If you want to play online with a friend, plan on using the same platform family unless Bandai Namco confirms support for your specific pairing. Local versus is player-versus-player, not co-op through the story or other shared progression.
Crossplay: What the official information says
Bandai Namco’s reviewed platform materials do not announce general cross-platform online matchmaking for PlayStation, Xbox, PC, or Nintendo platforms. The clear restriction they do state is that the Switch and Switch 2 versions cannot cross-play with one another, including local wireless play. Do not assume that friends on different platform families can meet online.
For an online match, check the current platform listing and publisher information for the specific systems involved. Console online play may also require a paid subscription: Bandai Namco’s comparison lists PlayStation Plus and Nintendo Switch Online for those platforms, and Xbox lists Game Pass Core or Ultimate for console multiplayer.

Bandai Namco America announced on December 12, 2024 that a free update added local multiplayer across all playable stages for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. A November 7, 2025 notice from Bandai Namco Europe says that single-console split-screen on Switch and Switch 2 remains limited to Hyperbolic Time Chamber. Nintendo’s product details say each local player needs a controller.
What local play does—and does not—mean
Local play means versus battles: players fight one another, either on a shared screen or, on Switch-family systems, through local wireless between compatible systems. It is not a mode for teaming up in the story, and the official feature descriptions do not establish couch players joining online matchmaking together.

Keep the terms separate: split-screen is play on one system, while local wireless connects nearby systems. Neither should be confused with crossplay over the internet.

Can PS5, Xbox, and PC players fight each other online?
General crossplay between those platforms is not documented in the official materials reviewed. Check for a newer Bandai Namco announcement before buying on the assumption that a particular cross-platform pairing works.

Is local multiplayer co-op?
The documented local feature is versus play, where players battle each other. It is not cooperative story play.
Do I need extra controllers?
For same-system local play, make sure each player has a compatible controller. Nintendo’s product details specify one controller per player for local multiplayer on Switch-family editions.
