What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If your PS5 powers on but the TV stays black, treat it as a display-path or video-output problem first—not proof that the console has failed. Check the TV input, bypass receivers and switches, test the HDMI cable and display, then use PS5 Safe Mode to change the video output. Avoid Reset PS5 or Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) until every non-destructive fix has failed, because those options delete user data.
Identify what kind of black screen you have
The symptom helps determine where to start:
- “No Signal” on the TV: The display is not receiving a usable HDMI signal, so check the input, cable, HDMI port, and any device between the PS5 and TV.
- The PS5 logo appears, then the screen goes black: The console may be switching to a resolution, HDR, refresh rate, or HDCP mode the display chain cannot handle.
- The picture disappears and returns: Suspect the cable, HDMI handshake, TV firmware, 4K/120 Hz, HDR, VRR, ALLM, or an intermediary device.
- The Home screen works but one game or streaming app goes black: The problem may occur when that app switches video modes rather than during general startup.
- The console shuts down or the power light behaves abnormally: Investigate power, overheating, or hardware symptoms rather than treating it as a simple picture problem.
A black screen, “No Signal,” and a PS5 that will not turn on are different problems. Your result at each step matters, so do not jump straight to a factory reset.
Quick fixes: isolate the HDMI path first
Work through these reversible checks in order. They do not delete games, saves, screenshots, or other console data.
1. Select the correct TV input
Use the TV or monitor remote to select the exact HDMI input connected to the PS5. Try the other relevant inputs if the ports are similarly labeled. Confirm that the display’s own menus appear normally and, if possible, check whether another device works on that HDMI input.

- Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable designed for PS5
- 8K & 4K compatible HDMI 2.1 specifications
- 6.5-foot braided cable with metal housing
- Nylon-Braided cable for high durability and longevity
- Officially Licensed by Sony
2. Connect the PS5 directly to the display
Temporarily remove an AV receiver, soundbar with HDMI pass-through, HDMI switch, capture card, splitter, extender, or wall-plate coupler. Connect PS5 HDMI OUT directly to the TV or monitor HDMI IN. Sony specifically recommends removing intermediary audio/video equipment when troubleshooting picture or sound problems.
See Sony’s PS5 picture and sound troubleshooting.
3. Reseat or replace the HDMI cable
Turn off the PS5 and display, disconnect the HDMI cable at both ends, and reconnect it firmly. Then test a different known-good cable. The cable included with the PS5 is a useful test cable. For 4K/120 Hz, use an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable rated for the required signal; an expensive cable is not a universal cure, and basic PS5 operation does not require HDMI 2.1 in every setup.
A cable can work at 1080p yet fail when the PS5 attempts a higher-bandwidth 4K, HDR, or 120 Hz mode.
4. Try another HDMI input
Test another HDMI port on the TV. If you are troubleshooting 4K/120 Hz, use the port labeled for 4K/120 Hz, HDMI 2.1, or enhanced format where applicable. Some televisions require a separate setting to enable their high-bandwidth HDMI mode.
5. Test another display
Connect the PS5 to another TV, monitor, or lower-resolution display. The results narrow the fault:

- No picture on several displays: The cable, PS5 output settings, HDMI port, or console hardware becomes more likely.
- Picture only at 1080p: The 4K, HDR, 120 Hz, or TV-side HDMI configuration may be the problem.
This comparison identifies the failing part of the setup; it does not by itself prove that a specific component is defective.
Fully power-cycle the PS5 and display
- Turn off the PS5 completely, not Rest Mode.
- Turn off the TV or monitor.
- Unplug both devices from power.
- Disconnect the HDMI cable.
- Wait several minutes.
- Reconnect the display and PS5 directly with a known-good HDMI cable.
- Turn on the display first, select the correct input, and then start the PS5.
This can clear a failed HDMI handshake. It cannot repair a damaged HDMI port or internal component.

Safe Mode is the most useful next step when the console starts but cannot display its normal output. You need a DualSense controller and a USB cable that supports data, not just charging.
- Turn off the PS5 by holding the power button for about three seconds.
- Wait until the power indicator stops flashing and turns off.
- Press and hold the power button again.
- Release it after the second beep, which occurs approximately seven seconds after the first.
- Connect the DualSense to the PS5 with a USB data cable.
- Press the controller’s PS button.
A controller connected only through Bluetooth cannot be used in Safe Mode. If Safe Mode does not appear, confirm that the console was fully off, that you heard the second beep, that the USB cable supports data, and that you have already tested another HDMI cable, input, and display.
Choose Safe Mode options in this order
Restart PS5
Use this first if Safe Mode appears. It exits Safe Mode and attempts a normal startup.
Change Video Output
Choose Change Resolution to force a basic compatible output mode. If the picture returns, start the PS5 normally and review its video settings. You can also try Change HDCP Mode when an intermediary device or display may have an HDCP compatibility problem.

