energytask.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system component, not a Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, game, or hardware-driver download. If Windows reports that energytask.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The file is associated with the Power Efficiency Diagnostics task, including AnalyzeSystem. It normally belongs at:
C:WindowsSystem32energytask.dll
The wording may appear when the file is missing or damaged, but “the specified module could not be found” can also mean that another dependency failed to load.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Time needed: 10–30 minutes, depending on pending updates

Windows services this file as part of the operating system. Start with Windows Update before using repair commands.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Repeat the check once after restarting.
On Windows 10, the menus are similar, although the system is no longer receiving normal feature support after October 14, 2025. For a Windows 10 machine that cannot be repaired through updates, plan to use supported recovery or migration options rather than downloading individual system files.
Test the action that produced the error. If the message remains, continue with the component repair commands below.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
Microsoft recommends running Deployment Image Servicing and Management before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC uses that repaired source to replace protected system files.

- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait until DISM finishes. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait for verification to reach 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Microsoft’s SFC result normally falls into one of these categories:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected files appear intact.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: continue to the recovery steps below.
- Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation: restart into normal Windows and try again, or continue with recovery options.
Running SFC repeatedly without changing the underlying component store usually does not add useful information. Outbyte PC Repair can show what is wrong before attempting repair, which is useful when you are repeatedly hunting through SFC and DISM results; its repair functions require the full version, and it is not required for this Microsoft-supported fix.
If DISM reports that source files cannot be found, install pending updates first and retry. Persistent failures may indicate component-store damage, disk problems, or an interrupted update.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Security software can quarantine a legitimate system file, or remove a modified file after detecting malware. Do not restore a file solely because an error appeared.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Privacy & security > Windows Security on Windows 11. On Windows 10, open Update & Security > Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Review entries involving
energytask.dll. - Check the file path shown in the alert. A copy under the Windows directory is more plausible than one in a random application or temporary folder.
- Restore or allow the item only if you have confirmed that it is the genuine Microsoft file and its digital signature is valid.
- Run a fresh scan after making any security-history change.
If Windows Security identifies the file as malware, leave it quarantined and investigate the infection. A signed system file should not be treated as safe merely because its filename is correct.
Fix 4: Verify the file path and Microsoft signature
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
A file named energytask.dll is not automatically genuine. Check its location and signature before copying, restoring, or registering anything.
- Open File Explorer.
- Enter
%windir%System32in the address bar. - Look for
energytask.dll. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the Microsoft signature, if present, and click Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
A missing signature, an invalid signature, or a copy outside the Windows directory requires caution. Do not overwrite it with a file from another computer. Different Windows releases and architectures can contain different component versions.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemswhere /r "%windir%" energytask.dll
If several copies appear, do not delete them automatically. The error may involve a dependency or a damaged task registration rather than the first file found.
Fix 5: Check the Power Efficiency Diagnostics task
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
The associated scheduled task is:
Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows > Power Efficiency Diagnostics > AnalyzeSystem
To inspect it:
- Open Start and type
Task Scheduler. - Right-click Task Scheduler and choose Run as administrator.
- Expand Task Scheduler Library.
- Expand Microsoft, then Windows.
- Select Power Efficiency Diagnostics.
- Select
AnalyzeSystem. - Review the History tab, if enabled.
- Check the Actions tab and note any reported path or loading error.
Do not manually recreate or edit system tasks as the first response. Run Windows Update, DISM, and SFC first. If the file is valid but the task still fails, inspect the Task Scheduler history and Event Viewer for a more specific error.
Open Event Viewer through Start > Event Viewer, then review relevant entries under Windows Logs > System and Applications and Services Logs. Record the event time and exact module name before changing the task.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent system change
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
System Restore is appropriate when the problem began after an update, cleanup utility, driver change, failed servicing operation, or security cleanup.

- Let Windows restart and complete the process.
System Restore normally affects system files, settings, and installed programs, not personal documents. It is not a substitute for malware cleanup or a backup.
Fix 7: Repair-reinstall Windows
Time needed: 30–90 minutes
If Windows Update, DISM, and SFC cannot restore the component, Windows 11 may offer a repair reinstall that preserves applications, files, and settings.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the on-screen instructions and keep the computer connected to power.
If that option is unavailable, use Microsoft installation media for the same Windows edition and architecture. Back up important files first, then choose the in-place upgrade path rather than a clean installation if you need to preserve applications and data.
Fix 8: Check drivers only when diagnostics point there
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A driver can contribute to a power-diagnostics failure, but there is no evidence that a particular driver package installs energytask.dll. Update drivers only when Device Manager or Event Viewer identifies a related device.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Batteries, System devices, and Display adapters.
- Right-click the device associated with the event.
- Select Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- If the problem began after a driver update, open Properties > Driver and use Roll Back Driver when available.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the work of identifying stale drivers when several devices are involved; its driver installation requires the full version, and updating drivers is not the definitive fix for a missing Windows component.

The most likely causes are:
| Cause | What to do |
|---|---|
| Missing or corrupted Windows component | Install updates, then run DISM and SFC |
| Interrupted Windows servicing | Restart, complete updates, then repair the component store |
| Antivirus quarantine | Review Protection history and validate the Microsoft signature |
| Disk corruption or aggressive cleanup software | Check disk health, remove questionable utilities, and repair Windows |
Damaged AnalyzeSystem task registration |
Inspect Task Scheduler after Windows repair |
| Wrong architecture or Windows build | Restore the component from the same installation; do not mix DLLs |
| Missing dependency | Investigate the full loader and Event Viewer message |
The exact application or game named in the popup does not prove that it officially depends on energytask.dll. Windows loader errors can appear during startup, scheduled-task activity, or an unrelated program launch.

What not to do
Do not download energytask.dll from a random DLL archive or copy it from another computer. The file may contain malware, match the wrong Windows build, use the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture, or fail to repair the damaged component store.
There is no verified Microsoft standalone download package for this file. The safe sources are Windows Update, Windows component repair, matching Windows installation media, or an in-place Windows reinstall.
Do not blindly run regsvr32 on every DLL. This file has been reported as exporting COM registration functions, but manually registering it is not the normal remedy for a missing or corrupted Windows component. Use DISM and SFC first.
FAQ
Is energytask.dll legitimate?
Yes, when it is the Microsoft Windows file in the Windows directory and carries a valid Microsoft signature. A matching filename in an application folder is not enough to establish authenticity.
Is it part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No verified evidence identifies it as one of those runtimes. Reinstalling them should not be the primary fix for this Windows component.
Should I reinstall the game or application?
Only if its own support information or event logs show a real dependency. For a normal energytask.dll system error, repair Windows first rather than reinstalling unrelated software.
Does 32-bit versus 64-bit matter?
Yes. A 32-bit DLL copied into a 64-bit Windows system location, or a file from another Windows build, can produce “not designed to run on Windows,” entry-point, or module-loading errors. Restore the file through the same Windows installation and component store.
What if the message says “the specified module could not be found”?
That wording may indicate a missing dependency rather than a missing energytask.dll. Check the complete event, the file path, Windows Security history, and the CBS repair log at:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
What if every repair fails?
Back up important data, review CBS.log and Event Viewer, check disk health, scan for malware, and use System Restore or a Windows repair reinstall. Avoid replacing individual DLLs from unofficial sources.
