Yes—eligible owners of the PS4 version of Sackboy: A Big Adventure can download the PS5 digital version at no extra cost. Digital owners can claim it on either PS5 model. Physical-disc owners also qualify, but they need a PS5 with a disc drive and must keep the PS4 disc inserted whenever they play.
What “free upgrade” means
The PS5 version is free for people who already own an eligible PS4 license. You do not need to buy the standard PS5 game separately. However, Sackboy is not universally free: people who do not own the PS4 version still need to purchase the game or use an applicable subscription entitlement.

The upgrade is delivered as a digital PS5 download. It does not turn a PS4 disc into a disc-free PS5 license, and it does not automatically include Digital Deluxe extras. See the official PlayStation Store listing.

Digital PS4 owners: how to claim the PS5 version
- Sign in to your PS5 with the PlayStation Network account that purchased the digital PS4 game.
- Open Game Library or the PlayStation Store and search for Sackboy: A Big Adventure.
- Open the game hub or the version-selection menu.
- Select the PS5 upgrade or download option.
- Download and install the PS5 version.
If both versions appear in your library, highlight the game, press the X button, open the […] menu, and choose the PS4 or PS5 version. Sony labels the PS4 edition “PS4”; the PS5 edition displays only the game title. The process requires an internet connection. Follow Sony’s official PS4-to-PS5 upgrade instructions.

Physical PS4 owners: the disc-drive requirement
A physical PS4 copy is eligible, but the upgrade works only on a PS5 model with a disc drive:
- Insert the eligible PS4 Sackboy disc.
- Open the game hub on the PS5.
- Select the upgrade offer.
- Choose Download.
- Leave the PS4 disc in the drive whenever you launch and play the PS5 version.
The disc acts as the ownership check. The PS5 game itself is downloaded digitally, so the disc does not contain the PS5 version. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot read the disc, and there is no software workaround.
Sony also requires the physical disc and PlayStation Network account to be from the same country or region. Imported games, used discs purchased abroad, or an account registered in another region may not show the upgrade offer.

Can PlayStation Plus subscribers upgrade?
PlayStation Store availability can show Sackboy through the PlayStation Plus Extra Game Catalog, but catalog access is subscription access—not necessarily permanent ownership. Availability can change when games leave the catalog.
Sony’s general guidance says PS4 games obtained as PlayStation Plus benefits are generally not eligible for a PS5 upgrade unless the specific game or offer says otherwise. If you access Sackboy through Plus, open its PS5 game hub and check the entitlement shown there. Do not assume that a Plus subscription creates the same upgrade right as buying the PS4 version.
What if the upgrade option is missing?
Check these causes before paying for the game again:
Rank #3
- Confirm that you are using the PlayStation Network account that bought the digital PS4 version.
- For a disc copy, insert the disc before opening the game hub.
- Confirm that the PS5 has a disc drive.
- Check that the disc’s country or region matches the account’s region.
- Open the version selector and look specifically for the PS5 edition.
- Make sure you are not relying only on PlayStation Plus catalog access.
- Restart the PS5 and revisit the game hub while connected to the internet.
- Check that the Store has not defaulted to the PS4 edition or a standalone purchase page.
If the PS5 version downloads but will not launch, physical owners should check that the PS4 disc is still inserted. Downloading the upgrade does not remove that requirement.
Can you keep playing the PS4 version?
Yes. The backward-compatible PS4 edition remains playable on PS5, while the upgrade gives you access to the separate native PS5 version. You can switch between installed versions from Game Library: highlight Sackboy, press X, select […], then choose PS4 or PS5.
Do PS4 saves transfer to PS5?
Sony’s PS5 FAQ identifies Sackboy: A Big Adventure as supporting PS4-to-PS5 save transfers. Claiming the game upgrade and transferring saves are separate processes. Depending on your setup, Sony lists cloud transfer, LAN transfer, wireless transfer, and compatible USB storage as possible methods; cloud storage requires an active PlayStation Plus membership. See Sony’s PS5 FAQ for the platform’s transfer guidance.

- Stuffed! Stitched! Zipped! - Face thrilling, unpredictable challenges as you explore distinctive hand-crafted lands through deeply immersive and expressive controls.

Do you need the Deluxe Edition?
No. The free upgrade covers the standard PS5 game for eligible PS4 owners. Digital Deluxe content is a separate purchase and is not required to claim the PS5 version.
The US PlayStation Store page observed on August 16, 2026, listed the Digital Deluxe Edition at $69.99 and a Digital Deluxe Edition Upgrade at $10. The extras shown include a digital art book, soundtrack, four costumes, four emotes, and 20 avatars. Store prices and promotions can change, so treat those figures as dated price signals rather than permanent prices. The separately listed $10 product is for Deluxe content—not the basic PS4-to-PS5 upgrade.
Quick Recap
Which option makes sense?
- Digital PS4 owner: Claim the PS5 version through the same account; it works on either PS5 model.
- Physical PS4 owner: Use a disc-drive PS5 and keep the disc inserted.
- PS5 Digital Edition owner with a disc: The disc-based upgrade will not work; you would need a digital entitlement instead.
- PlayStation Plus subscriber: Check the current game-hub entitlement rather than assuming permanent ownership or an upgrade.
- New buyer: Compare the current PS4/PS5 digital listing, a legitimate regional PS4 copy, the Deluxe Edition, and Plus catalog access. Do not buy a PS4 copy solely because it is cheaper until the upgrade offer and region eligibility are clear.
