For most gamers, the Radeon RX 9060 XT is the better buy—especially the 16GB model—because it generally delivers higher rasterized gaming performance and has substantially more VRAM. The GeForce RTX 5060 remains the smarter choice for buyers who value DLSS, Nvidia’s frame-generation ecosystem, CUDA, OptiX, NVENC, Broadcast, or Nvidia-specific AI and creator software.

The comparison needs one important qualification: AMD sells the RX 9060 XT with either 8GB or 16GB of memory. The 8GB version is the closest price comparison to the RTX 5060, while the 16GB version is the more durable choice for 1440p, demanding modern games, mods, and high-resolution textures.

Quick verdict

Buyer Best choice Why
Best overall gaming option Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB More VRAM and stronger conventional gaming performance, if reasonably priced
Best budget gaming option Radeon RX 9060 XT 8GB Usually faster than the RTX 5060 in rasterized games, provided it is meaningfully cheaper than the 16GB model
Best Nvidia feature set GeForce RTX 5060 DLSS, frame generation, Reflex, Nvidia Broadcast, Studio features, CUDA and OptiX
Best long-term VRAM capacity Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB Twice the memory of the RTX 5060 and better suited to demanding 1440p settings

At similar prices, choose the RX 9060 XT for gaming performance and capacity. Choose the RTX 5060 when its software ecosystem directly benefits your games or applications. Do not pay RX 9060 XT 16GB money for an RTX 5060 unless Nvidia’s features are worth that premium to you.

What exactly is being compared?

Graphics card VRAM Memory type Launch MSRP Positioning
GeForce RTX 5060 8GB GDDR7 $299 Mainstream 1080p Nvidia card
Radeon RX 9060 XT 8GB GDDR6 $299 Mainstream AMD gaming card
Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB GDDR6 $349 Higher-capacity 1080p and 1440p option

The RX 9060 XT 16GB launched only $50 above the RTX 5060, but launch MSRP is not the same as today’s street price. AMD lists the RX 9060 XT with 32 compute units, 2,048 stream processors, a boost clock of up to 3,130MHz, a 128-bit memory interface and PCIe 5.0 x16 connectivity. Board power is listed at 150W for the 8GB model and 160W for the 16GB model. See AMD’s official specifications and launch announcement.

GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 5060 WINDFORCE OC 8G Graphics Card, Cooling System, 8GB 128-bit GDDR7, PCIe 5.0, Manufactured by NVIDIA, DisplayPort & HDMI - Video Output Interface, GV-N5060WF2OC-8GD Video Card
  • Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
  • Powered by GeForce RTX 5060
  • Integrated with 8GB GDDR7 128bit memory interface
  • PCIe 5.0
  • WINDFORCE cooling system

Nvidia lists the RTX 5060 with 8GB of GDDR7 and the Blackwell feature set, including DLSS support. Independent review documentation places its total graphics power at approximately 145W, although exact temperatures, noise, dimensions and connector placement depend on the partner card. Nvidia’s official RTX 5060 page has the product specifications.

Gaming performance: the RX 9060 XT is generally faster in rasterization

With ray tracing disabled and otherwise comparable settings, the RX 9060 XT is normally the faster gaming GPU. Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 GPU hierarchy places the RX 9060 XT 8GB approximately 30% ahead of the RTX 5060 at 1080p and approximately 23% ahead at 1440p in its test suite. Those are suite-level results, not a guarantee for every game. Engine design, drivers, CPU limitations, texture settings, patches and upscaling choices can change the gap.

That performance advantage applies primarily to conventional rasterized rendering. It is the most useful baseline for comparing the cards because it does not mix native rendering, upscaling and generated frames into one number. Tom’s Hardware’s results are available in its GPU Benchmarks Hierarchy.

At 1080p

Both cards are designed primarily for high-refresh 1080p gaming. The RTX 5060 can be an excellent 1080p card for esports, older games and titles that support DLSS well. However, the RX 9060 XT generally provides more raw headroom in standard rendering, which can help maintain higher settings or stronger minimums in demanding games.

At 1440p

The RX 9060 XT’s lead becomes more useful at 1440p, but memory capacity also becomes more important. The 16GB model is the safer choice if you intend to use high textures, large open-world games, mods or the card for several years. The RTX 5060 can still work at 1440p with sensible settings and upscaling, but its 8GB limit makes it less flexible.

Average FPS is not the whole story. Watch for 1% lows, frame-time consistency and texture-streaming behavior. A card that technically produces a good average can still feel worse if it repeatedly runs out of VRAM.

