The best all-around setup is 40 FPS at 40 Hz on the LCD Steam Deck, or 45 FPS at 90 Hz on the OLED model if it remains stable. Use 1280×800, Medium detail, High textures, Medium shadows, God Rays Off or Low, Screen Space Reflections Off, Motion Blur Off, and Automatic GPU clock control. Start with a 10–12 W TDP limit, then tune it in demanding areas such as Diamond City and downtown Boston.
Fallout 4 can run at higher frame rates in lighter areas, but a completely reliable 60 FPS target is not realistic across the whole game. The most useful compromise depends on whether you prioritize smoothness, battery life, image quality, or heavily modded gameplay.
Quick recommendations
| Priority | Frame target | Refresh rate | Starting TDP | Recommended profile |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Best LCD balance | 40 FPS | 40 Hz | 10–12 W | Medium detail, High textures, Medium shadows, God Rays Off |
| Best OLED balance | 45 FPS | 90 Hz | 11–13 W | Medium detail, High textures, Medium shadows, God Rays Off or Low |
| Battery saving | 30 FPS | 60 Hz | 8–10 W | Medium detail, reduced shadows, God Rays Off |
| 60 FPS attempt | 60 FPS | 60 Hz | Higher than the balanced profile if necessary | Lower shadows, view distance, and lighting; expect dips in demanding areas |
The OLED Deck has a 90 Hz display while the LCD model has a 60 Hz display, making 45 FPS/90 Hz a natural OLED target. That does not mean the OLED hardware universally renders Fallout 4 faster; its main advantages here are the display and power characteristics. See Valve’s Steam Deck specifications for the display differences.
Does Fallout 4 run well on Steam Deck?
Yes. Fallout 4 is playable on Steam Deck, although cited compatibility coverage lists it as Playable rather than Verified. That designation generally means the game works but may need a small adjustment, such as using the touchscreen or on-screen keyboard in the launcher or text-entry fields. It does not mean the game performs poorly.

The important qualification is consistency. Interiors and quiet wilderness areas are easier to render than Diamond City, downtown Boston, or large settlements filled with NPCs, objects, effects, and scripts. A profile that shows 60 FPS in a simple interior may still dip into the 40s in a dense city. The Steam listing is available at Steam, while current compatibility reports can change with SteamOS, Proton, and game updates.
Fallout 4 launcher settings
Fallout 4’s display and graphics options are normally selected in the launcher before entering the game. Use this path:
- Open Steam Library.
- Select Fallout 4.
- Choose Play.
- In the Fallout 4 launcher, select Options.
- Set the resolution, aspect ratio, detail preset, and advanced graphics options.
- Apply the changes, then start the game.
Bethesda documents the launcher as the place to configure aspect ratio, resolution, detail, and advanced graphics options. If a display change does not persist, exit the game completely and repeat the process after relaunching; consult Bethesda’s launcher and graphics guidance.
Launcher labels and behavior can vary with the installed game build, Proton version, and SteamOS update. Do not assume that a launcher workaround is required on every Deck.

Some community guides recommend adding SteamDeck=0 %command% to Steam’s launch options. Treat this only as an optional troubleshooting experiment:
Rank #2
- Open Fallout 4’s Properties in Steam.
- Find Launch Options.
- Add
SteamDeck=0 %command%. - Launch the game and check whether the required options appear or behave differently.
- Remove the command if it causes unexpected behavior.
This is not an official universal requirement. It comes from secondary guidance and adds another variable to troubleshoot. The referenced discussion is at BenQ.

Keeping textures on High usually preserves more visible detail than raising every other setting. The Deck’s 1280×800 screen also limits the benefit of extremely high texture and lighting settings, while high-resolution texture packs can increase memory, storage, and stability pressure.
What to lower first when performance drops
- God Rays: turn them Off before sacrificing textures.
- Shadow distance: reduce distant shadow rendering.
- Shadow quality: move from Medium to Low if needed.
- Lighting and ambient occlusion: reduce these next.
- View-distance sliders: lower object and detail fades in crowded areas.
- Textures: lower them only after the above changes, or when using large texture mods.
Fallout 4 can be CPU-limited in crowded settlements and city areas. Raising the TDP may help, but it cannot guarantee a fixed frame rate when the game engine or simulation is the limiting factor.
SteamOS performance settings
Open the Quick Access menu with the three-dot button, then select the Performance tab. Enable Use per-game profile so Fallout 4’s settings do not affect other games.
- Set the frame-rate limit to your chosen target.
- Match the refresh rate where possible: 30 FPS/60 Hz, 40 FPS/40 Hz, 45 FPS/90 Hz, or 60 FPS/60 Hz.
- Leave GPU clock control on Automatic.
- Start at roughly 10–12 W for the balanced profile, or 8–10 W for a 30 FPS battery profile.
- Use the performance overlay while tuning, then disable it for normal play.
Use one frame limiter while diagnosing frame pacing. Avoid stacking a mod limiter, MangoHud limiter, and SteamOS limiter at the same time; conflicting caps make stutter harder to identify.

