It works with more Windows games with less configuration, usually shows the correct ABXY prompts, and is especially reliable in Xbox app, Microsoft Store, and older PC titles.
The PS5 DualSense is the better choice if you prefer symmetrical sticks and PlayStation ergonomics, or specifically want features such as gyro controls, a touchpad, adaptive triggers, and advanced haptics in supported games. Those features are not universal on PC, and Sony says PC haptic feedback requires a USB connection.
Xbox vs. DualSense at a glance
| Category | Xbox Wireless Controller | PS5 DualSense |
|---|---|---|
| Windows compatibility | Best general-purpose option because of broad XInput support | Good, but support varies more by game and launcher |
| Steam | Excellent | Excellent with native support or Steam Input |
| Non-Steam games | Usually the simplest | May require configuration or translation software |
| Button prompts | Usually correct Xbox prompts | PlayStation prompts only when the game supports them |
| Wireless | Bluetooth, Xbox Wireless on compatible setups, and USB-C | Bluetooth and USB-C |
| Battery | Replaceable AA batteries by default, with optional rechargeable packs | Built-in rechargeable battery |
| Layout | Asymmetrical thumbsticks | Symmetrical thumbsticks |
| Advanced features | Rumble and trigger feedback | Haptics, adaptive triggers, gyro, touchpad, speaker and microphone where supported |
Microsoft lists the Xbox controller’s Bluetooth, Xbox Wireless, USB-C and 3.5 mm headset support on its official product page. Sony lists the DualSense as compatible with PC through USB or Bluetooth on its official buying page.
Why Xbox is the better default for PC
The main advantage is compatibility. Most Windows games that support controllers are designed around XInput, Microsoft’s controller-input standard. An Xbox controller presents the input format those games expect, so it normally works without extra software.

That matters most if your library includes a mixture of Steam, Xbox PC games, Microsoft Store titles, Epic Games Store, Ubisoft Connect, EA, standalone launchers, emulators, and older releases. The Xbox controller is not guaranteed to work perfectly with every game, but it generally creates fewer decisions and fewer troubleshooting steps.
You will also usually see the correct Xbox button prompts. If a game tells you to press A, B, X or Y, those labels match the controller in your hands. That is a small benefit, but it removes confusion in games that do not offer a prompt-selection option.
The Xbox controller is also a natural fit for Xbox Play Anywhere and Microsoft PC games. Windows recognizes it directly, and the Xbox Accessories app can be used for firmware updates and button mapping. Microsoft says the Windows app requires a compatible USB-C cable when using the controller with the app.
How the DualSense works on PC
The DualSense absolutely works on Windows. The important qualification is that basic controller input and full DualSense feature support are different things.
A game may recognize the DualSense natively and display PlayStation icons. Another game may accept it only through Steam Input. A third may recognize the controller but treat it as an Xbox-style XInput device, resulting in Xbox prompts and no DualSense-specific effects.
Valve supports Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and other controllers through Steam Input. Steam can translate DualSense controls for games that otherwise expect XInput. However, translation does not automatically provide native PlayStation prompts, touchpad functions, gyro controls, adaptive triggers or haptic feedback.
Valve also distinguishes between native controller support and Steam Input support. A Steam page marked “Full Controller Support” does not necessarily mean that every special feature of your controller is being used.
Steam versus non-Steam launchers
Steam
Both controllers are strong choices on Steam. The Xbox controller usually works immediately with its native XInput path. The DualSense can use a game’s native support when available, or Steam Input when it is not.

- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
Native DualSense support is preferable when you want PlayStation prompts or the controller’s extra features. Steam Input is more useful when your priority is simply making the game playable.
Do not enable every possible input layer at once. Steam Input, DS4Windows, DSX and other remappers can conflict with one another. Configure Steam Input per game when necessary rather than assuming a global setting is best for every title.
Xbox app, Microsoft Store and other launchers
The Xbox controller has the clearest advantage outside Steam. It normally appears in the format Windows games expect, including many Xbox app and Microsoft Store titles.
A DualSense may still work immediately in a non-Steam game, but its behavior depends on the game’s input framework. It may show Xbox prompts, lack advanced features, or need Steam Input or another translation method. Microsoft notes that some PlayStation controllers may require Steam Input or DS4Windows for full compatibility in certain games.

You can add a non-Steam game to Steam to use Steam Input, but this is not a guaranteed fix. It may interact poorly with another launcher, overlay or anti-cheat system. Test one input method at a time.
DualSense features: impressive, but game-dependent
The DualSense is the more technically distinctive controller. Its advantages include:
- Adaptive triggers: Trigger resistance can change for supported actions.
- Haptic feedback: More detailed vibration effects than ordinary rumble in supported games.
- Gyroscope: Motion aiming and other gyro-based controls where the game exposes them.
- Touchpad: A clickable touch surface that some PC games use for menus or actions.
- Built-in speaker, microphone and light effects: Available only when supported by the game and software.
Sony says adaptive triggers work only in supported games, and its current PC support documentation says haptic feedback requires a USB connection. Sony’s PC accessories page also describes haptics and adaptive triggers as features available in selected PC games.
That makes the DualSense a genuine advantage for a narrower group of players, not a universal upgrade. If you play a supported title with the controller connected by USB, the experience can be more immersive. If most of your games are older, non-Steam or unsupported, the extra hardware may function mainly as a conventional gamepad.

