mstextprediction.dll Not Found: A Safe Windows Repair Guide

Length9 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team

Start with this diagnostic checklist

Before changing anything, note:

  • Which program reports the error
  • Whether it appears at startup, when opening an app, or after Windows sign-in
  • Whether the problem began after Windows Update, cleanup software, antivirus activity, or an interrupted upgrade
  • Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
  • Whether mstextprediction.dll is mentioned alongside SettingSyncHost.exe

mstextprediction.dll is the Microsoft TextPrediction DLL, a Windows component associated with text prediction and text suggestions. It normally belongs in:

C:WindowsSystem32msTextPrediction.dll

The safest solution is to repair Windows itself with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website.

What the error means

Windows may show messages such as:

  • “The program can’t start because mstextprediction.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “mstextprediction.dll was not found.”
  • “mstextprediction.dll could not be loaded.”
  • “The procedure entry point could not be located.”
  • “This application has failed to start because mstextprediction.dll was not found.”
  • “The application was unable to start because the DLL was not designed to run on Windows.”

These messages come from the Windows loader. They do not necessarily mean that the file is simply absent.

The file may be missing, damaged, quarantined, replaced with an incompatible build, or prevented from loading because another Windows component is corrupted. An entry-point or “bad image” message usually points to corruption or a version mismatch rather than a straightforward missing-file problem.

Public Windows file metadata identifies MSTEXTPREDICTION.DLL as a Microsoft Corporation file associated with Microsoft Windows Operating System. Historical indexed records include both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows builds, so the correct copy depends on the installed Windows version and architecture.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart

Windows Update is the quickest supported repair to try.

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install every applicable update.
  5. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist on a restart.
  6. Open the affected program again.

If the error remains, check for updates a second time. An interrupted update or pending component repair can require more than one restart.

Do not use the Microsoft Update Catalog to search for an isolated mstextprediction.dll file. The Catalog provides official update packages, but Windows servicing should select and install the correct system files as part of the matching update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies. Run DISM first.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
  6. Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the operation to finish.
  2. Restart Windows if DISM requests it.

The command can appear to pause for a while. Do not close the window while it is working. A successful result indicates that the restore operation completed successfully.

Run System File Checker

Open an elevated Command Prompt again if necessary and run:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then interpret the result:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no damaged protected files.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test the affected program.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, restart, and run SFC once more.
  • Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service: Restart and try again from an administrator Command Prompt.

If repeated attempts fail, review the SFC record at:

%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log

Microsoft also documents extracting SFC-related entries from that log with findstr. Do not delete the log before troubleshooting is complete.

Manually hunting through Windows versions and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it finds, while repairs are performed by the full version; it is optional, and Windows servicing remains the primary fix for this Microsoft component.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software can quarantine a legitimate Windows file after a detection, update, or failed repair.

Windows Security

  1. Open Start and type Windows Security.
  2. Open Windows Security.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Look for an entry involving msTextPrediction.dll.
  6. Review the detected path before taking action.

Restore the file only when all of these are true:

  • The path is the genuine Windows directory
  • The file is identified as a Microsoft Windows component
  • The digital signature validates as Microsoft
  • A full malware scan does not show broader compromise

Do not restore an identically named file copied from another location. If the file was quarantined and cannot be restored safely, run Windows Update, DISM, and SFC instead.

Select Scan options, choose Full scan, and start the scan. If Windows Security reports malware, follow its removal instructions before repairing system files.

Fix 4: Verify the location and Microsoft signature

A legitimate copy should normally be located at:

%SystemRoot%System32msTextPrediction.dll

To check the location:

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Enter %SystemRoot%System32 in the address bar.
  3. Search for msTextPrediction.dll.
  4. Right-click the file and select Properties.
  5. Check the Digital Signatures tab.

The signature should identify Microsoft as the signer and show that the signature is valid. The exact version and file size can vary between Windows releases, so do not treat an old indexed version as a universal replacement.

If the only copy is in a temporary folder, a download folder, an unfamiliar application directory, or a removable drive, do not copy it into System32. Run a malware scan and repair Windows through servicing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Confirm 32-bit and 64-bit architecture

On 64-bit Windows:

  • C:WindowsSystem32 contains 64-bit system files
  • C:WindowsSysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files

The names are counterintuitive. System32 is the 64-bit system directory on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 supports 32-bit applications.

To check your Windows architecture:

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select About.
  4. Check System type.

Do not replace a 64-bit file with a 32-bit file, or the reverse. A mismatched file can produce “bad image,” entry-point, or “not designed to run on Windows” errors.

