Black Myth: Wukong — All 10 Transformations Ranked and How to Use Them

Black Myth: Wukong has 10 Transformation spells, not nine. The tenth, Azure Dome, is unlocked through the post-game secret-ending route. For most players, Golden Lining is the strongest all-around boss transformation, while Ebon Flow is the safest defensive option and Red Tides is the best early-game form.

Transformations are temporary combat forms with their own health and Might gauges. Damage reduces Transformation health, abilities consume Might, and the Destined One returns to normal when either resource is depleted. You can also manually end a Transformation with the on-screen De-Transform command.

How to equip and activate a Transformation

At any Keeper’s Shrine, choose Self-Advance → Set Spells → Transformations, then place your chosen form in the Transformation slot. The Transformation talent tree becomes available after unlocking your first Transformation. See the full location list and spell details in Game8’s Transformation guide.

The command works only when a Transformation is equipped and available. Each form is more than an alternate moveset: it can provide a second health bar, a burst-damage window, elemental immunity, or a way to survive a dangerous section of a boss fight.

All 10 Transformations ranked

This ranking weighs boss usefulness, survivability, damage consistency, ease of use, and how early the form can normally be obtained.

1. Golden Lining — Yellow Loong

Best for: high-damage boss fights and experienced players.

Unlock: Defeat Yellow Loong in Chapter 4 after progressing the Loong Scales quest line. See the Golden Lining details.

Golden Lining combines high damage, Shock immunity, Thunder Bane, strong mobility, and a counter mechanic. Its varied combo can see through an incoming attack, rewarding players who deliberately challenge enemy strikes.

• Use Lightning Dance to build Focus through repeated blade attacks.
• During the light-attack string, use Heavy Attack to trigger Unscathed.
• If an enemy attacks during Unscathed, the hit is seen through and Focus is gained.
• With at least one Focus point, Heavy Attack becomes Death Trilogy.
• Continue pressing Heavy Attack after landing to repeat the leap-and-slam sequence, up to three total strikes.

Death Trilogy empties all Focus, so save it for a clear opening rather than spending it immediately.

Unlock: Complete Chen Loong’s quest, obtain the Ruyi Scroll, enter the painted realm, and defeat Yin Tiger. Yin Tiger cannot be challenged in the ordinary Chapter 3 map. More details are in the Ebon Flow guide.

Ebon Flow has one of the roster’s safest defensive tools: Blacksmith, which lets Yin Tiger hold his blade horizontally to deflect attacks. It also offers strong Focus scaling and excellent mobility.

• Use Onslaught Blade to build Focus and stagger pressure.
• Hold Heavy Attack for Rift Cleaver; more Focus creates a stronger cleave.
• Hold the Deflection command to use Blacksmith and build Focus by deflecting attacks.
• At full Focus, use Windwalker to convert Focus into Swiftness.
• While Swiftness is active, dodging turns Yin Tiger into a gust of wind that passes through enemies.
• Press Light Attack during Windwalker for Stormsurge, a powerful closing attack.

3. Azure Dome — Stone Monkey

Best for: post-game content, elemental resistance, and carrying spells into a Transformation.

Unlock: Complete the secret-ending route and defeat Erlang, the Sacred Divinity. This requires the relevant Chapter 1–5 secret areas and the Great Pagoda sequence. Azure Dome can also be obtained through the applicable post-game progression after defeating the Stone Monkey and The Great Sage’s Broken Shell. It is not a normal Chapter 6 pickup and does not require New Game Plus. See the Azure Dome guide.

Azure Dome is exceptionally versatile. It is immune to Shock and Poison, absorbs and converts Frost and Scorch, retains access to the Destined One’s spells, and can convert pre-Transformation Focus for later use. Its offensive spell system is built around Monkey Mind.

• Use Primal Punch to build Focus.
• Charge Earthshatter Slam and release it for a powerful area attack.
• Dodge while charging to cancel without losing the Focus already built.
• Use Monkey Mind to build Focus and cast selected spells while transformed.
• Enemy Frost and Scorch attacks can empower Azure Dome, so do not automatically avoid every elemental hit.

4. Umbral Abyss — Macaque Chief

Best for: Frost damage, crowd control, and aggressive melee combat.

Unlock: Automatically after completing Chapter 3. The roster and spell information are listed in the Transformation database.

• Use Sprouting Spring for fast sword attacks and Focus generation.
• Use Withering Winter for slower attacks that build Focus faster.
• At full Focus, cast Cold Heart to summon a snowstorm and enter Cold-Hearted State.
• Cold-Hearted State empowers sword attacks and turns dodging into a cloud-and-mist movement tool.
• Use Cold Resolution to close distance and deal heavy damage by consuming Focus and Might.

Umbral Abyss is easier to use than Golden Lining because its damage does not depend as heavily on precise counter timing. Its Red Eyes talent also increases Attack after defeating enemies, stacking up to 20 times in the listed talent description.

5. Red Tides — Wolf Guai

Best for: early-game damage and learning how Transformations work.

Unlock: Defeat Guangzhi near the Outside the Forest Keeper’s Shrine in Chapter 1, then interact with his weapon. The Red Tides guide covers the encounter.

• Use Moon Dance repeatedly to build Focus while inflicting Scorch.
• Use Moon Chase for a series of dash attacks.
• At full Focus, dodge in any direction and immediately follow with Heavy Attack for the enhanced move.
• Perfect Dodges activate Moon Roam, increasing the damage of the next attack.

