emdmgmt.dll Not Found: Trace the Windows ReadyBoost Failure

emdmgmt.dll is a genuine Windows component used by the ReadyBoost service, so the safest fix is to repair Windows rather than download the DLL. On Windows 11 and Windows 10, install pending updates, run DISM followed by System File Checker, then investigate security software, storage devices, and the affected service if the error remains.

What this file actually does

emdmgmt.dll belongs to Windows and is associated with ReadyBoost, a feature introduced in Windows Vista that uses compatible external flash storage as a cache. Microsoft documentation identifies %SystemRoot%System32Emdmgmt.dll as the ReadyBoost service component and Ecache.sys as its related volume-filter driver. Microsoft’s ReadyBoost documentation

The file normally runs through a Service Host process rather than acting like a typical application library. Historical file records describe it as the ReadyBoost Service and associate it with Microsoft, but old Vista and Windows 7 file versions are not universal replacements for files on newer Windows installations.

A genuine copy should be in a Windows system directory and have a valid Microsoft digital signature. An identically named file in a game folder, temporary directory, Downloads folder, or unrelated application directory needs investigation because its name alone does not prove that it is genuine.

ReadyBoost availability varies with the Windows release, storage device, service configuration, and hardware. Therefore, an emdmgmt.dll message may indicate a direct ReadyBoost problem, broader Windows component corruption, a quarantined file, or an application reporting a misleading dependency.

Causes matched to symptoms

Symptom Most likely explanation Best next step
Windows says emdmgmt.dll is missing or was not found Deleted or corrupted protected Windows file Run DISM, then SFC
The error began after an update or interrupted upgrade Damaged update or component store Install updates, restart, then repair Windows
Windows Security lists the file in Protection history Quarantine or malware detection Verify path and signature before restoring anything
Event Viewer mentions EMDMgmt, ReadyBoost, or EmdCache Service, performance-counter, driver, or storage issue Inspect the event details and connected removable drives
A third-party application reports the DLL Application-level error or an impersonating file Verify the message, then repair Windows and the application
The problem followed crashes, shutdowns, or disk warnings File-system or drive corruption Back up data and check drive health
The file exists outside a Windows directory Possible malware or bundled copy Scan the file and system; do not register or replace it

Commonly reported wording includes “The program can’t start because emdmgmt.dll is missing from your computer,” “The code execution cannot proceed,” and “Error loading emdmgmt.dll.” These wording variants are collected by public file-indexing pages and should be treated as descriptions of reported symptoms, not proof that every message comes directly from Windows.

Fix 1: Update Windows and restart

A damaged update or incomplete restart can leave protected components in an inconsistent state.

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. On Windows 11, select Windows Update. On Windows 10, select Update & Security, then Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not require an immediate restart.
  6. Repeat the check until no additional updates are offered.
  7. Test the application or action that produced the error.

If Windows Update itself fails, run the official Windows Update troubleshooter, restart, and continue with the repair commands below.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

This is the primary repair for a missing or damaged emdmgmt.dll. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies when a usable cached version is available. Microsoft recommends running them in this order. Microsoft’s system-file repair instructions

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Enter this command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears paused.
  2. After DISM completes, enter:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Repeat the action that generated the error.

A successful result may say that the restore operation completed successfully, or that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them. If SFC says it did not find any integrity violations, the issue may involve a service, dependency, quarantine event, or misleading application message rather than a missing system file.

