If mtlx.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, the error usually belongs to a Rockstar Games PC installation rather than Windows itself. The safest repair is to identify the exact game and verify its files through the launcher that installed it.

Which fix applies to you
Use the description that best matches what you see:
- The game says
mtlx.dllis missing: Verify the affected Rockstar game through Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, or Epic Games Launcher. - The file disappeared after an update or cleanup: Check Windows Security Protection history, then verify the game again.
- The file is present, but Windows reports that a module or entry point is missing: Repair the Visual C++ Redistributable that matches the game’s architecture.
- You use mods, downgraders, altered executables, or unofficial patches: Remove those changes and restore a clean installation before verifying files.
- The launcher repeatedly restores and then loses the file: Investigate antivirus actions, launcher problems, permissions, disk errors, or software modifying the game folder.
- Several unrelated Windows programs also fail: Use DISM and SFC as secondary Windows repairs.
- You were considering downloading
mtlx.dll: Do not do that. A replacement from a random DLL site may be malicious, incompatible, or from the wrong Rockstar release.
What mtlx.dll belongs to
MTLX.dll is a third-party game DLL distributed with certain Rockstar Games PC titles. It is not a Windows System32 or SysWOW64 component, and it is not a standalone Microsoft Visual C++ file.

GTAIVMTLX.dll - L.A. Noire, in the game installation
- Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City, and San Andreas: The Definitive Edition, under
GamefaceBinariesWin64MTLX.dll - Red Dead Redemption for PC
These are not interchangeable files. Classic releases can use a 32-bit build, while Definitive Edition releases use 64-bit game binaries. The file’s location, architecture, and size vary by title. Do not copy MTLX.dll from one Rockstar game into another.
The exact consumer-facing purpose of the DLL is not publicly documented by Rockstar. Analysis of one sample identifies an internal RockstarWrapper project and imports from the Visual C++ runtime. That suggests the DLL can participate in game or launcher integration, but it should not be described as a Windows component or automatically assumed to be DRM.
Fix 1: Verify the affected game files
File verification is the most likely fix because it downloads the publisher-supplied DLL for the exact game and edition you own.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Before starting, close the game and identify which title displays the error. The correct repair must be performed on that title, not on another Rockstar game installed on the same computer.
Rockstar Games Launcher
- Open Rockstar Games Launcher.
- Select Settings.
- Under My installed games, select the affected game.
- Choose Verify Integrity.
- Wait for the check and repair to finish.
- Start the game again from the launcher.
If the launcher reports repaired files, test the game before adding mods or changing any files. A successful launch confirms that the missing or damaged game file was the problem.
Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the affected Rockstar game.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to complete the process.
- Launch the game again.
Steam may report that some files were reacquired. That is expected when a file is missing, corrupted, or different from the version supplied by the game depot.
Epic Games Launcher
- Open Epic Games Launcher.
- Select Library.
- Find the affected Rockstar game.
- Select the three dots beside the game.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Verify.
- Wait for the process to finish, then start the game.
If verification fails or the error returns immediately, restart Windows and run verification one more time. If it still cannot restore the file, reinstall the affected game from its legitimate launcher.

Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove a game DLL after an update, especially if the file was changed by a mod, unofficial patch, or altered executable.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the affected game directory or
MTLX.dll. - Read the detection details and the file path.
Do not restore the file merely because the filename matches. Restore it only when you are confident it came from the official game installation and the installation can be verified afterward. Microsoft warns that allowing an uncertain file can expose the computer to malware.
The safer sequence is:
- Note the quarantine event.
- Remove unofficial modifications.
- Verify or reinstall the game through its official launcher.
- Check whether Windows Security removes the newly restored file again.
If the file is repeatedly quarantined, do not keep downloading replacement copies. Check the detection name, update Windows Security, run a full scan, and contact Rockstar support with the exact detection and game path.
Fix 3: Repair the matching Visual C++ Redistributable
Visual C++ will not recreate a missing MTLX.dll. It can help when MTLX.dll is present but Windows reports that a dependency is missing, the module could not be found, or the DLL is not designed to run on Windows.
One analyzed MTLX.dll sample imports MSVCP140.dll and VCRUNTIME140.dll, which are Visual C++ runtime components.
Use Microsoft’s current Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2017–2026:
- For a classic 32-bit Rockstar game, install or repair x86.
- For a 64-bit Definitive Edition or Red Dead Redemption build, install or repair x64.
- On 64-bit Windows, x86 is still required for 32-bit games. Installing x64 alone does not supply the 32-bit runtime.
After downloading the correct Microsoft package:
- Run
vc_redist.x86.exeorvc_redist.x64.exe. - Accept the license terms.
- Select Repair if that option appears.
- Restart Windows.
- Verify the game files again.
- Test the game.
Do not remove older Visual C++ Redistributables just because a newer package is installed. Different games can require different runtime versions.
Fix 4: Remove mods and restore a clean installation
Mods, downgraders, wrapper replacements, and unofficial patches can replace the executable or remove files that the unmodified game expects. Some mod instructions may deliberately remove MTLX.dll; that can be appropriate for a specific modification but is not a valid repair for a clean retail installation.

