Lenovo Legion Go S with SteamOS: What Buyers Need to Know in 2026

Lenovo’s Legion Go S is an officially supported SteamOS handheld, but buyers must distinguish the Ryzen Z1 Extreme and Z2 Go versions—and choose carefully between SteamOS and Windows 11.

Yes—Lenovo’s Legion Go S is a real, officially supported SteamOS handheld, not merely a Windows device running an unofficial Linux image. Lenovo announced the SteamOS model at CES on January 7, 2025, with an expected May launch and a $499.99 starting price. In 2026, however, “Legion Go S” covers multiple configurations, including the original Ryzen Z1 Extreme model and newer Ryzen Z2 Go versions. The processor, memory and operating system must be checked before comparing prices or performance.

What Lenovo actually announced

Lenovo announced two Legion Go S families at CES 2025: a Windows 11 version and a Legion Go S Powered by SteamOS. Valve described it as the first officially licensed handheld beyond the Steam Deck to use SteamOS. Lenovo’s original announcement promised SteamOS availability in May 2025 at an expected starting price of $499.99.

That announcement price is historical, not a guaranteed current US selling price. Lenovo’s later product pages list several hardware configurations, and a current Z2 Go listing may show “Available Soon.” Buyers should check the exact SKU, operating system, memory and storage on Lenovo’s store before purchasing.

Why SteamOS matters on the Legion Go S

SteamOS is designed around a gamepad-first Steam interface rather than the desktop-first experience of Windows 11. For a dedicated gaming handheld, that can mean quicker access to the Steam library, controller-oriented navigation, suspend and resume, Steam Cloud, Steam Chat and Steam Game Recording. Lenovo positions the Go S as offering quick suspend/resume, gamepad optimization and integrated system and game updates; those are vendor descriptions rather than independent battery or usability measurements.

The trade-off is compatibility. SteamOS uses Linux and Proton to run many Windows games, but no operating system can guarantee that every Steam title works. A game may depend on a particular anti-cheat implementation, launcher, DRM system or Windows-only utility. Non-Steam launchers, PC Game Pass, some multiplayer games and certain modding tools are generally more straightforward on Windows 11.

“Access to the Steam library” should therefore be read as access to the account and store library—not a promise that every title will launch or provide the same experience. Compatibility depends on the individual game and its launcher and anti-cheat requirements.

Legion Go S specifications: do not confuse Z1 Extreme and Z2 Go

The name Legion Go S now covers different hardware platforms. The original Gen 1 model uses AMD’s Ryzen Z1 Extreme, while newer configurations use the Ryzen Z2 Go. A newer processor name does not by itself prove higher gaming performance: the chips have different core counts, graphics configurations and memory specifications.

The Z1 Extreme model has more CPU cores and a higher-end integrated graphics configuration. The Z2 Go is a different platform, not a direct specification refresh. Meaningful performance comparisons require the same game, resolution, power limit, graphics settings, drivers, operating system and upscaling settings. Do not assume every Z2 Go model outperforms every Z1 Extreme model.

The 8-inch 120Hz screen is a real advantage—but not a 120fps guarantee

Both documented families use an 8-inch 1920×1200 display with a 16:10 aspect ratio, 120Hz refresh rate, variable refresh rate and 500-nit brightness. The Gen 1/Z1 Extreme specification also lists 100% sRGB and 10-point touch support.

The panel can display up to 120 refreshes per second, but games do not automatically run at 120 frames per second. Demanding titles may need a lower rendering resolution such as 1280×800 or 1280×720, an upscaler such as FSR, reduced shadows and effects, or a frame-rate cap. The display improves clarity and smoothness; it does not remove the performance limits of an integrated GPU.

SteamOS versus Windows 11: which version should you buy?

Choose SteamOS if you… Choose Windows 11 if you…
Primarily play games from Steam Need Xbox PC Game Pass
Want a console-like, controller-first interface Use several PC launchers and services
Value quick suspend/resume and fewer desktop chores Need Windows-only utilities, mods or multiplayer tools
Are comfortable checking individual game compatibility Will use the handheld as a general-purpose PC

The operating system is a major purchasing decision, not a cosmetic difference between otherwise identical models. SteamOS is the better fit for a Steam-first gaming appliance. Windows is the safer choice for launcher-heavy libraries, Game Pass and software that expects a conventional Windows PC.

What games and software can it run?

Steam games

The Go S is built around the Steam ecosystem, including the Steam library and features such as Steam Cloud. Valve’s official support status makes the factory SteamOS model more significant than a generic Linux handheld, but it does not certify every game individually.

Non-Steam games

Non-Steam software may be possible through desktop mode or other installation methods, but the process and user experience can vary by launcher. Do not expect every Windows launcher to be as convenient on SteamOS as it is on Windows.

Anti-cheat, Game Pass and mods

Games using anti-cheat systems may require developer support for Linux or Proton. Windows-first services such as PC Game Pass are a strong reason to choose the Windows edition. Mod managers and other tools may also be easier to configure in Windows. These are compatibility categories, not guarantees that a particular untested title will fail or work.

