How to Get 3D Pinball, InkBall, Hold ’Em, Movie Maker, Calendar and ClipBook Viewer in Windows 7

Windows 7 has no official package restoring 3D Pinball, InkBall, Hold ’Em, Movie Maker, Windows Calendar and ClipBook Viewer. Here are the legitimate recovery options and safer virtual-machine fallbacks.

There is no official Microsoft “nostalgia pack” that restores all six programs to Windows 7. The safest route is to recover software from your own original XP or Vista media, use a verified historical installer where one existed, or run an older Windows installation in a virtual machine. 3D Pinball is usually the easiest to restore; InkBall, Hold ’Em, Windows Calendar and ClipBook Viewer are more reliably used inside Vista or XP.

What Windows 7 left out

These programs did not all come from the same Windows release or installer. 3D Pinball is an XP-era game, InkBall was a Vista game, Hold ’Em was a Vista Ultimate Extra, Movie Maker had both Vista and Windows Live versions, Windows Calendar was a Vista application, and ClipBook Viewer was primarily an XP-era utility.

Program Original source Windows 7 status Best recovery route
3D Pinball for Windows—Space Cadet Windows XP Not normally installed; Microsoft later listed its functionality in a compatibility update Recover from owned XP media or backup
InkBall Windows Vista Removed Use Vista in a virtual machine
Hold ’Em Vista Ultimate Extras Not a standard Windows 7 component Use licensed Vista Ultimate media or a virtual machine
Windows Movie Maker Vista; later Windows Live Essentials Vista version omitted; successor was historically downloadable Use a verified archived installer or an older Windows environment
Windows Calendar Windows Vista Removed Use Vista in a virtual machine
ClipBook Viewer Windows XP Not included in Vista or Windows 7 normally Use XP in a virtual machine

Microsoft’s February 2010 application-compatibility update specifically mentions 3D Pinball, but that did not create a normal Windows 7 installer.

Before installing or copying anything

  1. Open Start, right-click Computer, choose Properties, and record your Windows 7 edition, Service Pack level and system type: 32-bit or 64-bit.
  2. Create a full backup or restore point.
  3. Use original installation media, a backup from your own computer, or a historically authentic installer whose provenance you can verify.
  4. Scan recovered files before running them.
  5. Avoid “all old Windows games” bundles and sites advertising “Movie Maker 2017” or “Movie Maker 2026.” Microsoft says Windows Essentials is discontinued and warns that unofficial Movie Maker downloads may contain malware or hidden costs.

Compatibility is application-specific. A 32-bit program may run on 64-bit Windows 7, but that does not guarantee that its installer, codecs, drivers, registry entries or other dependencies will work.

Restore 3D Pinball for Windows—Space Cadet

3D Pinball is generally the most practical item to recover. If you own Windows XP media or still have an old XP installation or backup, recover the game files from that legitimate source rather than downloading an arbitrary pinball.exe. Copying files is an unofficial, system-dependent recovery method—not a Microsoft-supported Windows 7 installation procedure.

If the game does not launch, right-click its executable, select Properties, open Compatibility, enable Run this program in compatibility mode for, and try Windows XP (Service Pack 3). Use Run this program as an administrator only if necessary.

If it opens and immediately closes, try Vista compatibility mode, move it to a normal folder such as C:GamesPinball, and check whether it needs old graphics or media components. If scores do not save, the program may lack write access or its original registry data. Do not replace system DLLs or change permissions throughout the Windows directory. A virtual machine is the fallback.

Modern Microsoft Store listings with “Space Cadet” in the name are third-party alternatives, not automatically the original Microsoft game. For example, the Microsoft Store listing should not be treated as proof of official provenance.

Restore InkBall and Hold ’Em

InkBall

InkBall was a Vista-era game removed from Windows 7. There is no normal Windows 7 feature switch or official Microsoft package that adds it back. Copying only an executable may leave out supporting files, registry information or other dependencies.

If you want the original game rather than a substitute, install a properly licensed Vista copy in a virtual machine. This preserves the operating system components it expected and is more dependable than transplanting files into Windows 7.

Hold ’Em

Hold ’Em was associated with Windows Vista Ultimate Extras; it was not a standard game included with every Vista edition. Do not treat it as freely redistributable software or download it from an arbitrary archive. The cleanest route is a licensed Vista Ultimate installation, original backup or Vista virtual machine.

Microsoft-era discussions confirm that InkBall and Hold ’Em were not simply hidden Windows 7 shortcuts. See the historical Microsoft Q&A discussion for the distinction.

Windows Movie Maker: identify the version first

“Movie Maker” can mean two different programs:

  • Windows Movie Maker 6.0: the classic Vista application with its older timeline-oriented interface.
  • Windows Live Movie Maker 2011 or 2012: the later ribbon-style successor distributed through Windows Live Essentials for Windows 7.