  • High-speed USB 3.0 performance of up to 150MB/s(1) [(1) Write to drive up to 15x faster than standard USB 2.0 drives (4MB/s); varies by drive capacity. Up to 150MB/s read speed. USB 3.0 port required. Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, usage conditions, and other factors; 1MB=1,000,000 bytes]
  • Transfer a full-length movie in less than 30 seconds(2) [(2) Based on 1.2GB MPEG-4 video transfer with USB 3.0 host device. Results may vary based on host device, file attributes and other factors]
  • Transfer to drive up to 15 times faster than standard USB 2.0 drives(1)
  • Sleek, durable metal casing
  • Easy-to-use password protection for your private files(3) [(3)Password protection uses 128-bit AES encryption and is supported by Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, and Mac OS X v10.9 plus; Software download required for Mac, visit the SanDisk SecureAccess support page]

If DISM reports that source files could not be found, use a matching Windows installation source only if you can verify that it matches the installed edition, language, architecture, and build:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Replace the example path with the trusted repair-source path. Do not use a random downloaded DLL as the source.

Repeatedly hunting through system folders and rerunning SFC or DISM without knowing what changed can make diagnosis harder. Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan showing detected Windows issues; its repair actions require the full version, but it is optional and does not replace the definitive fix for an application-owned problem.

Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file

Security software may remove a damaged or suspicious copy. Do not immediately restore it.

  1. Open Start and select Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Look for an event mentioning emdmgmt.dll.
  5. Expand the event and inspect its path, detection name, and action.
  6. If the file is in a Windows directory, verify its Microsoft signature before considering restoration.
  7. If it is in a temporary or application directory, leave it quarantined and run a full scan.
  8. Run the DISM and SFC sequence after addressing the detection.

Microsoft documents Protection History and its available actions in Windows Security Protection History. A matching filename or displayed description is not enough to prove that a quarantined file is safe.

To inspect a file’s location, right-click it in File Explorer, select Properties, and open the Digital Signatures tab when available. A file outside %windir% deserves additional scrutiny even if its name looks correct.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Check the ReadyBoost service and Event Viewer

ReadyBoost-specific errors can remain after the file itself has been repaired.

SANDISK 128GB Ultra Fit, USB Type-A Flash Drive, Up to 400MB/s Read Speeds
  • Compact plug-and-stay design to instantly add storage to your laptop, game console, in-car audio, and more
  • Save time with ultra-fast transfer speeds up to 400MB/s (Based on read speed. 1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors. USB 3.0 port required.)
  • Transfer a full-length movie to the drive in less than 30 seconds (Based on 1.2GB MPEG-4 video transfer with USB 3.2 Gen 1 or USB 3.0 host device.)
  • Get space for your high-resolution photos, videos, and more at a great value with up to 128GB of storage (1GB=1,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less.)
  • Password-protect files using a downloadable software (Password protection uses 128-bit AES encryption and is supported by Windows 10+ and macOS v10.9+ (Software download required, see Password Protection page on SanDisk site).)
  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type services.msc and press Enter.
  3. Find SysMain.
  4. Open it and note its Service status and Startup type.
  5. Do not delete service entries or change protected service settings casually.
  6. If the service is stopped, use the normal Start control only if Windows permits it, then test again.

Next, inspect the event details:

  1. Press Windows + X and select Event Viewer.
  2. Expand Windows Logs and select System.
  3. Select Find from the Action menu.
  4. Search for EMDMgmt, ReadyBoost, or EmdCache.
  5. Record the event ID, full message, timestamp, and referenced path.

Microsoft Q&A records an Event ID 1010 example in which the EmdCache performance collection procedure in C:Windowssystem32emdmgmt.dll returned an invalid status. Another historical message reports that the EMDMgmt service could not start because a dependency did not exist. These events point toward a service, performance-counter, dependency, or component problem rather than a reason to download a replacement DLL. Event ID 1010 example and EMDMgmt service example

If the error began after connecting a USB flash drive or SD card, remove the device safely and test again. ReadyBoost depends on compatible storage and its configuration can be affected by a failing or repeatedly disconnecting device.

Fix 5: Check storage and file-system health

Back up important files before investigating a drive that has produced crashes, bad-sector warnings, or unexpected shutdowns.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows + E and select This PC.
  2. Right-click the affected drive and select Properties.
  3. Open Tools.
  4. Under Error checking, select Check.
  5. Follow Windows’ instructions.
  6. Restart if Windows requests it.

