Xbox Series X and Series S support the major streaming services, including Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Max, Prime Video, Apple TV, Peacock, Crunchyroll, and YouTube. You can also find music, live-TV, sports, and creator apps through the Microsoft Store.

The exact catalog depends on your country and can change over time, so treat the list below as a guide rather than a permanent catalog. To see what is available on your console, open Microsoft Store → Apps → Entertainment.

The major streaming apps on Xbox Series X|S

Microsoft’s U.S. Xbox entertainment page currently highlights these major video services:

App or service Category Separate subscription? Important notes
Netflix On-demand video Yes 4K, HDR, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos depend on the plan, title, display, connection, and audio setup.
Disney+ On-demand video Yes Availability and supported formats vary by market, plan, and title.
Hulu On-demand and live video Yes Primarily relevant to U.S. viewers.
Max On-demand video Yes Plan and title determine available quality and features.
Prime Video On-demand video, rentals, and purchases Usually The Prime subscription catalog is separate from content available to rent or buy.
Apple TV On-demand video, rentals, purchases, and channels Varies The app is broader than Apple TV+ alone and may include Apple Originals, rentals, purchases, and premium channels where supported.
Peacock On-demand and live content Varies Plans and availability depend on the market.
Crunchyroll Anime Varies Free, ad-supported, and paid options may differ by country.
YouTube Video sharing and live content Varies Ordinary YouTube viewing is separate from YouTube Premium, rentals, and YouTube TV.
Sling TV Live TV Yes Channel packages and regional coverage vary.
Spotify Music and podcasts Varies Free and Premium features differ by region.
Pandora Music Varies Microsoft lists Pandora among its console entertainment apps.
Twitch Live creator video Usually no An account is required for many viewing and interaction features.

These are not an exhaustive list of every app available worldwide. Microsoft’s U.S. entertainment page and Canadian entertainment page do not show identical featured services, which illustrates how regional availability works.

Free apps versus free content

Installing most entertainment apps does not require a separate payment to Microsoft. That does not mean the content is free.

  • Free download: You can generally install the app from the Microsoft Store without paying for the app itself.
  • Paid subscription: Services such as Netflix, Disney+, Max, Hulu, and many Crunchyroll or Peacock plans require an account and subscription.
  • Free with ads: Some services offer free tiers, but their availability and terms vary by country.
  • TV-provider authentication: Live-TV apps may require a cable, satellite, internet-TV, or other qualifying subscription.
  • Rentals and purchases: Apple TV, Prime Video, YouTube, and other storefronts may charge separately for individual titles.

Xbox Game Pass is not a general replacement for Netflix, Disney+, Max, or other third-party video subscriptions. It is primarily a gaming subscription, and downloading an entertainment app does not automatically unlock its content.

How to install streaming apps on Xbox

  1. Turn on the Xbox Series X or Series S and sign in.
  2. Open Microsoft Store.
  3. Select Apps.
  4. Open the Entertainment category, or search for the service by name.
  5. Select the app and choose Get or the current install option.
  6. Open it from the Home screen, My games & apps, or its Store page.
  7. Sign in with the service’s account or activation method.

Dashboard labels can change with Xbox updates, but Microsoft’s current guidance points users to Microsoft Store → Apps → Entertainment.

How sign-in usually works

Most apps let you enter an email address and password with the controller. Others provide a QR code, an activation code, or phone-based sign-in that is quicker to complete on another device.

YouTube’s official Xbox process is:

  1. Open YouTube on Xbox.
  2. Go to Sign in & Settings.
  3. Select Sign in to display an activation code.
  4. On a phone or computer, open YouTube’s activation page and enter the code.

An Xbox account does not automatically sign you into most third-party services. You normally need a separate account, subscription, or TV-provider credentials.

Does Xbox Series S support 4K streaming?

Yes. Xbox Series S can stream 4K video in supported apps. That is different from the console’s typical gaming-rendering target. YouTube officially supports 4K playback and HDR on both Series S and Series X. Netflix also lists both consoles for compatible Ultra HD, HDR, and Dolby Vision playback.

Actual quality depends on the app, title, subscription tier, internet connection, Xbox video settings, HDMI path, and TV. A service does not deliver every title in 4K simply because the console and television support it.

For Netflix HDR specifically, Netflix says you need a compatible plan, title, display, and settings, along with a stable connection of at least 15 Mbps. See the Netflix Xbox support page for the service’s requirements.

HDR, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos

These formats should not be treated as interchangeable or universal Xbox features. Support is determined by the individual app, title, subscription, display, and audio equipment.