Updates on the SteamOS model

Lenovo’s support FAQ gives this update path:

  1. Tap the Steam Menu icon at the bottom left.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select System.
  4. Tap Check For Updates next to Software Updates.

Lenovo says the Steam Client and SteamOS are updated separately: the Steam Client can update automatically after a restart, while the operating-system update is checked through System settings. Menu labels can change with SteamOS releases, so the current on-device wording should take precedence.

Factory SteamOS support is also different from installing SteamOS on a Windows model. A user-installed operating system can involve recovery media, drivers, firmware and support complications. Unless Lenovo and Valve provide current model-specific instructions and a recovery path, the factory SteamOS configuration is the cleaner choice for buyers who want official support.

Storage and memory upgradeability

Lenovo’s PSREF documents list one M.2 storage slot and configuration-specific SSD options. The Z1 Extreme documentation refers to an M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 x4 slot while listing a 2242 SSD offering; the Z2 Go documentation likewise specifies a single M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 x4 slot with configuration-specific 2242/1TB offerings.

Check the exact machine type and service documentation before buying a replacement SSD. The documentation lists the memory as soldered and non-upgradable, so choose 16GB or 32GB at purchase. This matters because integrated graphics share system memory, and capacity cannot be added later.

Performance, battery and portability expectations

The hardware is substantially newer and, in the Z1 Extreme configuration, more powerful on paper than the original Steam Deck class. That does not produce one universal frame-rate result. Performance depends on:

  • Processor model and installed memory capacity
  • Power limit and performance mode
  • Game, driver and firmware version
  • Native resolution or upscaled resolution
  • Graphics settings, frame generation and VRR target
  • SteamOS versus Windows background activity

The 55.5Wh battery is a capacity figure, not a runtime promise. Brightness, refresh rate, wireless connections, frame-rate caps, game engine and power mode can change battery life substantially. Any claimed runtime should include those test conditions.

At roughly 730–740g, the Go S is a heavy handheld compared with a conventional controller. Grip shape, button reach and balance affect long-session comfort, so weight alone cannot determine ergonomics. Its two USB4 ports can support peripherals, displays and USB Power Delivery; buyers considering a dock or external monitor should verify the required cable, charger and accessory specifications.

  • With 128GB MicroSD card, Mytrix 5-in-1 hub, microfiber cleaning cloth, and 9H tempered glass screen protector.

How it compares with Steam Deck

The Legion Go S is not automatically a “Steam Deck killer.” The comparison depends on which Go S processor and operating system are being considered, as well as the games and power settings used.

The Go S’s documented advantages include:

  • A larger 8-inch 16:10 display
  • Higher 1920×1200 resolution
  • 120Hz refresh rate with VRR
  • More modern hardware configurations, including Ryzen Z1 Extreme
  • Up to 32GB of memory
  • Two USB4 ports
  • Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3
  • Official SteamOS support beyond Valve’s own hardware

Steam Deck’s strengths include a longer-running first-party SteamOS hardware ecosystem and tighter control by Valve over the hardware and software integration. It may provide the more established SteamOS ownership experience, while the Go S offers a larger high-refresh display and newer hardware options.

Current Steam Deck pricing, model availability and configuration should be checked directly on the official Steam Deck store page; they are not fixed in this comparison.

Price and availability: separate the announcement from the current product

Lenovo announced the SteamOS Legion Go S on January 7, 2025, with an expected May 2025 launch and a $499.99 starting price. That figure should not be presented as the current universal price. In 2026, Lenovo’s pages cover different processors, memory capacities, storage sizes and operating systems, and availability can vary by SKU and region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a US purchase, check whether the displayed figure is a live sale price, an MSRP, or a “starting at” price. Confirm the operating system, processor, RAM, SSD capacity, included charger, warranty and stock status on the exact Lenovo listing. Prices and configurations differ outside the United States.

Which Legion Go S should you buy?

  • Choose a factory SteamOS model if you mainly play Steam games and want the most console-like handheld experience with officially supported hardware.
  • Choose Windows 11 if PC Game Pass, multiple launchers, Windows utilities, mods or maximum software compatibility are priorities.
  • Choose the Z1 Extreme configuration when maximum performance among the documented Gen 1 models is the priority, subject to its actual price and availability.
  • Consider Z2 Go carefully by checking the exact 16GB or 32GB configuration and waiting for comparable benchmarks at the same power, resolution and settings before assuming it is faster.
  • Choose storage at purchase with RAM in mind: Lenovo lists soldered memory, while SSD replacement depends on the exact machine type and service documentation.

Verdict

The Legion Go S matters because it brings officially supported SteamOS to a handheld platform outside Valve’s Steam Deck family while pairing the operating system with a larger 120Hz VRR screen and newer hardware options. It is an especially logical choice for Steam-first buyers who want a bigger display and more performance headroom than the original Steam Deck class.

It is not a universal Windows replacement, and the name alone does not identify the performance level. The sensible buying order is: choose the operating system, identify the processor, confirm memory and storage, then check the current SKU price and availability. For SteamOS simplicity, buy the factory SteamOS model; for broad PC compatibility, buy Windows 11; for performance comparisons, distinguish the Z1 Extreme from every Z2 Go configuration.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
