There is no single confirmed fix for John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando crashing on PC. The most reliable sequence is to update the game, confirm your hardware meets its requirements, verify the installation, repair Visual C++ and DirectX when relevant, clean-install the graphics driver, and then test for Windows Security or background-software conflicts. Official patches have already fixed several mission, co-op, mortar, exit, death, and random-crash scenarios, so update the game before assuming the problem is your PC.
First, identify what kind of crash you have

A disconnect or return to the menu is also different from a desktop crash. Router, ISP, firewall, VPN, proxy, NAT, and server conditions can cause connection failures; see Saber’s connection guidance.
1. Update the game and restart Windows
- Exit Toxic Commando completely.
- Close and reopen Steam or the Epic Games Launcher.
- Install every pending game update.
- Restart the PC and test again.
The official patch notes list fixes for crashes involving mortar interactions, pinging a mortar during the Demon Bait mission, a match leader leaving, exiting the game, player deaths, joining sessions, and other random situations. Those notes do not establish that every PC crash is fixed, but a current installation is the correct starting point.
2. Check the PC requirements
The Steam and Epic PC versions list these requirements:

Check the Steam listing or Epic listing for the current requirements. Meeting the minimum specification does not guarantee stable performance. If the PC is below the minimum GPU, RAM, operating-system, or SSD requirement, there may be no software fix that makes it reliable.
3. Verify the game files
Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files.
- When it finishes, restart Steam and launch the game.
Epic Games Store
- Open the Epic Games Launcher and select Library.
- Click the three-dot menu beside the game.
- Choose Manage, then click Verify.
- Relaunch the game after validation completes.
These steps are also documented in Saber’s PC file-verification guide. Verification may reacquire damaged or missing files; it does not normally delete saved games. If it fails, check free disk space, restart the launcher, and consider reinstalling to an SSD. Do not delete save data as an early troubleshooting step.
4. Repair Visual C++ and DirectX
Repair both Visual C++ architectures
Focus’s official PC troubleshooting guide recommends the Microsoft Visual C++ 2015–2022 Redistributable in both x86 and x64 versions, including on 64-bit Windows.

- Download the x86 and x64 packages from Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable download page.
- Run the x86 installer and select Repair, or Install if it is missing.
- Repeat with the x64 installer.
- Restart Windows and test the game.
Do not download individual DLL files from unofficial websites.
Repair DirectX only when the error points to it
If the error mentions D3DCOMPILER, X3DAUDIO, or another missing DirectX component, run Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer (`dxwebsetup.exe`), then restart Windows. This repairs missing legacy components; it is not a substitute for installing a current graphics driver and is not necessary for every crash.
5. Clean-install the graphics driver
Focus recommends a clean display-driver installation for AMD, Intel, and Nvidia hardware:

- Download the current driver for the installed GPU from AMD, Intel, or Nvidia.
- Download Display Driver Uninstaller from its official project source.
- Restart Windows into Safe Mode.
- Run DDU, select the correct GPU vendor, and choose Clean and restart.
- Install the driver you downloaded.
- Restart Windows again and test Toxic Commando.
A clean installation can remove corrupted or conflicting driver components, but it is not guaranteed to fix every crash. If the problem began immediately after a particular driver update, a supported rollback to a known-stable version is also worth testing.
Important note for Intel graphics users
Intel’s February 13, 2026 driver release notes list John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando as a DirectX 12 title that may experience an application crash during gameplay. This makes the driver branch especially relevant on Intel systems, but it does not prove that Intel drivers cause every crash or implicate AMD and Nvidia hardware.

6. Disable overlays and background conflicts
Temporarily test without one overlay or utility at a time:

For a broader diagnostic test, Focus recommends Windows selective startup:
- Press the Windows key and search for
msconfig. - Open System Configuration.
- On General, select Selective startup.
- Clear Load startup items.
- Click OK, restart the PC, and test the game.
If the crash disappears, re-enable items in groups until you identify the conflict. Restore normal startup afterward; selective startup is a diagnostic test, not a permanent configuration.

- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Protection history.
- Look for a blocked game process, including a Protected folder access blocked event.
- If the file is legitimate, use the available option to allow it.
If there is a confirmed block, Saber’s Defender exclusion procedure is Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Manage settings > Add or remove exclusions > Add an exclusion > Folder. Add only the legitimate game-installation folder—not the whole drive or Downloads folder. Exclusions reduce protection. If Protection History shows no block, do not routinely disable antivirus.
8. Check Windows builds and system stability
Focus warns that the game may not be fully compatible with the latest Windows Insider Preview build. If crashes began after moving to an Insider build, test on a supported stable Windows release if possible. Back up important files before changing preview-channel status; opting out can have recovery or reinstall implications.
Also temporarily return the system to stock settings:
- GPU overclocks and undervolts
- CPU overclocks
- XMP or EXPO memory profiles
- Aggressive fan or power-limit tuning
Monitor temperatures and note whether other games or applications fail. A BSOD, visual corruption, driver timeout, or full reboot points to a broader stability, power, temperature, RAM, GPU, or driver issue. Community claims that the game damages hardware are anecdotal and do not establish causation.
If it still crashes: report it with useful evidence
Once the low-risk fixes are exhausted, use Saber’s official issue-reporting form. Include:
- Whether you use Steam or Epic
- GPU model and driver version
- Windows version and build
- Where the crash occurs and how often
- Exact reproduction steps
- Screenshots or a video, if available
- A DxDiag report
- The KSIVA code when relevant
To create DxDiag data, search Windows for dxdiag, open it, select Save All Information, and attach the resulting dxdiag.txt. The KSIVA code appears at the bottom of the in-game Esc menu. Be specific about mission names, mortar use, hosting versus joining, match-leader actions, and whether the process closes, freezes, disconnects, or reboots Windows.