Red Tides is the most practical first Transformation: it arrives early, has straightforward attacks, applies Scorch Bane, and remains useful against enemies vulnerable to sustained elemental pressure.

6. Azure Dust — Rock Guai

Best for: defense and elemental-heavy encounters.

Unlock: Complete the Man-in-Stone quest. Defeat Mother of Stones, give the resulting Stone Essence to the Man-in-Stone, then defeat the Man-in-Stone to obtain Azure Dust. Defeating Mother of Stones alone is not enough. See the Azure Dust walkthrough.

• Use Earth Shatter for three headbutt attacks.
• Use Mountain Splitter to charge forward; a full charge travels farther.
• Build Focus and use Rockfall for a large area attack.
• When safe, allow enemies to hit Azure Dust: its unique effect builds Might when struck.

Azure Dust is immune to all Four Banes according to its Transformation description. It is durable, but slower and less damaging than the higher-ranked forms.

7. Hoarfrost — Monk from the Sea

Best for: area Frost damage and controlling groups.

Unlock: Defeat the optional Monk from the Sea in Chapter 3. Details are available in the Hoarfrost guide.

• Use Tentacle Flick for alternating attacks that build Focus.
• Use Tentacle Sweep to hit surrounding enemies and build Focus faster.
• With at least one Focus point, cast Ice Sheet.
• Enemies standing on Ice Sheet suffer Frost Bane, while Light Attack throws snowballs.
• Heavy Attack launches Avalanche, a giant snowball that ends the target’s Chilled State.

Hoarfrost is strongest when enemies remain in a confined area. Highly mobile bosses can simply leave the Ice Sheet.

8. Dark Thunder — Horse Guai

Best for: Thunder damage and ranged area pressure.

Unlock: Complete the multi-chapter Horse Guai quest before defeating the Keeper of the Flaming Mountains. Speak with Horse Guai in each relevant chapter, exhaust his dialogue, complete the Chapter 5 confrontation, and choose Pull Forcefully when interacting with the whip. The Dark Thunder guide lists the quest requirements.

The quest is missable. Skipping the Chapter 4 conversation before defeating the Keeper of the Flaming Mountains can lock out the Transformation.

• Use Lightning Lashes to build Focus against targets in front of you.
• Use Thunderbolt Sweep against surrounding enemies.
• At full Focus, cast Lightning Infusion to enter Thrilled State.
• In Thrilled State, Light Attack becomes Thunder Flurry, adding lightning strikes to each lash.
• Heavy Attack becomes Thunder Dominion, creating a formation that repeatedly strikes its area.

Dark Thunder can be powerful, but it needs setup time before reaching Thrilled State, which makes it less consistent in short or highly mobile encounters.

9. Ashen Slumber — Rat Guai

Best for: Scorch buildup and a deliberate self-destruct finisher.

Unlock: Defeat The Third Prince at the conclusion of his multi-chapter side quest. See the Ashen Slumber details.

• Use Chop Wood to swing the iron blade three times and build Focus.
• At full Focus, hold Heavy Attack to use Blow Fire.
• Continue holding the attack to increase the flame’s intensity.
• Use Fiery Burst to self-detonate, deal area damage, and immediately de-transform.

Fiery Burst intentionally ends the Transformation. Use it when Might or Transformation health is low, or when the explosion can hit a boss and nearby enemies together.

10. Violet Hail — Worm Guai

Best for: Poison setups and sustained damage against vulnerable targets.

Unlock: Defeat Daoist Mi in the Chapter 4 Purple Cloud Mountain secret area. You must defeat Daoist Mi before The Duskveil; defeating The Duskveil first permanently closes the route for that playthrough. See the Violet Hail guide.

• Light Attack slashes enemies and creates wounds.
• Hold Heavy Attack for Self-Torment, which wounds the Worm Guai and loads the blade with eggs.
• The blade stores up to four egg stacks.
• Light Attacks consume egg stacks and infest enemy wounds with larvae.
• Use Hive Mind to detonate the larvae and recover a substantial amount of health.
• Self-Detonation deals area damage, de-transforms, and triggers remaining larvae.

Violet Hail has a demanding setup and is less consistent against constantly moving or Poison-resistant bosses.

Missable Transformation checklist

• Violet Hail: Defeat Daoist Mi before The Duskveil in Purple Cloud Mountain.
• Dark Thunder: Exhaust Horse Guai’s dialogue in the required chapters, avoid prematurely defeating the Keeper of the Flaming Mountains, and choose Pull Forcefully at the final whip interaction.
• Azure Dust: Complete both halves of the Man-in-Stone sequence after defeating Mother of Stones.
• Ebon Flow: Obtain the Ruyi Scroll through Chen Loong’s quest and fight Yin Tiger in the painted realm.
• Azure Dome: Follow the secret-ending route through the Great Pagoda and Erlang rather than treating it as a standard Chapter 6 reward.

Which Transformation should you equip?

Version note

The latest official Steam patch listed by the developer is version 1.0.21.23831, released January 14, 2026. It fixed visual effects for some Stone Monkey skills disappearing too early and corrected Controller Type settings failing to save after relaunch. The previous major update, version 1.0.20.22023, corrected various localization, terminology, and settings-text issues. Check the developer’s official Steam announcements for patch information.

Older guides may therefore use inconsistent ability names, claim that there are only nine Transformations, incorrectly say Azure Dome requires New Game Plus, or omit the missable Violet Hail and Dark Thunder quests.
