Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →rtfc.dll is an application DLL most commonly associated with MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner Statistics Server, not a Windows system file. The safest fix is to identify the program that needs it, then reinstall or update that program from its official installer instead of downloading a loose DLL.
What this file actually does
Public file metadata identifies rtfc.dll as the RivaTuner Foundation Classes library, part of the RivaTuner software family. MSI Afterburner uses RivaTuner Statistics Server for in-game monitoring and on-screen display features, so a damaged or incomplete Afterburner or RTSS installation can produce this error.
The file is normally stored beside the application that uses it, commonly in a path such as:
C:Program Files (x86)MSI AfterburnerRTFC.dll
C:Program Files (x86)RivaTuner Statistics ServerRTFC.dll
It should not normally be copied to C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Examined public samples are commonly 32-bit PE DLLs, but the correct architecture and build are determined by the application installation. Do not mix an old rtfc.dll with a newer Afterburner or RTSS executable.

Fix 1: Reinstall MSI Afterburner and RTSS
This is the most likely solution when the error appears while starting MSI Afterburner, RTSS, a game with an overlay, or a hardware-monitoring utility.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Search for MSI Afterburner.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it and choose Uninstall.
- If RivaTuner Statistics Server appears separately, uninstall it as well.
- Restart Windows.
- Download Afterburner only from MSI’s official Afterburner product or support page. MSI warns against obtaining the program from unrelated download sites.
- Run the installer.
- Keep the option for RivaTuner Statistics Server selected if you use monitoring or an on-screen display.
- Complete the installation and restart Windows again.
Start Afterburner from the Start menu. If it opens without the missing-file message, the correct copy of rtfc.dll has been restored beside the application.
If uninstalling leaves an old installation folder behind, close Afterburner and RTSS from the notification area and Task Manager first. Then remove only the leftover Afterburner or RTSS folder, not unrelated files, and install again.
Fix 2: Check whether Windows Security removed the file
Antivirus software may quarantine an application DLL after an update or after detecting a suspicious copy. A legitimate filename alone does not prove that a particular file is safe.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent entries mentioning
rtfc.dll, MSI Afterburner, or RivaTuner Statistics Server. - Open the entry and record the detected path.
- Do not immediately choose Restore.
- Verify that the original file came from an official Afterburner or RTSS installer.
- Scan the installer and run a full security scan.
- If the file was from a random folder, temporary directory, or unrelated application, leave it quarantined and remove the suspicious software.
- If the official installer is trusted but the file is repeatedly removed, contact the security software vendor or install a current official release rather than forcing the old file back.
Microsoft warns that restoring quarantined items can allow a genuine threat to run. Reinstalling from the official source is safer than restoring an unexplained copy.
Fix 3: Remove mixed or stale versions
A failed update can leave the executable from one release and rtfc.dll from another.
- Uninstall both MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner Statistics Server from Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Open File Explorer and check the installation folders under
C:Program Files (x86). - Delete only leftover MSI Afterburner or RivaTuner Statistics Server folders after confirming the programs are uninstalled.
- Download one current installer from MSI’s official source.
- Install Afterburner and its bundled RTSS component together.
- Restart and test before restoring custom profiles or third-party overlay plugins.
Do not download several versions of rtfc.dll and try them individually. A matching application package is the correct way to resolve version and architecture differences.
Fix 4: Determine whether a dependency is missing
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that rtfc.dll itself is absent. Windows may be reporting a DLL required by rtfc.dll.
First, check the exact error window and Event Viewer:
Rank #2
- MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
- Press Windows + X and select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs → Application.
- Find the error recorded at the time of the crash.
- Note the faulting application name and faulting module name.
If the message names MSVCP, MSVCR, or VCRUNTIME, install the appropriate Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft’s official download documentation. Use the package architecture required by the affected application, and do not assume that installing a runtime will recreate rtfc.dll.
If no Microsoft runtime is named, reinstall Afterburner and RTSS first. Installing unrelated redistributables is unlikely to repair an application-private DLL.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components when Windows itself is damaged
Because rtfc.dll is not normally a Windows component, DISM and SFC will not usually recreate it. They are appropriate when other Windows features are also failing, system files are reporting corruption, or Windows repair tools show errors.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Start and type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- In the same administrator window, run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test Afterburner again.