If only one older application fails while Windows and other applications work, the application may be calling the component incorrectly or may have its own damaged files. Repair or reinstall that application from its official installer after completing Windows servicing. Do not place a system DLL in the application folder as a workaround.

Fix 6: Repair the application that reports the error

Although mstextprediction.dll is a Windows component, an individual program may be the first place where a damaged Windows dependency becomes visible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Try the program’s built-in repair option:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps or Apps & features.
  4. Find the affected application.
  5. Select the three-dot menu.
  6. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Test the program after the repair.

If Repair does not help, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the developer’s official source. For games, use the launcher’s Verify files, Repair, or equivalent option before reinstalling the entire game.

There is no evidence that this DLL is supplied by Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET. Installing those packages is therefore not the primary repair for this error.

Fix 7: Check for disk or file-system damage

If DISM and SFC repeatedly fail, the Windows drive may have file-system problems.

  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator.
  2. Run:
chkdsk /f C:
  1. If Windows says the drive is in use, type Y to schedule the check.
  2. Restart the computer.
  3. Allow the disk check to complete.

Back up important files before performing repair work on a drive that is showing broader symptoms, such as repeated corruption, disappearing files, or unusually slow access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can also review Event Viewer:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Event Viewer.
  3. Open Windows Logs.
  4. Select System.
  5. Look for disk, NTFS, or servicing errors around the time the DLL problem occurred.

Fix 8: Update drivers only when the symptoms point to a driver

A driver is not the usual cause of a missing mstextprediction.dll, but graphics, input, storage, or chipset problems can contribute to wider Windows instability.

To check drivers:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant category.
  4. Right-click a device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.

Prefer drivers supplied through Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer. Do not use a driver update as a substitute for DISM and SFC when the error specifically names this Windows DLL.

Finding the right driver version among many device entries can be tedious. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and not a guarantee that it will resolve this DLL error.

Does regsvr32 fix mstextprediction.dll?

Usually, no.

regsvr32 registers certain COM or ActiveX DLLs that implement registration entry points. Static file analysis has reported those exports for msTextPrediction.dll, but Microsoft does not provide a dedicated recommendation to register this file as a normal repair step.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Registration does not restore a deleted or corrupted Windows component. It can also produce architecture, permission, or entry-point errors.

Use it only when a trusted repair procedure specifically requires registration and you have a correctly matched Microsoft-signed file. On 64-bit Windows, the matching tools are generally:

  • 64-bit DLL: %SystemRoot%System32regsvr32.exe
  • 32-bit DLL: %SystemRoot%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe

Never run regsvr32 against a random downloaded DLL.

What if SettingSyncHost.exe is named?

SettingSyncHost.exe is a Windows host process for setting synchronization. A historical crash report has identified msTextPrediction.dll as its faulting module, but that does not mean every error involving this DLL comes from SettingSyncHost.exe.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the crash occurs during sign-in or synchronization:

  1. Install pending Windows updates.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Run DISM followed by SFC.
  4. Check Windows Security protection history.
  5. Test whether the problem affects another Windows user account.

If the problem is limited to one profile, create or test another account. If it is system-wide and servicing cannot repair it, continue with the recovery options below.

Last-resort recovery options

Use these in order rather than jumping straight to a clean installation.

System Restore

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Choose an appropriate restore point from before the error began.
  5. Select Next, then Finish.

System Restore is useful only when a suitable restore point exists. It does not replace personal backups.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows repair installation

If Windows remains damaged after updates, DISM, SFC, disk checks, and System Restore, perform an in-place repair installation using official Windows installation media. Choose the option to keep personal files and applications when offered, and back up important data first.

A repair installation refreshes Windows components without the disruption of a clean installation. If the error appears only in one application, reinstalling that application remains the more appropriate fix.

FAQ

Should I download mstextprediction.dll?

No. Random DLL download sites may provide malware, the wrong Windows build, or the wrong architecture. They also leave the underlying component-store or file-system problem unresolved.

Is mstextprediction.dll a Visual C++ or DirectX file?

No evidence identifies it as part of those redistributables. It is associated with Windows text-prediction functionality, so use Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I copy the file into System32?

Do not do this as a general solution. Windows must install the matching protected component through servicing.

Why does the file appear in System32 on one PC but not another?

Windows versions and installed components can differ. Public metadata shows historical 32-bit and 64-bit records, but those records are not recommended downloads or universal replacement files.

Why does only one program fail?

That program may be damaged, outdated, or exposing a Windows dependency problem that other software does not use. Repair Windows first, then repair or reinstall the affected application.

What is the best first step?

Install Windows updates, restart, and run:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow

Restart again and test the program.
