.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system DLL, not a game-specific file. If Windows says it is missing or cannot load it, repair the Windows component instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
The file is associated with the Fonts Mapping API, which supports Windows.Globalization font selection for different languages and writing systems. Windows normally keeps it here:
%windir%System32windows.globalization.fontgroups.dll
Do not copy a DLL from a download site into System32, SysWOW64, an application folder, or a game directory. The file must match the installed Windows build, architecture, dependencies, and Microsoft signature.
Start with Windows Update
Time needed: 10–30 minutes, plus restart time
A pending or interrupted Windows update is a common reason for protected system components to become inconsistent.

- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Try opening the affected application again.
If the error remains, continue with DISM and System File Checker. Do not begin by searching for a standalone download of windows.globalization.fontgroups.dll; Microsoft services this file as part of Windows rather than as a separate redistributable.
Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
This is the primary repair for a missing, damaged, or incorrectly serviced Windows copy of the file. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM repairs the Windows component source that SFC uses.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows after both commands complete.
- Launch the application that produced the error.
A successful SFC result usually says that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and repaired them. Test the original application rather than only checking whether the DLL is visible in File Explorer.
Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the guesswork when you are repeatedly hunting through Windows repair steps and cannot tell what changed; its free scan identifies issues, while repair actions are performed by the full version. It is optional, and DISM followed by SFC remains the Microsoft repair path.

If DISM reports that repair files cannot be found
Windows may need a repair source that matches the installed Windows version and build. An arbitrary folder or a DLL copied from another computer is not a valid substitute.
Microsoft documents this form:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows only with a known-good Windows repair source that matches the installation. Using the wrong source can leave the component store unresolved.
After DISM completes, run SFC again:
sfc /scannow
If SFC still cannot repair files, review:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
The log can help an administrator identify which protected files remain damaged.
Check whether the file is actually present
Time needed: 5 minutes
Do not treat File Explorer alone as proof that the installation is healthy. First check the normal location:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
%windir%System32
- Press Enter.
- Search for
windows.globalization.fontgroups.dll.
On 64-bit Windows, System32 is the native 64-bit system directory. SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system binaries used through Windows-on-Windows 64-bit redirection. A 32-bit application cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit application cannot load a 32-bit DLL.
Do not move files between these folders to solve the error. Windows and the application loader select the appropriate architecture automatically. If the file exists but the error continues, the problem may be corruption, a dependency, an incompatible replacement, or a damaged Windows component store.
Understand the exact error message
Windows may display wording such as:
- “The program can’t start because windows.globalization.fontgroups.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because windows.globalization.fontgroups.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting windows.globalization.fontgroups.dll.”
- “Error loading windows.globalization.fontgroups.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “windows.globalization.fontgroups.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These messages do not all mean the same thing.
Missing or not found usually means Windows could not locate the requested component in the expected loading path. It can also result from a damaged installation or an application requesting the wrong architecture.
Specified module could not be found does not always mean the named DLL itself is absent. Windows may be unable to locate a dependency required by that DLL. Microsoft describes this behavior for LoadLibraryEx, which is why copying only the named file often fails.

For a Microsoft Store or compatible Windows application:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
If Repair is unavailable or does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove the application’s local data. Otherwise, uninstall and reinstall the program using the publisher’s original installer or official distribution channel.
For a traditional desktop program, open its own installer or maintenance tool and choose Repair if offered. If it is a game, use the launcher’s built-in Verify, Validate, or Repair files command. The exact menu names depend on the launcher.
Do not place windows.globalization.fontgroups.dll beside the application executable. This file belongs to Windows, and an application-folder copy can create a version or architecture conflict.
Check antivirus quarantine safely
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
An antivirus product can quarantine a protected file after a false positive, or malware can tamper with system files. Do not immediately allow or restore the item.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
windows.globalization.fontgroups.dll. - Check the detection name, file path, and action taken.
- Confirm that the path is the normal Windows location and that the file is a genuine Microsoft-signed system file.
- If the detection is confirmed as a false positive, follow your security policy to restore it.
- Update Defender or your managed antivirus product and run a full scan.
If the item was found outside %windir%System32, do not restore it merely because its filename is familiar. A malicious file can use the same name.
For a stronger check, run Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Full scan. Use Microsoft Defender Offline scan if malware may be active before Windows starts. After the scan, run DISM and SFC again.
Do not use regsvr32
regsvr32 is not a general-purpose DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that implement COM self-registration, normally through DllRegisterServer.
Do not run:
regsvr32 windows.globalization.fontgroups.dll
windows.globalization.fontgroups.dll is a Windows Runtime-related system component, not a DLL documented for manual self-registration. Running regsvr32 can produce another error without repairing the underlying problem.
Do not reinstall runtimes without evidence
Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, and .NET are separate runtime families. Reinstalling them does not replace or repair this Windows component.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteInstall a runtime only if the application reports a separate missing file or runtime requirement, such as:
vcruntime140.dllmsvcp*.dll- A legacy DirectX component
- A specific .NET runtime
Use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable downloads, DirectX End-User Runtime, or .NET downloads pages for those separate issues.
Drivers are not the primary fix
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A driver reinstall is not a demonstrated direct repair for windows.globalization.fontgroups.dll. Do not start in Device Manager unless the application also reports a graphics, display, audio, or other hardware problem.

Likely causes and the appropriate response
| Likely cause | Best response |
|---|---|
| Corrupted protected Windows component | Windows Update, then DISM and SFC |
| Interrupted update or upgrade | Retry updates, repair Windows, or use Windows 11 recovery reinstall |
| Antivirus quarantine | Verify path and signature before restoring, then scan |
| One application affected | Repair or reinstall that application |
| Architecture mismatch | Repair the Windows and application installations; do not swap files |
| Missing dependency | Use the loader error and application diagnostics to identify the dependency |
| Malware or storage corruption | Defender scan, DISM, SFC, disk-health investigation, and CBS log review |
No single file version or size applies to every Windows installation. Servicing changes the component according to the installed Windows build, so public file inventories are not a Microsoft download catalog.
FAQ
Is windows.globalization.fontgroups.dll a genuine file?
Yes. It is a Microsoft Windows component with the file description Fonts Mapping API. It supports Windows.Globalization font-selection functionality.
Where should it be?
Normally:
%windir%System32windows.globalization.fontgroups.dll
The correct location can vary by Windows architecture and system configuration, but copying it to an application folder is not a safe repair.
Can I download it separately?
No authoritative standalone Microsoft download is provided for this DLL. Repair Windows through Windows Update, DISM, SFC, recovery reinstall, or matching installation media.
Recommended Free Tools
Why does Windows say the module is missing when the file exists?
The named file may have a missing dependency, the wrong architecture, damaged contents, or an invalid signature. Run DISM and SFC rather than replacing the visible file.
Should I enable a Windows Feature?
Not normally. This is not fixed by randomly enabling Windows Features. Use Windows repair commands and repair the affected application if only one program fails.
Will reinstalling Visual C++ fix it?
Not specifically. Install Visual C++ only when the application reports a separate Visual C++ runtime error.
What if SFC cannot repair it?
Run DISM first, run SFC again, inspect %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log, and use a matching repair source. If Windows remains damaged, use System Restore or an in-place reinstall.
