NetherSX2 2.1 is currently listed as the stable Patched 4248 build. The release targets performance losses and visual regressions associated with version 2.0, adds further fixes, and overhauls how the emulator applies game-specific compatibility data. A separate NetherSX2 2.2n-4248 package is listed as a development build, not the default stable download.
The update is meaningful maintenance work, but it is not a universal performance upgrade for every Android phone or every PS2 game. The best build still depends on your GPU, device power, renderer, and game library.
What NetherSX2 is—and what it is not
NetherSX2 is a community Android PS2-emulation project derived from AetherSX2. Its main Patched branch is based on AetherSX2 4248, while the Classic branch uses the older 3668 base.
It is not an official Sony product, a Google Play update, or a direct Android release of PCSX2. NetherSX2 is distributed through project channels such as GitHub and is normally installed by sideloading an APK. The emulator does not include PS2 BIOS files or copyrighted games; users must provide legally obtained copies of the required materials.

What NetherSX2 2.1 changes
Performance and visual-regression fixes
According to the 2.1 release notes, the update addresses performance losses and visual regressions introduced in 2.0, while adding further performance improvements and bug fixes.
That is a developer-stated improvement rather than a universal benchmark result. The release notes do not establish one frame-rate increase that applies to all games and devices. A title may run better, show fewer graphical problems, or behave identically depending on its renderer, Android version, GPU driver, and existing per-game settings.
A more flexible GameDB
The most important technical change is the revised GameDB conversion process. The project says the new system can dynamically combine original per-game settings with newer fixes from PCSX2, while allowing Android- or emulator-core-specific overrides.
In practice, more games can receive appropriate settings automatically without discarding older configurations that were still useful. This can improve rendering, stability, or compatibility for individual titles, but GameDB fixes remain game-specific. They cannot eliminate every limitation of a mobile GPU or driver.

Controller and patch maintenance
The project also identifies updated controller support, SDL controller-database changes, refreshed widescreen and no-interlace patches, game-specific fixes, and improved resolution-scaling values among its maintenance goals. These changes matter most when a particular game or controller previously needed manual workarounds.
Which NetherSX2 build should you install?

Classic 3668
The project describes Classic as generally more performant and recommends it for Mali GPUs and less powerful devices. It may also be the better choice for particular games, including some NASCAR titles.
Patched 4248
Patched 4248 is aimed at stronger devices, especially Adreno-equipped Snapdragon phones and tablets. It includes the newer graphical, GameDB, controller, and bug fixes and is the sensible stable starting point for many high-end Android devices.
What about 2.2n?
The repository currently lists NetherSX2-v2.2n-4248.apk under Development Build. Install it only if you specifically want to test newer changes and can tolerate regressions. For a normal upgrade, use the stable NetherSX2-v2.1-4248.apk package listed by the project.

How to update without losing progress
Back up your data before changing versions, even where an in-place installation is expected to preserve settings. Keep copies of your BIOS files, memory cards, save states, game settings, covers, and texture packs. The project’s migration guidance is available through its AetherSX2-to-NetherSX2 guide.
If you use NetherSX2 1.9a or newer
- Export or copy your emulator data as a precaution.
- Install the new APK normally over the existing installation.
- Open the emulator and verify your game folders, settings, memory cards, and controllers.
The project says this route should preserve current settings.
If you use older NetherSX2 or AetherSX2
- Back up BIOS files, memory cards, in-game saves, save states, settings, covers, and texture folders.
- Follow the project’s migration path, including uninstalling the old application if required.
- Install the new APK.
- Use the emulator’s transfer or import function to restore the exported data.
- Recheck global and per-game settings before playing.
Save-state warning: Save states are not compatible between Classic 3668 and Patched 4248. Before switching branches, make an in-game save or confirm that your progress is stored on the memory card. Do not rely on a 3668 save state loading in 4248, or vice versa.

- Leave the emulator on its default Optimal/Safe profile.
- Try Vulkan as the GPU renderer.
- Set Hardware Download Mode to Disable Readbacks if the game remains graphically correct.
- On Classic 3668 using Vulkan, enable Threaded Presentation.
- Test at native resolution before raising the internal resolution.
If Vulkan causes crashes, missing effects, flickering, or corrupted textures, switch that game to OpenGL. OpenGL can be slower or produce a different image, but it may be more reliable on an older device or driver. Revert per-game overrides before adding speed hacks, and compare the same gameplay scene rather than judging performance from the title screen.

The update does not remove every 4248 limitation. The project documents graphical problems with NASCAR and Colin McRae Rally titles on 4248; Classic 3668 may be preferable for those games.
Older Mali devices can also encounter Vulkan rendering problems or crashes in certain games, including Dark Cloud 2. Switching temporarily to OpenGL may allow a problematic section to run, after which Vulkan can be tested again.
These cases illustrate why emulator performance cannot be reduced to a single “best” build. Game code, GPU architecture, Android drivers, renderer behavior, resolution, and per-game fixes all affect the result.

Is NetherSX2 2.1 worth installing?
Yes, for many users on older or problematic versions, particularly those who want the current stable 4248 fixes and are prepared to back up their data first. The GameDB overhaul and regression fixes make 2.1 more than a cosmetic version change.
Be more cautious if your existing setup is completely stable. Preserve your current installation and saves, then test the new version with the games you actually play. A newer GameDB entry or renderer change can help one title while requiring an override in another.
Choose Classic or test carefully if you use an older Mali device, rely on Vulkan-sensitive games, or play NASCAR and Colin McRae Rally. And if you need the newest possible changes, treat 2.2n as experimental rather than assuming it is a replacement for stable 2.1.
Bottom line
NetherSX2 2.1 is best understood as a substantial Android emulator maintenance and compatibility update—not a brand-new PS2 engine and not a guarantee that every game will run faster. Start with the stable build suited to your hardware, keep memory-card saves separate from branch-specific save states, and treat Vulkan, GameDB fixes, and resolution increases as settings to test per game.