RX 9060 XT 8GB vs. 16GB: the decision that matters most

The RX 9060 XT 8GB and 16GB versions use the same general GPU class, but they are not equally attractive purchases. The 16GB version has twice the memory, while the 8GB model is only appealing when its price is substantially lower.

  • 8GB: Suitable for many 1080p games, esports and older titles at high settings. Expect more compromises in demanding newer games.
  • 16GB: Better positioned for 1440p, high-resolution textures, mods, ray tracing with upscaling and longer ownership.

VRAM capacity does not directly equal GPU speed. A 16GB card does not automatically render every game faster. Its benefit is avoiding capacity-related problems such as stutter, texture pop-in, crashes, preset restrictions or the need to reduce texture quality. Conversely, an 8GB card can deliver excellent performance when a game fits comfortably within its memory budget.

Tom’s Hardware notes that some modern games can prevent 8GB cards from using their highest preset, including Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. TechSpot’s reviews also found serious 8GB limitations in demanding titles and described the 16GB model as better suited to modern 1440p gaming. These are game-and-setting-specific warnings, not proof that every 8GB game experience is poor. See the Tom’s Hardware review, TechSpot’s 8GB review and 16GB review.

Practical rule: buy the RX 9060 XT 16GB if you plan to keep the card for two or more years, play demanding AAA games, use mods or target 1440p. Buy the 8GB version only when it is clearly discounted or your games are mostly lightweight 1080p titles.

Ray tracing: Nvidia has the stronger platform, but AMD is more competitive than before

The RTX 5060 is not automatically faster in every ray-traced game, but Nvidia retains important advantages in the complete ray-tracing experience: mature RT support, DLSS Super Resolution, Frame Generation, Multi Frame Generation in supported configurations, Reflex and broad developer adoption.

AMD says RDNA 4 substantially improves ray-tracing throughput over its previous generation. Independent testing shows the RX 9060 XT is much more competitive than earlier mainstream Radeon cards, with results varying significantly by title and ray-tracing mode. In demanding games, either card may need upscaling, reduced settings or both. Full path tracing is a much heavier workload than ordinary reflections or shadows and should not be treated as the same test.

When comparing RT results, check whether the review used native resolution, DLSS or FSR, and whether frame generation was enabled. A displayed frame-generation number is not equivalent to the number of frames rendered by the GPU. Generated frames can improve smoothness, but they do not replace a sufficiently high base frame rate and can affect latency and image stability.

DLSS, FSR and frame generation

The RTX 5060 supports Nvidia’s DLSS ecosystem, including Super Resolution, Frame Generation and supported Blackwell features. Nvidia also provides Reflex for latency reduction and software such as Broadcast and the Nvidia App. The relevant technologies are documented in Nvidia’s RTX 5060 announcement.

The RX 9060 XT supports AMD features including FSR, Fluid Motion Frames, Radeon Super Resolution, Anti-Lag 2, Radeon Boost and FreeSync-related display features. Availability and quality vary by game, version and implementation; AMD lists supported technologies in its graphics specifications.

  • Choose Nvidia if you regularly play DLSS-supported games and value its upscaling, frame-generation and latency ecosystem.
  • Choose AMD if you prioritize raw raster performance, VRAM capacity and hardware value.
  • Do not rank the cards solely by generated FPS. Compare base FPS, image quality and latency as well.

Productivity, streaming, Blender and AI

This is the category in which the RTX 5060 can justify giving up VRAM and raster performance. Nvidia’s CUDA and OptiX support is important in many creative, rendering and AI applications. NVENC, AV1 encoding, Nvidia Broadcast and Studio drivers can also make Nvidia the lower-risk choice for streaming and video workflows built around Nvidia software.

AMD supports technologies including HIP, ROCm, Vulkan and OpenCL, but compatibility is application-specific. Some programs, renderers, plug-ins and AI packages work best with Nvidia or require CUDA. Others rely mainly on standard video encoding, Vulkan or raster performance, where Radeon may be perfectly suitable.

Do not infer professional performance from gaming benchmarks. Check the exact application, renderer, plug-ins and operating system before buying. For CUDA-dependent software, OptiX rendering or Nvidia-specific AI tools, choose the RTX 5060—or a higher-capacity Nvidia card if the workload exceeds 8GB. For a gaming-first system with occasional editing or streaming, the RX 9060 XT can still be the better overall choice.

Power, cooling and system compatibility

Both GPUs fit ordinary mainstream gaming systems, but specifications vary by board partner. Reference figures put the RTX 5060 at approximately 145W total graphics power and the RX 9060 XT at 150W for 8GB or 160W for 16GB. These figures describe GPU-board power, not total system draw from the wall.

