Short answer: Lenovo really did discontinue its Android Legion gaming-phone business on March 28, 2023. However, that does not describe the whole picture in 2026. Lenovo-hosted material and Spanish technology reporting indicate a Legion Y70 revival was teased for May 2026. The original line is therefore discontinued, while a possible successor exists with unclear global availability, specifications and support.
The answer depends on which “Legion” you mean
Lenovo ended the original Legion smartphone business, not the Legion gaming brand. Legion laptops, handhelds, tablets, monitors, accessories and gaming software continued after the phone shutdown.
- Legion phone: an Android smartphone with cellular connectivity.
- Legion Tab/Y700: an Android gaming tablet, not a phone.
- Legion Go: a Windows or SteamOS gaming handheld, not a cellular handset.
That distinction is why “Legion is dead” is misleading when it refers to Lenovo’s wider gaming portfolio.
What Lenovo discontinued in 2023
On March 28, 2023, Lenovo confirmed that it was discontinuing its Android-based Legion gaming phones as part of “a wider business transformation and gaming portfolio consolidation.” The company did not announce that it was abandoning Legion products generally. Android Authority reported the shutdown, while Tech Advisor quoted Lenovo’s explanation.

The affected family included the Legion Phone Duel, Legion Phone Duel 2 (called the Legion 2 Pro in China) and the Legion Y70. The Duel 2 launched internationally in April 2021, and the Y70 became the latest major original-generation model in August 2022. By 2023 coverage, the Y70 was treated as the final phone in the series. Android Central documented that chronology.

|---|---|---|

| September 5, 2025 | New Legion Go hardware and monitors announced | Handheld and PC strategy continues |
| January 6, 2026 | Lenovo announces additional Legion gaming products and concepts | No clearly indexed phone announcement in that release |
| May 2026 | Lenovo-hosted material teases a Legion Y70 (2026); Spanish media reports a smartphone return | Evidence of a revival, but not proof of worldwide retail availability |
Why Lenovo said it ended the phones
Lenovo’s stated reason was portfolio consolidation within a wider business transformation. That is the directly attributed explanation; there is no cited Lenovo statement here identifying poor sales, a particular loss figure or a single failed product as the cause.
There are plausible market pressures, but they remain context rather than confirmed reasons. Gaming phones address a niche inside an already crowded smartphone market. Features such as shoulder triggers, bypass charging, active cooling and extreme refresh rates appeal strongly to enthusiasts but are less important to mainstream buyers. Gaming-focused designs can also mean heavier bodies, less conventional cameras and limited distribution. Lenovo’s phones never achieved the worldwide retail reach of Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi or Motorola, and the Duel 2’s international availability was narrower than its branding suggested.

Legion did not disappear from mobile gaming
Lenovo continued to invest in mobile-adjacent Legion products. Its 2025 and 2026 announcements covered Legion Tabs, Legion Go handhelds, laptops, monitors and related software. The company’s CES 2025 announcement, 2026 Legion announcement and MWC 2026 announcement show that the brand remained active.
The Legion Tab is the closest current Lenovo alternative for Android gaming, but it is a tablet rather than a phone and may not provide cellular calling or carrier support in every configuration. Lenovo’s March 2026 material listed an 8.8-inch, fifth-generation Legion Tab with an estimated starting price of €999 in the cited European context; country pricing and availability can differ.
What the reported 2026 Y70 revival actually establishes
A Lenovo-hosted creator page says a “Lenovo Legion Y70 (2026)” was teased for a May 2026 launch. A May 20, 2026 report from Spain’s Cinco Días likewise described Lenovo returning to smartphones with a new Legion Y70. The two references are evidence that Lenovo was promoting a phone comeback, not merely continuing the old 2022 stock. Lenovo’s hosted post and the Spanish report are the relevant sources.

That evidence is weaker than a conventional Lenovo newsroom release, a complete regional product page, a regulatory filing or an independent hands-on review. It does not by itself establish:
- the final retail model name or whether it is a direct successor to the 2022 Y70;
- the chipset, battery capacity, cooling hardware, cameras, charging system or software version;
- the price or countries in which it is sold;
- Google Mobile Services outside China;
- Lenovo’s Android-version and security-update policy.
Rumors about a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and a battery of roughly 7,000mAh should not be treated as specifications until Lenovo publishes them in an official specification sheet or product listing.

Before importing any alleged Y70 (2026), a U.S. buyer would need a Lenovo U.S. listing, a U.S. price, compatible LTE and 5G bands, FCC certification, warranty terms, Google Play certification and a documented repair and update program. Without those checks, a listing from an overseas seller does not prove that the phone is officially supported in America.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.What older Legion-phone owners should expect
Support was never uniform across every model, region and firmware build, so it is inaccurate to claim that all older phones stopped updating on one date. Owners should nevertheless plan for the risks created by the 2023–2025 gap:
- official parts and battery replacements may be difficult to find;
- Chinese and international firmware can differ in languages, services and update schedules;
- imported units may lack the cellular bands needed by a particular carrier;
- some China-market builds can have Google Play, banking-app, notification or DRM limitations;
- battery aging can erase the price advantage of a used phone.
Anyone considering a cheap used or imported model should verify the exact regional variant, supported bands, Google Play and banking compatibility, update history, seller warranty, battery condition, bootloader or ROM restrictions and return rights before paying.

Current alternatives if the goal is gaming, not specifically a Lenovo phone
| Option | Best for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Legion Tab | Large-screen Android gaming in Lenovo’s ecosystem | Not a normal cellular phone; portability and carrier features vary by model |
| Legion Go | Portable PC gaming and access to desktop game libraries | Not a phone; different battery, size and game-compatibility trade-offs |
| Legion laptop | Highest performance and broad PC compatibility | Least pocketable and not a cellular handset |
| Dedicated gaming phone from another maker | Triggers, cooling and phone-sized portability | Must be checked for update support, bands, warranty and regional availability |
| Mainstream flagship plus controller | One device for cameras, calls and games | Usually lacks dedicated gaming controls and cooling features |
Potential dedicated-phone categories include Nubia RedMagic, ASUS ROG Phone and Xiaomi or Redmi gaming-oriented models. Choosing among them requires current testing of sustained performance, thermals, battery life, charging, cameras, touch response, trigger quality, software support, accessories, network bands, warranty and the final price after import taxes. No single rival should be called better without that current, region-specific comparison.
Verdict
The statement “Lenovo’s Legion gaming phone series is dead” was accurate when Lenovo confirmed the shutdown on March 28, 2023. It is too absolute as a current statement. The original Legion phone line ended, Lenovo kept the broader Legion ecosystem alive, and 2026 evidence indicates that a Legion Y70 phone may have returned. Until Lenovo clearly documents the model’s markets, specifications, Google services, warranty and update policy, the safest description is: the original series died in 2023, but Lenovo appears to be reviving the brand in 2026 with uncertain global scope.