A successful result says that corruption was repaired or that no integrity violations were found. If SFC reports files it could not repair, restart and run it again after DISM completes. If the commands finish successfully but rtfc.dll is still missing, return to the Afterburner and RTSS reinstall because Windows repair does not supply that application file.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying Windows problems and show what needs attention; repairs are performed by the full version, but reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when rtfc.dll belongs to Afterburner or RTSS.
Fix 6: Test GPU drivers and overlays
Use this path when rtfc.dll is listed as the faulting module, rather than simply reported as missing.
- Exit MSI Afterburner and RTSS from the notification area.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- End any remaining Afterburner or RTSS processes.
- Temporarily disable other overlays, including game, recording, chat, and GPU overlay features.
- Start Afterburner without RTSS if the installer or settings allow that.
- Test the affected game or application.
- If the crash stops, re-enable RTSS and other overlays one at a time to identify the conflict.
To reinstall the display driver:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter and select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver package.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current driver from the GPU manufacturer’s official support channel.
- Restart and test again.
If you are unsure which driver package applies, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify the relevant hardware; the full version performs the driver installation. It is optional, and a clean official GPU-driver installation remains the direct approach.
Fix 7: Do not register or copy rtfc.dll
Do not run this command against rtfc.dll:
regsvr32 rtfc.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. An ordinary runtime or application DLL generally does not provide that function, so registration usually produces another error and does not repair the installation.
Also avoid copying rtfc.dll into System32, SysWOW64, or the Windows directory. Windows normally searches the application directory for private DLLs, and placing a file in a global directory can create an architecture or version conflict.
Fix 8: Use repair or verification from the installing launcher
If Afterburner or RTSS came through another approved installer or a game utility launcher, look for its repair function.
- Open the launcher.
- Select the affected application.
- Open its settings or properties.
- Choose Repair, Verify, or Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the scan and replacement process to finish.
- Restart Windows if requested.
A verification process should replace missing files from the application’s own package. If it does not, uninstall the affected application and reinstall it from its official source.

When the error continues after reinstalling
Check these conditions before making further changes:
- Confirm that the error names the correct application.
- Check whether Windows Security deletes
rtfc.dllafter each installation. - Look for old Afterburner or RTSS folders left after uninstalling.
- Test with Afterburner and RTSS disabled at startup, then enable them separately.
- Review Event Viewer → Windows Logs → Application for the faulting module.
- Check disk health if files disappear repeatedly.
- Review Controlled folder access and other security-software events.
- If only one Windows account is affected, test the program from a new local user profile.
- If the problem began immediately after a software or system change, open Control Panel → Recovery → Open System Restore and select a restore point from before that change.
A copy of rtfc.dll in a temporary folder, startup directory, or unrelated program folder deserves a security scan. Do not whitelist it merely because the filename is familiar.
Frequently asked questions
Is rtfc.dll a Windows file?
No verified evidence indicates that it is a Windows system DLL. It is an application-private file associated primarily with the RivaTuner and MSI Afterburner ecosystem.
Is rtfc.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
Publicly examined samples are commonly 32-bit PE DLLs. The affected application’s release and architecture still determine which copy is correct, so use the file supplied by that application.
Should I download rtfc.dll separately?
No. Standalone DLL downloads can contain malware, the wrong version, or the wrong architecture, and they often leave the damaged parent installation unresolved. Reinstall the application from MSI’s official Afterburner source.
Will Visual C++ Redistributable fix the error?
Only when the error identifies a missing Microsoft runtime such as MSVCP, MSVCR, or VCRUNTIME. It does not normally restore rtfc.dll.
Does the file belong in System32?
Normally no. It should usually remain in the MSI Afterburner or RivaTuner Statistics Server installation folder.
Can rtfc.dll be malware?
The filename alone cannot establish that. Check the path, installer provenance, security detections, and scan results before restoring or allowing a suspicious copy.
