If Windows says it is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair or reinstall the iTunes installation that originally supplied it rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The correct repair depends on whether iTunes came from the Microsoft Store or from Apple’s traditional desktop installer. Those installation channels use different servicing paths, and reinstalling the wrong one may leave the damaged installation untouched.
What itunesadmin.dll is
The recorded description of itunesadmin.dll is “iTunes Administrative DLL.” Legacy file records place it in the iTunes installation directory, commonly under a path such as:
C:Program FilesiTunes
It is an application file, not a Windows component. It is not part of Windows, Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a device driver. Do not copy it to C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

A missing-file message can appear in several forms:
- “The program can’t start because iTunesAdmin.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting iTunesAdmin.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because iTunesAdmin.dll was not found.”
- “iTunesAdmin.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These are typical Windows loader-style messages. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency required by the DLL is missing, not necessarily that itunesadmin.dll itself has disappeared.
Identify the installation and file
Before changing anything, determine which iTunes installation you have.
Check the installed app
- Press
Win+Ito open Settings. - Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps.
- Search for iTunes.
- Check whether the entry offers Advanced options.
A Microsoft Store app normally exposes Advanced options, including Repair and Reset. A traditional desktop installation usually provides a normal uninstall entry and may also list Apple components separately.

If a copy of the file exists:
- Open File Explorer.
- Right-click
itunesadmin.dll. - Select Properties.
- Check the Location field.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Review the signer and signature status.
A file beside the iTunes executable in the expected program directory is more credible than one in Downloads, a temporary folder, or an unrelated application directory. A copy in an arbitrary location should be scanned with Windows Security before you attempt to use it.
Do not treat public file archives as an official Apple manifest. Version tables may show builds such as these, but the exact DLL version included with every iTunes release is not confirmed by Apple’s installer pages:
| Architecture | Reported examples |
|---|---|
| 64-bit | 12.10.0.7, 12.9.4.102, 12.9.2.6, 12.8.0.150, 12.3.0.44, 12.1.3.6 |

Fix 1: Repair Microsoft Store iTunes
Use this first if iTunes was installed through the Microsoft Store.
- Open Settings with
Win+I. - Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find iTunes.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start iTunes and check whether the error has gone.
Repair attempts to correct the app without removing its data. If the error remains, return to the same screen and select Reset. Reset removes the app’s stored data and settings, so back up your iTunes folder and device backups first.
Recommended Free Tools
If Reset does not help:
- Open the iTunes menu in Installed apps.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall iTunes from its official Microsoft Store listing.
- Start the program and test the operation that previously failed.
A Store installation is serviced through Microsoft Store. Installing Apple’s desktop package over it is not a guaranteed repair for the Store copy.
Fix 2: Reinstall the traditional Apple desktop package
Use this path when iTunes came from Apple’s installer or when the installed components include items such as Apple Software Update, Bonjour, or Apple Application Support.

Apple’s official traditional packages include iTunes 12.10.11 for Windows (Windows 64 bit) and iTunes 12.10.11 for Windows (Windows 32 bit). Select the package that matches Windows and the application you are repairing.
To check Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Look at System type.
A 64-bit Windows installation normally requires the 64-bit iTunes installer. A 32-bit program requires 32-bit supporting components. Do not combine files from both packages or place both versions in Windows system folders.

Download the installer only from Apple’s official Support pages. Then:
- Close iTunes and any Apple software.
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Complete setup.
- Restart Windows.
- Open iTunes and test it again.
The repair or reinstall is not intended to delete the iTunes media library, but back up the iTunes folder before changing the installation. Also back up device backups if they are important.
If setup reports “Apple Application Support was not found,” Error 2, or a registration failure, use the clean-removal procedure below instead of repeatedly launching the same damaged installer.
Fix 3: Cleanly remove damaged desktop components
A partial uninstall can leave an old Apple component registered while removing files that iTunes still expects. For a badly damaged traditional installation, remove the Apple components in this order:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- iTunes
- Apple Software Update
- Apple Mobile Device Support
- Bonjour
- Apple Application Support (32-bit), if present
- Apple Application Support (64-bit), if present
To remove them:
- Press
Win+R. - Enter
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select each listed component.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows after the removals are complete.
- Install the correct official Apple iTunes package as an administrator.
Do not remove these components if you still need another Apple application that depends on them without first checking that application’s requirements. If both Store and desktop iTunes entries exist, identify and remove the damaged channel rather than assuming the other installation will repair it.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine an Apple DLL after an update, cleanup operation, or false detection.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
itunesadmin.dllor iTunes. - Review the original path, detection name, and action.
- Restore the file only if it came from a legitimate Apple installation, the path is expected, and the security product’s verdict is clearly a false positive.
- Run a new scan after restoring it.
If the path is a temporary folder or an unrelated program directory, do not restore the file. Uninstall the damaged iTunes installation and reinstall it from Apple or Microsoft instead.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
itunesadmin.dll is not a Windows-protected system file, so System File Checker will not normally restore it. Windows repair commands are useful when the installer, Windows component store, or protected system files are also corrupted.

