brokerlib.dll is normally a Microsoft Windows component, not a standalone runtime that you should download for a game or application. If it is missing, corrupted, or cannot be loaded, repair Windows first, then repair the specific application if only one program is affected.
What this file actually does
BrokerLib.dll is identified as the Broker Base Library, a Windows component associated with brokered-app infrastructure. Public file metadata places the normal copy here:
C:WindowsSystem32BrokerLib.dll
The file is associated with Microsoft Windows and has been recorded with a Microsoft Windows production signature. A Microsoft Q&A loaded-module listing also shows it loading from System32.[^broker-record]
That makes this different from a game-specific DLL, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX redistributable, or ordinary third-party application file. Windows uses broker components to help certain applications communicate with protected or system-managed services. A failure can therefore appear when starting a Microsoft Store app, during Windows startup, or when a desktop program calls a Windows feature.

Build-specific copies differ. Public records include Windows 8.1 and Windows 10-era entries, including a 64-bit Windows 10-era version identified as 10.0.19041.1; older tables list other builds. These numbers are not a universal download recommendation. The correct file must match your Windows installation.
Match the symptom to the likely cause
| What you see | Most likely direction | First action |
|---|---|---|
Windows reports brokerlib.dll missing during startup |
Damaged, deleted, or mismatched Windows component | Run Windows Update, DISM, then SFC |
| Several Windows apps fail | Windows component store or system-file damage | Repair Windows before reinstalling apps |
| One Microsoft Store app fails | App package or Windows component issue | Update or repair the app, then run DISM and SFC |
| One desktop game or program fails | Application files or a dependency may be damaged | Verify or reinstall that application |
| The file exists, but the program still says it is missing | A dependency, architecture mismatch, or search-path issue | Check the complete error and repair the affected app |
| The problem began after antivirus cleanup | Quarantine or system-file damage | Check Protection History, then use Microsoft repair tools |
| The problem began after an interrupted upgrade | Incomplete Windows servicing | Install updates, run DISM and SFC, then use Windows recovery if needed |
The visible filename is not always the complete diagnosis. Windows may report the first DLL it cannot resolve even when a dependency underneath it is the real problem. Write down the entire dialog, error code, application name, and whether the failure occurs at startup or only after launching one program.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Start with Windows Update because a pending cumulative update can contain the correct component or repair servicing metadata.
Windows 11
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install everything offered, including a restart if Windows requests one.
- Restart the computer even if the update process does not force a restart.
- Launch the program that produced the error.
Windows 10
- Open Start, then Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates and restart.
If the error started immediately after an update or rollback, note that timing. Do not immediately replace the DLL with an older copy. A mismatched system file can create loader errors, signature problems, and additional failures.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the primary repair path when BrokerLib.dll is absent from System32, has a bad signature, or multiple Windows features are failing. DISM repairs the Windows component store, which gives System File Checker a trustworthy source. SFC then scans protected system files and replaces damaged copies.[^sfc]
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window because progress may pause for several minutes.
- Restart Windows if DISM reports that a restart is required.
Run SFC
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then interpret the result:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected files appear intact. Continue with the application checks below if the error remains.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test the affected program.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and run SFC a second time.
- Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation: retry in Safe Mode, or repair the component store with DISM before running SFC again.
If Windows Update cannot provide DISM’s repair source, Microsoft documents using a matching installation source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with a genuine source that matches the installed Windows edition, language, and architecture. Do not point DISM at a random extracted DLL or an unrelated Windows image.[^dism]