- Enjoy special game-related features including soundtrack info, achievements, and special events and contest opportunities for fans and Rockstar Games Social Club members
To test the original game:
- Back up saves and configuration files.
- Disable or remove third-party mods.
- Restore altered executables and loaders if the mod provides an uninstall method.
- Verify the game through its launcher.
- Start the unmodified game before reinstalling any mods.
Never copy a 32-bit MTLX.dll from Grand Theft Auto San Andreas into Grand Theft Auto IV, Red Dead Redemption, or a 64-bit Definitive Edition. Matching the filename is not enough. The game, release, architecture, and surrounding files must match.
Fix 5: Reinstall the Rockstar Games Launcher
If the game files are correct but Rockstar Games Launcher cannot validate them, the launcher installation or its local data may be damaged.
First restart Windows and retry verification. If the problem continues, use Rockstar’s documented clean-install procedure for the launcher. That procedure removes launcher and Social Club data while distinguishing those folders from unrelated game data.
Before removing anything:
- Back up saves where the game stores them.
- Close Rockstar Games Launcher in the notification area.
- End remaining Rockstar processes in Task Manager.
- Uninstall Rockstar Games Launcher from Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Remove only the launcher folders covered by Rockstar’s instructions.
- Download and install the launcher from Rockstar.
- Sign in and verify the affected game.
Do not delete the game’s installation folder unless you intend to reinstall the game. Do not assume launcher-cache removal will repair a missing game-local DLL.
Fix 6: Check Windows components with DISM and SFC
SFC and DISM normally repair protected Windows files. They do not normally recreate a Rockstar DLL stored in a game directory, so use them only when other Windows applications also fail or Windows reports system corruption.
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Verify the Rockstar game files again.
DISM should be run before SFC. If both commands report that they repaired Windows components, test the game. If they report no violations but mtlx.dll is still missing, return to game verification rather than repeating the commands.
If manually hunting through Windows component repairs is becoming time-consuming, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what needs attention; its full version performs repairs. Reinstalling the Rockstar game remains the definitive fix when the missing file is game-local.
Fix 7: Update drivers only when the symptoms support it
A graphics or chipset driver does not normally supply mtlx.dll, so driver updates are not the first repair. Consider them when the game also crashes, shows graphics initialization errors, or fails after a Windows or hardware change.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Windows Update
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Advanced options.
- Open Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates if available.
- Install the driver that matches your hardware.
- Restart Windows.
Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click your graphics adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the game.
If you are manually checking many hardware vendors and versions, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify stale drivers; the full version handles driver installation. It is not a substitute for verifying or reinstalling the Rockstar game that owns mtlx.dll.
Why System32 and regsvr32 are usually wrong
Do not place MTLX.dll in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Those folders are for Windows and shared system components, while this DLL belongs in the specific Rockstar game directory or its game binaries directory.

regsvr32 MTLX.dll is also generally irrelevant. regsvr32 registers COM and ActiveX DLLs that expose the required registration functions. A game-local wrapper or support DLL is normally loaded by the game from its installation directory, not registered globally. Running regsvr32 can produce another error without restoring the missing dependency.
When System Restore is reasonable
Use System Restore only when the problem began after a known system change and a suitable restore point exists.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Review the affected programs.
- Complete the restore and restart Windows.
System Restore can revert system files, settings, and installed programs, but it normally does not affect personal files. It still may not restore a game-local DLL, so verify the Rockstar installation afterward.
Still not fixed
Work through this checklist:
- Confirm the exact Rockstar game named by the error.
- Confirm whether it is a classic release or a 64-bit Definitive Edition.
- Read the entire error, especially whether it names
VCRUNTIME140.dll,MSVCP140.dll, or another dependency. - Verify files with the launcher that installed the game.
- Check Windows Security Protection history.
- Remove mods, downgraders, and unofficial executable changes.
- Confirm there is enough free disk space.
- Check that your account can write to the game directory.
- Look for drive errors or software that automatically rewrites the folder.
- Reinstall the game if verification cannot restore the file.
- If the launcher itself repeatedly fails, perform its clean reinstall.
- Contact Rockstar support with the title, launcher, installation path, exact error text, and verification result.
FAQ
Is mtlx.dll a Windows file?
No. It is a game DLL associated with Rockstar Games PC installations. It should not normally be in System32 or SysWOW64.
Is mtlx.dll malware?
The filename alone cannot prove that a file is safe. A legitimate copy should come from the official game installation and should be confirmed by launcher verification. A replacement from an unknown download source should not be trusted.
Is mtlx.dll part of Visual C++?
No. Visual C++ runtime files can be dependencies of some builds, but Microsoft’s Redistributable does not install MTLX.dll.
Should I download a replacement DLL?
No. Download-site copies can contain malware, target the wrong architecture, or belong to another Rockstar game. Verify or reinstall the affected game instead.
Why does Windows say the DLL is missing when it is visible?
The named DLL may be present while one of its dependencies is missing or incompatible. Read the complete error and repair the matching x86 or x64 Visual C++ Redistributable.
Can I copy the file from another Rockstar game?
No. MTLX.dll varies by title and release. Copying between games or between classic and Definitive Edition releases can create further incompatibilities.