  • YouTube: 4K and HDR playback are supported on Series S and Series X, but only on videos uploaded in those formats.
  • Netflix: Select content can support Ultra HD, HDR, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos when the plan, title, console, display, connection, and audio equipment qualify.
  • Other services: Check the service’s current Xbox documentation and the playback badges for the specific title. Do not assume HDR10, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, 5.1, or Atmos support across every app.

If audio is limited to stereo or 5.1, check the app’s audio setting, Xbox audio output settings, and whether your TV, soundbar, receiver, and HDMI chain pass the desired format. System-level console support does not guarantee that every app or title will output Dolby Atmos.

Series X versus Series S for streaming

For digital streaming apps, the two consoles are broadly similar. Both can access the major entertainment ecosystem, and Series S can stream 4K in supported apps.

The most important media difference is physical playback:

Xbox Series S 512GB SSD All-Digital Gaming Console (disc Free) with 1 Wireless Controller - 10GB GDDR6 Memory, 8X Cores Custom Zen 2 CPU HDMI_Cable
  • What's in the box: Xbox Series S 512GB console, 1 Wireless Controller, High Speed HDMI cable.
  • CPU: 8X Cores @ 3.6 GHz (3.4 GHz w/SMT) Custom Zen 2 CPU; GPU: 4 TFLOPS, 20 CUs @1.565 GHz Custom RDNA 2 GPU; SOC Die Size: 197.05 mm2.
  • Memory: 10GB GDDR6 128 bit-wide bus; Memory Bandwidth: 8GB @ 224 GB/s, 2GB @ 56 GB/s.; Internal Storage: 512GB Custom NVME SSD
  • Gaming Resolution: 1440p; Performance Target: Up to 120 FPS; HDMI Features: Auto Low Latency Mode, HDMI Variable Refresh Rate, AMD FreeSync.
  • Xbox Series X: Includes a 4K UHD Blu-ray drive.
  • Xbox Series S: Is digital-only and cannot play physical 4K Blu-ray discs.

Series X is therefore the better choice if you want games, streaming, and a physical 4K Blu-ray player in one device. Series S remains a capable digital streaming hub. Differences in app quality may come from the service, TV, receiver, network, or HDMI setup rather than the console model.

Microsoft’s Series X|S hardware fact sheet documents the consoles’ hardware distinctions.

What to do when an app is missing

If you cannot find a service, the problem may not be your console. Apps can be restricted by country, renamed, merged, discontinued, temporarily delisted, or unavailable for a particular Xbox market.

  1. Search the Microsoft Store using the exact service name.
  2. Confirm that you are browsing Apps, not Games.
  3. Check the service’s official device-support page.
  4. Verify the Xbox and Microsoft account region.
  5. Install pending Xbox system updates.
  6. Restart the console and search again.

Xbox does not use the Android-style sideloading model, so you generally cannot install an unavailable streaming app from an unofficial file.

Common streaming problems and fixes

The app installs but will not sign in

  • Confirm that the account works on another device.
  • Use the app’s activation-code or QR-code method if offered.
  • Check whether the account is linked to another Xbox profile.
  • Review Xbox family and parental-control settings.
  • Check the service’s status page before reinstalling.

Video is blurry or below 4K

  • Confirm that the title is actually available in 4K.
  • Check whether your plan includes 4K or HDR.
  • Verify the Xbox video settings.
  • Check the TV and HDMI cable or receiver path.
  • Try connecting the Xbox directly to the TV if an older receiver or switch may limit bandwidth.
  • Update the app and test a stable network connection.

For Netflix HDR, the 15 Mbps guidance is only one requirement; the plan, title, display, settings, and connection must also qualify.

HDR colors look wrong

Check whether the TV is switching picture modes correctly, whether the console is forcing HDR, and whether the HDMI input is configured for the required format. Testing the TV’s automatic or recommended HDMI mode and reviewing the Xbox video-compatibility screen can help isolate the issue.

Audio is only stereo

Review the app’s audio setting, Xbox audio output, and the capabilities of the TV, soundbar, receiver, and HDMI chain. The title and subscription must also support the selected audio format.

Is Xbox a good replacement for a streaming device?

Xbox is an excellent streaming hub if you already own a Series X or Series S and want one HDMI device for games and entertainment. It supports the major video services, music platforms, YouTube, live content, and creator apps.

A dedicated streamer may be a better fit if you prioritize a small remote-controlled interface, lower power consumption during frequent viewing, or a media-first experience. Smart-TV apps, Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV 4K, and Google TV devices can all make sense depending on your preferred ecosystem and services.

Choose Series X if physical 4K Blu-ray playback matters. Choose Series S if you want digital streaming and gaming in a smaller, digital-only console. In either case, confirm your essential services in your regional Microsoft Store before relying on Xbox as your only streaming device.