These options are specifically relevant to blank-screen problems. They do not repair physical HDMI damage.
Repair Console Storage
Sony says this option does not erase data. It can help with certain startup or storage problems, but it is not a guaranteed HDMI repair.
Update System Software
Use this when the issue began after an interrupted or failed update, or when Sony Support directs you to update through Safe Mode. An update may correct software corruption or compatibility problems, but it cannot fix a damaged port.
Restore Default Settings
This restores settings without deleting games, apps, screenshots, video clips, or saved data stored on the console. You will need to configure some settings again. It is a safer configuration reset than a full system reset.
Clear System Software Cache and Rebuild Database
These are maintenance options for system-feature problems, performance issues, missing icons, freezing, or database-related symptoms. They are not primary HDMI repairs. Consider them when Safe Mode video works but normal startup is unstable or other system symptoms are present.
Reset PS5
This deletes user data. Treat it as a late-stage software step only after backing up what you can and exhausting non-destructive options.

Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software)
This deletes user data and removes the installed system software. Do not use it casually for a display-only problem. Sony’s Safe Mode documentation explains the distinction between these options.
Review video settings after the picture returns
Open Settings → Screen and Video → Video Output. The exact options can vary by PS5 model, system software, and connected display.
- Resolution: Try Automatic first. If the display goes black again, use Safe Mode to force a lower resolution.
- HDR: Temporarily disable it if the blackout occurs when HDR activates.
- 120 Hz Output: Disable it temporarily if the signal drops when launching compatible games.
- VRR: Turn it off while troubleshooting flicker or intermittent loss of signal.
- ALLM: Temporarily disable it if the TV changes modes incorrectly.
- 4K Video Transfer Rate: Test a less demanding setting where available if the 4K signal is unstable.
Re-enable advanced features one at a time. If the problem returns immediately after enabling one feature, the TV, cable, firmware, HDMI input, or intermediary equipment may not be handling that mode reliably.
For 4K/120 Hz problems, check the television’s manual for enhanced or deep-color HDMI mode, 4K/120 Hz input activation, HDR support, Game Mode, HDCP support, and firmware updates. Sony’s PS5 4K and HDMI guide explains why the cable, TV port, TV settings, and firmware all matter.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix intermittent black screens and flickering
If the picture disappears for a few seconds and returns, prioritize signal stability:
- Replace the HDMI cable.
- Bypass the receiver, soundbar, switch, splitter, and capture device.
- Try another TV HDMI input.
- Test 1080p at 60 Hz.
- Temporarily disable HDR, VRR, 120 Hz, and ALLM.
- Update the TV or monitor firmware.
- Test another display.
If the Home screen is stable but games cause blackouts, the trigger may be a switch into HDR, VRR, or 120 Hz rather than a total console failure. Bethesda also recommends reseating HDMI and reviewing video-output settings for flickering PS5 black screens; unresolved hardware cases should go to PlayStation Support.

When the HDMI port or console hardware may be damaged
Hardware becomes more concerning when:
- The HDMI cable feels unusually loose in the PS5 port.
- The picture changes when the cable moves.
- The port has bent, pushed-in, or missing contacts.
- The console was dropped, pulled, or moved while connected.
- Several known-good cables and displays fail.
- Safe Mode also produces no picture.
- The PS5 works only when the cable is held at a particular angle.
These clues suggest possible port or internal video damage, but they do not conclusively identify the failed component. Do not bend the port back, scrape the contacts, use glue, or attempt board-level soldering without suitable repair expertise. HDMI-port replacement requires specialized work and can worsen motherboard damage.
Black screen with overheating or power symptoms
If the PS5 becomes unusually hot, repeatedly shuts down, shows an abnormal power indicator, or turns off after the screen goes blank, stop treating the issue as a normal HDMI fault. Unplug the AC power cord and cables and allow the console to cool, as directed in the PS5 manual. Keep ventilation clear and do not operate the console in an enclosed cabinet.
When to contact PlayStation Repairs
Use Sony’s PlayStation Repairs diagnostic tool when:
- The PS5 fails with multiple known-good HDMI cables.
- It fails on more than one display.
- Safe Mode remains invisible after checking the input, cable, controller connection, and second beep.
- The HDMI port is visibly damaged or loose.
- The console shuts down or shows abnormal power behavior.
- The problem followed impact, liquid exposure, or electrical damage.
- A system update repeatedly fails.
- A destructive reset would be the only remaining software step.
Repair availability, pricing, warranty coverage, and turnaround vary by country, model, warranty status, and damage type. Do not assume a new console or an expensive HDMI cable is the correct next purchase until the display path has been isolated.

Why is my PS5 on but the screen black?
The display may be on the wrong input, the HDMI cable or port may be faulty, an intermediary device may be blocking the signal, or the PS5 may be using an incompatible resolution or HDCP mode. Start with a direct connection and then use Safe Mode.
Why does Safe Mode work but normal startup does not?
That suggests the PS5 can produce at least some video output, so prioritize Change Resolution, Change HDCP Mode, video-setting changes, updates, and Restore Default Settings. It does not prove that the HDMI port is completely healthy.
Will Restore Default Settings delete my games?
Sony states that it does not delete games, apps, screenshots, video clips, or saved data stored on the console. It does restore settings, so you may need to configure the system again.
Does rebuilding the database fix HDMI problems?
Not usually as a primary display fix. It may help when black-screen symptoms occur alongside freezing, slow menus, missing icons, or other database-related system problems.
Should I reinstall PS5 system software?
Only as a late-stage recovery measure or when Sony Support instructs you to do so. Reinstalling system software deletes user data and cannot repair a damaged HDMI port.