This check is not a substitute for DISM and SFC. If Windows reports continuing drive errors, use the drive manufacturer’s diagnostic procedure or have the storage device assessed before relying on the installation.

Fix 6: Update storage and chipset drivers carefully

A ReadyBoost or removable-storage event can involve a driver even when emdmgmt.dll is intact.

  1. Press Windows + X.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Disk drives, Storage controllers, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  4. Right-click the device associated with the event and select Properties.
  5. Open the Driver tab and record the provider and date.
  6. Use Update Driver, then Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart and test again.

Prefer drivers supplied through Windows Update or the computer or motherboard manufacturer. Do not remove a storage controller driver unless you have a recovery plan.

Fix 7: Check architecture and file location

On 64-bit Windows, System32 is still the native system directory. SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system components. The names are confusing, so do not move a file based on a download page’s architecture label.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Enter %windir%System32 and press Enter.
  3. Search for emdmgmt.dll.
  4. If relevant to a 32-bit component, inspect the applicable Windows system location rather than copying files between folders.
  5. Right-click the file, select Properties, and review its location and signature.

Do not copy a Vista or Windows 7 version into a Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation. Historical public records list several legacy versions, but those examples are not a complete list of valid Windows files and are not interchangeable.

Why downloading or registering the DLL is unsafe

Do not download emdmgmt.dll from a random DLL repository and copy it into System32, SysWOW64, a game directory, or an application folder. A downloaded file may contain malware, target the wrong architecture, have the wrong servicing metadata, or fail because the real problem is a missing dependency or damaged component store.

regsvr32 is also not a generic DLL installation command. It is intended for libraries that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer; ReadyBoost is a Windows service component, not a typical self-registering COM or ActiveX library. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation

The safe sources are Windows Update, DISM’s trusted matching installation source, System Restore, and supported Windows recovery tools.

Fix 8: Use recovery options if repair fails

If DISM and SFC cannot repair the component:

  1. Capture the exact error message and code.
  2. Record the Windows edition, build, and whether the installation is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  3. Save the relevant Event Viewer entry.
  4. Review the SFC result and CBS log for the affected component.
  5. Use a matching installation source with DISM, or restore a known-good restore point.
  6. On supported Windows 11 installations, open Settings > System > Recovery and look for Fix problems using Windows Update.

Microsoft’s recovery options explain the available choices. The Windows 11 repair-reinstall option can reinstall the current version while preserving apps, files, and settings when that option is available. Back up important data before using any recovery process.

Frequently asked questions

Is emdmgmt.dll a virus?

The genuine Windows component is associated with Microsoft ReadyBoost and should be located in a Windows system directory with a valid Microsoft signature. A copy in an unrelated folder is not automatically genuine and should be scanned and investigated.

Does emdmgmt.dll belong to Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

No. It is a Windows ReadyBoost component, not a general-purpose runtime. Installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not the normal repair for this file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I fix it by enabling ReadyBoost in Windows Features?

ReadyBoost is not normally repaired by toggling a random item in Turn Windows features on or off. Use DISM and SFC first, then inspect SysMain, removable storage, and Event Viewer if the error is ReadyBoost-specific.

Is ReadyBoost still used?

ReadyBoost originated in Windows Vista and continued in later Windows versions, but its availability and usefulness depend on the Windows version, hardware, storage device, and service state. Do not assume that every current installation exposes the same standalone file layout.

What if only one game or application reports the error?

Verify the message and file path. A normal application should not package an arbitrary copy of this Windows component. Repair Windows first, then repair or reinstall the affected application from its official installer if its own installation is damaged.

What information should I give support?

Provide the full message, error code, application name, Windows version and build, file path, Event Viewer entry, antivirus action, and the final DISM and SFC results. This distinguishes a missing file from a dependency failure, service problem, quarantine event, or broader disk corruption.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