Windows 7 did not include the Vista version. Historically, users could install Windows Live Movie Maker through Windows Live Essentials and select individual programs, including Photo Gallery and Movie Maker, instead of installing the complete suite. Microsoft’s documentation lists Movie Maker in Windows Live Essentials 2011 and identifies Windows 7 as a supported system at that time.

That historical installer is no longer an officially supported download. Microsoft says Windows Essentials is discontinued and warns about unofficial Movie Maker download sites. If you already have a complete, authentic installer, verify its digital signature or hash where possible, test it in a disposable virtual machine, and avoid disabling antivirus or certificate security to force installation.

Movie Maker also depended on Windows Media Player components. Microsoft’s release notes warn that it may not start on editions without the necessary media technologies. This is especially important for Windows 7 N and KN editions; Microsoft documents the related Media Feature Pack issue.

If Movie Maker installs but will not start

  • Check that Windows Media Player and the required media components are present.
  • Confirm whether the system is Windows 7 N or KN.
  • Try the correct historical Windows Live Essentials release.
  • Check DirectX and graphics requirements.
  • Test with an account that has appropriate permissions.

If an installer says it cannot connect to the Internet, it may depend on Microsoft servers that no longer exist, or the package may be incomplete. Prefer a verified offline installer; do not weaken system security to make a legacy web installer work.

Windows Calendar

Windows Calendar was removed from Windows 7. It cannot be restored through Turn Windows features on or off, and copying a Vista executable into System32 is not a supported solution.

For the original interface and behavior, use Windows Vista in a properly licensed virtual machine. If your actual need is scheduling rather than historical fidelity, a current calendar application is safer and more practical. Windows Live Essentials once provided related calendar functionality through Windows Live Mail, but that suite is also discontinued.

ClipBook Viewer

ClipBook Viewer should not be grouped with Vista’s games. It is an older Windows XP-era component and was not included in Vista or Windows 7 in the normal way. It relied on older clipboard and networking components that are not present as a standard Windows 7 feature.

Do not copy random system files into Windows 7. If you specifically need the original ClipBook behavior, use a properly licensed XP virtual machine. If you only need clipboard history or copy-and-paste between devices, use a modern clipboard utility instead; it will not be ClipBook Viewer, but it avoids rebuilding an obsolete subsystem.

Use compatibility mode correctly

Compatibility mode can help with a standalone old executable, but it cannot recreate removed Windows features, missing services, old codecs or discontinued licensing systems.

  1. Right-click the installer or program executable.
  2. Choose Properties and open Compatibility.
  3. Enable Run this program in compatibility mode for.
  4. Try Windows Vista first, then Windows XP (Service Pack 3) when appropriate.
  5. Use administrator privileges only when the application genuinely requires them.
  6. Apply the setting and test. If it fails, undo it rather than combining many compatibility options at random.

The dependable fallback: a virtual machine

Use Vista for InkBall, Hold ’Em and Windows Calendar; use XP for ClipBook Viewer and, if necessary, 3D Pinball. A virtual machine keeps the old program with the operating system, registry and dependencies it originally expected.

  • Use a properly licensed copy of the relevant Windows version.
  • Keep the legacy guest offline or tightly isolated.
  • Do not use it for banking, email, passwords or sensitive work.
  • Use shared folders cautiously, preferably only for non-executable documents.
  • Do not open untrusted downloads inside the legacy system.

Virtualization is less convenient than copying an executable, but it is usually the most reliable option when the application depends on missing Windows components.

Which method should you choose?

Your goal Recommended approach Trade-off
Play only 3D Pinball Recover it from owned XP media or use a clearly identified modern remake The original is not supplied by Windows 7
Play InkBall or Hold ’Em exactly as remembered Vista virtual machine Requires licensed Vista media and setup
Edit video with the old workflow Use an authentic archived Movie Maker installer if you already have one Unsupported and obsolete
Use Windows Calendar Vista virtual machine or a modern calendar Modern software will not reproduce the original interface
Use ClipBook Viewer XP virtual machine More cumbersome than a modern clipboard tool
Restore everything with one download Do not recommend this by default Bundles are difficult to verify and may contain malware

Common failure messages and fixes

“The installer cannot connect to the Internet”

The installer may rely on retired Microsoft servers, obsolete security protocols or missing online dependencies. Use a verified offline package if you have one, or test the software in a disposable virtual machine. Do not disable antivirus or certificate checks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The game opens and immediately closes”

Try Vista or XP compatibility mode, administrator privileges, different fullscreen settings and a normal user-writable folder. If the program still fails, use its original operating system in a virtual machine.

“Scores or settings do not save”

The application may be installed in a protected directory, have incomplete files or depend on registry data. Try a folder such as C:GamesPinball; do not broadly alter Windows folder permissions. A virtual machine may be necessary.

“A site offers Movie Maker 2017 or Movie Maker 2026”

Treat that as a red flag. Microsoft does not distribute a current official version under those names and warns about unofficial Movie Maker downloads.
