Apple EarPods with a standard 3.5mm plug can connect directly to the DualShock 4 controller for game audio and, usually, voice chat. Lightning EarPods, USB-C EarPods and AirPods are not direct plug-and-play PS4 headsets; they need different hardware or a different headset.
Identify your headphones in five seconds

The relevant socket is the 3.5mm stereo headset jack on the DualShock 4, not a general headphone socket on the PS4 console. Sony lists that controller jack in the PS4 specifications: PlayStation PS4 specifications.
How to connect 3.5mm EarPods
- Turn on the PS4 and sign in.
- Push the EarPods’ 3.5mm plug fully into the DualShock 4 controller.
- Open Settings > Devices > Audio Devices.
- Confirm the controller headset is detected.
- Choose Output to Headphones > All Audio to route game sound to the EarPods.
- Raise Volume Control (Headphones) if necessary.
- For chat, select Adjust Microphone Level and speak until the input meter responds.
- Join a PlayStation Party or use the game’s voice-chat test to confirm the microphone.
Sony’s audio instructions identify Chat Audio as the default output and explain the All Audio option: PS4 audio-output settings. Its controller troubleshooting guide gives the same menu path and notes that a grayed-out output option means the headset is not detected: DualShock 4 troubleshooting.
What should work—and what is not guaranteed?
Game audio
A detected 3.5mm EarPods connection should carry stereo game audio after Output to Headphones is changed to All Audio. If the setting remains on Chat Audio, you may hear party members but not the game.

Party chat microphone
Apple EarPods with a compatible four-contact TRRS plug will generally provide microphone input, but Sony does not certify every EarPods revision on its general support pages. Test the input meter rather than assuming it works.
Inline controls
Do not expect the EarPods’ volume, playback or call buttons to control PS4 functions. They are designed primarily for Apple and mobile-device controls.

Fit and isolation
EarPods are open-style earbuds. They can be inexpensive and comfortable, but they let in room noise and may hide quiet game details compared with sealed earcups.
Why Lightning and USB-C EarPods do not plug in directly
The DualShock 4 accepts an analog 3.5mm headset connection. Lightning EarPods are digital Lightning accessories, and USB-C EarPods require a USB-C host. Neither connector fits the controller’s analog jack, and a simple physical plug converter is not the normal solution.

Apple’s USB-C-to-3.5mm adapter is intended to connect ordinary 3.5mm headphones or speakers to a USB-C device; Apple does not establish it as a method for running USB-C EarPods through a DualShock 4: Apple USB-C to 3.5mm adapter. If you need a low-cost wired solution, use a 3.5mm headset instead.
Can AirPods work on PS4?
AirPods are Bluetooth earbuds, not wired EarPods. The PS4 does not offer a straightforward, guaranteed pairing path for them as a complete game-and-chat headset. A separately verified Bluetooth audio transmitter may provide game sound, but latency is possible and many transmitters do not provide reliable two-way microphone chat.

- Check that the transmitter explicitly supports the required audio profile and PS4 connection.
- Verify microphone support separately; output audio alone does not guarantee party chat.
- Expect an extra device, possible delay and a more complicated setup than a 3.5mm headset.
For wireless use, a PlayStation-compatible USB wireless headset is usually the more predictable option. Confirm PS4 support for the exact model in Sony’s accessories guidance: PlayStation accessories support.

The PS4 does not detect the EarPods
- Push the plug completely into the controller.
- Confirm the controller is connected and recognized by the PS4.
- Try the EarPods on another 3.5mm device.
- Inspect the plug, cable and controller socket for damage or looseness.
- If Output to Headphones is grayed out, Sony says the controller is not detecting a headset.
There is no sound
- Open Settings > Devices > Audio Devices > Output to Headphones and choose All Audio.
- Raise Volume Control (Headphones).
- Reinsert the plug and test another headset or controller.
Chat works but game audio does not
Change the output from Chat Audio to All Audio: Sony’s PS4 audio-output instructions.

Game audio works but the microphone does not
- Check the mute status and run Adjust Microphone Level.
- Make sure the plug is fully inserted.
- Check the game’s own voice-chat setting, party privacy and any parental communication restrictions.
- Try another TRRS headset to separate EarPods compatibility from a controller-jack fault.
Sound is very quiet or only one earbud works
Reinsert the plug, raise the headphone volume and test for a damaged cable or worn controller jack. Partial insertion and contact problems can produce low or one-sided audio.
Audio still comes from the TV
Recheck Output to Headphones > All Audio. PS4 output behavior has limits when attempting to send voice and game audio to both a headset and TV simultaneously; Sony documents those limitations here: PS4 voice-chat issues.
Which option makes sense?

Apple listed U.S. prices of $19 for Lightning EarPods and USB-C EarPods on August 18, 2026, but neither is a direct DualShock 4 solution: Lightning EarPods and USB-C EarPods.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: A standard 3.5mm plug is the straightforward answer—connect it to the DualShock 4 and select All Audio. Lightning and USB-C EarPods do not connect directly, while AirPods require a transmitter setup with possible chat and latency drawbacks. If you play regularly, a dedicated 3.5mm PS4 headset is the least complicated upgrade.
