Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteNo. The Galaxy S21 remains a capable low-cost gaming phone, particularly in its U.S. Snapdragon 888 version, but it is not the best overall choice in 2026. Its 120Hz screen and compact flagship design are still appealing; aging hardware, battery wear, modest charging, limited storage and the apparent end of regular security support make newer Galaxy FE models or a gaming-focused phone better purchases for most serious players.
What “best for mobile gaming” should mean
A gaming phone is not judged by a launch-year benchmark alone. The useful test combines:
- Stable frame rates during 20–40-minute demanding sessions, not just peak scores.
- Thermal behavior, throttling and performance while charging.
- Display refresh rate, touch response, brightness, resolution and usable screen area.
- Battery endurance, charging speed and the condition of a used battery.
- Speakers, controller support, connectivity and ergonomics.
- Current Android compatibility and remaining security support.
- Total ownership cost, including storage, repairs, warranty and the price gap to newer phones.
Those criteria matter because a phone can launch a game smoothly for five minutes yet become hot, drain quickly or reduce performance later.
Which Galaxy S21 are you buying?
“Galaxy S21” describes multiple regional configurations. The U.S. Galaxy S21 5G generally uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 (Samsung’s specification identifies it as SDM8350), while many international models use Samsung’s Exynos 2100. Samsung lists the Exynos 2100’s Mali-G78 GPU and claims up to a 46% sustained-performance improvement over its predecessor, but that is a manufacturer claim, not independent gaming evidence: U.S. S21 specifications and Samsung Exynos 2100 information.

Galaxy S21 gaming hardware in 2026
120Hz display, but not guaranteed 120fps
Samsung’s U.S. brochure specifies a 6.2-inch, 2400×1080 display with a 120Hz refresh rate. That can make supported games and menus feel smoother, but the panel does not force a game to render at 120 frames per second. Actual output depends on the game’s frame-rate cap, graphics settings, software, temperature and battery state. Higher refresh rates also consume more power. The compact 6.2-inch screen is easy to carry but provides less viewing area than larger gaming phones and current FE models.
Still-flagship-class core hardware
The U.S. model has 8GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB of storage, 5G, Wi‑Fi 6-class connectivity, stereo speakers, USB-C and IP68 water and dust resistance, according to Samsung’s specification sheet: Galaxy S21 series specifications. Snapdragon 888 or Exynos 2100 remains sufficient for mainstream Android games, but neither platform is a 2026 performance leader. The more important question is sustained performance in the exact model you are buying.

- The Galaxy S21 FE sports a sleek polycarbonate back with a premium matte finish that resists fingerprints and feels smooth in hand, giving it a stylish yet practical design.
Battery and charging
The standard S21 originally used a 4,000mAh battery and supports 25W wired and 15W wireless charging in Samsung’s U.S. specification. Those charging rates work, but are ordinary by 2026 standards. A 2021 phone may have substantially less usable capacity than a new one, and two apparently identical used S21s can have very different endurance.

There is no dedicated gaming cooling system, shoulder trigger, bypass-charging mode or gaming-first thermal design. The S21 also has no microSD expansion in the standard U.S. configuration, making 128GB potentially restrictive once large games, downloadable assets, recordings and media accumulate.
What sustained gaming performance actually requires
A short benchmark cannot establish that the S21 is the best gaming phone. A meaningful comparison records the named game, graphics and frame-rate settings, chipset and model number, session length, ambient conditions, temperature, battery drain and whether the phone was charging. It should also compare frame-time consistency after the phone is already warm and after a case is fitted.

- This pre-owned product has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon qualified vendors.
- This product is in "Excellent condition". The screen and body show no signs of cosmetic damage visible from 12 inches away.
- This product will have a battery that exceeds 80% capacity relative to new.
Samsung’s specification material establishes the S21’s processor and display, but does not prove current gaming superiority: Samsung S21 brochure. Current games should run broadly on a healthy S21, but future requirements, device-specific frame-rate whitelists and thermal throttling remain forward-looking risks. A 120Hz panel cannot override a game’s own cap.
The battery and used-device problem
For a used S21, condition can matter more than the original specification. Check:
- Battery-health information, rapid percentage drops and unexpected shutdowns.
- Heat during a game and while charging.
- Whether the battery and screen are original and whether the phone has been repaired.
- Screen burn-in, charging-port damage, bent frames and signs of liquid exposure.
- IMEI, carrier lock, storage capacity and the exact model number.
- A written return period or warranty.
Gaming while plugged in can add heat and accelerate battery wear, so test charging separately from ordinary play. IP68 is not proof that a previously opened or repaired phone remains water-resistant. A battery replacement may restore usability, but its local cost can erase the saving over a newer handset.

Software support is now a major weakness
Samsung originally promised the S21 series up to four generations of Android/One UI upgrades and five years of security updates: Samsung’s policy announcement. Official update records show Android 15/One UI 7 and a January 1, 2026 security patch on at least some variants, including the U.S. SM-G991U1 and another regional model: U.S. update record and regional update record.
Samsung’s current security-support scope lists newer devices and the S21 FE but omits the regular S21 family: Samsung security-update scope. The careful conclusion is that the regular S21 appears to have reached the end of Samsung’s standard security-update window, with Android 15/One UI 7 apparently its final major platform generation. Exact availability can vary by model, carrier and region. Games may continue to work, but buying an unsupported phone reduces its long-term value.

Where dedicated gaming phones fit
Gaming-focused phones typically add larger vapor chambers or active cooling, shoulder triggers, high touch-sampling rates, bypass charging, large batteries and performance modes. They are the more logical category for long competitive sessions, but may sacrifice camera quality, water resistance, wireless charging, software polish or mainstream resale value. Samsung can remain the better all-rounder even when it is not the gaming-performance winner.
Who should buy the Galaxy S21?
It makes sense when
- You specifically want a compact Samsung phone.
- The Snapdragon version is confirmed where relevant.
- The price is meaningfully below newer FE alternatives.
- Battery health is documented or a reasonably priced replacement is available.
- You mainly play casual, competitive or moderately demanding games.
- You accept limited remaining support and have a return window or warranty.
Choose something else when
- You play demanding games for long sessions or want the most stable high settings.
- You need all-day gaming endurance, rapid charging or gaming-specific controls.
- You expect several more years of security updates.
- The S21 costs close to an S24 FE or S25 FE.
- The battery history, chipset or repair history is unknown.
- You need 256GB or more but only a 128GB unit is available.
The value test before you pay
Calculate the S21’s real cost as purchase price + likely battery or repair cost + the value of its shorter remaining support life. If that total approaches a newer FE phone, the newer device is the rational purchase even if the S21 still runs games well. Do not treat a low listing price as a bargain without model verification, condition evidence and a return policy.
Quick Recap
Final ranking
- Best cheap used Samsung gaming value: Galaxy S21, only at a genuinely low price with a healthy battery and confirmed chipset.
- Best longer-term Samsung value: Galaxy S25 FE or S24 FE, depending on verified street pricing and warranty.
- Best Samsung performance: Galaxy S25 or a newer flagship.
- Best gaming-first design: A dedicated gaming phone, if cooling, triggers and bypass charging matter more than Samsung’s broader ecosystem.