First install pending updates:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run these commands in order:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannow
Wait for each command to finish before running the next. Restart Windows and try the iTunes repair again.
Manually running SFC and DISM means tracking which command changed the system and repeating repairs without knowing whether the underlying installer is still damaged. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the Windows problems involved, while its full version performs the repair; it is optional, and reinstalling iTunes remains the definitive fix for this Apple file.
If both commands complete successfully but iTunes still reports the same error, stop repeating them and return to the matching Store repair or Apple desktop clean reinstall.
Fix 6: Check architecture and installer registration
A 32-bit application cannot reliably use a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit application cannot use a 32-bit replacement. Mixed Apple components can result from installing one architecture over another, restoring files from a different computer, or interrupting an update.
Remove the mismatched installation and reinstall the correct package. Do not attempt to solve architecture errors by copying files into System32, SysWOW64, or the application folder manually.
You may see advice to run regsvr32 itunesadmin.dll. This is not a universal DLL repair command. regsvr32 works only when the DLL exports the required DllRegisterServer function. Some Apple installation builds may be registered by Windows Installer, but blind manual registration is not a supported first-line repair.
If you were specifically instructed by a legitimate installer diagnostic to register a DLL, use the matching regsvr32 from the correct architecture and the full path to the file. Otherwise, remove the damaged Apple components and reinstall them.
Fix 7: Separate Apple-device driver problems from this DLL error
Reinstalling a driver is relevant when Windows does not recognize an iPhone, iPad, or other Apple device. It is not a direct fix for a missing itunesadmin.dll.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a separate device issue:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Portable Devices, Universal Serial Bus controllers, and any Apple-related category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
You can also press Win+R, enter services.msc, and restart Apple Mobile Device Service when following Apple’s device-recognition troubleshooting. Do not expect that service restart to restore a missing iTunes DLL.
Finding outdated drivers manually means checking many hardware vendors and matching each package to the correct device. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver issues, while driver installation is performed by the full version; it is optional and does not replace reinstalling the iTunes package.
What not to do
Do not download a standalone DLL
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, an incorrect build, or the wrong architecture. Even a clean file may not fix missing Apple dependencies, installer registration, or a damaged iTunes installation.
Use the official Microsoft Store iTunes listing or Apple’s official iTunes Support installer pages. Do not use a DLL download as a shortcut.

Do not copy the file into Windows folders
Windows normally searches an application’s directory before system locations when loading application DLLs. Copying itunesadmin.dll into System32 or SysWOW64 can create conflicts and hide the real installation problem.
Do not assume the error belongs to a game
There is no reliable evidence here that itunesadmin.dll is normal game middleware. If a different application names the file, inspect that application’s installation directory and the event log. It may be loading a stale or copied Apple component.
If iTunes still will not start
Collect these details before trying another repair:
- The complete error text
- The exact path Windows reports
- Whether iTunes came from Microsoft Store or Apple
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The installed iTunes package
- The file’s digital-signature status
- Any antivirus quarantine event
Then check Event Viewer:
- Press
Win+R. - Enter
eventvwr.msc. - Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Find the error recorded at the time iTunes failed.
- Note the failing executable and faulting module.
If the problem began immediately after an update, cleanup, or uninstall and a restore point exists:
- Press
Win+R. - Enter
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select an appropriate restore point.
- Review affected programs.
- Complete System Restore if the consequences are acceptable.
Apple’s Windows guidance now distinguishes legacy iTunes from the newer Apple Music, Apple TV, and Apple Devices apps. If your current task is music playback, video, or device management, check whether the newer Apple application is the intended replacement. If an older workflow specifically requires iTunes, repair the iTunes channel that supplied itunesadmin.dll.
FAQ
Is itunesadmin.dll safe?
It is a legitimate Apple iTunes component when it is located with the iTunes installation and carries a valid expected digital signature. A copy in a temporary, download, or unrelated application folder deserves a security scan.
Is itunesadmin.dll a Windows file?
No. It should not normally be placed in System32 or SysWOW64, and Microsoft redistributables will not provide the correct file.
Will reinstalling iTunes delete my library?
The installer repair or reinstall is not intended to delete the media library, but back up the iTunes folder and device backups before removing or resetting anything.
Can SFC restore itunesadmin.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while itunesadmin.dll belongs to iTunes. Use SFC and DISM only as secondary Windows repair steps.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
Usually not. Use regsvr32 only when a specific installer diagnostic requires it and the DLL supports DllRegisterServer. Reinstalling the matching iTunes package is safer.
What is the safest fix?
Repair the Microsoft Store app if that is where iTunes came from. Otherwise cleanly remove the damaged Apple desktop components and install the matching official 32-bit or 64-bit iTunes package.
