Xbox error 0x87e50001 usually means an app failed to launch. It is particularly associated with opening an app such as YouTube after switching away from a game. First fully quit the game, then quit and reopen the affected app. If that fails, restart the Xbox before trying updates, service checks, or reinstalling anything.
This error does not, by itself, prove that your console hardware is failing. Microsoft documented this app-launch problem in Xbox Insider release notes in August 2021, but the code does not have one publicly maintained definition that explains every current occurrence.
Try this first
- Press the Xbox button.
- Highlight the game that was running.
- Press the Menu button and select Quit.
- Highlight the affected app, press Menu, choose Quit, and open it again.
- If the error remains, restart the console.
Xbox specifically recommended closing the game and relaunching the app for this scenario in its August 3, 2021 Insider release notes.
What error 0x87e50001 means
The code is associated with an Xbox app failing to start. YouTube is the most frequently reported example, but Microsoft’s notes referred to some apps, not YouTube exclusively. It can affect Xbox One, Xbox One S, Xbox One X, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X consoles, although it does not affect every console, app, or software version.

When the error appears immediately after switching from a game, a temporary software or resource state is a plausible explanation. Some secondary troubleshooting coverage describes the previous game as not fully releasing its resources, but Microsoft has not published that as a universal technical definition. Treat it as a reported scenario rather than a confirmed cause.
Fix Xbox error 0x87e50001 in order
1. Quit and relaunch the affected app
Open the Xbox guide, highlight the app, press Menu, and select Quit. Then launch it again from Home or My games & apps. Relaunching is Microsoft’s documented workaround, but it may not prevent the error from returning.
2. Restart the Xbox
- Press the Xbox button.
- Choose Profile & system > Power > Restart console.
- Confirm with Restart.
A normal restart clears a temporary app or system state without removing installed games or saved data. After the console starts, test the affected app before launching another game.
3. Power-cycle the console
Use this if the console is frozen, the app will not close, or the error returns immediately.

- Hold the Xbox power button on the console for about 10 seconds, until it turns off.
- Disconnect the power cable.
- Wait at least 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the cable and turn the Xbox on.
- Try the app again.
The 30-second interval is a practical troubleshooting step, not an official requirement specific to error 0x87e50001.
4. Install pending console and app updates
On current Xbox interfaces, check Profile & system > Settings > System > Updates. Install any available update and restart the console. Menu labels can vary slightly by language, console software version, or preview-build status.
Also highlight the affected app in My games & apps, press Menu, and check for an available update.
5. Check Xbox service status
Check the current status through Xbox Support before reinstalling anything. An outage involving Xbox services, sign-in, licensing, or app content can make local troubleshooting ineffective. If there is an outage, wait for service restoration and test again.

6. Test the network connection
Go to Profile & system > Settings > General > Network settings, then run the available connection test, such as Test network connection or Test network speed & statistics.
This step matters most when the app opens but cannot sign in, several online apps fail, or content will not load. It is less likely to be the primary fix when the error happens only immediately after switching from a game.
7. Reinstall only the affected app
- Open My games & apps and select See all.
- Highlight the affected app.
- Press the Menu button and select Uninstall.
- Reinstall it from the Xbox Store or Ready to install.
Reinstalling the app is different from resetting the console. It removes and redownloads that app; it is not a reason to delete saved games or reset the entire Xbox.
Microsoft’s general app troubleshooting guidance also recommends updating or reinstalling problematic apps.

8. Sign out and back in only for sign-in symptoms
Consider signing out and back in if the app launches but authentication fails, the problem affects one account but not another, or Xbox services are available. Do not remove your account as a generic cache-clearing step unless you know the account credentials and understand the inconvenience of signing in again.

Only YouTube fails
Quit the game that was open, quit YouTube, and reopen it. If necessary, restart the Xbox, install console and YouTube updates, then reinstall YouTube. This is the best-supported pattern for the code, but it is not proof that every 0x87e50001 occurrence is a YouTube-specific problem.
Several apps fail
Check Xbox service status first, then restart or power-cycle the console, install system updates, and test the network. Do not reinstall every app immediately; a multi-app failure points more toward a service, account, network, or system-level issue.
The error appears only after playing a game
Fully quit the game instead of merely returning to Home, then relaunch the app. If the pattern repeats, restart the Xbox and keep the console and apps updated. Temporarily avoiding Quick Resume for the affected title can be used as a diagnostic workaround if the console interface allows it, but Quick Resume has not been established as the universal cause.

The error started after an Xbox update
Confirm that the update completed, restart the console, and check whether other apps work. If you use an Xbox Insider preview build, check the relevant release notes and report the issue through the Insider feedback process. Microsoft’s 2021 preview notes show that some occurrences were software defects addressed in later preview builds; that does not establish that every retail-console occurrence was permanently fixed.
Reinstalling did not help
Test another app, check Xbox service status, confirm the console is updated, and run the network test. A failed reinstall can reflect a service outage, account or licensing issue, incomplete update, network problem, or broader system-software fault. Contact Xbox Support rather than repeatedly reinstalling apps.
What not to do first
- Do not factory-reset immediately. A reset is disruptive and is not Microsoft’s first-line fix for this error.
- Do not delete saved games or reserved data as routine troubleshooting. Quit, restart, update, and reinstall the affected app first.
- Do not assume the network is responsible when the error happens only after switching from a game.
- Do not use Windows Xbox-app commands for an error occurring on an Xbox console.
If you eventually reach the reset stage with Microsoft Support, back up or synchronize important data and use Reset and keep my games & apps where appropriate. Do not choose a more destructive reset without understanding what it removes.
When to contact Xbox Support
Use Xbox Support if:
- Every app fails to launch.
- The code returns after a full power cycle.
- The problem began after an update and persists.
- Reinstalling the affected app did not help.
- You are using an Xbox Insider preview build.
- The console also crashes, overheats, shuts down, displays artifacts, or fails to boot.
Error 0x87e50001 alone usually indicates an app-launch or software-state problem, not a failed hardware component. Persistent failures across all apps or additional hardware symptoms require a more thorough diagnosis.