Many partner cards use one 8-pin auxiliary connector, but confirm the exact model. Check:

  • Case length, height and slot thickness.
  • Power-supply quality, age and available PCIe connector.
  • Airflow and cooler design.
  • Factory-overclocked board power.
  • Warranty and fan-noise testing for the specific model.

The RTX 5060 uses PCIe x8, while the RX 9060 XT uses PCIe x16. This is usually not a decisive difference on a modern platform, but it deserves attention in an older PCIe 3.0 system, particularly if VRAM pressure causes frequent transfers across the bus. The real-world effect is workload-dependent; PCIe 5.0 branding does not automatically produce higher gaming performance. TechPowerUp discusses the interface issue in its RX 9060 XT review.

Drivers and software experience

Nvidia’s current workflow centers on the Nvidia App, Game Ready drivers, DLSS, Reflex, Broadcast, recording and Studio features. AMD’s Adrenalin software provides driver updates, recording, tuning, fan control, overlays, frame limiting and features such as Anti-Lag 2 and Fluid Motion Frames.

Neither vendor should be dismissed with a blanket claim that its drivers are categorically better. Both platforms are mature, but individual games can have launch-specific issues and software support can differ. If you use Linux, specialist plug-ins, game overlays or a particular capture workflow, verify compatibility for that exact setup.

Price and value in 2026

Launch pricing was $299 for the RTX 5060, $299 for the RX 9060 XT 8GB and $349 for the RX 9060 XT 16GB. Those figures explain the original product positioning, but they are not reliable buying prices in September 2026.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A price snapshot dated August 14, 2026 found approximately $369.99 for an RX 9060 XT 8GB listing and approximately $469.99 to $498.49 for 16GB listings at different retailers. These were observed listings, not universal national prices or a guarantee of current stock. See PC Gamer’s GPU price watch for the dated market reference.

Because the available research provides relative performance percentages rather than a complete shared FPS table and matching current prices, it would be misleading to invent exact price-per-frame figures. The practical value thresholds are clearer:

  • RTX 5060: attractive when it is substantially cheaper than the RX 9060 XT or when Nvidia software is central to your use.
  • RX 9060 XT 8GB: attractive near or below RTX 5060 pricing, but poor value when it approaches the 16GB model.
  • RX 9060 XT 16GB: the preferred gaming option when its premium is close to the original $50 launch gap; reconsider it if its price approaches a substantially faster GPU.

Also compare nearby alternatives. An RTX 5060 Ti 16GB may be preferable for buyers who need Nvidia features and more memory, while a higher-tier Radeon or GeForce card may offer better value if the RX 9060 XT 16GB is heavily inflated. Used previous-generation cards can also be compelling, but warranty, power use, age and remaining VRAM headroom matter.

Which card should different buyers choose?

1080p esports player

Either card is suitable. Choose the cheaper one unless you need DLSS, Reflex or Nvidia’s recording and streaming tools. The RX 9060 XT 8GB is reasonable for this use if it is meaningfully cheaper than the 16GB version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AAA 1080p gamer

Choose the RX 9060 XT for stronger raster performance. Prefer the 16GB model if you play new releases at high texture settings or intend to keep the card for several years.

1440p gamer

Choose the RX 9060 XT 16GB when priced sensibly. The RTX 5060 can handle 1440p with settings management and upscaling, but 8GB is a less comfortable long-term limit.

Ray-tracing enthusiast

Choose the RTX 5060 if your favorite games use DLSS and Nvidia’s RT features. AMD’s RX 9060 XT is more competitive than older Radeon cards, but neither GPU is an ideal choice for uncompromised 4K path tracing.

Modded-game player

Choose the RX 9060 XT 16GB. Mods and high-resolution texture packs can increase memory requirements quickly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Streamer

Choose based on the application and workflow. Nvidia is the safer choice if you specifically depend on NVENC, Broadcast or Nvidia’s software stack; AMD remains viable for AV1-capable streaming and gaming-first systems.

Blender, AI or CUDA user

Choose Nvidia when your renderer, AI package or plug-in requires CUDA or OptiX. Verify the application before buying; the RTX 5060’s 8GB capacity may still be limiting for larger workloads.

Older-PC upgrader

Check PCIe generation, slot wiring, CPU limitations, power supply and Resizable BAR or Smart Access Memory support. The RTX 5060’s x8 interface is a potential edge case on PCIe 3.0 systems, not an automatic performance problem.