Wireless, wired and headset considerations
Xbox Wireless Controller
You can connect the Xbox controller by USB-C or Bluetooth. Compatible Windows setups can also use Xbox Wireless through Microsoft’s dedicated wireless hardware, but an Xbox Wireless Adapter is not included with every controller package; check the specific listing.
Bluetooth is convenient for ordinary wireless play. The dedicated Xbox Wireless connection is a separate technology, not simply another name for Bluetooth, and may provide a different connection and feature experience on compatible PCs.
The controller includes a 3.5 mm headset jack. Do not assume headset audio behaves identically over every wireless method, however. Bluetooth audio support can have limitations, so check the connection method and your PC’s behavior if controller audio is important.
DualSense
The DualSense supports USB and Bluetooth. Bluetooth is suitable for ordinary wireless input, but Sony’s PC documentation says haptic feedback requires USB. Adaptive triggers and haptics also require game support.
For the full DualSense PC feature set, plan to keep a USB-C data cable connected. A charging-only cable will not provide the same connection.
Battery and charging
This is a preference difference rather than a simple winner.
The standard Xbox Wireless Controller uses replaceable AA batteries by default. You can keep spare batteries ready for uninterrupted play or add a rechargeable battery pack later. That flexibility is useful for long sessions, though rechargeable packs add an extra purchase.
The DualSense has a built-in rechargeable battery and charges over USB-C. It is more convenient if you do not want disposable batteries, but you must recharge it eventually or continue playing with a cable. Runtime varies with use and should not be treated as a universal advantage without model-specific testing.

- Choose DualSense power management if built-in USB-C charging is more convenient to you.
Comfort and stick layout
Neither controller has an objective ergonomic victory. Hand size, grip style, thumb position and muscle memory matter more than the brand name.
The Xbox controller uses asymmetrical thumbsticks, with the left stick higher than the right. Its shape and ABXY arrangement are familiar to many PC and Xbox players.
The DualSense uses symmetrical thumbsticks and a broader PlayStation-style shape. It is often the natural choice for people accustomed to PlayStation controllers or who prefer both sticks at the same height.
For racing and third-person games, either layout can work well. In first-person shooters, your established aiming habits may matter more than the layout itself. For platformers and fighting games, D-pad feel may be more important. For local multiplayer, the best choice may simply be whichever layout and prompts the other players already know.

The DualSense works but shows Xbox prompts
This usually means the game is receiving XInput-style controls through Steam Input or a translation layer. It is not necessarily a controller fault. Native PlayStation prompts require game support and a suitable input path.
The game receives double input
- Close the game.
- Disable all but one remapping layer.
- Check the game’s per-title Steam Input setting.
- Reconnect the controller, preferably by USB for testing.
- Restart the game.
Double menu movement often means both the physical controller and a virtual controller are being exposed simultaneously.
DualSense haptics do not work wirelessly
This may be expected. Sony says PC haptic feedback requires USB, and the game must support the feature. Connect the controller by USB, update its firmware, and confirm that the title supports haptics and adaptive triggers.

The controller works in Windows but not in the game
Check whether the game supports controllers at all, whether it requires XInput, whether another virtual controller has priority, and whether the game was launched before the controller was connected. Firmware, launcher overlays and anti-cheat systems can also affect remapping software.
Update the firmware
Use the Xbox Accessories app for compatible Xbox controller updates. Use Sony’s PlayStation Accessories app for DualSense firmware updates on Windows. Sony provides PC accessory information at PlayStation PC Accessories.
Multiple controllers cause problems
Some games handle multiple devices differently depending on whether they use XInput, DirectInput or their own input system. Disconnect unused controllers and remapping devices while testing. Steam also documents possible conflicts involving multiple input devices.
Which controller should you buy?
Choose the Xbox Wireless Controller if:
- You want one controller for the broadest range of Windows games.
- You regularly play Xbox app, Microsoft Store, older or non-Steam games.
- You want the fewest compatibility and prompt problems.
- You prefer replaceable batteries or an asymmetrical stick layout.
- You want a built-in 3.5 mm headset jack.
Choose the PS5 DualSense if:
- You already prefer the DualSense shape and symmetrical sticks.
- You want gyro controls or a touchpad where games support them.
- You play PC games with native adaptive-trigger and haptic support.
- You prefer a built-in rechargeable battery.
- You already own a DualSense for a PS5 and do not need another controller.
Keep the controller you already own if:
Your games recognize it reliably, the button prompts are manageable, and you do not have a specific unmet need. Buying a second controller rarely improves ordinary PC gaming enough to justify the cost by itself.
Recommended Free Tools
Consider a third-party XInput controller if:
You want features neither standard controller emphasizes, such as back buttons, Hall-effect or TMR sticks, a wired-only design, a different shape or a lower price. Those products need model-by-model research: stick technology, durability, firmware support and compatibility claims vary considerably.
Final verdict
The Xbox Wireless Controller is the best general-purpose recommendation for PC. Its XInput compatibility makes it the least complicated option across Steam, Xbox PC games, Microsoft Store titles and many third-party launchers.
The DualSense is the better enthusiast choice if you value symmetrical sticks, PlayStation ergonomics, gyro and touchpad controls, or supported haptic and adaptive-trigger effects. Just treat those features as game-dependent, and expect USB to be important for advanced haptics on PC.
In short: buy Xbox for convenience; buy DualSense for its distinctive design and supported features; keep whichever controller already works for your library.