When manually repeating SFC and DISM becomes guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the system problems involved and show what needs attention, while the repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and Microsoft’s DISM and SFC commands remain the supported Windows repair path.
Fix 3: Check the file’s path and Microsoft signature
Do not copy a replacement file into System32. First determine whether the installed copy exists and whether it appears to be the genuine Windows component.
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to:
C:WindowsSystem32
- Look for
BrokerLib.dll. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the Microsoft signature, if present, and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
A missing file supports the Windows-repair diagnosis, but presence alone does not prove that it is usable. The file may be damaged, its dependencies may be missing, or the program may be loading another copy.
Also check whether a copy exists beside the failing program’s executable. Windows follows a DLL search order, and an application-directory copy can be selected before the system copy. An older or malicious copy can therefore cause compatibility or DLL-preloading problems.[^search]
Do not delete either copy blindly. Use DISM/SFC for Windows files and repair or reinstall the application that owns an application-directory copy.
Fix 4: Determine whether one application is responsible
If Windows starts normally and only one game or desktop program fails, the application may be damaged even when the dialog names brokerlib.dll.
- Open the application’s launcher.
- Find its Manage, Properties, Installed files, Repair, or Verify files option.
- Run the launcher’s verification or repair process.
- Restart the launcher and test the program.
- If no repair option exists, uninstall the application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the program again from its official developer or publisher source.
Do not assume that every DLL error requires Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET. Install or repair a runtime only when the application’s official requirements identify it, or when the complete error names that runtime.
If the application is 32-bit, it may use 32-bit dependencies and a different loader path from a 64-bit application. That does not make SysWOW64 a general-purpose 64-bit DLL folder, and it does not justify copying a 32-bit BrokerLib.dll into either Windows directory. Repair the application and let Windows restore its own architecture-matched files.

- Choose Protection history.
- Look for a detection involving
BrokerLib.dll. - Expand the entry and inspect its original path and action.
- Restore it only if the original path was the expected Windows location and the file’s Microsoft signature can be confirmed.
- Run a Full scan after restoring it.
If the entry is uncertain, do not restore an unknown copy. Repair Windows with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC instead. If another antivirus product is installed, open its quarantine or protection-history screen and follow the same verification approach.
Fix 6: Use Windows recovery when normal repair fails
If the problem began after an interrupted upgrade, rollback, disk-cleaning operation, or malware removal, broader system damage may be involved.
System Restore
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exeand press Enter. - Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and test the affected program.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, updates, and installed programs. It is not intended to remove personal documents.[^restore]

If recovery tools cannot repair the installation, back up important data and perform an in-place repair with official Windows installation media.[^winre]
Fix 7: Update drivers only when the evidence points there
A driver is not the usual source of a BrokerLib.dll missing error, but a failed update or graphics-driver installation can expose broader Windows corruption or make one application crash.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the failure, such as Display adapters.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and check the provider and status.
- Use Update Driver, or download the correct driver from the hardware manufacturer’s official support page.
- Restart and test the application.
When checking many devices manually becomes a cycle of hunting versions and guessing which driver is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues, while installation is handled by the full version. It is optional and is not a substitute for repairing Windows or reinstalling the application that actually owns the failure.

Why regsvr32 is usually the wrong fix
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer.[^regsvr]
BrokerLib.dll is not documented as a self-registering COM server. Running this command is therefore not a general repair:

regsvr32 BrokerLib.dll
A “module failed to load” or missing-entry-point response from regsvr32 does not prove that the file is damaged. It may simply mean the DLL was never designed to be registered.
Avoid manual DLL downloads
Do not download BrokerLib.dll from a DLL archive, copy a file from another computer, or replace System32 manually. The file may contain malware, belong to another Windows build, use the wrong architecture, lack a valid Microsoft signature, or still fail because a dependent component is missing.

FAQ
Is BrokerLib.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. It is identified as the Microsoft Windows Broker Base Library, normally located at C:WindowsSystem32BrokerLib.dll.[^broker-record]
Which Windows versions contain it?
Build-specific records exist for older Windows 8.1 and Windows 10-era releases. The exact version depends on the Windows build. Do not use a public version table to choose a replacement for Windows 10 or Windows 11.
What if the file exists but the error remains?
The program may be loading another copy, a dependent DLL may be missing, or the application may have an architecture mismatch. Check the full dialog, inspect the file signature, run DISM and SFC, and repair the affected application.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesShould I install Visual C++ or DirectX?
Not automatically. BrokerLib.dll is a Windows component, not evidence by itself that a Visual C++ or DirectX package is missing. Install a runtime only when the application’s official documentation or complete error identifies it.
Could malware be responsible?
It is possible for malware or an unsafe cleanup operation to delete or replace system files, but the filename alone does not prove malware. Run a full security scan and verify the path and Microsoft signature before drawing that conclusion.