LCD versus OLED: which target should you choose?
LCD Deck: 40 FPS at 40 Hz
A locked 40 FPS/40 Hz profile is the strongest general-purpose choice for the 60 Hz LCD screen. It feels substantially smoother than 30 FPS without demanding the power required for an unrestricted 60 FPS target. Use Medium settings with High textures and reduce God Rays and shadows if Boston causes dips.
OLED Deck: 45 FPS at 90 Hz
On the OLED model, 45 FPS at 90 Hz is a convenient target because each frame can be displayed evenly. Start around 11–13 W and keep the same Medium/High visual mix. If 45 FPS is not stable in the areas where you play, use 40 FPS or 30 FPS instead; an inconsistent target is worse than a lower locked one.
30 FPS battery profile
For long sessions, cap the game at 30 FPS and use 60 Hz. Begin around 8–10 W, set detail to Medium, reduce shadows, and turn God Rays Off. This reduces responsiveness compared with 40 or 45 FPS, but it is the easiest profile to sustain at lower power.
FSR, resolution scaling, and image quality
At native 1280×800, begin with SteamOS scaling disabled or use a normal linear filter. FSR is primarily useful when the game renders below the panel’s native resolution. It is not a free enhancement to a game already running natively.
To test it fairly, compare:
- Native 1280×800 with linear scaling.
- 1152×720 or 1024×640 with FSR.
- The same lower resolution without FSR.
Lower internal resolution can improve performance, while FSR may recover some sharpness. It can also introduce sharpening artifacts, shimmering, or an unnatural image, and its power impact depends on the workload. If the native image is clear, FSR may make it worse rather than better. Disable aggressive sharpening and confirm the game is actually rendering below 1280×800 when troubleshooting blur.

Battery, heat, and TDP tuning
TDP is a tuning control, not a guaranteed performance setting. Start at 10–12 W for 40 or 45 FPS, then test in Diamond City, downtown Boston, and a large settlement. If the cap is not maintained, increase the limit gradually. If it is stable, reduce TDP incrementally until you find the lowest setting that holds up in demanding areas.
A higher limit can raise heat, fan noise, and battery drain, while lower values may work in interiors but fail in crowded locations. Exact battery life varies with model, battery health, brightness, operating-system version, game build, mods, and power settings, so isolated reports should not be treated as guarantees.
Docked and external-display play
An external monitor or television can make Fallout 4 render at a much higher output resolution than the Deck’s native 1280×800. That increases GPU workload and may invalidate a handheld profile. Do not assume that settings suitable for the built-in screen will deliver the same frame rate at 1080p or above.
For docked play, use an output resolution appropriate to the display and test 720p or a lower internal resolution with FSR if performance drops. The official Steam Deck Docking Station adds display, USB, Ethernet, and charging connectivity, but it does not increase rendering power.

Vanilla Fallout 4, the Game of the Year Edition, and a small mod list should be tuned with the profiles above before adding advanced tools. Bethesda in-game or Creation Club content is not the same as a Nexus/F4SE installation, and not every mod requires Protontricks or a custom INI.
Best Value
- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
For a modded setup:
- Test a clean vanilla game first.
- Consider disabling the High Resolution Texture Pack. A Nexus modding guide recommends doing so before mod preparation because it consumes storage and memory without being an ideal fit for the Deck’s 1280×800 screen.
- A traditional mod-loading configuration may use
[Archive], but follow the instructions for the specific mod manager and game build.
bInvalidateOlderFiles=1
sResourceDataDirsFinal= - F4SE-related configurations may require Protontricks and Visual C++ 2015–2019 libraries in the setup described by the community guide; these are not vanilla prerequisites.
- Avoid assuming that CryoUtilities, custom VRAM settings, ENBs, or script extenders are necessary for ordinary play.
Large texture packs, ENBs, extensive quest mods, and script-heavy lists can worsen loading, frame pacing, memory use, and stability. Mod compatibility also depends on the installed Fallout 4 build and the current Proton environment. See the Nexus modding guide for its configuration-specific prerequisites.
Troubleshooting
Launcher settings do not save
Exit Fallout 4 completely, relaunch it from Steam, apply the options again, and then start the game. Confirm that the resolution and aspect ratio are correct. If the launcher is inaccessible, test touchscreen input or the on-screen keyboard before adding launch options. The optional SteamDeck=0 %command% workaround should be removed if it creates new problems.
Stutter in Boston or settlements
First confirm that the frame cap and refresh rate match. Then lower God Rays, shadow distance, shadows, lighting, ambient occlusion, and view-distance settings in that order. Increase TDP gradually only if temperatures, noise, and battery use are acceptable. A stable 30 FPS may be preferable to an unstable 40, 45, or 60 FPS target.
OLED frame-pacing problems
- Use 45 FPS with 90 Hz only if the game can hold it.
- Remove any manual GPU clock limit and return GPU control to Automatic.
- Use one frame limiter.
- Lower God Rays and shadows.
- Test without mods.
- Verify game files.
- Try another Proton version only if the evidence points to a Proton-specific issue.
Changing Proton versions blindly can fix one problem while creating another involving the launcher, input, or mods.
Recommended Free Tools
The image is blurry or shimmering
Check that the game is running at 1280×800 if native clarity is intended. Disable FSR at native resolution, test linear scaling, and reduce sharpening. If the problem appeared after installing a visual overhaul, test without that mod.
The game crashes after adding mods or Creation Club content
- Disable the newest mod or Creation Club item.
- Restart and test.
- Verify the game files through Steam.
- Test a clean vanilla profile.
- Reintroduce additions one at a time.
- Confirm that every dependency supports the installed game build.
Missing dependencies, load-order conflicts, outdated script-extender components, and texture- or script-heavy additions are common causes. ProtonDB’s Fallout 4 reports can provide additional compatibility context, but individual reports may be version-specific.
Final setup to use first
Set Fallout 4 to 1280×800, 16:10, Medium detail, High textures, Medium shadows and shadow distance, TAA, SSAO, Screen Space Reflections Off, Motion Blur Off, and God Rays Off or Low. Then use 40 FPS/40 Hz on an LCD Deck or 45 FPS/90 Hz on an OLED Deck, leave GPU clock control Automatic, and begin around 10–12 W.
Test that profile in Diamond City or downtown Boston before increasing visual settings. If it cannot hold the target there, lower the cap to 30 FPS or reduce shadows and view-distance options rather than chasing a 60 FPS number that only appears in easy areas.
